How long if/when will we see Android 4.0.4/5 on HOX - HTC One X

Will this now be our next major update for the HOX ?
Reading the changlog on version .4 improves/updates more than 100 issues over .3
And looks to be a major improvment!
Although sense might be as good/better already in some areas.
One thing we know for certain......mainland Europe will get it first!
I have heard a comment of "we haven't even got version 3 of the kernel yet"......what is the significance of this ?

I had it on my Galaxy Nexus before I sold it and didn't notice anything different over 4.0.3 personally. It was more a bug fix release than anything else
Still, it would be nice to get it as it's out! Having said that, HTC skipped over 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 so they may skip over this too

Interesting, you could be right, I see the nexus was due to get .5 in April did that happen ?
Does it stop at .5 then move to Android 5 ?

I bet we just skip straight to Jelly bean and Sense 4.5

There is no official release date for it yet, in fact "The Wall Street Journal quotes a source that says Jelly Bean will be released by Thanksgiving (November 22, 2012)."
So if released in November it would take HTC a few months to test it before they release it, hence the "Two X" March/April 2013

4.0.5 isn't on the Nexus btw

That's been delayed then, there is a good review here http://www.androidauthority.com/android-4-0-3-vs-4-0-4-vs-4-0-5-75651

The 4.0.5 update would appear to be for the Verizon Nexus only, and not the GSM handset, so it may not reach other GSM handsets either

Pretty sure we'll get jelly bean, if HTC stick by their track record then they'll debut it on a new phone no doubt.
but it would be nice if they don't and we get it straight away.

I belive the version 3 kernel refer to kernel for the Tegra chip made by Nvidia, Currently the latest version is 2.6, think this is made for Gingerbread.
One good thing about Samsung phones running Exnose is the chip is designed in-house, so there is not depending on 3rd parties to supplies the kernel.

There wasent any new features added to a varsion 3 kernal, just minor bug fixes, the reason for the version change was to tidy up the version number, I think the web site for it was www.kernel.org. else google it

I hope Nvidia can reduce the power usage for Tegra 3. I did a test of leaving the phone idle at 50% brightness, the battery died after 7hrs and 43 mins. However, I can not get more the 3 hrs screen on time in normal (none gaming) daily use.

there are several versions of 4.0.4 out already. check modaco forums.

Google announced 2.4 at Google I/O 2011 the other day, but didn't say that 2.4 was Ice Cream. I think 2.4 is just an updated Gingerbread, sort of like 2.0 to 2.1 was still Eclair, and 3.0 to 3.1 is still Honeycomb. I have a feeling Ice Cream will be something more like 3.2 or higher, since it's supposed to be the fusion of Honeycomb and Gingerbread and cover all devices.
That being said, I'm hopeful that Google will cover us with the update, since HTC is one of their 18 partners that promises to give quick OS updates within 18 months of the device releasing, of which the end of this year still would cover us.

Most refs on the 'net state the next version's number to be 3.4. They certainly won't be naming is 2.4 since 2.4<3.0. You simply don't go backwards in versioning.

To elaborate a little more on what Gawantu said, at io, Google said they partnered with the manufacturers and carriers, including HTC and Motorola, to bring out updates for up to 18 months after a device is released. But how quickly hasn't been said.
Honestly though, if it took the CM team just 4 months to bring CM7 stable to 20 something devices including a couple tablets, with different hardware, while doing it in their spare time all the while having to reverse engineer and hack their way through it. It shouldn't take any longer for the professional developers at say, HTC, to bring an update to a few that are similarly spec'd and have all the resources to do so even while making a new version of Sense.

So now that we have that super important technicality out of the way, any speculation as to whether or not we'll see ICS as an OTA update? I'm hesitant to assume that we will. I think CM8 is our best hope. Or CMwhatever.
CM9, lol
but HTC is really debating on relasing or not because of something to do with sense and they want to figure out which direction today... best bet is going to have to wait for CM9 like all of us are doing so impatiently haha
I wrote a letter to HTC months ago asking the future upgrade

Yeah scrap the Android 4 AOSP petition.
Lets make it Android 4 Sense this time and then Android 5 AOSP.
We can also send a petition to Qualcom to make and release a code to make the Desire processor dual core.
ICS is running fairly decently on Desire and Nexus One I'd say - still bugs but there's massive progress
we all cant wait until ICS is 100% working will be the day we all fall in love with our Desire again
I am amazed how smooth the ICS ASOP Rom is. But I'm back to Gingerbread and I don't think I'll update to 5.0 any time. I bought the Desire nearly two years ago right at the beginning and the development during this time was great.
IMHO it isn't necessary to update a two year old device to the newest os version.
I want ICS to work on the Desire. HTC still love it. They're just too lazy to get working software on older hardware.
Why not, why not. One reason more to work on 3.x kernel.

HUGE requirements will continue the fragmentation.
Devices like the desire hd or similar, wich gets ics, but will be stuck on 4.0.
About 30% will be stuck on GB because of the grow of android this year, but will be smaller, as most new devices launch with ics.
And so on.
Updating should be like IOS, when an ipad 1 or iphone 3gs is still upgradeable to ios 5.1.1, wich has been released 2 weeks ago.
These are limited in the app store, but who cares?
Sent from my GT-S5660 using xda premium
That's the difference between a monopolized environment and a liberal one. Monopoly is easier to control, predict and dictate. But don't be as naive as to think apple doesn't turn obsolete old equipment with their OS upgrades. The timeline is just much more dilated than those of the less controled environments.

This is incorrect for two reasons.
1. It is not an OTA update, that will not arrive until sometime July. It is a preview build that was leaked and can be installed on any GNex.
2. Just because a GNex build was released, does not mean the source is available.
This makes me super excited. Just watch this youtube clip:

I don't think an official jb is really needed,at least for me. Jmz's sense Rom is awesome, fast and if you add the linaro kernel you would think you already have jb.

The problem is with these phones is that the only get 1 official update before they are obsolete. Most likely the phone will get the official JB update 18 months into its life just when its about to hit the 2 year mark.
