Will HTC One V get an upgrade to Android 5 JellyBean? ?? I have already bought this phone but some people say that I've done a mistake and I should have bought a phone with dual core so that I would be able to upgrade it to JellyBean? HAVE I DONE A MISTAKE?? My price range was just Rs.18,000.
The HTC One V has an unlocked bootloader and the kernel source is released. If Jelly Bean doesn't arrive through official means, I think you'll find it'll get it unofficially.
I do not see why a single core device would not be able to run Jelly Bean.
1gh is enough for JB. if JB will be improved in terms of speed and smoothness and using less resources then it will be just fine for One V. From GB to ICS it is a major jump because the whole system is cleaned and the clutter is removed (from within android internally) and you can see why. ICS is moving faster than GB on a device as old as Htc Hero (2009 released).
how about our one v RAM? Its always under 100mb in normal use. Will it be able to handle JB ?
Im worried RAM will be an obstacle for one v to get JB update
Jelly Bean hasn't even been announced yet. I don't think there are any answered to the question. Nobody even knows for sure what changes it will bring.
But internet says it will not!
I read on the net that JB will not support Single Core 1Ghz processors and even some Dual Core processors...!!!!

They said hat even for gingerbread which even 500mhz processors run beautifully!
So no need to worry and I can guarantee that we will get JB! if not hTC then I will try...I am still learning compiling from source!
Im just gonna wait for some generous devs to port it..

It's like that on stock rom running sense + icecream. What did you expected? from 512 mb ram, to have 500 free?!
After you've installed a custom rom without sense that eats a lot of ram, you will have enough ram for yourself.
One V will maybe won't get OFFICIAL JB update, but it will definitely be ported once it is released and sources are out.
And dudes, come on! You are waiting for port? IT IS NOT EVEN LAUNCHED YET! You have ICS, play with it. I am stuck on Chocolate - Eclair - GB roms from 2009. I had ICS on my current phone but some things are not working correctly because it is a port and it is not done. If I were you I will love every moment that ICS + sense has to offer.
I can't wait to buy the One V... 8 more days!
All you guys complaining about RAM (in this topic and the other one in Q&A) need to relax - that's just how Android works. Android will free up memory when it needs it. I'm not an expert but my understanding is that its memory management is drastically different to OSes like Windows and OS X.
This is the same reason why stuff like task killers are terrible. 512MB RAM is easily fine for ICS and will probably be fine for JB too (on an 800x480 screen anyway).

Agreed. It makes you wonder what Google's software engineers supposedly overlooked that someone had to come behind and fix. What Supercharger does is not secret. If Google wanted to, they could buy it and put into the stock kernel but I don't see that happening.
On an experiential level, the only ROM with Supercharger kernel that I ever used was a great ROM, but it's performance was not noticeably better than a regular overclocked kernel. In fact, it had a greater tendency to hesitate and lag my Wildfire S.
Why do you guys complaining about Ram?? HD2 has 1ghz cpu with 512 mb Ram [up to 576mb] and it runs all custom Roms perfectly!

Since HTC have revealed the HTC One V for Q2 of this year. Do you reckon some devs will be able to port the RUU over to the HTC Desire?
If you don't know what it is; it can be found here: http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...bile-phones/hands-on-htc-one-v-review-1066217
It states it has a single core 1Ghz CPU and sense 4.0 on top of ICS. Do you think this could be run smoothly on our two year old Desire's once HWA is fully fixed?

a) even if it has 1GHz single core cpu, it for sure is not one from 2008
b) Sense 3.5 doesn't work smoothly, so mine (possibly broken) logic says that it probably won't.
c) I for one couldn't care less if it gets ported or not. I know that software version is one part of the coin, where no number of updates will change the fact what Desire fundamentally is - a two year old with archaic architecture.

I doubt it'll get fixed.
As above, even though its a 1ghz processor, the desires technology is now outdated. Its possible we may get some sense 4.0 with ICS but who knows.
Will just have to wait and see what we get
If hwa is delt with I'm sure we might get sense 4.0 but won't let my hopes go up just yet. Although One V has a newer cpu/gpu so do Sensation/Evo3D/Amaze which run sense 3.0/5 (custom) much like I run it on my desire. There's not that much multitasking in comparison but it's running stable and very, very fast. Comparable to the best sense 1/2.0 roms out here. And it seems that sense 4.0 is lighter on ram since V has just 512mb compared with desires 576. My 2c.

Well, there's "smooth" and and there's "sense 3.5 smooth". I've tried most 3.0+ roms but I don't think that people here truly understand what smooth is. I was one of those people. Then I tried oxygen (Mildwild's version to be precise) and it utterly ruined sense for me. I just can't go back.
Although I do miss sense from time to time
Wasn't talking about aosp, miui or cm7. Imho, sense will never be as fast. But that's not the topic of this thread anyway.
-. typewrited .-
I thought AceS 3D port of Sense 3.0 was smooth - but then I went to ICS 0.3.x beta's and was amazed how quick and responsive it was even as a beta.
I do like Sense a lot- especially the camera and people apps but it's days are numbered where ICS is concerned... still wouldn't want to go to stock Gingerbread to be honest but it's probably heaps smoother still
AceS smooth?
It was very, very slow and huge in ram.
I wasn't able to open tweet deck when playing music!
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
If aosp roms I've only tried mildwild and my current sense rom is at least as fast, if not faster... Not bragging or something. It's an objective opinion. I was really disappointed, since everyone here seems to think otherwise.
One V uses a S2 CPU. The Desire has a S1.
Although, interestingly, the V has slightly less RAM than the Desire.
If ROMs get ported, I don't think there will be RAM issues, but there will be a lot of lag issues etc.

As launches go, other than the Teg3 graphics issues (flickering), it hasn't been that bad. Most of the major issues have been addressed between 1.29.07 and 1.29.11 and supposedly there's another update to follow. Rather than compare the phone to "perfect," compare it to other high-end phone launches. You'll see it's not as bad as a lot of people are making it out to be.

Probably not.
We have 2.6.39, the first ICS was based on 3.0.1., or if they hadn't had a massive pointless renumbering, would have been called 2.6.41.
I guess the reason people haven't moved up is because in mainline they started moving all the arm specific files around and consolidating features between the different architectures. This will make it easier in the future, but merging changes when all the files have moved is a ballache.

The One S and XL are on 3.0 so if Nvidia gets off their lazy asses you can assume Teg3 devices will move up too. All the new Asus, Acer, and Toshiba (some not even released yet) tablets are using Teg3 so I can’t imagine the manufacturers being OK leaving them on an outdated kernel forever. It would make sense though to update the kernel at the same time the OS is updated to 4.0.4 which could be weeks to months away. No one but Nvidia knows for sure what the answer will be.

Would like to know too, whats our disadvantage from now being on 3.0 ??.
In short.
In details.
And one more for the hope we get upto date kernels!
As already mentioned several times, there are no special landmark
features or incompatibilities related to the version number change,
it's simply a way to drop an inconvenient numbering system in honor of
twenty years of Linux. In fact, the 3.0 merge window was calmer than
most, and apart from some excitement from RCU I'd have called it

We’ve heard your feedback on our decision not to update the HTC Desire HD to Android 4.0. We completely understand that this is a controversial decision.
For more background, due to how storage on the HTC Desire HD is partitioned – and the larger size of Android 4.0 – it would require re-partitioning device storage and overwriting user data in order to install this update. While technically advanced users might find this solution acceptable, the majority of customers would not. We also considered ways to reduce the overall size of the software package, but this would impact features and functionality that customers are currently using. Even after installing the update, there were other technical limitations which we felt negatively impacted the user experience.
We believe an update should always improve the user experience and carefully evaluate each update based on this criteria. While we are very aware of the disappointment from this decision, we believe the impact to user experience was too great. We recognize this is a change from our previous statement and for that we’re truly sorry.

Yup, totally agreed.
Standard users would never understand a full wipe due to repartioning. The other issue is the battery, to small...period. When HTC said "other technical limitations" I'm sure this was one. Sure, XDA got ics onto the HD, congrats, bet we hear noob complaints about battery, lag, etc.
The one thing they ****could**** do is the same they did for us, a stripped down ics ROM with "reduced functionality" released on HTC dev. That should placate the power users, the rest.....will not even notice.

Agreed again,
HTC always designs things a bit close for confort, or to put it in a pocketnow writers words "they always design their phones with at least one fatal flaw.".
I believe things are getting better though, for example the sensation had almost 2gb reserved for the various system partions, the entire one series has close to 4gb (couldn't be bothered to look up the actual partions...irrevelvant anyways). Some noobs on the One V forum were complaining about the partion sizes as close to 2gb are literally unused at this time. To me, that means room for future updates (though with only 512mb of ram.....how good? Hence the one tragic flaw arguement).
I messed with sense 2.1, 3.0, 2.1 / 3.0 hybrids, 3.5, etc but since May I am back to gb with sense 1.9. The only combo that really works on our desires.
I wish the current devs well, new things are always fun, but if you want a truelly functioning daily driver running the best our hardware is capable of, that is gingerbread with old sense, or aosp........period.

Speechless as it is much weaker than our SGW, in term of CPU & GPU, the only thing it wins is the amount of RAM
There are a lot of ICS phones with 512MB RAM from HTC & Sony, if Samsung is willing to give us support, we would get ICS without problem for sure since Samsung got a big team to work it out, really quite a bad support from Samsung for our phone, luckily we got Arco and some developers who work hard to bring ICS to us really thankful to them!

yes this is right. support al the dev!!
I always look at the bright side of this.
If sammy release update ICS or JB, then we will loose the excitement of custom ROM.
What I mean is like the waiting time of new custom ROM version, the moment when devs release new update and we download it and flash it to our beloved SGW. It's so exciting!!!
Here, we have many custom ROMs and every new release is getting better and better. To be honest, I might prefer custom ROM. Because even if sammy release update, I'm sure it will full with sammy's bloatware.
One day, I met other SGW user. He is just a regular user and don't know anything about flashing. He looked at my phone and say: whoaa..!!! how did you do that?? Can you do it to my phone??
My point is: I DON'T CARE if sammy release update or not. As long as there are custom ROMs, that's more than enough for me
maybe we are not worried about this because there are custom rom. but I feel sorry for those who use stock rom and hope about rom upgrade.

Yes but surely ROMs like Cyanogen 9 would be much further along and have taken less time to develop and debug if an official Sammy ICS ROM for Galaxy W had been available as a starting point for modding/improving.

As long as there are custom ROMs, that's more than enough for me

you're not completely right, for example if we had official ics we would not reverse engineer camera and some other hw, so creating 4.x customs would be easier, but we had just to rely on our devs and huawei u8860 software

Developers would be able to customized ICS if a stock ICS is already available than creating from scratch. ICS is different from GB. Thats why devs are having difficulties in fixing stuffs like camera for phones that do not have ICS. Devs would love to use working libs for ICS phone-related components. Then porting JB would be much faster too since little is different from ICS.

wat da fak sammy?
that phone have similar hardware configuration like our phone, just 800Mhz dual core cpu and 768Mb ram, I guess its about 500Mb because 268Mb
deserved for system, and mali-400MP GPU. Just a slight improvisation from our i8150.

I realize that. But I also know that pissing off to sammy and curse them won't change anything.
What I mean is instead of pissing off to sammy, we should be grateful because we have devs that work very hard porting ICS for our phone.

Jelly Bean comes to support phone with NFC device. I think that the cause of the making jelly Bean to Ace 2. Don't worry guys... We have development Forum, we have developers and we have Arco. Not to mention, but ace 2 has no their own thread. You check on search box, no ace 2 comes out. Lol. Probably that's why Sammy feel pity for them and make them a jelly Bean. LMFAO.

I really wish this was true, and I wish Sammy would bring this update out NOW!
Not because I have one of these phones, but because that firmware could be the base for the developers working on our Wonder. That means it's gonna be easier to port, and we'll have a stable CM10 in no time! :highfive:
I'm proud owner of both hTC Desire and hTC One V. I rooted and s-offed Desire some time ago, tried variety of ROMs and currently using it as daily driver with Evervolvs KitKat nightly installed.
I bought HOV as a replacement for my old Desire and was badly suprised when HOV started to lag. Placing a call or starting an SMS sometimes takes up to 2 minutes. Using it on daily basis is near to imposible. I didn't think of rooting HOV since I still have warranty. Now I changed my mind, which brings me to my question.
Should I go with that and root, etc. , or should I stick with Desire, which currently works more fluid than HOV? Will HOV get that much better with custom ROM, or should I just sell it and forget it? Any opinion is appreciated. Thanks.

HOV is better with a custom ROM.. the stock One V ROM is slow at times... it's one of the reasons why I rooted
@MameTozhio has right. My One V was really slow and I rooted it when it has 1 year and 3 months. Now this phone is really smooth and really fast but don't use ROMs like mySensev because it's like stock slow but really pretty(animations etc, full sense)

Really good ROMs are:
Sense
Ignorance V4(V3 is good too better battery life)
HTCdroid(Really pretty and fast)
AOSP
Shpongle
NexusPrimo
ParanoidAndroid(AOSPA)
Upcoming:
TrippedOutROM(4.2.2) Really stable fast smooth WiFi doesn't work
The problem with the One V is ram. You can be using something like slim bean completely stripped down to the bare minimum of system applications and data apps and it still fails on you. Just use the stock browser on one or two pages and the entire device will freeze up requiring a reboot. Horrible. In truth we need a way to move many apps out of the system partition to either true sd or at the very least to the data partition. And I do not suggest anyone purchase virgin mobiles version of the htc desire unless you want the same issues again. Best off buying something else.

But, as I understand, I can use some kind of SD-EXT to expand RAM? Or am I wrong? On Desire i have a2sd script and it is working like a charm..

A2SD works. Expand RAM works for me. I've got 2GB of RAM now(32GB SD+64GB HDD disc connected to One V).
