[Q] Problems with Sprint 3g - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I got my Sprint GNex in the beginning of May and been having some problems with Sprint 3g (Metro Detroit). I am not sure if it just a Sprint issue or if it has to do with my phone. The problems I am experience are;
1) Certain MMS pictures just show 'download' button and wont download when pressed. I have tried toggling between wifi/3G.
2) Google music won't buffer a song when I have a full 3g signal.
3) Signal seems to get stuck on '1x' when it should have a 3g signal.
I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, and installed CMM 9. I believe I updated the radios to FD02 from FD12 but am kind of a noob when it comes to radios. I have tried updating profile and PRL but it doesn't seem to have any effect. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your help.....

I just got my GNEX yesterday. Immediately after activating, I noticed the 3G data speeds seemed a bit slower than my EVO but I didn't think much of it. Then after a day of use I noticed slower data speeds overall. Today I was having trouble where I couldn't access a webpage at all in a known area with weak reception. The funny thing is I tried to access the same page from my wife's iPhone (also on Sprint) and while slow, it was still able to load the page.
From what I read the big issue with the GNEX on Sprint was that it wasn't connecting to 3G data services at all, and the FD02 software update was supposed to fix that. I'm running FD02 and I can access the 3G data network, however the transfer speeds are very slow compared to my old EVO and my wife's iPhone.
I really do enjoy this phone and I hope this is something that can be fixed via a SW update. What's the best way to handle this problem? I was thinking about going to a Sprint store to compare it with a demo model of the same phone just to see if perhaps I have a bad piece of hardware.

Haven't had this issue. However to radios in Samsung devices are notorious for having weaker signal reception which is why comparing to the Evo and iPhone it is much less. It could potentially be a bad radio in the phone you can always take it into a sprint store and have then test it.

I had the galaxy nexus on sprint and now selling speeds on sprint have gotten really bad so I just dropped off sprint and got tmobile and without LTE I'm hitting 12-16mbps if you guys singup a contract you should consider tmobile really
Waiting for my GN btw I'm paying 65$ for one line

Maybe if in lived in a populates city but I doubt if any carrier out here is any better... also I don't think I could get a better deal on my bill. And I've already signed my two year contract.

I just upgraded... not too long ago. And i live in the hill country of central texas. You can google map the city of Marble Falls, Texas. I havent even seen a Tmobile store anywhere in my area... other than the bigger cities. So i dunno... besides how much are their plans? Cheaper than sprint? That and i dont know what phone i would even go after... definetly not the One X or any HTC phone... has to be a samsung and the only one i would even consider is the S3...

It looks pretty good to me (coverage kind of like mine)
I would get a unlocked nexus depending on your minute for one like you could be paying 65$ at month for unlimited everything but calls(500 minutes) and 5GB of 4G if you get a phone from then it could cost 85$ at month

And it would involve breaking my contract now... doubt i could get out of it before they start crying and offering stuff i dont want... i may think about it.

Mm i see if is too much hassle try to see if someone wS to take it from you on craiglist is just advice I like sprint for a while but after the evo and the iphone there network went to crap and truth the nexus get lower speed test but I could assure you if you use data a lot you'll be happier with tmobile or att(too expensive had them for a while)

Just returned my evo with hopes of getting my preorder gs3

Returned evo lte due to data dropouts and crap reception for the photon with hopes of getting the gs3. Will the gs3 have similar data issues due to the new 4g radios in these new sprint phones? So far the photon reception is insane.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
I think most people would agree that the Photon is well known among Sprint phones to be the champion when it comes to reception. If you're hoping for reception like it had in the GS3, I wouldn't hold your breath. I had the EVO LTE before the GS3 & the reception was about the same between the two. Samsung did do us a service in improving the radio slightly in the GS3 over the GS2 though. I get approximately 2-3 dBm better reception with my GS3 over my GS2 in the same spots. YMMV.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
As far as cdma Motorola has a patent that allows them superior radio quality. Does anyone know one that patent will expire? Lol
Should I stick it out with the photon and skip on the gs3?
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
Dude, the SGS3 is the pinnacle of smartphone hardware you can own in the WORLD, regardless of network, right now. It is an amazing piece of technology. Like I said, if you expect to see reception like you do with the Photon, that's probably going to be a pipe dream. But I think you'd be crazy not to at least try it out. Am I biased? Yeah, mostly!

Great time for a return. Verizon SGSIII should be out shortly, return that Photon, pick up that SGSIII should receive equal to +/- reception and you'll be in excellent condition. I couldn't do the EVO LTE, looking forward to Verizon, again :good:.

Just got off the phone with best buy and according to them, I should get the gs3 right away since I preordered which should be in my 30 day return policy with best buy. Ill give it a shot and if I see the same poor reception as the evo lte, Ill go back to the photon. As far as going back to verizon, not happening, I just did an assumption of liability with some one on xda an gave up my unlimited. Couldn't justify spending 150 a month for three lines with only one smartphone, 700 minutes, and only 200 text per line. Now I'm spending about 165 for all three lines two of which are iphones for my wife an mother in law. On the 1500 data unlimited. Sprint in my area is fine for service and will only improve as they make network upgrades plus I should be grandfathered in my current plan if they ever decide to change policy. Again this is all speculation, not fact. Here's to hoping the gs3 doesn't drop data the way the beautifully designed evo lte did.

I agree, Sprint ftw! Also, the EVO LTE is beautiful, but once you have the GS3 in hand I doubt you'll be disappointed from a design perspective. It's gorgeous & also more comfortable to hold IMHO. Hopefully the signal strength will be better for you, too! Good luck in your endeavor.

I don't know maybe it was a fluke thing with being defective, like I said if the gs3 fails in that dept ill be back to the photon. This sucks!

I have the evo lte currently and was thinking of getting the sgs3 also. I went into t-mobile store today to play with one and I wasn't exactly blown away by it. device looks odd because of the really rounded corners. I compared screen sizes and could barely see the difference. I still can't decide
I think both phones are excellent phones and the which one is better, is a silly argument. Ultimately both phones will tackle just about any task you throw at it and any performance differences will be minimal.

I had the evo lte and returned it due to poor reception and other issues. I've had much better results with the gs3. I also owned the photon before and while the gs3 is not quite as good as the photon, I'd say in 90% of areas I am in, there is no noticeable difference in reception.

Dav, you get what you pay for... I'm with Sprint and I put a pre-orders for 2 S3 with Verizon. I cant even load Google maps while on the train here in LI NY. IMO after Sprint went with the iPhone my speed went from awesome to pure garbage, yes, you get unlimited but what good does it make if you can't even stream a song without skip.
If you want to check how Sprint is doing where you live try check here network.sprint.com
on LI too! Ditched sprint all together, cant justify spending $225 for service thats barely there. Giving t mobile a shot and if that doesnt work, im going back to a pager and some pocket change for a payphone! Im still in my 14 day return period with sprint and was able to port my numbers over, got three lines with 1000 minutes unlimited text, 2gb high speed data with the unlimited slow 3g thing. went with the one s for myself and two nokia lumia 710's for my wife and mother in law at $145 a month. Anything above $150 is pushing it with theses greedy cell companies. Att wanted $200 for something similar to sprint and verizon is about $190. I know a few people with t mobile on LI that say service is fine.

Really? The one s is nice but after using galaxy nexus and evo my eyes would actually get tired after reading for while, that's why I changed and also some apps don't look as updated as the evo ones, like the mail and contacts, when you swype the bottom part in the contacts apps you don't get the cool animation, and the email app wouldn't display some stuff correctly, nice phone tho, really thin device

Tmobile average 6MBS (cousins phone)
What would you do....
People always say "yo, I'm 'bout ta jump dis ship, who's coming??" I don't exactly understand it. Have you been having terrible service with sprint? Is the development just not the same? Granted, the Nexus 4 seems to be a very powerful device, but I'm just curious, because there has been a lot of "development is really slowing down" being thrown around, and yes, we have lost some development from some very good devs, but right now we have a lot of good things going on. This CM10 beta 2 is unbelievable. This feels like a knew phone.
**OR** I could be just completely out of line, I guess I'm just wondering why people are so interested in getting away from this device in particular.
WOW, maybe there's just a good connection is just in my area. 150kbps is terrible....

I kinda feel the same way, I think this device is getting better and better, but....that $300 price tag is enticing, but....no swappable battery. So no dice LG and Google, no dice. Waiting on the S4. Or maybe because people just like new shiny things lol. It's natural.
And as mentioned earlier, $300 price tag with no contract.., not to mention a premium Nexus device? That's a no brainer. I won't be jumping ship, 'cause I'm tied down in my contract with Sprint until June 2013. Although if I had the opportunity, I'd probably do it. If you don't like the service/phone, sell phone, take a small loss, and go to another carrier. Simple.
I am. I'm tired of Sprint's slow 3g data and inconsistent wimax.

Believe me guys you dont need "LTE" what you need is faster data and I stay over 8mbps and have peaked near 20mbs on ocassion. More than enough for whatever it is you are doing. They can label it how they want HSPA, LTE, Wimax but all I care about is numbers and 8mbps+ are great numbers for me.
Jumping to TMobile where you can be online make calls and tether at the same damn time....:good:
Also on prepaid $70 flat a month
My bad oh yea NExus 4 no contract no brainer since if you dont like the phone your can sell it and get something else and slide the sim card in... If you are jumping go prepaid at first

Yes there are apps on the market 1 being GrooveIP that can handle your request. To me for speed and the ability to do things in 2012-2013 you need faster speeds. I now run Plex Server from my house - no problems Slingbox from my house - no problems and anything else I want.... good upload speeds at home and fast internet on phone = pure bliss :good::good:

Sprint Dropped My Line

I am currently deployed to Afghanistan. I had one of my two lines with sprint frozen starting in Oct. since I wouldn't be using it. They do this for military all the time. My upgrade for that line was supposed to be in Nov. I was planning on giving that upgrade to my brother on my other line since I won't be using for a while But the funny thing is, Sprint completely dropped my line within days of me getting the upgrade and now... No upgrade. I'm sure that I can call and complain to them till they fix it. But maybe it's a better idea to just load T-Mobile onto this phone and try out the pay as you go deal. Anyone here have any reasons for me to stay with Sprint? Or know any of the benefits of switching? I'm just interested in what any of your opinions are on this. Thanks!
Tmo uses sim card. You could go with boost if you research how to flash a boost rom in the development section, plus you'll still have wimax as well.

Oops My bad. Boost, not tmobile. I've never been able to use 4G because of the areas I've lived in but that is a plus to still be able to use it. Thanks gatesmarch123.
T-Mobile means you could get the Nexus 4. Nexus 4 = Worldwide quad-band radio frequencies. Pop in a sim from another country if needed and you're gold.
Edit: My bad, just saw you meant Boost

I like the phone I have a lot, but I know that Nexus devices are great and I am up for trying out any service provider (Besides ATT of course!). Thanks for the advice. Since I'll be traveling a lot, a Worldwide quad-band phone sounds good

You know, with the little experience I had with Straight Talk prepaid service, it was great. I had an S3 on it and the service was very good. Best of all they have an unlimited plan including international service for $60 a month prepaid. If you're up for trying new things, wouldn't hurt to try Straight Talk for a month. I mean if you don't like it, the Nexus 4 can be used with any carrier that uses SIM cards. So you have plenty of options.

Hmmm... T-mobile is sounding preeetty good to me. I'm liking the Nexus 4 too.
You could flash to cricket, really simple to do and you don't need a donor phone like you would flashing to boost.
That's a good idea too premise. Cricket is getting somewhat popular where I live. I can do that and have a really nice back up phone or give it to someone. I really do love the Epic 4g Touch. But I really think that I am going to try out T-mobile and get the Nexus 4. I can get the 16gb version for 350 directly from Google. Anyone know any other good deals?
Speaking from experience, Sprint has the tenancy to anger their customers.
That seems to be true haha they do what they want with your line that you PAY for. But still, AT&T is the worst. They want $800 to cancel my wife's line even with my deployment orders + we do not get service where I live. I guess I will have to take care of it in person when I get home in 7 months. Not cool at all.

Thanks!

I read you are thinking of T-Mobile Here are some links that can be helpful.

I don't suggest straight talk if AT&T don't get good service where you live. T-Mobile might be your best option.
And thank you for the services you provide so I can enjoy everything I do!
Thanks for the links man! I am def getting the Nexus 4. Not sure if I want to get it from T-mobile though. That phone is just too good to pass up! And hopefully get the Nexus 7 tablet for Christmas and slap Ubuntu onto it
No problem. Thank you for the service. It means a lot to me!

[Q] Best Canadian Carrier

Sorry if I posted this in the wrong spot. I just wanted to post where more Canadians look.

Haven't had any major issues with Telus.
Thank you for the suggestions. Anyone tried Mobilicity? I Heard that they are good.
I've been with Telus since 1996. I haven't had any major issues with them. Their coverage is great when not in a major center. I think all the carriers have good and bad. I have friends on Wind and they love it but they also don't regularly travel to rural areas where I need service to be reliable. I have a couple issues with customer service but I think that could just be isolated to the individuals I was dealing with on those particular occasions. Overall I am happy with Telus and have no reason to change at this time.

Been very happy with Koodo since switching to them a few months ago (was paying too much with Bell for what I was using the phone for).

Wow.
No contract with fido for the past 5 years. No complaints. I find if you don't sign a contract and the carrier knows you can walk away at any given time, they tend to be more flexible and helpful if/when you have billing issues.

I've been with Rogers for a while, and they are okay. Still have the 6GB/$30 data plan from a couple years back. Sad thing is I pay $65/month and don't even have caller ID. But the coverage and LTE speeds are great in my area.
My dad is currently with Mobilicity using a Note 2, and it is HORRIBLE! The coverage is absolute garbage (we live in the GTA). In the house, he has 2 bars, where normal phones have full. He complains about all the dropped calls he gets. Plan comes with "unlimited data" but its only hspa, and since the signal is so bad, the highest speed he gets is like 1 Mbps if lucky. He's gonna leave, and go back to Fido or try Koodo.

Is Fido or Koodo any good?
My dad was happy with Fido for years until he went to a trip overseas and he came back to a $1000 bill due to roaming, even though he never used the phone with the Fido sim inside. Other than that incident, it's pretty good.

Some say dish or Sprint might try to take over tmobile

http://www.tmonews.com/2013/07/investor-sees-t-mobile-as-takeover-target-for-dish-network-sprint/
I honestly don't want either to take over. But if I had to choose, I'd choose dish.
With me just coming from Sprint I have this to say
You would have to shoot me in the face to get me to ever give another penny to Sprint. Their 3g data speeds are horrific in most places (even in places that have network vision dine, it's just "meh" speed, still sub par) I could never get above a 20 kb/s download rate. Not to mention how much more expensive they are with their plans (when I was with then, I had the cheapest available, 450 min and unlimited everything else for 69.99 a month.) Back in the day, Sprint could compete, but they let their towers become dated and do to little to late when they finally do decide to do something about it. Not to mention hour they boned their wimax phone buyers.

Rather it be Dish than Sprint. Had a 4g phone since wimax came out... then LTE.... Still no 4g in Savannah. I said goodbye to them when the S4 came out and switched to tmo. Got them to cancel the early termination fee because of the past few years of bad service in the entire Southeast area of GA and SC. Took a week of convincing.
Then Tmo: It was instant "oh this is what 4g is like!" Roommate is still getting 10-100 KILObytes on Sprint, while I'm getting 15-26mb on Tmo. Suck it Sprint.

This.
And with what money is Sprint buying anyone, TMo isn't exactly Virgin Mobile.

Lol yes. Very well aware. Different tech. It's just the thought of being a customer of a Sprint owned anything. Seeing them fail so much.

Thats hillarious. Sprint DOES NOT have the money to take over a network that is triple in size to the one they already have. I also don't see how a tv company wants a cell phone network. I think its a load of garbage. Yes i read the link in the OP. T-Mobile is doing better than a lot of its competition, i seriously don't see Sprint "taking them over". Thats a laughing joke lol. Sprint sucks beyond sucking xD

yes but if sprint takes over, they will probably let the towers become dated like they did their own and we wont see these speeds for long
Seems to me that AT&T tried this not too long ago. The result? Fed Govt said "Nope, not going to happen" AT&T got pissy and walked away.. but not before paying T-Mo a pretty sizeable chunk of cash because the merger didn't go through.
Don't see anyone picking up T-Mo in the near future.

Exactly. Don't know hat anything has changed either for the Fed to rule otherwise.

I think this has been rumored for a while and I don't think it will ever happen. T-mobile's patent company, Deutsche Telekom, is a massive company and I don't think they would let tmo go.

>O/C GalaxyGS4<
yeah as it was said AT&T tried to buy them out and the US government put a big red flag in that. people (such as myself) are leaving sprint to go with tmo because of the better service and price. plus, not sure if youve seen/heard the commercials but AT&T are trying to stay afloat by copying tmo's not contract deals... oh and to the guy who said something about a tv company buying a cell company.... even though verizon started as a phone company im fairly certain that their tv/internet service is pretty amazing.

Sprint should have went under along tine ago, even metro is better than them

On the other hand Tmo can take over Sprint and put that company out of business once and for all and put their customers out of their misery.
Sprint will be a lot better in a year. They have cash now because of Softbank. I was surprised they came out with the plans they did just recently but hopefully they lower them so that should help all of us.

Sprint will never have good towers. They are trash. They've had two years to improve since I've left them. My cousin still has them. They suck. They aren't going anywhere.

I'd have little problem with Dish, it could end up benefiting both sides. Still, T-Mobile stands to benefit less from a takeover now than they would have in the past. On the upswing as a carrier, or so it seems.
US wants 4 "major" carriers so unlikely tmo and sprint would merge anymore than tmo and at&t merger was approved by feds.
As for Dish (puke) they can't hardly run tv without being aluminum siding/used car salesmen. They'd be worse than the old nextel (which is where sprint got 95% of their terrible rape, pillage and burn customer service habits).
Full disclosure: was sprint customer almost 10 years (yes im a suicidal masochist lol) before givi g up in disgust & going to att for 3 and now on tmo.
TBH, only went with tmo because of pretty seamless wifi calling (no carrier signal works worth a dam at my house)
