Hey !
I was wondering if there was a way to disable HD quality preset when I'm on wifi.
there's an option to do so for when on a mobile network, but not for wifi, so I have to do it manually every time I watch a video (and I watch a lot of 'em )
otherwise the video keeps pausing every 10 sec because my home wifi isn't fast enough
could someone modify the apk so that it does this automatically ?
thanks in advance

I wish
but my connection is maxed out at 2mbits, not enough to stream 720p youtube videos, doesen't matter how much I pay
me too
Im having the same problem. I wish there was an option to turn off auto hd. Its annoying to switch it off every time. On my screen I see little difference between the two other than hd wont stream without stopping. For the record saying to get faster Internet is a very asshole thing to say. Not everyone is 500m from the exchange here in Australia. And our net sux compared to the rest of the world. Until we get fiber we wont be so fast. It would be nice if youtube didn't assume all wifi networks are that fast. I'll check back if I find out what to do.

I've had this issue on every touchwiz based rom I've run. I would guess that most of the time I can watch a video that's as long as about 2 minutes most times. If it's longer than that I'll usually make it about 50% of the way through the video. When I was running cm7 on this phone I didn't have the problem. I've tried searching bit my terms seem pretty vague and I can't really find anyone else having the problem, or any solutions.
Anyone else ever experience this kind of trouble with the YouTube app? I'm currently on the latest blazer rom but have also tried Caulkilins (I never know how to spell it or pronounce it...but you know which rom I mean ;-) )
Thanks

Had this problem with the Evo and Evo 3d. Also got it on this phone stock when I first bought it. Somehow it just went away since I've flashed Calk's. I think its a problem with YouTube itself.
Epic-ly tapped from my Galaxy S II
I never really had this problem. Hopefully you find a solution.
Lately YouTube app freezes on videos and on epic 4 it foreclose altogether now

It doesn't fc, it just stops playing. I just tried to watch a 3 minute video and the (god forbid) a 10 minute. Nope. Not even close to 2 minutes in on either. Is YouTube that bad now? I don't seem to have this much trouble on my PCs,though I do occasionally have some.
This REALLY bothers me. But others are able to watch videos no problem, eh? This isn't an epidemic ....
Really weird. :-(

Are you on the latest Youtube version?

Try that if not. Once again good luck on the find.
I've been on every single rom. I never had this issue. Are you using ics leak or gb el29? Also do you have good data speeds or a reliable wifi at your house? And did you update your flash player via market?

I'm in your boat my dude. My youtube will just stop playing randomly. It could be 3 mins or 10 mins into the video and it just stops. It really started annoying me until I realized that it was an automatic pause. So I when I touched the screen, it would resume. I don't think anyone is working on a fix though with it being a seemingly small issue.
Mi nuh tek intimidation
I was complaining about this to someone at work the other day...and when I went to show them, it worked fine. I SWEAR I've had this problem at work..but maybe I got my facts confused and just didn't look @ youtube at work beause I didn't want anyone to see how flawed my awesome device was.
tried a few more....everything was good.
Go home....no go. So now I'm wondering if it's my old Linksys WRT54Gv8 running DD-WRT. I upgraded the firmware to the newest stable (mine was from 2008 and upgraded to one that is late 2009). No Luck.
at work I was on wifi also, so...it's not the phone's WiFi.
it works better on 3/4g but freakin wifi should rule them all. my cable is fast as F and other devices in the house don't have issues...weird, eh?
OK so this is a troubleshooting thread at this point. It's a problem with my home wireless.
I tried upgrading the firmware on my DD-wrt router and I think I bricked it. Oh well. It had a decent life. The firmware was from early 2008 and I don't remember when I got it.
So I got a new Linksys/Cisco e3000 and set it up. It doesn't hand out IP addresses or anything. All it does is share my internet connection. Dhcp and DNS is handled by my old windows 2003 domain controller. I get an IP and all seems fine but I've done quite a bit of testing tonight and wireless is slower to begin things (like market, YouTube, etc) than 4g.
My speed test results are great thoughf on wireless. Like....stupid fast. Almost as fast as my connection is. ~25mb.
The initial post was obviously about YouTube and what I'm seeing is on Wi-Fi a video will cache up much faster but it stops at some point. When the playing video reaches that point the video stops and will not start again. When I watch a video on 4g it caches up more slowly, staying just ahead of what's playing. On the rare instance that it catches up I'll get the spinning circle for a second or 200 and it'll start playing again.
The behavior is quite different and I'm not sure what would cause it.
Hoping someone might have some insight here or suggestions .....pretty irritating to not be able to enjoy this awesome phone as much at home as I can at work. I have a lot more time to f off on my phone @ home.
For my home wifi I got the Asus n56u, and also bought a range extender that plugs into an outlet. I have had no connectivity issues and setup was a breeze. Its either your router or your service at this point.

i'm having the same f***ed up issue. after playing vids for 5 mins, it stops suddenly. and its annoying as f** !!! theres got to be a solution to this.
My setup is just overly complicated. I had a 2003 domain controller that does dhcp and DNS, then goes through a virtual machine of a Linux firewall called Untangle. The VM was running within a 2008 server who was also supposed to be a domain controller.
I hated 2008 and wanted to go to R's anyway so I demoted the 2008 server blew away the old untangle install and just started over with 2008r2. Also upgraded from the old free vmware server client (no longer available or supported) and went to vmware workstation and now everything is working great.
I doubt you have the same things.....but....I don't think it was a problem with android or YouTube, but its still weird that no other devices at my house had this problem ....

Hi all, I recently updated to 4.0,4 the IMM76I build via OTA. Noticed a few changes mostly for the positive but a big kicker for me is the app I used to stream radio,
A Online Radio, streams fine when the phone is awake, but as soon as I put it to sleep the stream will start to stutter. It never used to do this on 4.0.2...any suggestions?
Which app? I've been using TuneIn Radio and it works great.
That was the app, its called "A Online Radio"

Oh, Hm sorry lol. Terrible branding.
I'll try it and let you know because like I said TuneIn is great. Is it happening on both WiFi and 3G?
Edit: Downloaded the app and jammed out to some 80's music for a while. On WiFi (I've got a 802.11G router 5ft away and about 12mbps connection) the 96kbps streams were solid, but the 128kbps streams (the few I tried anyways) cut out for 2-3 seconds every 15 seconds or so w/ screen off. Over HSPA+ both 96kbps and 128kbps stations streamed just fine.
Bone stock 4.0.4 IMM76I btw.

Isnt this due to a battery saving feature where the wifi power is reduced when the screen is turned off?
I faced the same issue while downloading huge ROM files. Had to keep the screen awake for the download to finish at higher speed.
Thanks for trying it out, yeah the name is a bit weird but it had a station that just ...sung to me xD.
So far I've tried it only on 3G as I usually listen to it while commuting. Let me try WiFi. Yep happens on WiFi too.
The station I'm using says its using AAC when most others appear to be MP3, also on wifi it says 40kbps.
Lemme try a few other stations...
This 128kps MP3 station seems to stream just fine over HSPA+ full bars.
Testing another
Found a station with 32kps MP3 streams fine with HSPA+....
This leads me to think its the AAC part in station I like to listen to. But it wasn't doing that prior to 4.0.4 so where does the incompatibility lay?
*bump* Any suggestions?
Check this.

Yea, I noticed that with my AAC streams too. I use the XiiaLive app, which has an option to use an internal audio engine (vs. Android's) and that handles AAC streams fine with screen on or off.

Sorry, i didn't read the whole thread. When i found that issue with wifi i found quite some threads about that problem and no solution. After i found a solution, i linked several thread to it, in the hope to help some people with their issues. Sorry i didn't notice that your issue doesn't seem to be related.

You don't have to apologize sir, I thank you for even attempting to help me!
I tried out XiaaLive, that internal engine does seem to help with AAC streaming. Good find, but it doesn't seem to have the station I wanted on A Online Radio. *sigh* Such is life! Thanks all!
Edit: Still curious as to what exactly is causing this in 4.0.4. Could it be similiar to meletons wifi find?

Its melethron btw
Well i'm pretty sure that this is somehow related. Since it happens when the screen is off, its pretty sure some issue with powersaving.
I took a look at telephony documentation, which is similar to the wifimanager. There arent any Options like "wifi lock". Powermanagement for 3g is pretty sure handelned on Kernel level.
Also im not quite sure if this even is a Problem of 3g (the radio) itself. This could also be some CPU throttling.
Anyhow the only way to interfere with powermanagement (without changing the OS itself) is to disable Powermanagement with a "wake lock". While "wifi lock" only disables wifi shutoff or low perf wifi, "wake lock" stops the Powermanagement when screen is off.
I've looked into the Powermanagement documentation and what should help you is a PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK . This causes the screen to go off as normaly, but prevents shutdown of cpu etc. So the phone will run as if screen is on, while it is off.
You could try this with Terminal Emulator (just to test if this helps - I know it uses PARTIAL_WAKE_LOCK cause i checked the source code, which also helped me to figure out that wifi stuff). Just start the app, press menu and select "take WakeLock". DON'T CLOSE the app, start you internet radio and check if it helps after screen goes off.
So i can stream HD on 4 computers while playing Xbox just fine... but the second i turn on the WIFI on the GS3 my data speed dies on most all of my other devices and i can barely stream a SD video without it buffering every 10 seconds.
Anyone else have this issue? Any good ways to track this sort of WIFI vampirism?

Could you have a rogue app that is downloading non-stop? I would go to data usage and see how much data you are using on WiFi. You can enable WiFi usage by hitting menu after entering the data usage under mobile options (I think this is still there on stock ROMs). That may tell you something. Then it gives you a list of apps using the most data and may find your culprit. Just a possible hunch. Either that or your router hates your S3...I've heard/confirmed more unusual things doing tech support.
Ninja Edit: Making the post make more sense.

There's another possible cause.. it might not be the phone at all, but instead your router doing some funky things, especially if you're using DHCP and custom Router Firmware.
I typically make sure all my inhome devices are using a static reserved IP, that way there's no issues ever.
I've also seen issues where routers cannot handle certain security protocols properly, and when a new device connects using one of them, it just stops working entirely.
What I would suggest for the moment is this:
1) First turn all all but ONE device.. say your Xbox for example and see if you get the slowdown with only one device + your phone...
2) Assign all the devices a static IP in your router.. depending on model there are many ways this might be accomplished, google your router's model for info if you've not done this before.
3) Turn off all WiFi encryption for a bit and see if the problem still occurs.
If things get better with any of the above, you can then take steps to figure out if it's a bad router, or just bad settings somewhere.
This is all of course assuming your phone isn't the cause...or you cannot tell from the list of apps.
not sure if anyone is using their phone while tethering to another device but when i tried to use my phone while tethering, i'm getting a lot of drop connection. It's so bad that while using the stock "internet" application to browse the site or streaming music from sites; it won't load. All this goes away when i shut down the hot spot tethering.
i'm on stock ATT rom with no trip counter flash root and tether mod. if you're having this issue or had this in the past, please leave some feedback and comment as to how you've fixed it. thanks
You are probably getting throttled while on the call. AT&T recently implemented a silent throttle of about 1mbps down and 20kbps up while talking on the phone. This makes all but the simplest web browsing impossible. Using the internet while talking on the phone used to be a feature that made AT&T better. Funny, they still advertise it as a benefit.

Since all stock ROMs are really the same - try AOKP and CM10, see if they're better in this regard.
so i wasn't on call. i was actually streaming music online using the stock "internet application" from Sammy. let me try to explain again.
hot spot is enable - stock app from ATT rom and my Asus tablet is connected. i then stream music using the internet application / similar to the "browser" application on the asus through a website. so basically using flash to listen to music online. then i use my Asus tablet to surf the net. when doing that, i can not stream music at all on my phone.
Maybe you just don't have the mobile bandwidth for it? Is your signal strong? Have you tried running a Speedtest to see what kind of DL speeds you're getting?
i'm having a hard time with the speedtest on this S3. first it's connecting to some far away server than the one that i'm used to and the speed is horrendous. .23 up and .20 down - what in the hell is that!
i get a different connection result when i used my tablet and do the speed test while tethering off my phone.
WEird!
Hello.. I bought my phone about 4 months ago, and in all games the connection drops. The games keep on reconnecting to the server, my internet is excellent, I have 100mps upload and 100mps download, on other devices at home I can get that exact speed but my phone struggles to reach even 40mps...
I tried everything but it looks like it's the phone problem what can I do to fix this?
I can't play any game for some time, even at speed tests the test goes down in speed randomly
Thanks for the help
