Hello,
I have been wanting to replace my bricked Galaxy S with one of the below smartphones:
- T-Mobile G2
- Nexus One
- HTC Leo/HD2
- Nexus S
The requirements for my selection include:
- The ability to function under the AWS 1700/2100 frequency
- The ability to utilize MicroSD storage (Nexus S fails in this category)
- Have a reasonably good/congenial screen size and resolution
- Have a variety of custom ROMs and modifications
- The ability to use LED notifications
- Have a good build and be considerably capable, perdurable and dependable in terms of both hardware and software (unrelenting to software defects such as bricking, and hardware flaws).
I would be very grateful if you, the owners of the G2, would kindly reflect upon your overall experiences with your device and inform me of the phones pros and cons. I would also be thankfully open to any recommendations regarding my selection.
Thank you very much.
Okay bro i have both G2 and a Nexus S... I like both phones but in my own opinion i think the nexus S is kinda better. I love Pure stock android
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA Premium App
Pros:
Great keyboard
Can use the LED (only if rooted...unless there an app for that)
Cons:
The loose hinge
Screen wobbles due to the screen
The back cover can start peeling its silver metal finish
The matte finish all around the phone can change color over time. (fixable with a case/ i prefer a clear case to show off its sexiness while still being protected)
Using a case causes the matte finish to chip off very tiny pieces. -___-
I kinda want a mytouch4g. I'm not a keyboard user...
You should wait because Galaxy SII, hTc Pyramid, and other great devices are coming out. I suggest you wait a little longer
I don't find the necessity to buy a dual-core phone. I am buying these phones because of their great development also, something that the Galaxy S line lacks.
I personally love HTC Sense UI also, therefore leaning my decision towards buying HTC branded phones. I also want the phones to be reasonably priced (under 450 or so), unlike the new dual cores which may cost more than 600$.

The only reason I got a G2 is because it was free on tmobile.com last month..
Pros:
fast for 800mhz
Keyboard is great (3 quick keys come in handy)
@ and www./.com key is great
Decent size screen
Camera qual is good
4G network
Easily rooted and good custom roms
Hinge isn't as bad as people make it out to be
Froyo is cool for stock
Cons:
Preloaded google apps suck (root to remove)
Battery life (stock)
Network Card isn't that great for 4g service
4rows on keyboard rather than 5 (non dedicated numbers)
Micro-USB port isn't in the best spot
MicroSD slot under battery is annoying
Camera hardward button is a tad laggy
LED is only white (track pad)
Track pad isn't the greatest
Screen wobble is easily fixed by keeping the sides of ur index fingers placed on
the screen edges.
No sense but romable!
The hidden memory lmao
Id recommend moving away from tmobile altogether.
The evo shift is better than this on sprint. Or get a dual core phone
It looks like I have no other option but to go for the HD2. I want to use the phones on Mobilicity/Wind's AWS frequency here in Canada, with their cheap unlimited plans costing a maximum of 45$. Therefore, because the Nexus S has no Ext. SD slot and both Nexus' are equally expensive when bought without a contract, i will have to opt for either the HD2 or the G2; which in this case melodicjunkie's review of the G2 deprecates the device.
The fact that the HD2 is versatile and can run WP7 and Android (Sense, Cyanogen, Gingerbread, Honeycomb) makes it a more worthy selection. However there is some quality of the G2 which still attracts me to it.
I'd go for the Desire HD if it would run on AWS frequency, however I must sigh because it does not.
The G2 is a newer phone than the HD2, so it runs a lot better, especially since it runs Android natively, which the HD2 just really can't compete in terms of actual performance. I have both phones right now, so I speak from experience.
HD2 Pros:
Screen size is sexy, but can be too big for some people at 4.3"
Can run WinMo, WP7, Android, Meego, Ubuntu. Lots of variety.
Lots of development going on, but only a handful for each OS are quality in my opinion.
Cons:
No trackpad/trackball
Older processor
Android is not as smooth as on the G2
No hardware camera button
Boot times are ridiculously long compared to the G2
G2 Pros:
Nearly stock Android 2.2
Newer processor runs faster at 800Mhz than HD2 at 1Ghz
Rooted, the phone can be OC'd ridiculous amounts
Clockspeed for clockspeed, G2 always beats HD2 on all benchmarks
Physical keyboard is one the best I've ever used
Trackpad does its job
Camera button
Not as much dev work as the HD2, but it's growing and it is quality work
CM support. Nuff said.
Cons:
Cannot charge with the phone off. Always goes into recovery. It's annoying.
Trackpad gets a bit wonky under direct incandescent light
Google bloatware, though some of it I do actually use
Hinge is loose, but it doesn't bother me and the screen doesn't wiggle on mine
Not very many LED colors to choose from, even when rooted
Wish it were a 5 row keyboard like the G1
Battery life kinda sucks stock, but rooted, it is greatly improved
Wish the screen were 4", but it is okay where it is
Overall, I began using the G2 daily once I got it and rooted it with CM. Haven't looked back since. The G2 outperforms the HD2 on all aspects for me. It just seems to have a more premium feeling to it because of the extra metal accents on the front of the phone. It feels more solid and seems like it can take more abuse than the HD2 due to a smaller screen size.
Hope this helps
The HD2 is outdated and slow.. lol @tazz9690 = if the hd2 boot time is slower than that's sad because the G2 boot time (non rooted) is sloowww lol.
As for recovery charge, that's only when rooted but yes that is annoying.
The G2 is perfectly fine for 100dollars contract.. the highest id pay for this phone (contract or not) is
150 USD. Maybe 200 if I didn't already know how to root and it were rooted. For 0 dollars with contract it was literally a steal, but let's just say if the Evo shift was the same deal ida got that instantly.
Don't get the slow HD2.
If you want tmobile that bad get the mytouch 4 for the front cam.. no keyboard but so what?
Or you can wait for the sidekick 4g (sarcasm) although 1ghz sidekick! Lmao
I actually had the HD2. I currently have the G2 and the Nexus One.
I'd advise against the HD2. I'm currently running the Nexus One with Miui which will partition the sdcard on it own to allow more apps. The first time I used the Nexus One with CM7 I realized that not all my apps from the G2 were gonna fit the Nexus One. The N1 has a very low internal memory as appose to the G2. Again, Miui roms auto partition your sdcard to allow more apps to fix without the hassle of moving them over manually. You can manually partition the sdcard to allow more apps on CM7.
I really like the Nexus One (just bought it). I'm currently using the N1, and what I really like about it is that mostly all types of roms, sense, stock android, CM7, and Miui work flawless.
Keyboard on the G2 is awesome. You can't go wrong with a G2 or an N1.
I never used the N1. I wanted it when it came out but never got it. The N1 is very stable and sleek as for what I've seen and for what I've been told.
Id go with the G2 over the N1. The g2 had a baby and N1 was born.. or the N1 is the younger brother.. either direction you wanna go, get the G2 over the N1.
I'm still saying wait for a dualcore Tmobile..
The phone I really want is the Incredible S

Not a big fan of the keyboard layout of the shift, otherwise I would get it. Can't change that about the phone though.

Even though the N1 came before the G2, so it would literally be impossible for that outcome to be possible. It's more like, the N1 had a son and it turned out to be Chuck Norris. Major upgrade XD
Get a MyTouch4G. Fast processor, 768MB RAM, FFC, lots of development, easy to root. Looks better in real life and feels great in the hand. The black one has soft touch rubber around the sides while the others are just plastic so go for black. You wont regret it, definitely an underrated phone.
It is essentially the DesireHD with a smaller screen (3.8" but still the same resolution).
It meets all your criteria. I think you will be pleased.

I was saying in terms of specs/size? The n1 was a trackball (old gen), no keyboard..
The n1 is a mega mytouch 3g.
Get a mytouch 4 black.

I'm thinking this would be a great choice for you. I picked G2 over it because of the keyboard, but either phone is a great choice. MT4G has a little bit better specs though, since it has more ram and it's CPU is clocked 200mhz higher at stock (that's easily fixed if you root either phone). I'm more than happy with the G2; every phone has it's quirks, and that's why there are so many on the market. IMO this is the best phone on the market with a keyboard, although I haven't tried the Evo Shift yet (same internal hardware as G2/DZ though).
If my G1 were still functional, I'd be using it today even though I would've been due for an upgrade in October..

Of these choices the G2 is what I'd pick but as others have suggested I'd actually recommend the MyTouch 4G.
The G2 keyboard is not that good (compared to the G1 anyways) and thanks to Swype I rarely use it. Since the MT4G doesn't have a keyboard you have more case options.
MT4G is faster
MT4G has physical buttons for home, back & menu unlike the lame soft-keys found on the G2 and most other phones today.
Both have decent custom ROM support
I kindly thank all of you whom have posted and guided my decision-making towards buying the most worthy mobile smartphone out of my criteria.
Again, thank you

I had a premonition I was going to be asked this question. hah!
I am simply going to wait for the HTC Pyramid or for the Incredible S to decrease in price, then I will make me selection. It feels slightly awkward to purchase a N1 or an HD2 as it would feel somewhat like a downgrade from my previous powerhouse phone, the Galaxy S.
Although I must say that I find it extremely difficult and frustrating to wait for the later smartphone releases (Incredible S, Pyramid). Therefore I am truly lost as to whether I should buy an HTC phone compatible with AWS now, or whether I should wait for future dual-core HTCs.

Look, if you have a phone now: what's the rush? Who knows what kind of bugs these new phones will have. Id rather risk buying a release date kick ass phone, than to buy outdated hardware. Even the sidekick 4g is better than the hd2.. and the sidekick 4g is a freaking joke!
get the pyramid.. I'm getting it to replace the g2, that must tell u sumtin...
Cmon, 8mp cam, front facing one as well.. stocked 1.2 ghz (I do that rooted on g2), you can. only imagine the rooting capabilites on the pyramid.. 2.3ghz overclock?? Maybe, because of the dual core processor and ram..
And to top it off, a phone like that seems odd to have a physical keyboard, which looks sick! The sleak design is amazing, especially the back.
I know we all love our cappy's (well most of us) however i was starting to get a little bored with mine and was debating on getting a new android phone - something with a faster processor / flash / better camera / + more features but with the things i love about the captivate so i was thinking of jumping over to the SGII or Atrix 2...while digging around i found the Samsung Captivate Slide !!!.. I love the whole slide out keyboard and all of the specs so i think im going to wait out to get this phone now kind of excited =] !!
Here's a link i found already announced by Samsung so hopefully they give out a release date....Besides that would anybody have any other recommendations for a phone i should get since my intrest in the cappy is dying out ???

Plus the slide its already running gingerbread ! atnt is finally starting to kick up their android game
LOL link saysCaptivate GLIDE G S same crap different letter
i927... comes with gingerbread 2.3 hmmm wonder if it will be portable to i897 ? it would probably get ICS eventually...
DAMN IT... what have i just said?? ive become one of..... THEM!
I dunno, I see no similarity between this and the original Captivate. All the great things about the captivate aren't in this device. For instance, the captivate was the nicest style of all the original Galaxy S phones, with the metal plating back and original styling.
Its nice that it has the keyboard, although it looks like a relatively unoriginal phone otherwise. I wonder if it comes with the bad GPS like our original captivates.
I'm looking to replace my captivate because the bad GPS and bad camera (I have one of the original captivates with serious issues..haha), but I personally am more interested in the SGS II or the new Galaxy Nexus if it comes out on AT&T.

Looks like it is running a Tegra, makes porting a bit difficult.
how long until your iphone friends are referring to your phone as the "camel toe slide"
the GSIII and Note both look outstanding as far as a standalone device.
The most interesting concept i have seen is a hybrid phone the converts to the tablet that Asus will be releasing:

SKIP TO THE BOTTOM FOR THE QUESTION
I really like the idea of the Galaxy Nexus.
I'm a former Nexus One user, I still have it in the box it came in with the Desktop dock and Car dock too. I'm holding on to it for ever!!!
I passed on the Nexus S because I didn't want a Samsung Phone. I love the way HTC makes their phones. I bought into the hype about their phones feeling "cheap" and "plasticy".
I decided to replace my N1 with a Sensation which has been a pretty big disappointment.
When the GN was announced I decided to swallow my dislike for Samsung's phones and go for it. After reading about the specs it seemed like a decent phone, Nothing groundbreaking just decent maybe even a little sub par when compared to some of the top of the line phones. The only really stand out things about it are the software, which most of the top tier phones will be getting upgraded to at some point.
NFC? It's cool but I can't see using it that much. I think I've run into one other person that was using a Nexus phone and I didn't care to swap info with them. I'd probably pay for stuff with it but I still have to carry a wallet so it's not going to replace my debit card.
Camera? 5mp that's less than 8mp seems like a pretty big step down from what every "top tier" phone out there. Hopefully the low light performance will be really good but somehow I'm expecting disappointment.
Big Screen? I love it big, but then I read about the Galaxy Note.
Pure Google? I've been there with everything up to Gingerbread and I have to say it was barren. I'm on sense now and I've tried (a few times) giving it up to use ADW to get that stock launcher experience I didn't last long. Compared to Sense 3 (I think) Gingerbread is VERY ugly and misses out on a lot of niceties that I've grown accustomed to in Sense.
At least it'll probably get updates first.
It seems like every time I turn around some company is releasing a phone that bests the GN in every way, SGSII, RAZOR and today I read freaking LG has got a phone with a killer display more pixels or something like that.
With that in mind how do you keep your excitement up about this phone?
when it comes to phones, its the software that makes the device, not the hardware......with a Nexus device you will always be on the latest and greatest, nothing is more frustrating to me than to be behind 1 or 2 software releases
Megapixels in cameras are not everything.
The support on Nexus phones is unparalleled. Samsung make good phones. I would get over the plastic hate and get the Nexus. You are on the Nexus forum so you clearly want us to talk you into it
That used to be the case. However with the announcement of ICS and the subsequent announcement from HTC, Samsung and others that ICS would be coming to their later phones it seems like the update argument may not be as valid as it used to be.
Even though I don't see that much use it NFC. Going forward, I won't consider a phone without it.

I'm totally here to be talked into it .
I will totally admit to unfairly jumping on the "Samsung makes cheap feeling phones" bandwagon. HTC phones have weight, Samsung phones are light.
Yes Megapixels aren't everything but they do count for something.

Of course they're getting updated, but they'll be updated 3+ months after the Galaxy Nexus comes out.
That Samsung build quality stigma is FUD. Is all plastic, but my nexus s is the most solid feeling phone I've had. Light and rigid. I've dropped it on tile and wood floor and keep it in my pocket with no protection except that it's by itself. It still looks mint with zero screen scratches since March.
Don't buy into the megapixel myth. The sensor quality and optics are more important. 5mp is more than any cell phone needs, and provides plenty of resolution for larger prints. most use cases are social networking which does not need even a fraction of that resolution. Wait to see camera reviews and comparisons after people get their hands on shipping product.
You do sound a little confused about what phone you want. There's plenty of good products from various manufacturers with good qualities. What you will get from the GN is vanilla Android, timely updates, a solid all-around performer from a hardware standpoint (maybe not the best at any one aspect, but a formidable complete experience), and the warm fuzzies that super geek Android fans get for nexus devices. That may not be right for you, but that's what it is.

My first android phone was the Droid X, I loved it as am android noob, then I rooted, then I flashed my first ROM, then CM7 came out for the DX, then I dropped it in a puddle... I was pretty disappointed when my insurance sent me an X2 as a replacement, but I've made it the most enjoyable I can by making my own ROM for it. Now I realize Moto will never stop locking their phones and hardware specs aren't everything, its about the software, which is why I'm 90% sure I'm going to be picking up the Gnex when my upgrade comes at the end of January. I've never owned a Samsung phone and am still skeptical about the build quality, hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised when I buy it

What do people equate to build quality?
Do you know a phone that people says has the best build quality?
The iPhone 4 and 4s
Do you know what phone when drops shatters?
Thats right the iPhone 4 and 4s.
Judging build quality by feel alone is stupid. Quality means the grade of the materials used and how they are used. A plastic phone using really good plastic is a higher quality phone then a shattering glass phone.

The iPhone 4 and 4S are extremely high quality. They're just... made out of glass. Obviously they're going to break when you drop them. Just like a window will break when you throw a cinder block at it. That doesn't mean the window is low quality....
Their reinforced glass is not as good as gorilla glass, I heard.
The one aspect that people seem to be taking for granted also is that because of all these specs and the Nexus name. Galaxy Nexus is going to have a much larger developer following for rooted customization. Also, when you are looking for a new product what better way to narrow down what to get than to ask an expert...well, developers largely choose Nexus.
(Before someone attacks me with the typical response "not everyone wants to root ". No not everyone does. This was Simply offered as one more possitive to add to the Nexus checklist. )
When it comes down to it. everyone should buy what they want cause no one else cares.

You don't buy the Nexus for the hardware. If my Nexus One would have worked on Verizon I would still be using it.
Let's be honest, if you're regularly browsing this site, chances are you're atleast toying with the idea of rooting the device (if not in the, "The thing will be rooted before I get a text" category).
The Megapixel hype is just that. It's kind of like America's fascination with horsepower -- yes your GT500 outputs crazy numbers, but it still can't turn.
-insert flaming-
Nother Sensation owner here waiting to bounce on the GN for dev support. I will run CM9 or a MiUI ICS variant more than likely. I'd prefer to have the most choice for kernels and roms over slightly better hardware. Do we really need 4 cores in a phone?

No, that still is the case. Even though a manufacture says they will release an update it will never be timely. As manufactures produce more and more models of phones their support goes down the drain. My Samsung Vibrant never got an official update that was promised. The thunderbolt finally got gingerbread.
My G1 was my favorite phone. Great support by htc, google and devs. It always had the latest version of android, even when its hardware could barely run it.
I would rather have a well supported phone than the highest spec phone. While the galaxy nexus appears to have average hardware it will have great android support and dev support.
Availability of developers.
CAN'T STAND OS delays.
Beautiful bezel.
No HD screen + RGB notification combos on Tmo.
That's if this retarded phone ever comes out for Tmo.
Inused to be HTC supporter. But after I got The old Desire, I vowed to not get any HTC anymore. I dislike Sense and replaced with LP pro.
Then I got the Nexus S, and feel really like the design and overal feeling. All blacks, with super Amoled, seems elegant and mysterious.
And it is much lighter as well.
On top of that Qualcomm is not as fast as Hummingbird, Exynos, or now TI Omap.
Nuff said, no HTC anymore.
Nexus phone all the way

I tried to use a SGSII but couldn't live with it. Was coming from a Nexus S and before that I owned a N1. It just didn't feel right. It came shipped with 2.3 then after some time 2.3.4 hit when I sold it a month ago 2.3.5 still wasn't official available. In addition they added a strange bootloader which stopped you from flashing CM7. I don't know exactly what happened there but it was one of the points which led me to sell the phone. I'm using a Desire now until I receive my 100% free GN.

I'll probably just keep my NS for now. All other smartphones sound lame in comparison to the NS + Voodoo Sound.
I've typed on my dad's Galaxy SII before and I really suck at it, so I'm thinking about going with a slider phone.
Obviously, the SIII has better hardware (1.5Ghz instead of 1GHz, 2GB RAM instead of 1GB, 16GB flash vs. 8GB, 720p screen resolution vs. 480p, 1080p video vs. 720p, slower camera) but I think all of these can be absorbed by the $150 saved by going with the Captive Glide.
On the other hand, I live in an area that supports 4G LTE and I've seen reports that its much faster (around an order of magnitude) than the slower 4G standard that the Glide supports. My friend told me, though, that he turns off 4G anyway to preserve battery life.
I've also seen a lot of reports on the web that the Glide battery life is short.
The real decision factors are battery life, typing comfort and Internet speed IMO.
I've never had a smartphone. Given these criteria can you please tell me which one of the phones you recommend?
Thanks
Battery life is always a variable.
If I leave my phone alone for the weekend and I don't use it for 90% of the weekend, it can go 2.5 days before a charge and that's with wifi on the entire time. But of course heavy use and you'll need to charge it after 8 hours, but that's with any phone and I have peeps with SIII and they visit me asking to plug in their phone midday.
As for slider, have u checked if any new slider's have come onto market since november?
best one is prob. droid 4, but i wanna stick with att
I'd vote the Glide, but then you're asking in the Glide forum so we may be a bit biased. Battery life is just fine for me, with an average amount of use I have no problems going a full day on a charge, and even heavy usage is no worse than any other smartphone I've used (or known friends who've used). The keyboard is one of the better ones out there, probably not quite as good as the droid 4 but it's very respectable, so if you're not a fan of touch-screen keyboards that's a huge bonus point. While the SIII is faster, the Glide is certainly not slow. It plays games wonderfully and has no problems with anything I do.
Both are great phones.the question is does it bother you took pay an extra $150 for something that you can do on the glide for less. You need to weigh the pros and cons.
Glide
1. Hardware keyboard
2. Less expensive
3 Smaller more portable
4. This community!
S3
Better hardware
Bigger screen
Ics and probably jelly bean before the glide, not prerelease versions.

the main advantage that the glide has on the s3 (or s2) is the physical keyboard. the hardware of the S3 is much better than the glide (and of curse makes it more expansive).
i know that t-mobile will release the smasung s realy that is more like the S3 hardware specs but with an hardware keyboard.
so if you live in the states and don't mind switching to t-mobile so you should check it out, if you are willing to wait for the release.
here in canada, I'm with rogers. If Rogers didn't send the Sony Xperia Pro to their budget provider Fido, I would of most likely bought it before the glide was announced/sold by Rogers.
I love my Glide, but I can't stand not having an Otterbox (I'm a little rough on my phones) - if you'd be interested, get the S3 and give it a try, if you don't love it, I'd trade my Glide + $150 for the S3 (so long as it'll work on T-Mobile)

Thanks

If this will be your first smartphone, then i warn you, you will face constant battery life issues, no matter what phone you buy.
As for the SIII vs. cap.glide comparsion, the real question is you need physical qwerty or not? Do you type a lot of messages (IM services, SMS, e-mail, etc...) or not?
If you realy need physical qwerty then your choices are realy limited (the only opponent is the Droid 4 but keep in mind that's a WCDMA phone, and will not work on GSM -> "not global compatible'), but if you do not need it, then feel free to look elsewhere.
Oh, and just a side-note, the Captivate Glide is NOT a 4G phone, it is a simple GSM/UMTS phone, the 4G stuff is just some sort of marketing-bullsheet from AT&T as in their eyes a phone with 21Mbps HSDPA support is a "4G" phone, but it is not.
In theory, 4G/LTE networks gives far more bandwitch what the 3.5G/UMTS network offers, but average users never needs more bandwitch what the UMTS network already offers, the real advance for 4G networks is the drastically decreased latency, witch is important for end-users only on such situations as online gaming.

I'm an actual Xperia Pro user (mk16i), and i can assure you the Captivate Glide is a far far better then the Xperia Pro, and beats it from every aspect (except battery, but it's a "standard" issue for all of the modern smartphones). The only reason to worth to buy the Pro, if they sell it at least half the price of the Glide.
As mentioned before, the main reason to get Glide is the hardware keyboard and possibly the $150 price cut. While the latter is entirely up to you to decide, the former was the main reason for me to get a Glide. I used to own a Nexus S and was SICK of typing on touch keyboards because of the large number of errors. Things like people's names, words with very few letters, medical terms, words in my local language using english alphabet etc would mess up even on swype because I had to type them letter by letter and my fingers are quite the sausages.
So I got the Glide and suddenly I hear of this new keyboard in the market called Messagease. It is vastly different from routine keyboards in that it has HUGE buttons and a slight learning curve. And the reason I mention it is that it has mostly replaced my need to use the physical keyboard (I only slide it out when I need to type a LOT of text like in an email spanning a few pages) as it does not rely on autocorrect and gives AMAZING accuracy. If possible, try out Messagease from the market and see if it suits you (remember that there's a learning curve and you have to consider how it would suit you if you already knew the letter locations). If you are satisfied with it and are willing to spend the extra cash, S3 would definitely be a better choice.
My Desire Z is getting a bit old, and has recently started turning itself off. It's only been 15 months but maybe it's time for a new phone. What's the next big phone that appeals to the same audience as the Desire Z?
I don't see anything down the pipeline with a keyboard so I just dropped the money on a nexus 4. What attracted me to the g2 was aosp android so I feel at home on the nexus

Searched for Samsung SG4 but only found some phone released in 2011?
What other keyboard phones are there right now? Has the last keyboard phone already been released?
There sure are a lot of these threads all over xda
Anyway I'm with you, I need a qwerty and I don't care what they say a bigger screen isn't better, I've been using m nexus 7 for 6months now and it still is slower and filled with more mistypes then when using a qwerty. I've used many other talents too as well as my friends note 2, they can be nice but still need a hardware keyboard.
The vision is still the best around in my opinion, I also have a dream and a sidekick 4g and an etc doubleshot, their all good in a way but really the only step up right now is the galaxy relay, even this is hardly worth the money over a vision.
This is just my opinion but until there is something better why leave such a nice phone

Got to agree with demkantor there, I also have a nexus 7 and as long as I'm holding it upright as you would with a phone (you know, clasping you fingers round the back and typing with thumbs) it is not as quick as with my G2. Resting it on your lap and typing with multiple fingers is pretty speedy however, even in portrait.
I put up with my G1 until the battery couldn't get me through the day and it was 5 revisions of Android behind (yeah it can run Gingerbread, but not well, and ICS and JB are a joke on the G1) and I expect to do the same with my Vision, which I love. It's got the very latest version of Android in 3 different varieties (AOSP, CM, AOKP) and it's just great, the battery lasts for days, it's usable at lower-than-stock clock speed and the keyboard is fantastic, I don't know why so many people moaned about it being worse than the G1's, it's just different and you get used to it.
Also, having a physical qwerty keyboard is very useful for more "root-y" purposes: it's so much easier to use Terminal Emulator for example, and console emulators are a lot more fun with a physical keyboard.
I'll be lost when the time does come that I need an upgrade, because phones with keyboards just aren't being made anymore... it's a niche market, which unfortunately I'm part of. Look here. I figured I'll have to go dual core next (at least), and 512MB RAM appears to be pushing it a bit in terms of amount needed for Android, and also development doesn't appear to even be that great for phones with keyboards.... look at the Desire HD, Desire S, or even the original Desire forums compared to the Vision.
...That said, the Moto Photon and DROID 4 look nice... shame I'm in the UK , not a keyboard-phone in sight after the Vision over here. Anyway, long live the Vision!
Sad that no moron OEM sees the need for a QWERTY Android phone.
I'd get the Nexus 4 next now that it's in stock. Or maybe consider going tablet only and get a nexus 7 hspa. (I'm considering doing that after my contract is up)

My old g2 keyboard was too stiff. I'm really liking typing on a 9.8" tablet virtual keyboard. I can almost touch type nearly as fast as on a full sized keyboard.

I was having that issue too. It ended up just being the battery. I got this one on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KPF59Q/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00
The Anker 1600mah, and all the random powerdowns went away. It's lasting about 20% longer than the original was too. Cheap fix if the G2 is still doing it for you in other areas.
I am considering a Nexus 4 at the moment, but I think it's just WANT, not need, so I'll probably manage to avoid that $300 outlay for a while yet.

Hey, I couldn't agree more, I'd love to have a Nexus 4 but I really really don't needd one, not in the same way that I had to get a Vision because my G1 wouldn't last a few hours on it's battery. Hey, courtesy of the Andromadus team, adamz and Fyodor we have 3 different versions of the he latest version of Android.
Also, I also have an Ankers 1600mAh battery, it-s awesome, lasts more than 2 days between charges! (Although I'm not exactly a heavy user, but its miles better than the stock 2 year old HTC one)
Experience report - missing my keyboard
I had trouble finding a well-speced qwerty phone, so I had to settle for a Samsung Galaxy SIII LTE. It was either that or a Nexus 4.
My plan was to get a case with an external bluetooth keyboard for it. I got one and it's bad, so now I've ordered another type.
If I could get a Desire Z with more memory and a fresher CPU, that would have been my choice
The qwerty-phones I considered were:
Samsung Galaxy S Relay 4G
Motorola Photon Q
LG Mach (LS860)
Motorola Droid 4
These models don't have the highest specs, but that may be outweighed by a decent keyboard.

of these, the Droid 4 has the best keyboard by far, and the LG Mach has the prettiest screen (IPS panel)
The problem with the Droid 4 is there is near null development. When Android 5.0 come out, you'll either get a ****ty expirence or you wont get it at all.
No ASOP, no CM, no nothing. Thats why the Droid 4 hasnt exploded.

What about the Captivate Glide? or Stratosphere I, II
my :tank: has blown your house up
Desire Z is the best phone I have ever seen
You can change ROM and your Desire Z will be better
I'm probably gonna buy myself a new phone pretty soon, been looking a lot at the HTC ONE, looks like a solid piece of work!
But pretty expensive, and my nephew has a galaxy s3 he's selling cheap, only problem is the samsungs are so plasticcy, there's just not that much of a quality feel...
I am also considering the htc one x plus.
If only we we're able to upgrade the processor and memory of our DZ, or just the memory for that sake and I probably wouldn't even consider buying a new one

Haven't tried them. Images look ok. If specs are good (enough) too, I would consider them if I was buying
No QWERTYs
Desire Z has been a great phone. Unfortunately, every Android coming out these days seems to be a 6" phablet with a touchscreen keyboard.
I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I might look at Blackberries, especially if they come out with a slider.
HTC, give us a G3!
i love adroid slider phone like my desire z so i'm going to test the Huawei U8730 (T-Mobile MyTouch Q by Huawei)
