Possible to add a full size menu button to ICS? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Is it possible to add a full size menu button much like the search button was added. I tried ICS on an older phone and the menu button seemed to work in even the native apps. I hate the look of the dot one that comes up in stock ics and with the mod to make it appear all the time. Ideal for me would be to make the button layout identical to my droid incredible. So home, menu, back, and search. Hold home down for the app switch. Hold menu for keyboard. Hold search for voice search. This has to be possible somehow since its all software keys now.

[Request] Take pictures with the side button?

I know development is kinda sparse here for the droid pro...but anyway someone can modify the camera.apk to allow the side button to work for taking pictures?
yea that would be kinda nice.
Ive got it set up now so that the single side button opens the camera, but it doesnt take pics
Had that feature on my old BB Tour before I switched to the Droid Pro. Really miss that feature. Don't miss much of anything else though.
I posted this on droidforums.net. works with stock GB camera as well as MIUI camera apk which i like a bit better.
I have been wanting to use the side button as a shutter button since I got the Droid Proand it can be done using Button Re-Mapper
You must be rooted to use this app so.... First go to settings>applications>Quick Launch and press/hold side button to clear the assigned app, this setting will no longer work once we remap the button. Open button remapper and scroll all the way to the bottom of the list and click on 246 (Side) and change it to Camera with Wake_Dropped state, apply changes and reboot. This way, along with No Lock app installed, your side button will now wake the phone. Once the phone is awake, press/hold the side button and it will bring up the camera. Now press the side button while the camera app is active and it will snap the pic. Yay.
The next coolest thing would be an app that can reprogram button actions the buttons are pressed/held like on BlackBerry. This would allow press/hold button shortcuts from homescreen without using the search soft key as we have to use now.
THANK YOU for posting this, should be made sticky in a mods page. ButtonRemapper http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=850464 and no lock from the matter go straight in my howto on this phone.
Another thing on my 3.8... verizon latest rom on settings, applications, quick launch you can do something similar to what you are saying pressing search + letter are keyboard shortcuts, like on BBs!
I'll also share that Toggle 2g/3g

works great and with widget it extends my battery even more.
Needs resigning of system apps on droid pro, be very careful and do things step by step adding pause in the batch file..
I added this comment http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=17626210&posted=1#post17626210 for procedure with droid pro.s
The app ROCKS!

How do the hard touch buttons work on ICS?

By that I mean, the E4GT has the four Gingerbread-based buttons always on the bottom--settings, home, back, and search. ICS only has three, IIRC, as the home and back got merged or something. And the icons changed.
My question is, what happens to the GB buttons on ICS roms, since the buttons themselves are stuck at the bottom of the phone? Do they retain their GB functionality or do they work like their ICS equivalents?
If Ice Cream Sandwich is installed on a device that makes use of physical navigation buttons, the on-screen navigation bar disappears and the hardware buttons are used. Long-pressing Home brings up multitasking, Menu brings up the options menu, etc.
(Copied from an ICS sticky in the GN forums)
No changes made on ICS. The same button works as same way as GB.
The behavior of the button has been changed a little but the same concept and same operation.
Depending on the launcher, it may work a little differently because the launcher actually control the buttons.
If any button does not work properly, please provide more details about it. We will check it out.
If you want the onscreen buttons, you will have to enable them by decompiling the framework.apk, then open /res/values/bools.xml, find "config_showNavigationBar" and set to true
It is set to false for all phones but the gnex

[Q] possible to remap hard keys?

Hi,
I use the menu key a whole lot more than multi task. How hard would it be to remap the multi task key to act like a menu key? Is it even possible?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
If the apps is according to the new ICS look, Holo I think the theme is called, then the menu button is on the top right of the screen.
Seems to me it would be a hassle to press a button on the bottom right and then move youre finger to the top right to actually use the menu.
On apps not yet fitted for ICS I can understand what u mean, however this problem should hopefully be almost gone within not too long.
Would love to remap the useless.most recent programs button to act as a google search button, much like a long press on menu on my s2 does...
There are several threads about this. Here is one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1480130
I just got my One X, so haven't tried anything myself.
But being able switch songs with the volume buttons while locked is what I'm looking for.
A must when you're outside in heavy rain or snow.

Remap the S3 hardware buttons?

Main thing is I want to make the left hardware button (defaults to menu) to be the BACK button. I hold the phone in my left hand and find it difficult to hit the back button one-handed. Having it on the left (which also makes more logical sense as its a back button and all) would make it perfect
Im running CM10 and I have remapped the menu button to be multitask however I dont see any option concerning the back button. Is there a mod I can apply to make this work?
Thanks all

Since you're running CM10, why don't you ask this question in the specific ROM thread? I don't know the answer to your specific question but with Task's AOKP ROM, I added a nav bar at the bottom of the screen (soft buttons) that allow me to configure the bar to whatever functions I want (to a certain extent).

U can get the zip and go to the keylayout folder in system and manually change it...

My apologies but didnt know there was a CM forum. Or do you mean the CM thread under Android Dev forum? Ill post in there if thats what you mean. Regarding the keys I didnt want to add the soft keys (similar to nexus products) to my screen if I could avoid as it will take screen real estate however would consider if this was the only option
Also howtomen, can you be more specific on which zip
Thanks
So I believe I figured this out. Had to go into /system/usr/keylayout/sec_touchkey.kl
Replacing
key 139 MENU
key 158 BACK
With:
key 139 BACK
key 158 MENU
After reboot it seems to work.

Can I customize the capacitive buttons with root? How?

I know there is the "buttons" menu in settings and it gives some options for which button does what and button swap but I want more!
Like, long press the back button to kill an app (useful for closing the web browser, for instance, instead of hitting back a billion times or menu - close)
Or adding a menu button since many older apps don't always have a menu option on them anywhere and rely on that button.
I would love to swap the recents button with menu since I generally long press the home button for recents anyways but so far I can't seem to find an option to do so.
Can someone please help point me in the right direction? Thanks!
I just found this thread in search of the same solution. It seems like it's an Android level feature developers choose to include or not. My OnePlus one on 5.1 was the last time I've seen that menu, and I really want it back. It's so annoying to not be able to customize my buttons exactly how I like them, especially since that menu is something that's been in Android for so long. Feels like a step back.
Install All in one gestures app.
Don't be fooled by app's name, it does exactly what you ask and something more.
