My phone randomly turns off when I'm not using it. (Like when I leave it too charge overnight or don't use it for a couple hours)
What could be the problem? How to fix this problem?
Thanks,
Benwaffle
are u rooted? have cwm installed? custom rom?
Rooted, ardatdat kernel, cwmr. Actually it didn't seem to happen last night, and I just installed the new kernel yesterday
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I927 using XDA
if it happens again after you changed the kernel, try a different rom and stay away from overclocking it and stuff. can't hurt to inspect your battery contacts if you spilled anything near it.
Turns off or locks? some people are getting it to lock it's called the sleep death and happens if you put your phone to charge at night with Wifi on. Some people try different Roms to fix this issue.
Hehe my phone doesn't sleepdeath...I charge it on with wifi...maybe it's different

That was a very helpful post.....Nah just kidding it doesn't happen to everyone. I have had my phone since December last year and I can count on 1 hand how many times it has happened to me. I always charge at night with WIFI on. But when it does happen I simply hold the power button till it reboots, so not a very big issue to me.
Reviving this thread because I'm having a similar problem...
Running on stock, rooted.
It happens often enough for it to be a problem.
Only concern is when I go to sleep and rely on my phone as an alarm clock. I need my phone to work
Please note last charge cycle on the attached screenshot. Battery was at 84% and completely dead after sleeping for 8 hours. It doesn't even show me how the phone died, or what made it die.
During the day, I think I have the same problem. My phone will simply not turn on at times. I have to do a battery pull before I can get the phone to turn on again.
Check the battery. Take it out and put it on a flat surface like wood or metal. Spin it like you would as a bottle, if it does that, then your battery is swollen and will cause problems like what you're experiencing. If that does happen, you need to replace the battery, as that is your only option. Sorry . It happened to me, but i was covered under warranty.

Battery looks fine. Not visually swollen and doesn't spin on a flat surface. Wish I had another battery to test this out...
I saw that you're using another rom. Did you wipe battery stats and cache before installing it? I remember with my DHD I didn't do that and it would die randomly here and there. After I reinstalled the rom, it was working alright.
Save your apps on TB and do a nandroid backup before doing it so you don't lose any data.
Also, try out the literom, it's basically stock without bloatware.

I've been running it on stock, just rooted.
I don't believe wiping battery stats will do much, considering they're wiped every time you charge to 100%. But the battery level is definitely off. I reboot my phone sometimes and end up going from 50% down to about 10%. It's not reporting accurately.
I will be installing a new rom over the coming weeks, just have no time right now. I just wanted to know if this seems to be a hardware problem or software.
Let me know how it goes. Sorry for the late response. I have been busy with school and work

I'm having this same issue with my Glide of 3 weeks. I remember having a similar problem several years ago - can't remember what phone it was - may have been the N900. I think that one was fixed by conditioning the battery. Where you drain it to 20% and then recharge several times. Does that technique sound familiar to anyone else?
I am stock GB/rooted and not opposed to flashing a new rom if that would help. Any suggestions on a minimal rom with working camera? (my one requirement)

Looks like it was a rom specific issue. More importantly, it was a battery drain. Something was causing my phone to hang and drain the battery overnight if I didn't leave it on charge. Not happening with CM10.1
Gingerbread on this phone has a lot more bugs than I normally like. I don't know how Samsung didn't catch these or found it ok to market the phone despite knowing these bugs exist. For example, stock music app periodically slows down and force closes for no reason.
My girlfriends phone is having this same issue after I re flashed the stock rom, rooted it, and installed twrp. Does anyone have any insight to this issue before she throws the phone against a wall?

Thank you! I was having this issue, and this helped me figure it out. My battery was definitely swollen, and after seeing this, I now notice it actually doesn't even sit flat in the battery compartment anymore. Luckily when I called AT+T they said it was still under warranty and sent me out a new battery with little hassle.

I've had 2 replacement phones in my 1st month of having a Gnex.
Just then I had a random turn off. Normal or not?? No rooting, no unlocking fully stock 4.0.2. Wtf?? I just thought yay!, everything is going to OK then bang. Not cool. Might be normal but I doubt it...
Thanks guys.

This happened to me last night.
I wasn't using the phone, it was just on the table charging.
Not sure what's up.
Do we have faulty units?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I guess it depends on how often it is happening.
I've had my phone for two months now and I believe this is the second time it happened.
As long as it doesn't happen too often and not during a ROM flash, I can live with it.
Yeah, that's the problem though isn't it. Random. It could be when your flashing a rom, or in a phone call. That'd be ****.
I dunno, why do these things happen?
Don't Google test things? Its not real stable is it. There should never be any problems if its a full release.

Nah not at all. Its happened twice since in had it. Once when the battery was at like 6% on its first run down of the battery when I got it. Then on it's first charge. It was at about 80% and I was just swiping left and right and I think bringing the notification drawer down (which doesn't work sometimes, I have another thread on that) and it just turned off. I pressed the power button a few times and it finally turned on with a 10% ish battery drop. That's it though, not again yet. May of been a battery conditioning thing.

My wife's Epic 4G was working fine yesterday but today it crashed and overheated pretty severely. When it was still plugged in and crashing it showed the battery charging and then it turned yellow and show a yellow warning triangle with a thermometer beside it, is the phone going to stop working on us?
I would appreciate a quick response so I can take it to Sprint and see what they can do about it.
I just factory reset it to insure that it wasn't a rogue application or what not and the phone is still running slow, not as bad as when it was crashing, but it still works so I don't know what's going on with it.
Also the phone is stock and has always been stock without root or any other type of hacking, etc.
It just stooped working perfectly one minute.
She showed me that the screen was blinking rapidly in an up and down bar fashion on the home screen and during applications.
First of all how old is the phone. My phone runs games hot all the time and never crashes (well sometimes, but usually when im not even doing anything with it).
I would think that the video is going out on it and it is rebooting. Depending on the age I think your phone is dead dude.
Cheers

Not a year yet, it'll be a year old in June or July. I'm hoping it was just a virus or something because its working now. Should I exchange it anyway?

Try flashing it back to stock or wipe the data if it isn't already rooted. I've never heard of anything of this sort... need some screenshots or something.

I already factory reset it and it's running right now as if it were just fine but what I'm wondering is if it's going to happen again and not work afterwards.
I'm thinking about taking it in to Sprint and exchanging it but I'm afraid there might be fees for exchanging or what not. The phone has been dropped multiple times but it never had any issues before.
The drop distance has been less then 2 feet every time.
No water damage to the phone itself but the Sprint tech said the battery's "water damage" indicator was activated and showing water damage.
The phone HAS been in the bathroom during multiple showers which might be the cause for the battery's damage indicator to go off but the phone, like I said, has never had any issues.
She downloads pretty much everything from the Market so I was suspecting viruses or malware and now it's "clean" it's running fine.
Any suggestions for where I should go from here?
The phone should be fine. This has happened to me a few times.... if your phone gets extremely hot it will refuse to charge as a safety feature and show that yellow triangle thing... open the back of the phone take the battery out and let it cool down.

I'm guessing that the overheating problem had to do with a buggy app that was running on the phone and took lots of data or cpu time. This has also been know to happen when running wifi hotspot apps.
Regardless, like everyone else said the phone went into thermal protection mode. The battery got hot and it wouldn't charge the battery until it cooled down.
Could be the screen being on and maybe running a governor such as "performance"? Also, I've left my phone under a pillow charging, woke up it was 110F and I haven't had this problem it mustve been really hot

THIS! ^^^ Without looking at your phone, I'm guessing this was the culprit. She had a buggy/defunct app that was probably frozen in the background while still sucking CPU/RAM. I've had a few of those instances and it DEFINITELY increases the temperature of the phone.
Only other thing I can think of is if she runs her phone at the brightest setting and has a long timeout on the screen timeout. Either way, I think it's nothing a little spring cleaning of the apps and tweaking couldn't take care of. Good luck buddy
Right so had my nexus for a while and its been through pretty much every ROM and kernel combo there is without a issue.
Recently though its been having a lot of issues.
1: the phone works fine until around 30-40% then the phone screen keeps unlocking no reason. Give it a reboot / battery pull to stop it and when i switch it back on there is 5% battery. No reason.
2:it constantly says its charging even when it isn't. And when the battery drop happens I switch to air plane mode to listen to my music on the way from work and the battery goes up around 5%.
Things I have done to try and cure this:
1:Wiped the phone and reflashed including cache , delvik, and battery stats. With no result.
2:thought it may be corrupted media. Wiped the phone totally and removed everything from it to start from scratch . Still no banana.
3: upgraded to jb with bixies ROM , in case it was the ROM. Still happens.
If anyone could point me on the right direction of what I have to do yo cure this problem that would be great. As its making my phone usable only until it reaches 50% which as you would agree is not ideal in anyone's world.
Thanks in advance j

Wow.. that is really weird well if that really is the root cause of the problem then I'd be amazed!
Hmm what about a replacement battery apk or something on those lines to reset all the battery stats and config. Really out of ideas what it is , ain't had this kind of problem before. Had most issues but this one is really odd and appears to not be fixable. I could unroot and send it back to Samsung but really CBA to do that and would rather try and fix it. Hmmm.....

Hi everyone, I am having an unusual problem. I was running re-calked fi29 and when I would be using my phone somewhere between 50-80% battery it would freeze and reset the phone (or I would have to remove the battery). Upon restarting, my battery will be less than 12% then will immediately shut off and won't restart until I put it on the charger (when I do it still shows battery above 50%>. I always flash el29 before flashing roms, reset battery stats, and caulkin format all. I switched to Phantom rom and I continue to have the issue. This is happening every day and has left me up **** Creek since I am on vacation and using maps. Any suggestions? Thanks.
Also, upon plunging the phone in, it works ok, doesn't crash

Is ur battery bulging out of the battery door?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
No to both questions.
Put your battery on a flat surface, smooth table, countertops, desk, etc and spin it, if it spins like a top its starting to bulge. The symptoms you're describing are those of a bad/bulging battery. Oddly enough it can be bulging but still test good in the machine at the repair center and they will do the spin test to confirm bulging and swap the battery out(as long as they have one in stock) even if it tests good. I've been having the same issue with mine and waiting for the corporate store to get some more batteries in so i can get mine swapped for free. If they don't get any soon I'm just gonna go the Samsung route and get it swapped thru them and just buy a cheap replacement to use while I wait for Samsung to receive my bad one and ship a new one out.
We are legion, for we are many.

Damn I'm having similar issues, but my phone will randomly reset without freezing. It usually happens when I'm in the middle of something on the phone too. I flashed 3 different roms, incase it was a rom incompatibility issue but no dice.
The battery thing is interesting though, I also carry a spare Samsung battery with me and the phone will still restart with either one in. Not sure what the issue is since this recently started happening.

Amazon will have OEM batteries. Be careful though, some will label them like OEM but they are fake. You will probably be able to get a new one from Sprint or Samsung, though.

I've had good luck with cheap eBay ones for $3-$5. (~$10 for 2 + external charger, shipped from China)
Originally bought a cheap 1800mAh for my Epic, but kept it around and am using in my E4GT (when the orinal battery "puffed" and wouldn't hold much of a charge) Recently added a "2200mAh" one and external charger. It's a tiny bit thicker than my 1800, but still fits under the stock cover. I havent noticed the "2200" giving any better battery life than the "1800" - both work well and I've had no problems.
This issue is happening to me too but seems to occur when I'm downloading something like an MMS or app, or even an image intensive webpage. The screen flashes to different brightness levels and then the battery would suddenly "drain" to zero, where the software tells me it's at zero, but with a little extra charge and a reboot, the power level will be where it was before shutting down.
And none of this occurs while plugged in so I'm reasonably sure it's an old battery, I'd just like some confirmation. What gave it away though? The flashing screen thing had preceded a loss of signal so at first (and for about a week or so) I thought that was what it was until I found this thread.

When I went to get a new battery, the guy pulled the battery out and spun it on the counter. If it spins, it's expanded, and indicative of being on its last leg or already dead. Of course, you could also palpate the battery and you will feel the bulge but the spin test is simpler, definitive, and more entertaining. Just posting in case someone else runs into this problem or a similar battery problem and come across this thread - try the battery spin test.
