ATT tethering and internet issue - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

not sure if anyone is using their phone while tethering to another device but when i tried to use my phone while tethering, i'm getting a lot of drop connection. It's so bad that while using the stock "internet" application to browse the site or streaming music from sites; it won't load. All this goes away when i shut down the hot spot tethering.
i'm on stock ATT rom with no trip counter flash root and tether mod. if you're having this issue or had this in the past, please leave some feedback and comment as to how you've fixed it. thanks

You are probably getting throttled while on the call. AT&T recently implemented a silent throttle of about 1mbps down and 20kbps up while talking on the phone. This makes all but the simplest web browsing impossible. Using the internet while talking on the phone used to be a feature that made AT&T better. Funny, they still advertise it as a benefit.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Since all stock ROMs are really the same - try AOKP and CM10, see if they're better in this regard.

so i wasn't on call. i was actually streaming music online using the stock "internet application" from Sammy. let me try to explain again.
hot spot is enable - stock app from ATT rom and my Asus tablet is connected. i then stream music using the internet application / similar to the "browser" application on the asus through a website. so basically using flash to listen to music online. then i use my Asus tablet to surf the net. when doing that, i can not stream music at all on my phone.

Maybe you just don't have the mobile bandwidth for it? Is your signal strong? Have you tried running a Speedtest to see what kind of DL speeds you're getting?

i'm having a hard time with the speedtest on this S3. first it's connecting to some far away server than the one that i'm used to and the speed is horrendous. .23 up and .20 down - what in the hell is that!
i get a different connection result when i used my tablet and do the speed test while tethering off my phone.
WEird!

Tethering with NFSFAN's ROM's and Bell's Unlimited Mobile Browser

Hi everyone,
What is the story on tethering the HTC Touch with NFSFAN's latest WM6.5 ROM? I heard there was a patch that prevented Bell from realizing it was tethered data usage? Can anyone confirm?

It works just fine, and has for me in every ROM version out there.
Just remember it is called "unlimited mobile browser"......not unlimited data. There is a difference. I use mine when internet is not available and I want to use my laptop instead of the phone to browse XDA, etc. I wouldn't tether and start downloading torrents or songs from limewire etc. That kind of "data" would probably raise a flag. Can you think of any browsing on your phone + gps use (say...google maps) + titanium / m2d weather etc that would use 200mb in an hour????? Probably not, so I use it for browsing, not downloading.
I believe there is a screenshot available on page 1 of NFSFAN's ROM thread.

I was under the impression that there was a “special” way that Bell could tell that you were tethering under the official ROM. I thought there was a “hack” that removed this so that Bell could not tell (except perhaps by shear volume) if you were tethered or not.
How “safe” is it to use it for casual (ie. web browsing, email) internet usage? Am I going to get dinged with a huge bill?
Or, is there no such “special way” that Bell could tell even if I was still using the official ROM?

They can't tell your tethered, it is safe for casual browsing.
I was just warning you about the "sheer volume". You think it would be common sense not to tether and then download movies but you know some people.
I use it once in a blue moon just for browsing, and never was charged any extra, but i use a WDM rom, as long as no one abuses it we should be fine.
Torrents away!
I have pushed over 14 gigs a month on telus using my vogue as a tether, faster than my rogers lite! Have been doing this since Rev A in Sept 08.
Yup, they won't find out if no one goes and uses more than 4 GB in a month (Sprint)

Like others said, it's safe!
I've used multiple NFSFAN ROMs over the past year + on my Bell Touch, and have never run into tether charges. One month I did about 8GB of data tethered to my Acer Aspire One while travelling out of province, and no overage at all.
Just woundering something:
And how exactly do you "tether"?

Connect your phone to your (generally) laptop and wait for a pop up on the phone to ask whether you want to share it's internet connection to the PC.
That's all there is to it, at least with NFSFANs ROM.

Nice! Thanks!
everytime i connect using internet sharing it disconnects seconds later, any ideas or fixes on this
anyone know how to tether with bluetooth os osx 10.5?
i can pair the phone for things like the sailing clicker remote but bluetooth pan wont work and i think ftp stopped working aswell any ideas?
as for using data on there pamphlets they at least used to mention downloading and streaming things like videos, messaging
so i asked at a bell store about the data stuff i could use and i asked about torrenting and showed WMtorrent and they said as long as i followed the abuse policy anything is fine they even noted it on my account
so if torrenting a say 1gb file on the phone is fine and tethering looks as if the data originated on the phone
whats the difference if the torrent was tethered or from the phone its self
currently this month ive used 4.38gb of data and no issues ive done above 6 before though
I use wifirouter to tether with since my internet sharing doesnt seem to want to stay connected for no more than 5 minutes and i play world of warcraft everyday using my vogue for internet and i have used as much as 10 gigs of bandwith and never got charged thru sprint as long as you have the unlimited data on your service plan, which i have the unlimited everything plan with sprint, been doing this for about 3 years now and never once got charged.
I have been tethering the Vogue now for over a year. Streaming, DLing firmwares, upgraded client blackberries, downloaded tunes. Basically done what ever I want. BUT Not often. once or ywice a week.
LOL, as a point though. I do use it for internet radio (resco) for HOURS at a time on device (& up to 9GB/month). so if they ever had an issue, I'd just blame it on that.
Ironically my bill only shows about 10MB of usage!
Im also having trouble like DWC316 my connection shows it is good, but I still cant get any web pages to load Im on sprint and I did have some issues getting my data connection with nfsfans v14 but now it works great on the phone but not on the laptop when I tether...any Ideas?

Sprint Blocking Bittorrent Ports?

I have been beta testing a bittorrent client app on my EVO that runs on Android. I'm able to use the app's built-in search feature to search for torrent files on isoHunt. I can select the file and it will start transferring to my computer, but I've been having a bunch of problems getting it to complete a download.
I installed the 3gtest app and ran a test. It said that both bit torrent uplink traffic and bit torrent downlink traffic were blocked. This was all on 3G. I had 4G turned off. Has anyone else seen this?
I plan to try it on 4G (assuming 3gtest works on 4G), and I was also thinking about trying to transfer a torrent on my PC while wi-fi tethering. I'm running fresh's 0.5.3 ROM, but I doubt there's anything there that's causing a problem. Fresh doesn't run adblocking or anything. Any ideas?

I get the same results while tethering my phone. Shame really...
I dont have any problems... I have been downloading torrents via tether since the 4th.
I can download torrents, but never get past 10kbps while downloading
My speeds go up and down, tops at 150kb/s.
I'll try it later over usb tethering and post my results so we can see if it's regional or nationwide.
You have a link to this bittorrent client? I never have my laptop in a 4G area.

FYI I ran this app on my 4G and on my home WiFi.. both of which can download torrents just fine and it shows them as "Blocked" so I am not sure how accurate it is.

AndTorrent gives me about the same speeds on 3G/4G.
WiFi tops out ~200kb/s.
For those interested, check out BluePlanetapps on twitter. That's the developer and he posts updates there.
My 3gtest says that bittorrents are blocked, but I can actually start a torrent. The speeds vary on 3G, going up to around 150 kb/s, but after a variable number of minutes downloading, it'll stop. I can manually restart it later and it continues to download, and then it will stop again.
It seems like Sprint isn't blocking all bittorrent ports, but that it's detecting the torrent and then blocks it. I dunno. I'll try tethering and 4G over the next couple of days and post my results. Unfortunately, I don't get a great 4G signal at home. If anyone else runs any tests, please post them.
I'm not surprised in the slightest that Sprint is blocking them. Why? Two reasons:
1) Upload bandwith on a limited cell network is, well, limited. It's just like your normal internet node - there's usually lots of download bandwith, but only so much upload to go around. You cap that and you've now screwed everyone else on the node until you're done.
2) Legality issues. 95-99% (some high percentage) of all torrents out there contain some sort of illegal and/or very gray-area items. Sprint is trying to protect their rears for when the MPAA/RIAA mafia look their way.
So yes, I'm not surprised at all. Why you shouldn't be doing it either. For the love of all that's holy, if you must torrent, do it on your own home connection that has a MUCH higher limit on upload bandwith.
Actually, as crazy as it sounds my upload speeds are faster on 3g than on my home connection. Thank you time warner.

Wireless Tether DRASTICALLY SLOW, help please

Hello,
I tried searching for this issue and could not find any help in the topics, though I see some others are having the same issue with out resolution.
My phone via 4g get's about 3-5mbps when I run speedtest on the evo...
I start wireless tether and the fastest speed I can get via my laptop is .7mbps.
I updated my wireless driver to allow maximum power and that has allowed the speed to stay constant and improved the situation a little. ( there was a post somewhere on here, so thank you for that one)
Any ideas/help on how I can get my wireless tether speed to match closer to the 4g speed the phone gets? I am using google's wireless tether pre3 version. I have tried all 3 versions ( from the stable one, pre2 and pre3) all having same issue.
Is a full 2-4mbps loss in speed normal via wireless tether?
I am using rooted stock 1.47 rom and have tried fresh ROM with same results.
Any tips or help is greatly appreciated.
Same here
Hey, thought I would add to the chorus...with a large caveat.
I average about 5-7 down and about 1 up pretty consistently in my home on the phone. But, when I just browse and surf the web via the Android Wifi Tether (2.07) on my phone, I only get around 500k-1meg via Speedtest.net. However, if I look at the stats on my Tether application while I view things like FB, I spike to well over 3 megs at times. AND when I get torrents, I am using my full bandwidth that my phone says I have available to me, with almost nothing lost (as far as I can tell) from the 4g service, through the Wifi, to my computer.
This might not mean too much, and in fact I might never have noticed anything, until I tried to watch HD videos on my Laptops browser connected to my Evo via the Wifi app. It simply will not give me much more than 700 k (you can track what the site (for example, TheDailyShow) sees as "available" to you), even though I know I have more than that available to me at that exact same second (because I tell the torrents that I had been downloading to slow down, and immediately speed back up again after I try to watch HD videos)
It's not the same issue, but I think they are related. Have you tried torrents to see what you actually have available to you? Try something common and legal, so as not to piss anyone off.
I know I have the capacity, and I know my phone can handle it, I just dunno why I can't get that bandwidth that I know I have access to via the Tether application on my Evo all the time that I am browsing.

YouTube freezing during playback

Anyone else have the YouTube app just freeze up during playback?
I think it might be a problem with the way the app is caching the video. It will load up to a certain point and then stop. When playback reaches that point, it won't load anymore. If i try and back out, the app freezes and eventually force closes.
One thing I've noticed though is that this only seems to happen with all the 4.0.3 roms I've tried. When using Android rev. HD there are no problems.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

That did put a smile on my face.
But seriously though, I notice your with Verizon which is cdma, I'm on a gsm phone. I wonder if it could just be a gsm vs. cdma rom issue.
Poor connection. Remember HD videos pulls more data. I get the loading symbol but only when connected to a slow wifi.

I get really slow loading on any connection. Either 3G, which is typically about 1.8 Mbps, or over my wifi, which is through 12 Mbps cable. Doesn't seem to matter how fast the connection is, at least for me. Not sure if it's my ROM or what.
happens to me on stock 4.0.2. Mostly with embedded videos in browsers. Also when attempting to seek via browser or app.
On wifi, 35mbps fios with full strength reading and about 20mbps thru put.
Drives me nuts, coming from iPhones and never had any problem watching vids. Now 90% crash or fail.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I get the same problem too, even after upgrading to one of the 4.0.4 roms. A temporary solution that I've found is that using the 2.4.4 version of YouTube works without any problems. Only downside is that this version isn't as polished as the updated one.
Here's a link I uploaded to the old youtube app if anyone wants it.

WiFi Performance is horrible!?

Will I just received my Note 4. And the WiFi performance is horrible.
Hey @tampaboy good to see you here from the note 2 thread.
Bad news is locked bootloader and as of now no root.
I haven't had any issues with the WIFI yet. Is it just on your home network or are you having issues with a bunch of routers?
How so? You never had a moto x 1st gen. My note 4 keeps a great connection.

WiFi has full connection and Speed Test shows 20mbps download speed but when I download anything from Google Play it downloads at less than 500kbps
I experience similar issues with Google play via WiFi and Uverse Internet connection. I just assumed it was a playstore/Samsung issue as I'm able to download larger files from a server at better speeds.
Just really hope they unlock the boot and gain root on this puppy. Otherwise I could've just bought a iPhone if I wanted all this security locked down crap.
Sad thing is its way easier to jailbreak ios 7 or 8 than the note 4 is to root it at least on AT&T and Verizon.
maybe you just have a crappy internet speed/router, no issue here at all, or maybe just ask for a replacement
Yes the Wifi speed is absolutely terrible. There are tons of threads / other forums have posted this as well. I've tried 2.4 / 5 Ghz N, G, B all crap on various routers. The Note 3 always gets about 2/3rd better speed. At home I have a 30 Mbps connection and the speed always tops out at about 5-8 Mbps. Garbage. Note 3? 27 Mbps!!! what is going on here?
Please don't be an idiot and ask the OP if their router / internet is bad just goes to show how noob you are.

Definitely not my router
you can't rely on an internet speed test...
run an iperf host on a desktop computer then run an iperf client on your phone(s). that will be a much more reliable way of testing wireless speed between your devices.

I have also been experiencing slow downloads from the play store.
funny thing though, galaxy store was wanting me to update my flipboard app, so was google play..
so yesterday I started to update it via google play.. 5 min into it, it wasn't even done downloading yet.. so I canceled it and went to the galaxy store, it was downloaded, installed and ready for use in 2 minutes max.
I wonder if its not on their (googles) side somewhere..
Yeah its weird everything else downloads real quick like normal besides from Google Play Store. The Google Play Store downloads normally if I use my data, only really slow over any WiFi network.
I wonder if it's something that AT&T put in the phone so you turn on Download Booster and use your data with WiFi?
Except download booster is "hidden" on the n910a version of the note 4. You have to find the settings through nova and widgets.
Sorry to hear your still having the problem. I haven't seen any slowdown over wifi yet.
I've also noticed WiFi on this is horrible that's forever for pages to load or even time out when on apps. But downloading is fast. My s4 doesn't have any issues not sure if it's hardware issue or software but it's annoying.
