Coming from HW QWERTY... - HTC One X

Phone arrives tomorrow. I am eager to love it but anxious about the lack of a hardware QWERTY. My Droid 3 was unbeatable, could manage laptop speeds of typing on it and I wouldn't be onto the One had I not broken it despite its Motorola locked down badness and GB!
What do you recommend I do to make typing the best experience possible - I havent used any OSK's for ages really. Swiftkey I've seen a lot of good things about?
Finally, landscape or portrait typing? OH! And haptic feedback or not?
Cheers.

Swiftkey is good, also try ICS Keyboard (market version of the stock ICS keyboard which is great), and Swype if you like the swipey-style typing.
Swype is best for swiping, SwiftKey is best for predictions and ICS keyboard is best for aesthetics/pure typing, IMO. Personal preference, really.

if you didn't know, people actually type much quicker using on-screen keypad technology than on a qwerty keyboard

True.

Do they? I chose the X over the S because of the larger screen to help me, I hope this is the case.
I couldn't do it on my Milestone, G1, Droid 3 or my Dads iPhone.
From what my mates say, they say they get used to it but I'll watch them type and they'll be very innaccurate, and pretty slow.
All noticed from iPhone users by the way... The prediction is awful on there and I can't recall seeing any suggestions above the keyboard.
Thanks guys. I guess I'll wait and see what its like tomorrow!!

Really?
That makes no sense to me, I can type much faster on a hardware keyboard.
It is true that the world speed record is held by a software keyboard but that was using swype which isn't really typing.
Back to the original question; You'll miss your HW keyboard, but you'll get used to a software one pretty quickly. It's a shame they don't make many top-end phones with them any more (my 3 year old T-Mobile G1 still has the best keyboard I've ever used! )

The droid 3 is unbelievable. I broke the effer so Im back onto my G1, and its hellish after being on a dual core with big screen and battery... im limited to good old fashioned texts really... and the KB is worn out. What a phone that was...
Im hoping the Droid 5 (if there ever is one) is one of these new Nexus devices that are being touted.
Slim quad core and QWERTY. Yes please.
Until then I'm sure the X will suffice

no they were not, they were using an iphone's on screen keyboard and you type so much faster since you don't have to actually press down on the keys..on screen keyboard you need only graze the letter and it shows up on the screen..i'm not the only one saying this, but 100+ ppl..

G2 or HD2?

Ok, so I've been talking to TONS of people about which phone I should upgrade to. My HD2 friends are vouching for the HD2, but the G2 people say that the HD2's battery life is **** (this was pre-Nand). Which of the 2 phones do you think I should look into upgrading to?
I'm hoping to have a phone that has a big developer base so the phone is always supported (unlike the Mytouch Slide, which was supported for 2 months until the G2 came out.)
Sent from a phone that's better than yo Momma's. bbq.
well you're posting in the G2 forum so I bet most people are gonna say G2 (hopefully)
and cyanogen owns a G2 himself, so the phone should be heavily supported for a good while...
I personally went with the G2 and am lovin it
I have both.
Why do I have both? Because the G2 really attracted me as it reminded me of my old TP2.
Would I buy it again? No.
The keyboard is stiff.
The screen is small.
The CPU is unimpressive.
I get less battery life with it, than my HD2 with Android.
The hinge is just stupid.
The flash is weak.
The camera seems lower quality in side by side comparisons.
Go with the HD2.

Ok, see, this is helpful. The HD2 has 720p right? Isn't that better than the G2's camera already? Also, do you think that the HD2 will be as supported as it is now in 10 months?

Actually, I haven't updated my Froyo build in awhile, so I don't know if the 720p is working yet or not for video recording. I do know the sound is a bit better on the video with the HD2, but I never compared the video quality between the two.
When I mentioned the camera, I meant still shots. I've been able to do some HDR shots even with the HD2.
Another thing, I am getting about 5-7mw of drain on an SD card build, and I hear the NAND builds are down to 2-3mw of drain. With my normal battery, a day of medium to heavy use isn't a problem. However, I also have the HTC extended battery and go about 2 days without a charge with no issue
I don't know if they will make an extended battery for the G2, but the way the battery door is made, it would be hard to do.
That's another thing, I don't like the MicroSD being in a weird little "cage" under the battery. So much for swapping in cards while the phone is on.
One thing I forgot...
The screen size on the HD2 will completely spoil you to the point that no smaller screen will ever "do" for you. Be it just reading on the screen, or typing on it with two thumbs in landscape. It's just perfect.

The color is nothing like an AMOLED screen, but it is brighter and crisper than most other LCD's out there.
It's the same screen the EVO and the Desire HD have, and both of those get pretty high praise
It certainly is higher brightness and color than the one they put on it's retarded twin brother the HD7
Glad I could be of some help. The G2 certainly does get higher bandwidth speeds in the "4G" areas, but I've never felt the HD2 was "slow" on the network either.
Plus another annoyance? The trackpad on the G2 randomly "wakes up" and moves when I'm typing. I'd rather that space was used for screen.

The only things that really attracted me to the G2 were the hardware keyboard and the 4G network. But I live like an hour away from Los Angeles, so I doubt that I'll be getting any 4G coverage anytime soon. I'm guessing by 2012.
Also, I've been hearing some wonky things about the trackpad on the G2, apparently there's a proximity sensor inside that responds to shadows and movement.

The keyboard isn't worth it.
I came from the Motorola Q9h, to the Tilt, to the Touch Pro, to the Touch Pro 2... So I was a diehard keyboard man... Then I owned the HD2 since release day.
Now after owning the G2 for a few months? I honestly can say, that as long as I have my HD2, I won't be wanting a physical keyboard.
The 4G honestly is the only reason I could see getting the phone, so since that isn't an issue for you, head on over to the HD2 section and find whatever ROM suits your fancy the most

I went from a ****ty Nokia flip phone to a BB to another BB to the Mytouch3G to the MTSlide. I regretted ever going over to the MyTouch3G because the soft keyboard was laggy as hell (even when I used Swype). I guess that I'm just overly cautious about having yet another laggy phone.
Also, I've been lurking in the HD2 dev forum for a while now. I've just been to afraid to post anything. Lol.

If you like the HD2, then surely the Desire HD is the more obvious upgrade option ? Big screen like the HD2, and a much faster processor than the HD2 (newer generation, don't just compare the clock speeds !).
Personally I love the Vision's hardware keyboard, because I don't lose a big chunk of my screen to an on-screen keyboard. But we all like different things, and it would be a very boring world if every single one of us liked the same phone best !

Much faster? It's not even a full revision different than the original Snapdragon. I haven't seen that it is "much" faster in anything. A bit faster? Yep.
Worth the doubling in price to get? Hardly.
Not to mention, it sounds like the OP is using the T-Mobile network, the DHD won't have 3G on that.

Yes, but the second gen snapdragons eat the competition. It'd be safe to say the G2 is one of the best options if your into the hardware
I just put my HD2 aside for a G2. Suffice to say the HD2 is getting alot of shelf time now The ironic thing is I got tired of waiting for NAND-flashable Android builds for the HD2 and running it off a slow SD card and so the day after I paid full retail for my G2 - I see Cotulla and crew have released MAGLDR(sp?). ROFL
I flashed an MDJ Gingerbread NAND build, ran it on the HD2 for about an hour, then pulled the SIM and put it back in my G2. It's hard to explain, the HD2 is phenomenal but the G2 is an actual Android device so it just feels more comfortable to me running Android builds

This is the exact reason I switched from my HD2 to a G2. As well as being able to have a physical keyboard that did not take up half of the screen.
I am not a huge fan of Windows mobile and although there are different builds and roms for the HD2, none of them made me happy. I love Android and having an actual keyboard, so the best option for me was the G2.
Plus my HD2 lagged a lot.
Had an HD2 before the G2, dont regret ever selling it, I am happier with the G2 then I ever was with the HD2.

Are you currently using T-Mobile with your HD2? I have a HD2 and a G2, my dad is using the HD2 and loves it since its a big screen and all. The only problem he says he's having is that the reception is worse since I put Android on it. Do you have any similar problem? Or did I do something wrong when I put Android up on it?

Swype keyboard inaccurate

Stock keyboard using swype is pretty inaccurate. I am coming from the captivate (S1). on that phone it was able to memorize any word i swyped that wasnt in the dictionary.
what is the difference with the S3 because is is wildly inaccurate and has no features, no memory?
i dont think the s3 comes with real swype like the captivate. Probably samsung trying to save some $$ I'm also coming from the captivate and wish it had real swype.
That isn't Swype, it's Samsung's keyboard. You can either install Swype yourself, or try something like Swiftkey. Swiftkey 3 just came out, and so far it's the best keyboard I've used.
I recommend SwiftKey, best keyboard imo
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda premium
The swipe typing that comes with the samsung keyboard is Nuance's t9 Trace, not Nuance's Swype. Which is silly because Nuance now owns both the products and I'm pretty sure they are aware Swype is the better product. I'm sure it had something to do with legal intricacies not allowing Swype to make it in the phone quite yet.
Swiftkey X is nice.
But, I installed the latest Swype Beta 4, and its accuracy is phenomenal. I'm sold.

If owning Siftkey X, will it auto update to Swiftkey 3? Or is it a different product to purchase? I'm curious, because my wife is on Swiftkey X.

I own Swiftkey X through Amazon, and it lists as Swiftkey 3 in my apps list with them now. I haven't actually tried the new version yet. I used Swiftkey X on my Captivate for a while, but ended up returning to Swype after a couple weeks. Currently using Swype with my S3.
I got Swiftkey X during the 10 cent sale through Google, and yes, it auto-updated to 3. I actually hated Swiftkey X, and preferred using the AOSP Android ICS keyboard. Once that was unavailable on this phone, I tried Swiftkey 3 and liked it a lot better than Samsung's crap. Honestly, I'd rather have the AOSP back over anything else right now.

Same here. I tried to get along with the new Samsung keyboard but after 2 days finally broke down and installed the newest Swype beta. It is a really great keyboard if you are already a swype user. I use Swiftkey on my tablet and I like it too but for one handed phone typing in portrait mode which is 95% of my daily typing style nothing compares to Swype IMHO.

I actually like both, Swype beta and Swiftkey. I usually switch between them. If I feel like pecking and making sure what I am typing is accurate, like for email responses for work then I will use Swift, but for texting back and forth to friends or responding in forums, it is Swype. I can't stand the kb that comes with the phone stock, I really hate the fact that when I go back to correct a word, it doesn't have the word suggestions like Swype does, only when you're in the middle of typing.

This is my biggest gripe with the stock keyboard too. I also like that Swype allows me to turn auto correct off while still getting the word suggestions. I hate when I manually type a word and find after I send my message that it got changed to something else. I'm using Swype beta now and so far it's great.

[Q] Keyboard sugestions! plus other minor questions.

Hello!
I'm moving up to this phone very soon, and had one big question about how well the built-in onscreen keyboard functions.
A bit of history:
Every Android phone I've ever owned that i considered my main device has had a physical keyboard. When my Samsung Epic broke about a month ago, I had a couple of spares to work with as a backup, so I was able to experiement with the HTC EVO and Motorola Photon. A very new concept to me, using an onscreen keyboard. I forever hated it, but after using the EVO for a month, I got incredibly used to it.
For my experience: I can't stand the EVO keyboard. I much prefer the one on the photon, or even the default AOSP one.
How is the keyboard that comes bundled on the optimus G? Does the screen size have any effect on how different typing with the keyboard would be compared to a phone such as the EVO, almost a whole inch smaller? How is the Haptic feedback? That's actually a pretty big thing that would start to bother me on my Epic, whenever I had opened the on screen keyboard for a quick password or such. (My epic had little to no haptic feedback, I suspect the vibrate motor was shot.) Having good haptic feedback on a keypress is as close I'll get to the tactile response of such from a physical keyboard.
I still intend on picking this phone up, regardless if they keyboard turns out to be lackluster, but if that's the case, maybe a third party keyboard could fill the gap.
How about third party keyboards? There's a lot of them out there, and I have no idea where to start.
Sorry if this is the wrong thread. I contemplated posting this under apps because of the last bit, but stuck it here as it has to do with the typing functionality.
Thanks!
Hi! The last phone I owned with a physical keyboard was the palm pre. I was the same as u thinking it would be difficult getting adjusted to soft key. IMO, the 4.7in screen is the sweet spot for typing. You'll get used to it pretty quick. I suggest getting swiftkey app, because of the word prediction feature. And as far as typing, it's extremely responsive! More so than my Galaxy S2. On my S2, it couldn't really handle the wpm i was typing. It would lag! This lgog can keep up! Oh ya, and the hepatic feedback is also top notch. No lag either.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using xda premium
The stock keyboard isn't bad at all. I actually like it better than a lot of the onscreen keyboards on other phones. It's very clean, attractive, and functional. I actually just switched back to it to type this, and it works great! And I totally agree, 4.7 inch screen is a great size for keyboards.
My personal preference is Swiftkey. I have tried and own almost all of the major keyboards that you'll find in the app store. None of them really compare to Swiftkey, so if you're thinking of trying one out, then start with Swiftkey.
Thanks for the responses! I'll definitely give SwiftKey a try. It's good to know that the stock keyboard has some positive feedback as well.
I prefer the stock JB keyboard on my nexus7. Is there a way to turn off the LG keyboard and use the JB version? I tried to un check it under settings but it seems to be locked ON.

[q] samsung captivate glide ii?

Hey I need to post something here in order to provide feedback the developers section.. so I was just wondering if anybody have heard of high end captivate glide.. or maybe just another qwerty phone but with high end specs.. cause I love my glide but I'm starting to feel it laggy..
anyone?
Never heard of a Glide 2, and not even a new QWERTY slider. Photon Q and Relay 4G are by far the best QWERTYs on market and judging from how manufacturers are evading the thickness and (relatively) small package of QWERTY sliders, they may never release better ones...
I just don't get it: why can't there be a 5 inch slider? That won't be thick at all and will have super big and comfy keys...
Sent from Samsung Captivate Glide @ CM10.1.2
oh cool dind't know bout them..
the relay 4g seems faster.. but worse camera.. and still 4" display.. not much of an upgrade i think..
and the motorola one has better specs.. and 4.3".. but on screen home and back buttons take away some space.. and it looks ugly.. damn..
when I bought the glide it looked so sexy.. oh also looks like a non removal sim card so no unlocked version..
5 inches should be perfect.. are we really so few qwrty users? when are they going to understand that we humans neeed tactil feedback when typing
There really aren't very few of us, but most manufacturers see the keyboard as a gimmick. Most people don't care about it, but if folks who WANT QWERTY keyboards are still buying other phones, they're fine. I think probably 20% of the Android market (which is a lot!) care about having a QWERTY slider -- but of those people, 90% of them will buy a non-slider phone if necessary.
That being said, I think the next "evolution" of QWERTY's will be phone manufacturer's building bluetooth keyboard cases. I spoke with a few rep's for Motorola, and they said they would consider building a bluetooth keyboard case for the X-Phone if there was enough interest. Want a keyboard? Tell Motorola their original Droid line rocked -- and that we want a bluetooth keyboard case for the X Phone. Chances are, they're going to keep the same "phone" size/shape going forward for next year's X Phone's, so I can see us buying a "keyboard case" once for them and using it for several iterations.
I've contemplated the same thing -- could I just physically build a keyboard or 3D model a keyboard case that could be used on a standard bluetooth keyboard, and allow a user to 3D print (or pay me to 3D print) the enclosure/case for their phone? It'd be a lucrative business, no doubt, for someone to come up with a "standard" keyboard for Android devices and then allow folks to use that keyboard with different phones by providing different cases that would fit the phone + keyboard.
Per the Relay 4G. The camera sensor is supposedly better, but it doesn't have the same resolution depth... but I rarely go over 2 megapixels anyway. It also has a 5-row keyboard, from what I can remember and the processor is a bit faster (about 50%, I believe). The Captivate Glide is analogous to a Samsung Galaxy S 2.3 or so -- it's weird and kind of in between a 2 and 3. The Relay 4G is very firmly a Galay S 3. Better battery life as well, due to it being a Snapdragon processor.
I will probably be purchasing a Relay 4G in a few months so that I can switch to T-Mobile. I'd like to keep my Captivate Glide, because I have a feeling next year, we'll see some better QWERTY phones. Will they be GSM -- that is the question.
interesting..
i came up with conclusions too soon..
the relay seems great now that i give it a deeper look..
those shortcuts for sms or composing email in the seems awesome
50% faster processor.. nice..
i think the glide looks so much better but maybe it's time for an upgrade
Jolla will be next for me...

Relay 4G and Photon Q has the same CPU and RAM size, so equally fast. I see Relay's S3-esque design as obsolete, and PQ's backlit, huge keyboard is a big plus. Add in my preference for onscreen keys, I think PQ is vastly superior to Relay, with the mere obstacle being the price. For now I can snatch a like-new PQ for as high as ~$180, while Relay 4G was once available for ~$110, but sadly no one sells them now, which was why I purchased a Cappy Glide (~$90 is all I can afford)
Also, there is the xt897 variant for GSM and xt897c variant for CDMA. Both these variants and the Relay receives official CM10.2 nightlies. Fsck Samsung for not treating Glide as a Galaxy S2 family (Exynos42xx) device and using Tegra 2 instead.

You do think Jolla can last longer than an N9?

more qwertys
I read somewhere about an apple's patent on multitouch screens or on screen keyboards or something like that.. and the article concluded that it's probable that other manufactures than apple would have to come up with another typing experience.. and qwerty keyboards would probably be the future for android based phones.. does anybody know or have read anything deeper about this matter?

G3 letdown?

Coming from the note 3 I'd say overall this phone is better, but there's some problems with the software. At least that's what I'm guessing. When I switch to app alternatives it runs great.
For instance the keyboard feels ungodly awful. Spacebar recognizes only half my taps, and the auto correct feels poorly utilized. I have to manually select dictionary suggestions. Going to SwiftKey and there's no problems. I'd love to actually test the g3 keyboard features but It's almost unusable.
Window transitions also seem to lag a bit and I see redraws. But I also notice it sometimes too navigating settings menu.
So what do you guys think, how's the software? Should I simply flash another rom ?

Honestly the only thing I agree with you on is the keyboard but I upgraded from a gs3.
I love the phone so far. I switched from the S5. This phone feels allot like the s5 but it runs better in my opinion. I have a problem plugging things in the headphone jack. Sometimes the phone recognizes it and sometimes it doesn't.

Not sure why people post this, if you don't like it take it back. Problem solved..
The keyboard turns off auto correct out of box but leaves suggestions. When typing the two word on the left and right are suggested spellings if they are misspelled and you just swipe up on the left or right side to auto fix the word.
Coming from the note 3 I don't agree your phone is faulty keyboard is far better than the note 3. Go to your keyword setting and look around I will suggest. Only agree with window transition but it's far less laggier than the note 3
I say it's OK because I will install Google Cantonese Keyboard anyway (unfortunately, Samsung keyboards does not support ChangJei - one of the reasons I drop Samsung phones).
I came from a Note 3 as well. On it I miss the AMOLED, USB 3.0, and the S-Pen. On the G3i like the smaller form factor while keeping the larger screen and the resolution. The G3 does have some bugs I don't like though, such as my keyboard would keep reverting to the LG one until I froze it. I don't think either is better, just slightly different.
Tbh I think the lg keyboard is the worst I've ever used. I uninstalled it and I'm on the android l keyboard now
There was an update today for the keyboard.. Seems to make it much smoother and word suggestions appear as you swype and not after.. Looks to be big improvements. Also added emoji's into word suggestions . Give it a try!
I am trying this keyboard instead of using Google's and it seems to be okay.

I agree. I absolutely love the keyboard once I went into settings and set things the way I wanted them.

I heard about that issue and LG is denying that its a hardware issue.. I think it may be a software bug but who knows i havent had the problem so i wouldnt know but try going back to your tmobile store if that is where you got it from if not then... you're screwed :silly:
I don't focus on stock things like keyboards which can be easily swapped for something else. I'm used to the Google Keyboard and just use it with any device, problem solved.
Personally I like my devices as close to stock Android, and with Root + Xposed you can pretty much get there. The only thing I really use that's LG's is the camera app, and it's quite good. People complain about the camera app too -- well guess what, you can load other cameras too - either the stock Google Camera or FV-5, A Better Camera, etc.
I'm coming from an HTC M8. I loved the M8 but I dropped it in a pool and TMobile gave me the option of either getting a refurb replacement via the insurance I pay for or getting a different phone. As much as I loved the M8, I took a new phone. Mostly because I wanted a larger screen again, but other than the size of the screen and maybe the camera (camera isn't a real big issue though) I loved the M8.
I will agree that I don't like the stock keyboard. But being on Android, we can change that. I've put my trusted and true Swype on and i'm back in business.
I've seen people complain about lag in the UI and there is a non root fix for that using a service phone number and changing a setting. I did notice a pinch of that lag and applied the change and it seems to have cleared up. http://www.droidviews.com/how-to-fix-lag-on-lg-g3-without-root/ if anyone is interested.
The 4K screen is more than a phone needs but isn't the reason why I chose the phone. Its pretty, plenty bright for me and yes, I was using it outside during the day and it was bring and clear enough for me. The battery is good too. I notice that when the screen is on, the battery is faster ( /duh) but when the screen is off, the battery practically doesn't go down. I have a 10,000MaH battery to recharge my devices on the go so if I it dies I can use that or guy a 2nd battery to swap. But I have an office IT job so I am never far away from a plug.
I am quite impressed with the camera though. I will always use my DSLR for important shots but this phone has a good camera and the autofocus is stupid fast.
I'm quite happy with the G3 and won't be taking it anywhere near a pool. I've had at least 7 smart phones and the M8 was the first I broke. Cost me $175 for my clumsiness.

I'll be damned...these changed settings did kill the lag issue on mine..it took a few seconds after the second boot, maybe 15-20, but suddenly it was like I was running Nova or Apex with 0 Animations. Good catch, thanks, and welcome to G3! Cheers!
Why do people miss samoled screens? Sorry but that black can suck it with the dark banding while scrolling crap. The absolute best keyboard is the Xperia one hands down. It literally took the best features from each keyboard and packed it into one. Just wish they had a theme option besides the only 3 stock ones.
I should be getting a G3 next month and can't wait. Size wise it's a downgrade from a Z Ultra but I'll be keeping it around as a tablet so to speak.
The keyboard out of the box is terrible.
However, after customizing it to my liking, it's honestly one of the better keyboards I've ever used. The update happened a day or two after I bought it as well, so perhaps that had something to do with it.
I came from the Note 3 as well, and I couldn't stand the keyboard on that (though I liked the device overall).
