Questions about HDMI dock - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

First of all, I already ordered original Samsung MHL adapter, as it's much cheaper, and I will use it from time to time. I also got the audio dock for charging, and not use the usb. And ordered original Samsung OTG adapter.
Now for my questions, from what I know, the HDMI dock can charge, and use HDMI to connect to TV, but it's limited to videos only? or not?
and second question, what if I connect OTG adapter to the microUSB on the dock? will it work? or it same limited port, like in MHL adapter?

What, no buddy here have the HDMI dock?

I read something somewhere that running pre-4.0.4 stock would actually allow the HDMI dock to function as a mirror. I didn't have this with AOKP 4.0.3 however. My phone is limited to just video (Currently 4.0.4 AOKP). I'd love it if I had the option to use the dock for mirroring.
The OTG adapter shouldn't work with the USB port, as it's limited to charging, no data. Says so in the manual for the dock.

Ohh, I just not sure if to cancel the order of MHL adapter, sure it's more handy, and small, so if I go to a friend, I can get the adapter with me...
The thing is, that here: http://www.droid-life.com/2012/03/23/review-samsung-galaxy-nexus-hdmi-portrait-desktop-dock/
according to manual it say:

So they recommend to update the ROM to thelatest, but they also say it limited to video only. on other hand, pre 4.0.4....yes you guess it, there was no any dock settings in the ROM, but it worked just like the much cheaper MHL adapter, I already spent some cash on the Pogo Dock, so my microUSB stay still ,
I know it more good looking with the dock, but if it really limited, then **** Samsung.
P.S, can anybody here comment on latest stock 4.0.4? is there same limitation to video only? because, you see, I have HTPC in one room, and watch movies and other stuff with it, so spent money on some sheet I may use from time to time, is stupid, as the Pogo Dock at least save my microUSB port, and even have line out with an option to use optical cable, but the HDMI dock, only can show videos, so why the **** I need it then ? I do see it good with emulators if I not at hotel or something, but if MHL adapter can mirror, and it cost much much less, why buy that dock? also some aftermarket HDMI docks can mirror the screen, like that:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Samsung-Gal...s_Adapters&hash=item2ebd72c665#ht_2529wt_1859
hell, that thing, can charge, sync, and mirror hdmi, and even can work with phone in a case, **** Samsung guys, aftermarket sometimes can be over 9000 times better that original, to bad there no pogo aftermarket one.

Bump

I have both OEM OTG adapter and MHL adapter for my GNex. I am running IMM76K deodexed, zipaligned. I can view files from flash drive, connect external drive, or do almost anything you can do with a computer using OTG adapter. And I can mirror phone on TV w/ MHL adapter w/sound and everything.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA

The thing is, that the phone recognize the dock as a different accessory, not like regular MHL adapter, but most people I asked, on 4.0.4 it not mirror .
anyway I ordered the MHL adapter, and OTG, original Samsung BTW, I will need them just in case, but that case both cost less then that crap dock, but I could not resist not to buy the pogo dock , I know it not cheap, but it a cheap price for working micoUSB port
PS, check Kidigi docks, they support MHL, and even can charge second battery, sync, charge, and fit a phone with a case on it.

I bought the official pogo desktop dock from the Play Store for my GSM Nexus with CM9 nightly on it.
The dock's micro USB port ONLY works for charging!
If you plug it into a computer's USB, it will charge but will not connect, manually even says not to plug it into the computer because it may damage the dock, says to use a charger.
So not sure if OTG will work or not.

I just opened the box. Plugged in a USB drive in the back of the dock, no power is being supplied to the drive. I am not using an OEM Samsung otg cable. If undock and plug in the USB drive straight tot the phone it world no problem.
I will try with a powered HD and ill experiment with mirroring and non video outputs
edit: the dock does work with the OEM extended battery (w/ no case), it's a little tight, but actually fits pretty good

microUSB to audio ? (+ power source?)

Hello friends, I was a previous owner of the Galaxy S1 which had an incredible placement of the 3.5mm and the power connection
Basically when I use my phone on the car, I used to connect both cables on the same side of the phone and I would get audio on my stereo system while charging the phone (I used a normal dock to hold my phone)
But now with the GS2 I have a huge problem. The Micro-USB connection is at the bottom and the 3.5mm is at the top... This creates a huge problem for me at my car so...
I'm looking for a Micro-USB adapter that gives me both audio and another microUSB slot (So I can power my phone)
Does such thing exist or is it only possible to have one of them? Not both?
I also thought about buying the Desk dock and finding a place to fit it to my car, but that's very troublesome because the official GalaxyS2 dock is expensive and huge...
Just thought about this. Would a Micro-USB splitter work ? On the split connections I would connect the power and the Micro-USB to 3.5mm adapter
I also found this from Palm

I would love to find out about this as well, but I seriously doubt any good solution exists besides the stock dock.

It's £34 but worth it IMO. Any reason why you don't want a screen mount? I have mine right at the bottom of the screen and it's never come off and is quite discreet.

Destroys some of the aesthetic of the car. I have a MINI Cooper and the holder I used was on the cupholder down by the Gear knob. All the cables were hidden and right by hand.
I'll try the Car dock since it has both charging and audio sources... But I think the cheaper solution would be the mini USB splitter.
I'll try both.
I'm interested in this too!
You need a micro usb connector.
Pin 1 connect to +5V
Pin 2 + 3 connect to audio l + r, Ground to Pin 5
Pin 4 connect to Pin 5 via 620k Ohm Resistor -> this triggers Car dock mode
Pin 5 connect to Ground
Go to Settings/Dock Settings/Audio-Output-mode
Pin 1 is right when the connector is in the SGS II and the screen is visible.
Voila, ALexander
This is also interesting to me.
I currently have a HTC Desire HD, and it does'nt send audio out via microUSB, so in the car I have a passive holder and connect a 3.5mm and a microUSB to charge and play music at the same time.
Anyway, I'm soon getting a Galaxy S II from work, and was wondering about the audio out and charging.
My car has an USB input, does the SGS both charge and output audio at the same time via the microUSB port? (My old Desire did )
If you feel like soldering:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321491
The official car dock has a screw connection for the cradle to attach to the suction mount so you could take it off.
IMO it is a great piece of kit and holds the phone securely even with the extended battery.
I bought the original samsung car dock but I'm having some issues:
- If I plug the USB directly to the car stereo USB port, the USB is not mounted.
- If I receive a call, the audio do not output from dock audio-out. If i plug the audio cable to the cell audio out, I can hear the call from car speakers, but not if plugged directly to car dock audio-out. Btw, if no audio cable is plugged, I can hear the call from SGS2 internal speakers.
Does anyone can help me?
1. i think the micro usb port is only for charge, not data...
2. this is the normal behavior of this car kit....ask to samsung why didn't make audio calls going out through usb connector. As this is about software maybe can be forced in some way by a modded kernel, but i couldn't find anything around...
Phone calls work through my car - via the micro usb.
It depends on the kernel you are using.
I use westcrip 8.6 ics rom - everything works fine.
I'm using CheckROM... it even if I use a specific APK I was unable to reproduce the sound through the dock audio-out.
Anyway, I can't belive that USB plug cannot mount. If I use a normal cable I'm able to mount, but with the dock I can't.

Epic touch 4G HDMI dock question

Is there a dock for the epic touch 4G which can do HDMI out ? I have seen some which say charge and sync but what if I attached the mhl adapter for HDMI out to the back of the charger where I am supposed plug in the charge or USB cable ?
I want some thing nice to put the phone in when I do HDMI out. I figure I could leave the HDMI cord plugged into the dock and that way whenever I put it on the dock and go straight to HDMI mount. Works well because the mhl adapter has a charger cable
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
not exactly sure what u are asking but i believe if you look at mhl adapters they should have a port for the charger on the side. this way its sends hdmi out and charge at same time but dont quote me on that . good luck.

Well some docks have a slot for you to plug a micro sd slot like for a wall charger or a USB adapter to connect to a of or charge.
My idea is connect the HDMI out cord to that slot on a dock and hook into the tv. The HDMI adapter has a seperate slot to hook up the phone charger so the phone can still be powered.
Perhaps we could even then take the USB charge cable and attatch it to a pc and mount etc if needed

I have an mhl adapter. It has a micro usb on the side for charging. in order for it to work with a non mhl TV you have to plug the charger in. Newer TVs can charge via hdmi. I plugged the mhl into my stereo receiver and it charges but my older JVC LCD requires the charging cable

Doubt it, as I've tried connecting phone to computer for a simple file transfer but it would not see the data connection. Removing the dock from the equation worked which makes me believe that dock forces the charge-only mode. I do also have hdmi/mhl adapter but too lazy to dig it out and test it
HDMI dock
Ok. So I got a dock off amazon to try this out and it does work. I recorded a video to show it on you tube too.
I took my MHL cable with usb power to side and plugged the micro usb that would normally go into the phone into the back of the dock where the power goes. Put in phone and bam there it goes. Now if only I could find a way to disable the screen while mirroring. It slowly drains the battery even with extra power. Now to hook up bluetooth controller and play old school games
PS. I noticed i actually do gain a charge when my phone is in airplane mode with wifi on. Could just be my poor signal here causing drain.
Here's a link to the dock I'm using.

HDMI Dock
Cant post a link to an hdmi dock for the e4gt but I purchased one on ebay made by KiDigi. It works well but I wish the screen would shut off when outputting hdmi instead of mirroring.
It's likely that the micro usb port on the side of the dock is only wired for power and has no data capacity.

do i have to get the dock in order to be able to play the hdmi from my phone to my tv or can i just get a mhl adapter?
You only need the mhl cable. Mono price had then for cheaper. Then you plug your phone charger into the side of mhl cable. Then hdmi to TV and adapter.

Looking for a micro usb to rca adapter for tv

Hey everyone, I unfortunately don't have an HDTV, so I can't use an MHL adapter. So can anybody recommend to me a good micro USB to RCA adapter that I can use on a TV?
Ummm wow. Uh you can pick up a MHL adapter and maybe try to convert HDMI to VGA (analog signal) then VGA to RCA.
The HDMI to VGA convert the signal from digital to analog required for what your looking to do.
I suggest monoprice for the adapters because it may not work. I think the phone requires some kind of communication from the TV before it will output at all.
Maybe go to radio shack and ask them. They work off commission and usually let you try the parts in the store before you buy it.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus CM9
Asus Transformer Revolver
I was looking at monoprice and I couldn't seem to find one cable that would do it, and I was hoping that I didnt have to use adapters on adapters to get the job done.
I found this on amazon: http://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00...&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=463383511&pf_rd_i=915398

but unfortunately it goes from the headphone jack, which I would assume doesnt send out the picture quite as good as from the usb, but hey for less than a buck (canadian) what do i got to loose right?
But I would still like some suggestions on what I could use through the micro usb
Please don't order that you are wasting your money, the phone doesn't support analog out of the headphone jack. Also you can't convert a digital picture to analog via cables. There is no way to go from HDMI to RCA without expensive conversion in which case you should just buy a HD TV.
Damn not the news I was hoping for, thanks though for the insight!
Search Amazon for B0047PDBP0, you've looking for an HDMI to composite (not component) video converter. However, even a cheap one is ~$50 and the quality won't be great even with a good one. You may be better off putting that $50 towards an HDTV. Amazon also has a few cheap 720p models in the $100-150 range.
Really??????

Without d/a conversion the signal is still digital and not analog regardless of the plug(s) the adapter changes the HDMI cable into. If your screen supports a digital input, then it might work, but I doubt it does.
if you already have an MHL cable, then youre $50 away from getting what you want http://www.monoprice.com/products/p...&cagpspn=pla&gclid=CNiDrvDUmLQCFelDMgoduyAAtg

Personally i'd just buy the cheapest MHL adaptor you can find. It's just a cable so why pay a fortune for it.
It's not just a cable -- there are some electronics inside (that's why they need a charger input).
Have you ordered one yet? I'd be interested in knowing which is the best option and weather there's any reason to avoid the really cheap ones?
gonna grab myself a cheap one of these adaptors and get my emulator groove on, on the big screen.. though god knows how gba games are going to look at 32inches...probably not great.
No.is only cable.
I got official samsung and it is working fine
I have the first one, if your phone is not in airplane mode the screen on your tv often goes completely black. You have to reconnect the mhl cable to display the screen on your tv again. Annoying when watching videos but putting your phone into airplane mode fixes this completely.
Quality is great, downloading a movie and watching it looks incredible, full HD. However if you plan on watching youtube videos on your TV, I suggest you download the app TubeMate, it allows you to stream YT videos in a much higher quality than the standard app.

MHL Adaptor
I bought one a few days ago from Amazon.co.uk, offical Samsung for £14.99 with free delivery, bargain in my opinion.
You have to connect the Samsung charger to power it (although i haven't tested it without the charger to see if it still works). The phone battery seems to drain really fast with the MHL outputting via HDMI, and gets a little warm also, both cores doing their bit no doubt.
Have to say i'm very happy with, and the CEC function (if your tv supports it) is the icing on the cake. With it, you can use your tv's remote (or any ALL in One as in my case [Logitech]) to control the phone navigation, you can play games using the remotes d-pad, and use it to click on items in the menu, or on the internet, rewind, pause and fast forward videos.
I too had the screen blacking out on me as one person mentioned earlier, espcially when playing games, I'll try and see what flight mode does for it, but my conclusions where a less than perfect HDMI cable, as when i tested it on my brothers tv it worked flawlessly without a single blackout (Using a HDMI cable supplied with his SKY+ box).
Might have to buy one of these but i'm still looking for a solution to sending audio NOT over the HDMI since I don't have a HDMI input on my monitors, only DVI. Either over analogue 3.5mm out or bluetooth would be fine!
I think the reason it drains the battery still is because it is using the data pins to send the video. For fast charge these pins would usually be shorted and you can't have both. (That's my understanding anyway!)

Last night with a friend we were discussing some stuff about the Ouya, and the next idea came into my mind: I would only purchase one because of the emulators and being able to connect it via HDMI. But wait, I can actually do that with my phone. What if I plug in an HDMI cable, a PS3 joystick and the charger into my ZL? It would be a nice way to play PS1 or N64 games. But yes, then I realized that the phone only has one USB entrance, which is the same for any of the above mentioned pheripherals.
So, what brings me here is the following question: are there any USB adapters with multiple slots compatible with our phone? If I tried a generical PC one, would it work? Or using three different functions in a hole that's made to support one at a time could damage the phone?

One of these, for example (combined with a mini-usb adapter on the cable), would work?
Thanks in advance, and best regards =)
I don't know if our ZL can handle multiple USB devices. But if you want to try it, you would need a USB Hub with external power supply because I don't think that our phone can put out that much power.
I think the Ouya has several device-exclusive games, but the ZL can play indeed Android games and emulators.
However, I think the only way to do what you have in mind is to:
1) Connect the PS3 'joystick' via Bluetooth. That way, you won't have to use the MicroUSB port.
2) Have an MHL cable for the MicroUSB to HDMI.
However, with point #2, powering the device will still be uncertain. The MHL (2.0) specs allow for powering your device when connected, but
A) Your TV will have to support MHL as opposed to HDMI.
or
B) Your MHL-to-HDMI adapter works as backward compatible HDMI, and requires external power to work.
In both cases I don't know whether the phone will charge and if it even does, whether the power will be sufficient to compensate for the (added bluetooth) power usage of the device.
It is for this 'contraption' that I initially wanted a device with both MicroUSB and MicroHDMI port, so more connectivity would be possible.
Anyway, I ordered all accessories I need to test this (but I don't have an MHL-supporting TV), expect info on this as I find it out.

The concept is interesting but the problem with the ZL is the battery life, if the battery will not be able to get charge, you only be able to use it for around a hour or hour and half playing games or watching videos from a 100%.

I hooked up my ZL to my monitor yesterday, using MHL to HDMI. Output worked when I supplied power to the adapter, sourced from the monior's built-in USB hub. The ZL was charging while the MHL cable was connected.
I streamed a 1080P MKV movie over local WIFI , other services(data connection/bluetooth/NFC) were turned off. After the movie was done, I checked the power usage and the battery level had remained pretty much the same throughout the movie.
So I think with MHL to HDMI, the device is only able to retain its battery level, rather than charging it to full. Having said that, the screen was turned on the entire time throughout the output; if I can turn off the screen while viewing, this could save the battery some more.
I'll perform more tests this weekend; I want to use Bluetooth as input device (I've somewhat given up on having Infra Red controls) and have audio played through the ZL speaker rather than over HDMI to my monitor (that has no speakers built in). Ideally I would want to combine this with my USB Host / OTG 4-port USB hub, but alas MHL and USB Host are mutually exclusive on this device.
