[Q] [WhatIsYour] Softbutton Configuration - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

just curious what everyone uses...
I have mine configured as:
back (kill app) ; home (recents) ; search (voice search)....with invisible menu keys on both sides

Home, recent, back, search.
I came from a droid incredible. I love my onscreen buttons on my nexus so much. My next phone which is a while off since I love my nexus has to have on screen buttons.

back (kill), home (blank), menu (search)
came from nexus s and hard for me to say goodbye to the permanent menu button. Recents I never use. Up until a few days ago I had search as a 4th button but decided to get rid of it as I don't use it that much.

back (kill app) : phone (contacts) : home (recents) : camera (camcorder) : search (voice search)
Gotta love AOKP

back (kill app), home (recents), menu (search)
There's still a huge amount of apps that haven't been updated for ICS, so it makes more sense to have a dedicated menu button for now.

Possible to add a full size menu button to ICS?

Is it possible to add a full size menu button much like the search button was added. I tried ICS on an older phone and the menu button seemed to work in even the native apps. I hate the look of the dot one that comes up in stock ics and with the mod to make it appear all the time. Ideal for me would be to make the button layout identical to my droid incredible. So home, menu, back, and search. Hold home down for the app switch. Hold menu for keyboard. Hold search for voice search. This has to be possible somehow since its all software keys now.

VZW Soft Keys/Navigation Bar Mod?

I've searched through many threads now, and come up empty handed. I'm looking to change the navigation bar / soft key buttons. What I would like is:
Menu : Home : Back : Search
Long pressing home would bring up recents.
Does a mod like this exsist?
Well I was running a different rom based off CM9, however when I went to the official CM9, it's easy to switch those buttons.
Settings --> System --> Navigation Bar.
Problem solved.
Download AOKP and super problem solved.
I'be made my home button open S Voice when held down. =p
IPhone style.

[Q] Possible to change task manager button to menu?

I currently own a HTC Desire and was thinking about buying a new phone and I can't decide between Galaxy S3 and HTC One X yet.
When I watched this comparison here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtXAkNd9k68 I saw the HTC One X has Back, Home and Task Manager Buttons.
From my HTC Desire I know you can bring up Task Manager by long pressing Home Button, so I wonder why there is a Task Manager button (maybe for not so smart users?). And if there is a menu it takes away from screen real estate to display a menu button bar or for HTCs own apps, it displays a menu button on top right corner.
I like the black & white borderless theme of Sense better than the blue/gray border theme of Galaxy phones (for menu, popups, selectboxes, widgets, etc).
Would it be possible, to change the task manager button into a menu button?
Apparently HTC are going to do this in a future OTA update - or at least give us the ability to do like you request and do away with the horrible black bar which presents itself in some apps.
However - if you are into flashing roms then some of the custom roms give you the ability to change the functionality if the bottom three buttons - also adding long press abilities which you can define yourself, you can also toggle the black bar on/off if you so desire aswell, the following is a Rom which supports what you are after - comes highly recommended from myself;

as for why HTC make the recent task button, they followed Google. Google said its the death of the menu button, and introduced the action bar. not all apps are updated with it yet, so One X suffer with the black menu bars, except for google apps. unlike Galaxy Nexus, which has soft buttons, not capacitive like One X.

What is this mysterious bar?

If you look at the screenshot of Dolphin browser there is a black bar with 3 dots on it.
I'm not sure what made it appear, but its functionality is:
1) open settings for some applications (dolphin, golauncher).
2) not do anything for some applications even though it shows up.
3) annoys the crap out of me because I want it gone. It blocks a big amount of screen.
I don't know what caused it to appear, I've never seen it before. I was updating my phone and installing some applications when I suddenly noticed it.
Edit:
Attachment is not showing up for me so here's an upload on tinypic: http://i50.tinypic.com/equt75.png
That's the 3-dot menu button.
Go to Settings - Display, gestures & buttons - Recent apps button
and pick either Press for menu, press and hold for recent apps
or Press for recent apps, press and hold for menu
I personally use the second one, long press the recent apps button will bring up the menu

You'll see it in apps that haven't been optimised for ICS (or higher) yet. On phones without a hardware menu key, correctly coded apps will display an overflow button somewhere on their action bar to access the menu. Apps which haven't been coded in this way need some other method of accessing the menu - phones with on-screen buttons (like the nexus range) display a menu button beside the other buttons, we obviously can't do that so HTC chose to stick a massive menu bar across the bottom of the screen. As already pointed out you can reassign the menu function to the 'recent apps' key which will hide the menu bar, or you can pester the devs of those apps to do things properly in future.
Oh my god. Thanks guys!
I looked everywhere but couldn't fix it!

Can I customize the capacitive buttons with root? How?

I know there is the "buttons" menu in settings and it gives some options for which button does what and button swap but I want more!
Like, long press the back button to kill an app (useful for closing the web browser, for instance, instead of hitting back a billion times or menu - close)
Or adding a menu button since many older apps don't always have a menu option on them anywhere and rely on that button.
I would love to swap the recents button with menu since I generally long press the home button for recents anyways but so far I can't seem to find an option to do so.
Can someone please help point me in the right direction? Thanks!
I just found this thread in search of the same solution. It seems like it's an Android level feature developers choose to include or not. My OnePlus one on 5.1 was the last time I've seen that menu, and I really want it back. It's so annoying to not be able to customize my buttons exactly how I like them, especially since that menu is something that's been in Android for so long. Feels like a step back.
Install All in one gestures app.
Don't be fooled by app's name, it does exactly what you ask and something more.
