I appreciate the help.
What happens if I need to return to complete stock? Is there a situation (brick, etc) that my mac would not be able to work correctly with my phone?

I think heimdall will work fine... in not too sure though. You may have to find a windows machine and use Odin. Otherwise dual boot Linux and use heimdall... i remember reading somewhere heimdall was broken for Mac osx.

you should be able to do everything through fastboot, correct?

No worries. I've used my Macbook consistently to do exactly what you want, that is: rooting my Galaxy Nexus (GSM) and it works fine.
I'm familiar with using a terminal, so I actually feel safer executing each command by hand, as I know what's actually happening. If you haven't used a terminal before, or if you're unsure about anything or just curious, post whatever questions you have and I'll give you my best answer.
As to return to stock, it's not a problem. Google has made all the factory images (stock) available here. They're probably not the same as you've got on your Sprint at the moment, as the carriers usually brand their phones with their own versions. These are pure from Google though. Better, I reckon.

So I am coming from a rooted and heavily flashed Sensation, we had several ROM's, and I tried them all. I know this phone is very new and the Devs haven't even begun with this device, but so far I don't see really any reason to root? Are there at least any cool tweaks I am missing? Again, I know it's all coming, but am I missing something super cool we can do on a rooted SGS2 yet? I want to join the fun, but I don't see much to get excited about (yet).
The roms the are out are well worth rooting for

Couldn't agree more. Just the ability to back up your device should be reason enough alone to root. A better question is why would you not!

you will need root, to gain full access to Titanium Backup, which is the #1 must have tool for migrating from one phone to another phone
right now i would say the roms, the beastrom i got is amazing, better battery life and data speeds!
The main reason I rooted was to get rid of all the bloat.

And again, why wouldn't you root? All it does is give you complete access to your phone. Whether you use that access or not is up to you, but there's no good reason not to have it. You can always unroot if you need to return your phone and use your warranty.
Rooting and installing the EaglesBlood ROM has more than doubled my battery life.
If that's not enough reason to root, I don't know what is.
What about the portable hot spot without fee thats a big one!
Replacing the standard Gmail apk (the one found on the market) and putting this modified apk (found here):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16263121
In its place, which releases the power of Gmail unread count Widgets and launchers.
You need root to manually replace the Gmail.apk within /system/app/ folder with the modified version.
Oh yeah... also the ability to nandroid backup.

I rooted to remove bloat and to install TB, adblocker, terminal and cwm. I'm still on stock and don't see a need to flash roms now cuz everything working great. I'm holding out for ICS which you will need root for if you want it early.

That seems like a good idea. I honestly can't complain with stock right now and would like to wait until something besides an ODIN root comes out.

Seemed pretty easy and straightforward to me. Much easier than rooting my G2. Had a little hiccup trying to put it in d/l mode since this was my first time using odin, but figured it out fast enough. Just turn off your phone, plug in your usb, and then turn it on while holding vol up and vol down at the same time. Should go into d/l mode instead of recovery.

after rooting it you can delete the thethering manager app.apk from the sytem/app so you can use your built in wifi thether for free yo.
I would do it for the ability to fully use titanium backup and to have full access to your phone.
I did it for those reasons alone. Im not a rom jumper and I stick to stock and unless a rom way different than stock comes, I'll stick to stock.

Of all the T-Mobile phones I've used this seems to have the most bloatware....rooting definitely helps getting rid of all of it. Dev support also seems to be growing. Ok, here's the deal. Let me start off by saying that I am no idiot, I have been a tech for 15 years and this is the first phone that I've had a problem with.
I have an incredible that I want to root then flash to metroPCS. I first tried unrevoked and it said that my firmware was too new. So I figured I would try to downgrade my bootloader after googling the error. I tried literally every set of directions that I could find.
If anyone could help me I would appreciate it.

I can only help you root your phone, I don't know anything about flashing to another carrier. What is your phone setup android version, etc?
If you are on Gingerbread (2.3.4) then you can follow this thread by Scotty1223. It is the only way to root Gingerbread that I know of for the Incredible.

No offense, but 15 years does not mean you know everything.
I explained that I routed three phones, and unrevoked said the same thing at first.
You have to read the entire document and then do all the steps that are like 5, then run the unrevoked that is the last.
The document is attached in Word.
Kinda new to the xda still trying to figure out rules. Kudos to the synergy guys tried a couple different roms and I'm addicted to this rom and is features. Just flanged the r484 and am support happy the mms issue wad fixed. Multi Window flawless. No problems with cameras. The only thing I have had issues with is reception 4g/3g. It seemed more stable with r433. Using ziggy and used custom install with pre selected synergy recs. If this post is on the wrong spot mod please fix. Have you tried changing your modem ? Or going to a different ROM and updating prl and profile ?

Changing modem? Haven't heard that one yet. If you could elaborate on that one that would help. As for prl and profile I'll try that but I didn't have the issue with the previous build. Should I just try flashing stock and update? Then reflash. My area hasn't changed. Stock and previous r434 build I had very constant and strong 4g everywhere. With the r484 it can't make up its mind between 3g/4g. Thanks Daniel for the info

You change your modem through Odin. Been a while since I've done it (on HTC for a while there when my Epic broke it's charge port) but as I recall you put the phone in download mode, put them modem in the 'Phone' field after downloading it to your computer, and fire away. Do check the instructions first, I'm going off of memory from six months ago.... Some radios work better with some phones than others. Depends on your device.

I know right. I hate how the only way to root the newer HTC devices is by doing sketchy wire tricks.
Dunno about the ET4G, but my Epic was fairly easy to root. But the GS3 was much easier. My wife's Photon Q was about the same as the GS3.
I had an HTC but never played with it due to watching a friend ruin multiples of them. So I never attempted. Had my gs3 for three days before I rooted and started modding. For never doing this before and having mediocre comp skills this was fairly simple. Just want to make sure I cover my bases before doing something wrong.

Hello,
I'm wondering whether I should root my nexus 7 and try out all the cool ROMs. The only thing that's stopping me is that I'm going to lose the warranty. I remember before with my old Samsung I could simply restore the stock room and take it to the warranty shop, but that was a while ago and I've read about flash counters on new devices, that can show if you've rooted and changed the ROM. Does the nexus have that? Has anyone used their warranty after rooting and changing ROMs?

I am interested in that too. I plan to root and download a ROM to my Nexus 7 so that I can make phone calls, but I do not want to brick it, and if it does not work as a phone I would like to return it.
I am almost certain Google and ASUS are not so stupid that they would piss off their customers with an eFuse. Even if I can understand the rationale behind Samsung's Knox flag I hate it. Actually I was about to buy the Note 3 but chose Nexus 7 instead because of Knox.
So go on and root your N7, it's a great device.
No flash counter, and you have to try very hard to brick this device so you shouldn't have warranty claims due to flashing ROMs. If you have a warranty claim due to another issue it is quick to return to stock if you are worried, but you shouldn't be, nexus devices are made with developers in mind

OK, my Nexus is still wrapped in the original cover and boxed in the original box. I am planning to return it because I thought I could make phone calls with it, but I cannot. In another thread someone said that if I "root" it and then install a new ROM then I will be able to make phone calls. His words

Cyanogenmod is a custom ROM, Google it and you will find the official webpage with list of supported devices and links to latest version, as well as installation instructions. Bear in mind however that the nexus 7 is not meant to be a phone, and assuming you get it to work that way, won't make it good or comfortable to use.
If you do return it, after rooting it, please let me know how it went - did the shop find out that you have rooted and changed ROMs, after you changed back to stock.
In the development section of the nexus 7 forum you'll probably be able to find info on how to get back to stock.

Edit: Update: I have installed CM a nightly build. It comes with 20 applications of which one is "Messaging". I have sent and received messages! Fantastic.
Unfortunately, there is no "dialer" app! Arghh! Why not ?!

Well I have sent it back - am not sure what happens next, they may refund me or they may perform a thorough check and discover that it had a couple of ROMs installed prior. Even so I am not sure if it says anywhere that installing a couple of ROMs, or applications, or basically using the tablet somehow invalidates your right for refund if it is faulty. Imagine if you bought a laptop which was faulty and when you gave it back have the sales people argue "oh but you have installed linux" or "oh but you have run Word too many times" - I mean honestly.

I haven't seen an Android device manufacturer whose warranty covers rooted devices. I know it's stupid, but that's just the way things are. Question now is - can they find out if the device has been rooted after you have returned it back to stock condition?
If you get a refund it would mean that they don't have a way of finding out whether the device has been flashed or not.

Or it may mean they did not perform a thorough test to find out, every shop and every assistant are different.
Just to clarify on thing here: The Nexus 7 LTE ca NOT make phone calls, no mater what rom you put on it as it does not have the hardware to do it. This is all part of keeping the price of the device down.. But hey. I Use SIP App all day long with NO problem to use it to call with!! I dont get why everyone HAVE to call with the GSM network when SIP is just as easy and cheaper.
First I'd like to thank all of the developers who take the time to develop all the custom ROMS to make our phones fun.
My question I have is I just flashed the C-RoM v6.5 ROM on my Galaxy S3 SGH-T999N. The ROM works great, but I connected my phone to my laptop to use kies3 and it said my phone wasn't compatible with kies3. It was before, so I started looking at the settings and everything looked good except I saw the it wasn't a SGH-T999N anymore but a T999. Is it supposed to be like that when you flash this ROM? Also would that cause the phone to not be compatible with kies3? I really like this ROM and I don't want to go back to the stock ROM. I don't care about it saying T999, but I do want to be able to use kies3. Any and all help is greatly appreciated…
Jeremy
Anyone have any idea about this? I just want to be able to backup my stuff on kies, without loosing this ROM...it had a OTA update to v.6.6, which I did. I'm going to check if that fixed the issues with kies, but it still shows the phone as a T999, which doesn't bother me unless it's what's causing the issues with kies. Please any info will be helpful. I'm not a noob at rooting or flashing ROMs, but I'm definitely not a developer.

IMO there are much better alternatives for backing things up, depending on what it is you want backed up exactly. Search the play store for root backup and it should give you some options.

Titanium Backup is by far the most popular, I use it and love it! There are other similar ones out there but TiB has always been flawless for me. Plus it has some other powerful features that I really like. For my personal data (int/ext sd cards) I use FTP Server by Peter Pareit. It is a small simple tool that lets me copy files wirelessly to my computer. It used to give me root access, but not anymore, so I may start looking for something else in the near future.
If you use cloud backup services, there are also lots of apps for those. I rarely to never use it myself so can't say what's good there.
