Yes, gorilla glass can still break. Toughened glass is tough, but not unbreakable!

yes indeed
but it should be less breakable than the Galaxy S3... because One X uses the Gorilla Glass "1" and the S3 uses "2".. makers of Gorilla glass say, they're both even strong, but "2" is thinner, more chance to break you're screen on the S3
I once dropped my HTC Desire HD from 2m10 or something, nothing to see from the outside, screen also perfect... only 5 functions were broken inside sent for repair, free repair
I think you just was unlucky

They both use Gorilla 2, the advantage of the S3 is that is has a small lip around the screen absorbing any fall shock into the casing instead of directly into the glass as on the X. This is where you pay with functionality for getting aesthetics.

People don't believe it at the moment because GSMarena says so (because they're never wrong or biased or they?),
....
But it's just another inaccuracy they have about the HOX.

It has nothing to do with bias but with HTC not saying a word about Gorilla 2 before that single tweet. Editors aren't clairvoyant either.

So, they just made up an article because they didn't know, sounds about right - anything to put another pro for the galaxy, even if not true,
Same with camera, the direct comparisons I've seen show the HTC ONE X camera to be significantly better, but GSM disagree of course, instead they pictures that ain't even taken on the same day, the pictures don't match.
There are direct photos on the android central forum, and the HOX clearly gives better photos.
There is also this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MNRuw48ACNc&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Make your own mind up, but the comments speak for themselves, the HOX is superior.
The HOX has a f2.0 28mm lens with a dedicated image processing chip and multi-flash depending on proximity,
The SGS3 only has a f2.6 3.7mm (EXIF data) lens with no dedicated chip or multi-stage flash,
There is also massive discrepancies for the screen quality too, no way is a pentile Amoled display with lower ppi greater than the Super IPS LCD2 display, sure it would be for blacks, but that's where it stops to impress in comparision, colour reproduction, brightness and 'whites' are significantly better on the HOX screen.
Android central gave a TON of coverage from the event in London, videos, reviews & podcasts and over & over have stated the HOX screen to be better.

And they are still listing the Desire Z as having Gorilla Glass, even when I have direct confirmation from HTC through email that no Desire range has Gorilla Glass.
Being Gorilla Glass I or II will affect thickness. As per Corning's own words, From their own FAQ:
Gorilla Glass 2 can be up to 20 percent thinner than the original, but still just as tough.

Also, this article states that it is NOT Gorilla 2.

It's not "broke like a glass".
It broke because IT IS made of glass.
In case you don't know, glass breaks on impact often.
^ What he said, but to reiterate:
Super AMOLED is only the type of screen producing the images. It is then covered in protective glass, the same as used on the front of the iPhone 4 and most capacitive smartphones.
It doesn't matter whether it's LCD, SLCD, AMOLED or Super AMOLED, they are all then covered in glass with the capacitive touch surface in it. And yes, glass breaks when dropped.
So LCD, AMOLED, etc are the type of pixels used, NOT the type of glass protecting them.
For almost all phones it's wise to get a good case to protect your phone from falls. The new glass type used on the Galaxy S known as 'gorilla' glass simply makes it much harder to scratch, but it will still shatter if hit from the side.
Do they break often you ask.
I'm truly sorry to hear what happened to your phone, but your question would be the same as how often does one drop their phones?
This if borderline trolling imho...

Perhaps it's you who did something different to your SGS?
I've had mine for about one and a half month and has no scratches or anything on it. But sure, I haven't thrown it into the ground either.
I know I take a risk but I will live with it.
I never use a screen protector or a case and I have never damaged a single device I have had.
The phone lives in my pocket with nothing else just my flesh on one side and material on the other. You can't get safer then that.

Super Amoled is different from other screens so far. In Super Amoled, the touch sensor is integrated into the Amoled screen this means that the touch sensor is just 0.01mm thin and the glass panel on top of the Sgs is just to protect the Super Amoled underneath.
If you look closely, you can see that there is almost no gap at all between the Super Amoled and the glass panel, unlike on the motorola milestone, there was a huge air gap between the two.

same here, screen died of htc HD2 before i had any scratch or something, Galaxy S for one week and a screen long scratch.... bump
You could have any X device for Y days/months/years and that doesn't make the Galaxy any more or less scratch resistant. If it's scratched already, then usually it's the user's fault. They don't exactly scratch themselves.
I remember reapplying a new screen protector on my ipod once because of a few niggling air bubbles. The old one hadn't had any scratches after over a year's use. So I put the new one perfectly, and within the same day, I managed to somehow get a mad scratch on the new protector. It happens.
I have my Magic about 3 months. I don't use protector. I don't have any single mini scratch. Legend and hd2 have real glass on screen. You can find scratch test on youtube.

Thanks Guys for the update....
The SGS does not use gorilla glass, its just plain glass that can be easily scratched, for those not using any screen protectors try to use a bright light source like an LED flashlight and point it to your screen, you'ed be surprised at the amount of scratches it has.. the test vid above is unable to show it cause of the weak light source they used.
Ive had mine quite a while and im not really one for looking after phones and i havent got a mark on it yet
My phone is still unscratched too.
don't samsung own a large part of the company that makes gorilla glass? Or they are one of their clients
with lots of android phone in the market nowadays that i've used, i can safely say this SGS is the easiest to get scratch, screen and other parts (vs nexus one, desire, milestone, x10, wildfire, and err iphone 4 )
but still, not everything is perfect and i like SGS the most compared to other android phones. so i have no choice but to use some silly looking silicon case to protect the back cover and the front plastic chrome border.
What type of pants do you have?

Hi guys long time no speak,
I was just watching the video of that crazy Russian guy attacking a nail with his One X. On the article in which the video was embedded on the particular website I read it on, it was saying the Galaxy S III has Gorilla Glass 2, well I was just wondering does the One X have Gorilla Glass 2?
I have Googled it, however I was only able to find one source and despite it saying that we have Gorilla Glass 2 I was skeptical to believe. Thanks in advance!

Whatever they call the glass, I have read it scratches so I presume the video is fake. Just read a article a Asian guy tried the nail trick and it costed him 200$
One gentleman from Taiwan put his brand new $700 HTC One X to the test. According to the reports, this gentleman was intrigued by the youtube clip and decided to try the experiment for himself. He began by knocking the face of the screen against the knob of his stick shift in his car for about a dozen times. No problem. The Gorilla Glass is puffing his chest at this point and withstanding the punishment as advertised. But he probably should have stopped at that point. Reportedly, he then proceeded to replicate the hammer test for himself, but in this case, the face shatters within three knocks. The damage was a roughly $200 bill and a whole lot of regret. I would say he’s lucky damage was done only on the screen itself. Lesson learned.

Gorilla glass is only better and more resistant in certain circumstances, glass is glass after all and will break if hit correctly/hard enough.

Something similar happened to me. The day I got my phone I was cleaning the display and some of the cleaner leaked between the glass and the panel. It grew in to a big grey blob and started moving from the top of the phone to the bottom. It went completely away overnight. It just happened again a few days ago when I was putting a screen protector on. Same thing, moved from top to bottom and went away overnight. Hope your's does the same.
BTW, from the AT&T logo you're in the wrong forum. I'm guessing the displays act the same though.

The One XL (AT&T) display is made by Sony. Maybe it's different than the Acer and Sharp in the One X? The Gorilla Glass is laminated to the display and I'd guess that would be the same part regardless of who produced the panel itself. I wonder if yours is just the display part w/o the GG glass overlay? But then what's the moisture "blob" in between? Curious.

And that is my exact question, I just did some comparison with my shattered screen, the "blob" in the middle is exactly how its suppose to look like, I am guessing it is not firmly attached to lcd?

This actually makes me wonder, and as far as I once heard the designs on the at& the and the International one x may seem alike but as far as I am concerned there is a minimal design difference, but don't take my answer for 100% sure, but that's maybe a possibility. Correct me if I'm wrong.
A friend of mine just had his digitizer replaced after he smashed it and has the same issue as you. Looks like it's not bonded to the LCD properly, the screen flexes when pressed. He is sending it back for repair again.
This is why my One X repair is delayed.
I broke my One X screen over a month ago now. It's been at the repair centre for that long. The reason is that the market has been flooded with cheap, hand-made, screens that have this exact problem and they are waiting for proper screens to become available. The official screens are bonded using a machine - very few of these cheap ones are fault free.
Likewise, if you have the digitizer replaced by a 3rd party, the chances are that they will do it by hand, leading to this problem. Be careful where you send your One X for repair if you do not use HTC themselves.
Unusually glossy? Sure there isn't a protection film over it?

I think you're spot on. I'd imagine it would be almost impossible for knock-off screens to ever be produced as well as the originals based on this...
"The 4.7-inch 720p Super LCD 2 display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2, which is the new version that's thinner and stronger. We first saw the Gorilla Glass 2 back at CES 2012, though the glass manufacturer did not reveal then which handsets will be featuring the technology. HTC also told us that the One X features optical lamination, a process through which the screen ends up laminated to the glass, resulting in better viewing angles. We found this to be true, and having the screen so close to the glass makes it appear brighter and more visible under sunlight."
Isnt there any kind of liquid glue we can use to make the screen crack invisible ?
No. If you want a perfect screen replacement, suck it up and pay for the price of an out of warranty repair.

I put on a privacy screen and it looked great, the crack is hidden perfectly. Then I turned on my phone only to find out the image looked awful.
I havent found anyone happy with these 3rd party screen replacements. I am very sad, I love my phone but looking at a horrible crack makes me want to smash it against a wall.
From now on I am putting a heavy duty case on my phones.
I dont want to troll but my SGS2 had plenty of terrible falls including a 7 foot fall against a harsh Walmart parking lot. Not even a scratch. My hox was shattered for nothing

Hi,
Are you sure about oneV having gorilla glass. Nowhere I came across claims from HTC that One V has the proprietary gorilla glass display. Could it be just scratch-resistant glass of any other make? Please post some screenshots or images if you happen to have any.
Thanks
I'm pretty sure right now that One V doesn't have gorilla glass because I already have one scratch on the screen. It's 1,5 cm long and it's kinda micro deep, but it's visible under sunlight when the screen is off. I don't know how that happened because I don't carry keys and phone in the same pocket. I had wildfire for two years and never got that kind of scratch, which was dropped on the ground many times. Screen protector (foil) is a recommendation for One V. Sorry but I can't make a shot, don't have the camera on me.
HTC One V is not listed on Wikipedia: List Of Devices with Gorilla Glass Display or something..

Sincerely I don't know how much the customer care people know. But in a spec sheet that came along with the phone in the box it did not mention any gorilla glass but I was surprised to find GLONASS support listed. Well I am confused. :fingers-crossed:

I'm pretty sure right now that One V doesn't have gorilla glass because I already have one scratch on the screen. It's 1,5 cm long and it's kinda micro deep, but it's visible under sunlight when the screen is off. I don't know how that happened because I don't carry keys and phone in the same pocket. I had wildfire for two years and never got that kind of scratch, which was dropped on the ground many times. Screen protector (foil) is a recommendation for One V. Sorry but I can't make a shot, don't have the camera on me.

HTC One V does not have a gorilla glass protection. Check the official site to verify:

Well Hannan, that almost settled the discussion till I read the disclaimer by Corning on top of everything on that page which, i quote below
"Corning® Gorilla® Glass is used by more than 33 major brands, has been designed into more than 750 product models, and is featured on more than 750 million devices worldwide. Due to customer agreements, we cannot identify all devices that feature Gorilla Glass. Your favorite device may include Gorilla Glass, even if you don’t see it listed. Ask your manufacturer or retailer to learn more."
The confusion continues... I also feel that OneV does not come with gorilla glass. But it can be a scratch-resistant variety by some other manufacturer. If you see the list you will notice a prominent name missing and that's SONY (SONY ERICSSON) except for the bravia TV's. Sony do provide scratch resistant glass in some of its xperia models which I believe they call "scratch resistant mineral glass". Probably sourced from another supplier. Even then I have never seen OneV mentioned with scratch resistant glass anywhere.
We will keep looking....
ROFL... Big confusion is created here which is not yet confirmed by anyone.

Well, I did warn you guys that customer care people may not know anything. That just confirmed it. Doesn't even know that superLCD2 is a display type and not glass
Next time if someone make an attempt at support guys (No..not ROB again!!!) do ask them whether it has any type of scratch protection...
They should probably outsource their tech support section to xdaforum.. I have found hell a lot better support here (and people as well).. Thanks guys.
TFT Touch Screen. What kind of glass it is? Its the 1st time i heard of it.

True, but HTC has no reason to ask Corning to not identify One V when they've already identified One X and S and others. One V glass is very 'scratch friendly'. I have an ungainly small, surface scratch in the middle of my screen which glows against white background; seriously its such a small, insignificant scratch but when the screen is white, it shines in full glory. Also many other small scratches despite the fact that I don't carry it in my pocket and do my best to avoid scratches (no screen protection... don't like the feel of them)

Hey, did you read my entire statement? Below that I said - I do not think One V comes with gorilla glass (I just hope it did). And further down the thread it is sort of understood that oneV do not have a CG glass. But there was a remote possibility that it may have come with some scratch resistant glass (not corning's). But from your scratch I think it is not. Better use screen protectors and opt for a glossy type. It will look exactly like the screen unlike a Matte finish one.

So, after seeing questions on the XDA forums and over at Reddit asking about this, i pitched the idea to Weston over @slickwraps and he immediately replied with some interest and sent out some samples to me for testing.
I believe he said this material is 99.5% optically clear so I set out to take a couple test shots before and after to see if they reduced the quality of the images any.
On to the pics.
How they arrive
WITHOUT Lense Protector
bamboo android without protector
bamboo android WITH protector
Bowling Champ! without protector
Bowling Champ! WITH protector
as you can see, the quality is consistent between all images...nothing you are going to notice with every day use.
Fit of the product was spot on, Installation was a breeze. the protector could be a little thicker so the camera "ring" isn't touching the surface, but I'm pretty sure that would hinder the clearity. as it sits, the protector is right about level with the metal camera ring.
overall I am pleased, and like the title says, Weston just wanted me to Gauge interest for the product. No word on pricing or anything, just trying to get the word out on these and see if it would be worth it for SW to start mass producing them.
let me know what you think! also any comments/criticism are welcome.
I would possibly be interested in this. Depends on pricing. I can just see the lens cover getting scratched up easily without something protecting it leaving you with sub par pictures, not that it takes great pictures to begin with.
unless there like 2 bucks with shipping i dont see why anyone wouldn't just get a full phone case. with one the camera is so where near touching any surface.
A protector for your camera lens is pointless as most, if not all, high end phones use sapphire glass which has a 9H rating and much stronger than the glass on your display. The only thing that can scratch it is a diamond and given the amount of pressure it would take to break it, your phone would get crushed before it does.

Does the N5 have sapphire glass though? Haven't checked myself but I hear people like you saying most high end phones have it....then others saying they wished the N5 did have it.

It'd depend on how it attached, but I might be interested in this kind of thing. I'd much rather have my keys nick this than the lens proper.

I don't always do everything correctly, and the day I'm carrying a second set or have my hands full and forget what is where needn't be a day that i nick a lens.
In fact, the not doing it right every time is why I bought this phone. Very hard to brick a device when you have full manufacturer's images!
I'd probably try those. I'd prefer a case that had a lens cap built in but I can't find any like that. I'd just be concerned that the lens protector would degrade quickly and affect picture quality, bu your example photos look pretty good.

I am also concerned with how it would hold up, but I am assuming this is very similar to the material screen protectors are made out of... Which is pretty good usually needing to be replaced every 6 months or so max.
I have been really abusing it just to see how it holds up (trying to scratch it with a button, constantly wiping it down (not necessary its just a habit...finger prints don't show up as much with it installed) with my cotton shirt and it still looks great.
But like I said, Weston is shipping me some more of a different material so we'll see how those work out

Extremeguard selling the back protector with it, kind of, you just need to trim that piece a little
I'll buy some. It's not about whether the camera is made of sapphire or not, it's about me trying to protect my phone against the perils of my daily life haha. Though I take care of then phone as it is, a simple protector like that is one more layer of added protection. Just in case I do something stupid to it

Nexus 5 does not have any corning gorilla glass or any glass that is 9H for the camera, I could be wrong but it isn't specified on the specs such as the iPhone 5C having that sapphire lens cover to prevent scratchings.
I actually still have the lens protector that came with the phone and never removed it, cause it's so hard when I tried. But pics look great nevertheless.

If anything else you can replace it by removing the back cover and unscrewing the top half its a complete assembly
Here it is: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-To...er_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item1c3c3e8403
if anything else, LG Quoted me 25$ to get it replaced including shipping and everything

The lens protector that came with the phone doesn't actually cover the lens. It is a 2D donut and has a hole punched out in the middle where the lens opening is. At least, that was the case for mine.

Yes and it would be great if @slickwraps does exactly the same with their design, i mean punching a hole in the middle. In that case the quality of the photos won't be affected either.
