Disabling the data connection - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

I have an old Touch Pro 2 that I just gave to my sister. Her line doesn't have unlimited data on it like mine did, and even though I've disabled everything that might use the data connection in the background, I'm just afraid of that one thing she might do to turn it on.
Is there an app or setting to completely disable it so that she can use it as a phone and for the wifi only without the data?

Disable data in connection manager. Show her where it is, and tell her to NEVER enable it, lest she get charged thru the nose.

I was looking for a download for that that didn't require paying to sign up. Thanks.
She keeps telling me I'm putting parental controls on the phone by disabling the data services. It's almost like that. Even I would be afraid to use a smart phone loosely without an unlimited plan. My g2x has things always running in the background that uses data.

If you disable data, I don't see how it can still use data in the background...
Certainly that cab is a more brute-force solution to the issue. I guess if she NEVER needs 3g data, then that's fine... but you say she has at least a limited data plan, does she not want to use it at all?

She doesn't have a data plan at all. That's why I want to turn it off, because if she goes on it, it'll run up a mega bill.

Can you explain what you mean by this? Did you mean Comm Manager? Or the Connections section under Settings?
The Data Connection button in the Comm Manager only disconnects the current connection, but any app will open the connection again if it needs to.
I'm overseas with my unlocked TP2 now, and bought a local sim so that I could make voice calls, but the damn data connection keeps reconnecting and depleting my balance! I've even created new dummy connections IOT disable the connection, but it keeps opening it anyway. I'm not opening any apps, but SPB Wireless Monitor attributes it to the 'system'.
Very frustrating!

I... don't remember having this issue, but it's honestly been quite some time since I've used WinMo.
Perhaps see the cab that was posted earlier. I thought disabling the data cxn would keep it off - I'm pretty sure it did for me running EnergyROM, but again... this was quite some time ago.
But yes to answer your question in Comm Manager.

Tethering app success since there is no root

What are people using for tethering since root isn't available yet?
Ive used the method described in the following thread. The best part about how it works is that it offers infrastructure mode, so I can tether my Galaxy Tab without any problems.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1079340
Note: See post #6
I heard that doing the ##778 edit causes a loss of phone data while tethered to the PC. Meaning data on the phone is dead but the pc has data. Is this true? After the edit do you just use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app?
Yes it's true, I've tried it.

But do you lose data on the phone while tethering? Also do you use the stock vzw app?
The answer to both questions is yes. I actually hadn't noticed it before but on my Dinc2 the signal meter only shows 1X instead of 3G when I activate the hotspot option. I guess I don't find that all too terrible as the only time I'm tethered I'm either using my tablet or my laptop.
Once the change is made, the hotspot app functions like it would if you were subscribed to the service.
What why would you do the hack if you only get 1x when tethering, that would be crazy slow.
Oops, My mistake. It appears my earlier reply was a load of crap!
3G is still clearly visible with hotspot enabled. Just ran a speed test on my Galaxy Tab. Downloads ranged from 473-329kbps with uploads between 303-193kbps.
So just to clarify. You did the following edits.
-in edit mode you will open 'security' and 'm.ip default profile' in turn. each time you look for the only entry containing "dun", as in:
<your actual phone number>@dun.vzw3g.com
edit out the "dun." so it looks like
<your actual phone number>@vzw3g.com
And you then use the stock 3g mobile hotspot app. After you enable the hotspot can you browse using the phone also? Or does internet on the phone stop working.
I think you're right, clarification is certainly in order.
Yes I simply removed dun from both of those locations and now use the standard, VZW included, hotspot app.
The phone cannot access the internet while tethering is enabled. Certainly a sacrifice, but from what I've seen so are the apps available with a rooted device which from my understanding cannot create an infrastructure hotspot, only ad-hoc.
Yeah the phone data loss kinda is a downfall. But I have an infrastructure connection with wireless tether on incredible 1 just for your info. Some apps are lucky and give good connections. well loss of data is probably a sacrifice I will make. thanks
Seems to me that the only time this would really matter is if you're sharing your connection with friends while still using your phone for data. Is there something I'm missing? I can see it being a minor annoyance but something I'd personally never run into.

If the detection is at the app level (unauthorized), like the article suggests, the hack may still be under the radar for the time being since folks are probably using the authorized app pre-installed on their phone.

Wifi grayed out

This has been going on for some time now. I cannot actually pinpoint when it happened. But whenever I am at work, I can connect to the network and it's grayed out. I can still browse and use some app but I don't get notifications from my apps and cannot use Google Talk, for example. That entire app is grayed out.
It's an 802.1x EAP - PEAP - MSCHAPV2.
Anyone got any ideas or tricks to fix this? It used to work before and it doesn't. I do not believe anything changed on our end. And I also cannot just restart the router at work. Thanks in advance.

Can you access gmail directly? Sounds like google services may be blocked by your network admin? Just a guess...
Im trying to understand what exactly is happening with you.
Are you getting a wifi signal and no notifications?
or are you not getting any wifi signal at all?
If you are getting a connection but notifications and google apps dont work, it could be that your work router those ports blocked or has a firewall infront of it.
If you are not getting any wifi signal at all, I would try and backup everything, and do a factory rest - update. basically a stock, unrooted wipe and reflash.
Don't know why our how to fix it. But I know that if your wifi is gray you still have data connection. And if it's blue your connected to Google services as well
Jellin' like a felon
Okay, thanks guys. The ports may be blocked. I get WiFi connection, but the indicator is grayed out. When that is so, I can still go into an app and use it with manual refreshes but I never get notifications automatically like I'm supposed to. They only start to pop in one I leave with and get back in the cellular network. And for an app like gtalk, I cannot use whatsoever as I'm signed out.

This happened to me before and basically it was how my IT guy setup our WiFi network in our office. I couldn't use any Google push services on my phone (gmail, gtalk, calender, etc...). Every thing would work fine when I was on data connection, but would stop on WiFi. I just stopped using my work WiFi when I was in the office. It definitely had something to do with the firewall/privileges of the WiFi network.

Do you have wifi set to turn off when the display turns off?
I came across this thread because I'm having the same problem with my GS3, the only thing that solved it was installing a WiFi manager app from the market.
Factory reset plus downgrading from 4.2.2 to 4.2.0 was the only thing that worked for me.
FIX FOR GREY WIFI/MOBILE DATA, and google account sync
HI THERE, sorry im new to e forum, anyways im using a SGS 3LTE with custom rom CM 10.2 android 4.3, CWM touch recovery. So many people are not able to connect to the play store and services over wifi, but only over mobile data. Another issue is that the cellular data and wifi tend to remain grey, unlike that of android 4.0 and back which remains blue. So to solve this heres what i did.
DID EVERY F**KING CRAP OUT THERE. DIDNT WORK.
What i did: use a file manager with root access, look for 'hosts' file in systempath 'system/etc/' and deleted it. So far so good, its permanently blue for both wifi and cellular data, and also i am able to access google apps and store without a hitch.
DO SHARE WITH ME UR FINDINGS/RESULTS AND SPREAD THE LOVE PEOPLE
On a side note: i used to flash and modify small roms for my old htc hd2, but the above fix was heard from a website from god knows where LOL, im singaporean, i speak singlish, and im proud of it so im not gonna apologise for the broken english
In case this helps anyone, the way I solved it at home with my Galaxy Nexus is by changing the setting of the router to Wireless G or N only. I have two routers, so I set one on 802.11g and the other on 802.11n only. By default my DLinks came with mixed wireless protocols. The problem with this is that it seems to confuse devices. That's why they also used to take long to connect to Wifi in general. Since I've made them only one standard now, they connect very quickly. Also, because I had mixed B, G and N on my best router, I never got to really use N. Turns out I had my authentication on WEP, and the only way you're getting N is by using WEP2 with AES.
Fix is here
Hello There, I tried to reset phone, clearing chache,Data but it wont work but now
I have a quick solution on this issue and grey wifi becomes blue in some minutes.
All you need is "Rooted Phone"
1.Install : Root Explorer
2. Grant SuperSU permission to Root Explorer
3. Mount Root Explorer into Read/Write (R/W).
4. Go To System > etc > locate "HOSTS" file in etc folder.
5. Edit Hosts file using root explorer
6. Insert the symbol # before the second set of IP address numbers then save the changes and exit.
7. Reboot your phone...
8. wifi icon will be blue as you start your phone back and some apps like Google play store, keep, etc will be start as normal.
Thanks.

Free tethering experiences

Just trying to get a handle on the current state of free tethering. Using a locked phone with grandfathered unlimited data and nothing else.
So far, every app that allows Wi-Fi hotspot or Bluetooth tethering fails due to a nagging popup error message (attachment #1), the same one that appears when I try to turn on the stock hotspot (attachment #1 actually shows the error popping up on CWM tether, but this is misleading - I had just turned on the stock hotspot to elicit the message is all. Never seen the error when using USB tethering).
Tried FoxFi/PDANet and about 8 other Market apps - no dice.
Only method I've found to work is USB tethering from PDANet to my laptop. Without tethering hidden, it seems to crap out after about 20 seconds on YouTube, but works fine for other stuff.
With the Hide Tether Level 1 option checked on the PC program, PDANet works flawlessly - can stream 1080p with no problems.
However, when I try to share that connection to my tablet over Wi-Fi, either through PDANet's built-in Wi-Fi share or using Connectify, it goes back to crapping out after 20 seconds on Youtube. Lasts longer at lower resolutions but still dies, so this seems to be a cap on the data that a single stream can give. No amount of tether hiding seems to help. Of note - the PDANet phone app's data ticker will keep on going up, so it seems like it's still downloading, but there's a roadblock somewhere. Could possibly be an issue with the tablet, I guess - 2013 Nexus 7. My hunch though is that somehow sharing the connection over Wi-Fi undoes whatever PDANet uses to hide tethering.
I've also tried ClockworkMod Tether for USB tethering, but my laptop won't connect to the internet with it (attachment #2) - this could be a problem with my computer though. Right now all I have to work with is a school laptop with locked-down firewall settings.
Anyone figure out a way to get Wi-Fi or Bluetooth working with no paid hotspot feature?
I also have grandfathered data and no hotspot plan, and I am able to run PDANet properly with no special workarounds whatsoever. The biggest concession I had to make was installing the certificates for FoxFi, and the resulting requirement to have a PIN enabled on my lockscreen.
So I dunno.

Yeah, FoxFi seems to indicate that the certificate is their workaround for this issue - however I was never prompted to install it and there doesn't seem to be a way to force it either. Gonna try a reinstall then a factory reset because I want that certificate bad :good:

NP. The cert definitely works, I tethered several times this weekend. If you prefer not to use a security lock it can be a little annoying to have one forced on you; I just set the timeout to 15 minutes and call it the price of doing business until we can unlock/root/etc.

Verizon can only take your unlimited data away if you let them. Refuse to change plans, refuse subsidized upgrades and buy all future phones full-price. You may not have realized what you were doing, but you let them do it at some point.

Sad times... according to Verizon I've already racked up 4 gigs somehow in a single day. Sure am glad I didn't believe the salesman who told me I'd never exceeded 2 gigs on 3G - especially since they actually admitted they were lowballing people by a factor of 5. I'd switch carriers, no reason to stay tbh. Unless of course you have another line on the account that's still on unlimited.

That's exactly case. My wife was able to keep unlimited when she upgraded in January.
We do the upgrade shuffle. Upgraded kids lines to Fort note 2's and kids lost unlimited data, dropped them to 2gb. Poor kids, I know. They are 12 and 9. Verizon let's me restrict them to 2gb so they can't go over.
Then about a month later there was the free dna promotion. Swapped our upgrades to kids lines, got them the dna's. We kept unlimited and everyone got new phones.

i couldnt get this to work either. every time i reinstall foxfi it says i need to call verizon and sign up for tethering. never prompted for a certificate or anything
I got it to work. After I installed foxfi and the add-on I started the hotspot and it popped up asking to install the certificate. Installed it named it. It wants you to set up the unlock passcode because it connects through vpn. Since I already use a vpn, my password was already set. It activated after a few seconds and I tested it. Works fine.
You can also use upgrades from other phones on your plan to keep your unlimited. I rely heavily on my unlimited data, I use roughly between 300 - 400Gb a month of data. I still have unlimited, and haven't paid full price for a single phone the whole life of my plan.

This is an older picture as evidence, it was just one I already had uploaded to my computer. I use an insane amount of data.. Although, it has been much more of an ordeal using WiFi-Tether on my HTC One. I have to use FoxFi which won't allow me to connect to HBOGo through my AppleTV, so I haven't had streaming video too much.
I also had issues with FoxFi, but thankfully I was one of those lucky bastards who got their bootloader unlocked on day one. From a rooted device, WiFi Tether 3.3-beta2-06102013 works just fine (it will complain when starting the hotspot about an error, but it's an error in setting up "ad-hoc mode" and will work just fine)... it may be worth mentioning that I'm using SuperSU as that's always given me the best luck with WiFi Tether. Outside of that, it's worked flawlessly (tethering for hours without any drops).

That's great and all, but it doesn't seem to work for some other mobile devices. For example: I cannot tether my One to my Nexus 7 FHD. The Nexus 7 FHD does not see the network. My laptop can see the SSID but shows an adhoc icon next to it. I can connect via the laptop and get internet access. At the end of the day I need a solution that works for all of my devices.
Note: I tried versions 3.3-beta2 and 3.4-experimental

Data usage not adding up?

See the attached screenshot - it says I used ~1.5G over the last 3 days (note: this is roughly consistent with Verizon's online data tracker, which shows ~1.43G used, so I DO think the data was actually used).
But when you add up all the apps it shows data used for, it only comes to a few hundred megabytes.
I tried moving the start date back a day and that didn't help.
That's a lot of data to use in 3 days (I'm usually on wifi most of the day), so I'm trying to figure out what used it. Perhaps a system app, but it looks like the data usage calculator includes them.
Any ideas? Thanks.
I accidentally posted this to the regular Note 10 forum before I noticed a separate Note 10+ forum - sorry!

Yes I'm Back! - Apps only use Wifi, Not Data

Ok so I've come from a Note10+ with Pie, now kinda dead, to a Note 10+ with 11 (whatever they call that).
Play Store, Ebay and others will not connect over data, they insist on the Wifi network or there's no network according to them.
Of course Data is on etc, etc.
You would thnk by the 11th try at a mobile O/S they might have got it right by now....but then Microsoft...well I won't go there.
Any idea's why they are ignoring a perfectly good data connection that Opera is fine with and others?
Thank you.

Ok so I've come from a Note10+ with Pie, now kinda dead, to a Note 10+ with 11 (whatever they call that).
Play Store, Ebay and others will not connect over data, they insist on the Wifi network or there's no network according to them.
Of course Data is on etc, etc.

Is this happening after upgrading?
In playstore setting check the app download is enabled only mobile data or not, if it set to wifi only, set it for mobile data and wifi{similar options}, try clearing app data
Settings/applications/playstore/storage or data, clear it

Nope, won't play the game.
I noticed that the setting "Mobile data only apps" is greyed out for some reason, it will not let me tell it to allow apps to use data.
Why on earth would it be greyed out?
Of course it is set to off.
Any idea's about that?
Thank you.

I did try as you suggested but it hasn't helped unfortunately.
I really don't feel like resetting the phone, its only new and I just finished setting it up!
But it is starting to annoy me now.
check under settings/connections/data usage that data saver is off
Lol, I stayed on Pie... no issues.
Android 11 is known to be a pain.
If you have unlimited an data plan, disable wifi.
Clear system cache and do a network reset.
Factory reset...
If you didn't do a factory reset after upgrading to 11 or if you used SmartSwitch, factory reset.
If you can't find the cause of this issue suspect malware... factory reset.
Rootkit infections are very rare unless you do something stupid but they can happen.
Android 9 and above are not susceptible to the "immortal" rootkits, a factory reset will purge any infection on the internal memory.
If doubt, factory reset asap... it's the only way to be sure. Shotgun get it done.
Phone is brand new, my Pie one is dead.
This new Note came with 11 on it.
I do not know if it was from Samsung like this or if the seller upgraded it hoping to help sell his stock, make it seem more appealling?
Anyway I'm doing a factory reset on the weekend and see what happens.
Thanks for all your help.
I'll let you know how it goes.

The 10+ all were loaded with Pie for the whole product run as far as I know.
Keep an eye on it... see is the reset gets it.
So it turns out its my firewall. In Pie if I allowed an app internet access in the firewall everything was all good.
For some reason (I have emailed the Dev) in Android 11 allowing an app internet access is not working correctly, internet via WiFI works but cellular data does not, even though it should, data is available for use and app has permission to use it. The firewall is still blocking somehow. Turning the firewall off immediately restores internet via cell data.
I would presume the firewall app only needs an update for Android 11 or I may have to get a new firewall if that does not happen.
Cheers for all the help everyone.
Hi again, more about this issue.
It seems my problem is caused by Google with Android 11. It appears they changed something to mess up firewalls because they stop their ads getting through (1 of the reasons why I use one).
I have started using a new firewall - Netguard, so far it seems to be doing what it should be doing and I have cell data back for allowed programs and its blocking disallowed apps correctly.
Hope this helps somebody along the way.
