Switching carriers, need suggestions. - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I was one of the people who switched to sprint during the scare of a buyout of tmobile from the evil empire. Well I used this phone a whole great deal while working as a person tech to download drivers and such. Now sprint is terminating my contract and I have to move elsewhere. I am wondering who is the best alternative to sprint, and wondering what phone to get. I also want to know about where I can sell this phone.

Well I think it all depends on how much your looking to spend and how much talk/text/data you need a month.

Meh If I was not on sprint I would be on Verizon just for reasons of coverage. Though id love to be back on a GSM carrier.

Did T-Mobile cover your needs? If so, just go back to them. I know they're on par with Sprint as far as pricing goes.

Yeah if I chose a postpaid carrier I would probably go with Verizon for CDMA or T-Mobile for GSM.
For prepaid I would probably go with straight talk.

After going through some of the choices I narrowed it down to the following:
HTC rezound
Droid razor max
Tmobile version of this phone
Any others I should be taking a look at? I only root and run vanilla OS.
Sent from the bottom of a pickle barrel.

I would go RAZR MAXX if you dont mind the locked bootloader, just on size and battery life. But being the tinkerer I am I would end up on the GNEX in the current selection sadly.

If I were you I would port my et4g over to page plus or something and wait a few months for the gs3 to drop and go back to T-Mobile at that point

Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium

How about Boost Mobile that way you can still possibly keep your phone. I know they are affiliated with sprint but I don't think they will hate on you because of that. Question what was the reason they terminated your contract?
If I helped you out in any way please thank me. Thanks.

I know Credo has this phone (exact same version), don't know about pricing though.

I pay 106 a month without discounts. Anyone else paying this amount?

That explains AT&T's higher priced plans. IS that why the OP already called them evil empire.
Definitely find the coverage and plan that fits you but I always tell people to pick the phone that you know you will like. Settling for a device that we use for so many things even before rooting is not going to end well.
Good luck.

At least any of the other major networks will be a huge upgrade over sprint in data speeds. I came to sprint from T mobile and I really regret it. Though I think my sprint phones are awesome, they are crippled by an awful network.

Actually, here's the reason for AT&T's high priced plans. Randall Stephenson compensation Now for a point of reference here is the compensation for the POTUS
Randy had AT&T buy his house when Corporate HQ was moved from San Antonio to Dallas. He and his family enjoy free health care for life.

Actually, as a member (unemployed) of local 613, I do understand labor union priorities and politics. I don't have a problem with unions in general but do not for one second proclaim their method of operation as a universal fit for everyone. It isn't.
As someone who is working (cue scary voice) non-union, I shouldn't be criticized for doing what is necessary to provide for my family in both where I work or whose phone service I select. (getting back to the topic of phones)
That attitude is a large part of how Apple operates (trying to stay on topic) and since we are h4x0rs, we must recognize that sometimes the universal fit, is not for us.
To the OP -I apologize for my contribution to the thread jack.

Availability at Best Buy and Radioshack?????

Has anyone been able to get a definate answers as to wether Best Buy and Radio Shack will be getting the Epic Touch 4g? If so what price did they say???
It sure doesn't seem like Radio Shack knows what's up. They didn't have a clue what phone I was referring to and told me to check back on Thursday afternoon after I said SGS2, Epic Touch, and finally Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic Touch 4G! Wow..really?

Its confirmed at Best Buy for Friday but price is still unknown. Was gonna be 199.99 but may be 149.99 thanks to walmart
I've heard confirmation of BB Friday morning at open, should be the regular $199.99 price with contract that is being advertised. From my experience, BB hasn't dropped prices until pretty much everybody else has, but I guess it's never too late to change
They will price match though!

Im actually hoping that the 149.99 walmart price will hold through to the brick and mortar stores. Then with a little luck you can persuade best buy to match. Otherwise 199.99, but Im not sweating it too much. Im going to either sell or trade my evo, which should help me out quite a bit. Then with having to carry a phone for work they will kick in some monies for a new device every year. I just have to find someone to have one in stock on launch. I just got off the phone with my sprint store, which is a sprint store by wireless paradise, and the said that they are backordered bad. He then proceeded to tell me Sammy didnt make enough and that Im going to quite lucky to get one on launch.... I will be the worlds saddest panda if I dont get one of these. I havent been this hyped about a device since lite brite.

If you posted this from your phone, logged onto this forum and made a thread. Is that not using the full capacity of the service provider on your mobile device?
Most people here have been with sprint prior to coming to the S3 and we just deal with it mostly because of price and unlimited data. It's pretty well known that sprint doesn't have the best coverage (could change in the future) and if this is a deal breaker for anyone then that person should've researched more before signing on.

If you're near Chicago it may be an issue with the pending upgrade to LTE.
I just came to Sprint from Verizon because Verizon is too expensive and because they (and the handset manufacturers whose phones they sell) lock everything down so tightly. I really got fed up with them when they claimed that the OG Droid (which I owned) was not capable - from a hardware standpoint - of wireless tethering when my Droid was rooted and I was actually tethering. Sprint's coverage is currently not as good as Verizon, but it is cheaper, it is unlimited data, and I think it will be much better coverage when the upgrade to LTE is done and they "turn on the switch." Until the upgrade is done why don't you just quietly "ride out the storm."
That being said, I get 4G about 80% of the time and am getting about 15M up and 1.9M . Maybe you can look forward to that.
Sprint does do things as- backwards,
Sprint was the First with the Best 4G device available, the Evo 4G, but most customers never saw Wimax to take full advantage of the Evo's capabilities.
I didn't see Wimax until over a year later, and I was one of the fortunate ones
All the promises by Sprint regarding Wimax coming to your city soon, were emptier than a pot full of gold left in the middle of Times Square at High Noon.
Now we have LTE, well most really don't, at least for now.
I do hope that LTE is not rolled out like Wimax Never was.
Hey, I got my S3 without LTE availability yet. Was this a smart choice? Probably not. But I like the S3 if it begins to have the ability to make calls without constantly dropping them.
Hopefully the LF9 modem takes care of this.
Yet I digress.
As I said, Sprint's track record has been poor regarding rolling out Networks. I will be happy if LTE proves me wrong........

You do know that Sprint is currently in a total rebuild of the Chicago system with the Network Vision/LTE upgrade. According to S4GRU.com they are about 40% built, with an estimated deployment of September 2012. When they rebuild a market there are disruptions.
I, on the other hand am in a market not even scheduled for LTE yet.

[Q] Switching from ATT Galaxy S III to T-Mobile Galaxy S III (DC Metro)

ATT is screwing me by refusing to carry forward my unlimited data plan to LTE and has repeatedly tried to force me onto a capped plan.
I saw a newspaper ad today (archaic - I know!) saying T-Mo has an unlimited everything plan for this phone for $90 and it's tempting. I'm hoping to sell or swap my existing GS3.
Is there anything I should be aware of?
Also, what is T-mo's take on this plan if I try to tether?
Thanks.
I'm pretty sure you can just swap sims? Tethering has been beaten to death on these forums. I'd take a few minutes to search and ask your questions in those threads if they haven't been covered yet.

I think I already made it clear I anticipated getting a new S3. I know that they aren't fully compatible for 3/4G/LTE.
Re: Tethering. I though this was a new plan - it appears to be as much in the advert.
They block tethering on unlimited data plans but rooted tethering might work. I haven't tried it yet.

They are trying to kill teather with updates. I tried T-Mobile with still having my main line on att. Speeds were either really fast or dead slow. I'd rather just stick with att because it's decently fast wherever I go.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
I just recently re-upped with T-Mobile. They have two types of plans out right now. They have what they call the classic plan and I can't remember what their new plans are called.
Anyway, with the classic plan you get the phone subsidized, but the plan itself is pretty expensive. On the other hand if you get their newer plan, you pay full price for the phone, but the plan itself is dirt cheap (cheapest I can find among the major carriers). While $600 for a phone might seem like a lot, they only require a $200 down payment and since you're starting a new contract you'll probably get $100 or so knocked off. The rest of the price of the phone is spread throughout the first 20 months of your contract.
Applying a little basic finance and assuming you have a decent stock portfolio, I estimated my cost of my Galaxy S3 at around $350 and my monthly fees went down from $230-250 to its current $140-150.
Don't know much about T-Mobile signal in your area, but if you can manage a consistent 3G I'd say it's worth the cost savings.
I would tell you that you will be very happy with t-mobile vs att, I did the switch my self and I couldn't be any happier, my data is very fast and yes it is faster than att and I get 4g 95% of the time in my area, my brother still have att with the s3 and my phone is way faster than his, on a speed test mine gets between 17000-22000 kbs consent vs his the highest he gets is about 5000-8000

T-Mobile is merging with MetroPCS!!

Well, turns out that rumors of a MetroPCS and T-Mobile merger weren't completely off base. While we wouldn't expect Deutsche Telekom to announce the sale of its US property any time soon, the German giant has confirmed that its holding talks with America's sixth largest mobile operator to combine the two networks. The prospective deal would involve combining the two into a single entity, with Deutsche Telekom as the majority shareholder. Of course there are significant obstacles in the way, including divergent network technologies and distinctly different marketing strategies. This is, of course, just the latest scene in the ongoing piece of corporate theater that almost saw the struggling magenta carrier absorbed by AT&T. We'll of course be following closely to see if such a move would sit a little better with government regulators. The complete statement from Deutsche Telekom confirming the talks is after the break.

Thoughts???
From Bloomberg
T-Mobile USA, with 33.2 million customers at the end of June, or a third of each of market leaders Verizon Wireless and AT&T, is seeking to stem client losses it has suffered partly because it doesn’t have the rights to sell Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iPhone.
A combination with Richardson, Texas-based MetroPCS would give T-Mobile USA, with its headquarters in Bellevue, Washington, an additional 9.3 million prepaid customers.
T-Mobile USA, the fourth-largest U.S. carrier, has lost 2.76 million contract customers, or more than 10 percent of its subscriber base, in the eight quarters through June.
Shares of MetroPCS were up 18 percent at $13.54 as of 12:32 p.m. in New York, giving the company a market value of $4.9 billion. Deutsche Telekom closed 1.3 percent higher on the Frankfurt exchange, after surging as much as 4.4 percent. The former German phone monopoly has a market capitalization of 42.1 billion euros ($54.5 billion). Sprint Nextel slumped as much as 7.1 percent in New York.
They gonna merge for 1 year thats what my boss told me ....

Couple of weeks ago my boss had a meeting regarding about the GS3 LTE they gonna relase it somewhere before the year is over ...
Makes sense for T-Mobile for a couple of reasons.
1. MetroPCS has quite a bit of PCS (1900 MHz) and AWS (1700 MHz) spectrum, both which are needed by T-Mobile now, especially with the refarming and imminent LTE roll out.
2. MetroPCS' customers are all prepaid, so T-Mobile can eventually wean them off of CDMA phones.
3. MetroPCS has already begun rolling out their LTE network, so it will give T-Mobile a nice boost.
4. Gives T-Mobile about 10 million more customers, something they desperately needed.
Nice to see DT is trying their best to improve T-Mobile and make them competitive. Sad to say (being an Android fan), but the next logical step would be getting a deal done with Apple for the iPhone.
Might take a while. Antitrust laws can be degrimental to their plans
I don't think antitrust will be a problem, this is a lot different than the AT&T merger. The reasons pointed out ^^^^^ are great ones. I think the nearly 10m new users will help bring more services/quality. Looks like tmo is making the right moves, getting a new CEO and now this. It's definitely bad news for sprint/boost/virgin though. If all 5 carriers ended up under the tmo banner that could be pretty awesome :good: Consolidating to less carriers could be bad or good but I think the added competitive strength and compatibilities to take on Verizon and AT&T would be good in the long run.
News like this always excites me because it shows tmo is making big moves. This is much better than them being acquired by some evil giant
Mergers always bring higher priceslower competition. Nothing to cheer up.
It is a done deal
They are merging

You mean they did already. Money paid and working on implementation of both networks as we speak. For those excited for LTE you got your wish it just depends on when their done setting it in stone, they are already testing in 5 states one of which it Texas.

Sprint isn't really unlimited

I just got a call from sprint customer service warning me that they were going to cut me off if I didn't stop tethering.... I did it once to allow my dad to use his laptop to take care of his bills while he is recovering from a triple bypass.. once in 6 months and I get called and warned.. talk about tight! Gimme a break sprint! What a joke! I was deciding between sprint and AT&T when I got my s3 so I may just go that route anyway if Sprint are going to be that ridiculous about it... just a fair warning. ... I was using foxfi with a Bluetooth tether to do it. Whatever you do... don't tether like that or Sprint will call and threaten you...

Sprint offers unlimited data, texts, and calls. Tethering requires a different plan and its limited. If you're tethering for free, you don't have anything to complain about.

What this guy said. The official tether option is considered a add-on, not included in your unlimited data.
Unlimited data only covers the data going to phone not to another device.
I guess you didn't read your tos agreement.

I have been with sprint for 2 years with my evo4g rooted and using WiFi tether, I connect everything to it and download music, videos, streaming movies and games and never got any call.

Might be something with that certain program or bluetooth. I've tethered to the Nexus 7 for 300+MB games, and even whole movie downloads prior with the wifi tether options listed here on xda and never had any issues. What the other say is correct though, the plan does only cover unlimited data to the phone.
Fun times either way, thanks for the heads up !
Sprint is Unlimited if you follow the TOS you agreed to.

While Sprint CEO Dan Hesse appeared at Citi’s Entertainment, Media and Telecommunications conference Thursday to talk up Sprint’s new LTE plans, he let slip a change in Sprint’s data policies that could have a big impact on iPhone and other smartphone customers lured in by Sprint’s unlimited plans. Hesse acknowledged that Sprint has been throttling back speeds to the 1 percent heaviest consumers of smartphone data. While technically, the service is still unlimited, the admission leaves egg on Hesse’s face since he’s criticized the competition for adopting similar data restrictions in the past.
Felt I had to out this out their as a reply to the last thread about this >=]
