Anyone out there disassembled the nexus yet?

How terribly difficult is it to remove the screen from housing? I've got some experience with disassembling electronics and what not but very nervous. I'm looking to remove just the housing to make it white. Just wondering how much prying does it take.

I would imagine removing the glass is a lot like the galaxy s2. I used a good blow dryer, warmed up the screen (from the front) around it's edges, ran a guitar pick around it and pull it off with a good suction cup. I haven't taken my nexus apart yet, and probably won't unless I drop it in water or something else horrific happens to it.
Like a lot of smart phones, it's usually the screen that's the trickiest to remove. I don't mess with the glass unless I have to.

now I'm wondering if the phone in that video was already disassembled before...if its that easy, my nexus will be white asap! No harm in pulling the screws and seeing if it budges I guess

Crack in sgs2 benzel !!

Guys
I observed that there is a crack in the benzel of my sgs2. Benzel i mean The plastic lining that wraps around the front glass.
The crack is near the volume buttons.
How easy it is to replace this plastic strip ? Is it risky ?

Pretty sure you mean bezel, not benzel.
You would probably have to replace the entire housing which is quite risky to do in my opinion. If you don't know what you are doing you could short the board or break something.

Happend to me too. Seems like that part is very fragile.
I think the only way you can replace it is replacing the whole screen and touch panel.
After that one little crack and that mysterious burn mark right next to it (damn alcohol ) i finally decided to buy a case

Its not so bad. But there is an another minor crack on the exactly other side of the benzel where power button is present !
Is it because of overheat ? I use my phone while charging and battery temps are at 46 celcius when I do that.
I never dropped my phone.
If I go for a new benzel then will I have to pay for new screen too ? Is the benzel glued to the screen ?

Buying a case is not an option for me. I nvr dropped my phone. I use it very carefully , I love my sgs2.

You can probably have it replaced at an official Samsung repair center. I'm pretty sure they carry one or two sets -- or can order one for you -- but it'll probably set you back a little.

I am not sure about this. But looking at the screen replacement tutorial (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1253969) it seems like screen+touchpanel+bezel is a single part. I guess it is somehow glued together. But again, that is just a guess.

just put a little glue in the crack

went to samsung service center.
They said they will replace the Glass panel, Pled screen and benzel.
Oh what the hell, I'll get a new Oled screen. Will go for SGS4 directly

yeah I noticed a crack on my bezel above the volume button. You can kind of see it on the enclosed picture.

I've got a crack in almost exactly the same place as the above pic, slightly closer to the top of the volume button.
Mine has been in an official flip case since day one and has never been dropped. I only noticed the crack when I looked after reading this thread (just like the plastic cover over the home button thread!).
I wouldn't have noticed the crack because of the case. So, is this a design fault? Is it heat or flex that is causing the crack?

The benzel is the most fragile part I think.
I must be because of heat. As the processor, gpu and antenna are near camera module. The top portion gets a lot hotter when accessing 3G.
On top of that if any pressure you put on it going to worsen it. Putting it in a tight jeans and then when u try to remove it out of pocket, u tend to grab the benzel a lot.
All in all, I would go for a metal/polycorbonate benzel in my next phone. That disqualifies SGS3.
Obviously I dont want to pay a hell lot of amount just to get a thin plastic strip (benzel) to be replaced.
Just because samsung did stupid move to glue them together and chose a cheap plastic for benzel I now have to pay a lot.
Waiting for HTC One XL(unibody) with S4 chipset. At least it would come for 3 yrs rather than breaking within 11 Months.
End of rant. Sh**ty cheap plastic Samsung.

i kept the device with that crack but i worried about it

Incredible! Saw this thread and wondered what the hell a 'benzel' was. After reading that it had happened to more people, I just checked my phone and it has the same crack.
Had never noticed this until now. Fortunately mine is a black phone, so not as noticeable as the white.

the phone isnt exactly broke though is it?? a part of the phone could have been designed better maybe but it isnt broke and doesnt stop he phone from working its also very hardly noticeable
ive had one sgs2 for around a year now and used it hard and it works great

also the bezel scratches easy is there any point in replacing it when you could pay to have it fixed then drop the phone or scratch it against something??

CDMA screens on a GSM Nexus, don't do it

Hey all, I just replaced the screen on my GSM nexus with a CDMA screen. Didn't find much good information on this so I'm just putting this up for future reference.
The gist:
The GSM pcb will not fit well onto the CDMA screen back. I recommend not trying this screen transplant.
A bit more:
I just completed this. I bought a CDMA screen because all of the GSM screens were shipping from Asia and I was in a hurry to get my phone up and running. The screens are compatible of course, you can easily take off the pcb which is just glued down and plug into the CDMA screen. The big problem comes from the way the aluminum is molded. You'll have a bunch of moldings (plastic and aluminum) that get in they way of the parts on the pcb. Also, the screw alignments are not the same. One screw is almost an inch of while another is slightly shifted. The other thing to note is that the CDMA Gnex is ~0.5mm thicker than the GSM. Right now my glass slightly sticks out from the case. Feels like an iPhone. Err.. I mean I hear that's how iPhones feel like :angel:
Took lots and lots of dremeling to get everything working but it's good now. Besides the raised screen the swap is unnoticeable. Probably could get it seated perfectly if I take off some more of the backing, but I'm done messing with it. I highly highly do not recommend doing this, just wait for the long shipping

Is gsm screen able to fit on a cdma phone? thinking about getting one of the cheap 20 screen from asia?

Not sure how it was dumb idea..While I can see some radio SMC differences between CDMA and GSM who would think a screen would be different? Thanks for giving it a shot and letting us know for future reference. Most likely saved some people $$ and anguish.

I bought the screen from ebay for $180 from a guy in a nearby city. He says he does returns and I saw some mention around the interwebs that MAYBE the screens were compatible. So I gave it a try.
It is not compatible. I'll put up some pics later. Lots of issues including: miss-aligned screws, the side PCBs are different widths and the case is molded to fit their respective model, vibrator motor in the GSM is HUGE, CDMA has a lot more metal (unnecessarily so, I took the liberty of doing weight reductions wherever I could), and many many more.
But, lemme try to save some face I have my wedding in a week, so I needed my phone up ASAP. I have a few nexus S phones from work but ... once you go Jelly Bean on the gnex theres no going back, dammit!!!!! When I received the screen and opened up my gnex it was obviously not gonna fit. Rather than sending back the screen (minus the shipping cost), I decided to do the modification for fun, it's probably the most expensive/high tech/tiny thing I ever cut into. My gnex was free anyway, so I wasnt too afraid of messing it up and I was feeling pretty confident at the start (as guys usually do I guess). Fun project, but i wouldn't do it again. It took like 4 hours to get everything to seat properly and seal up all the shorts I introduced from exposing the aluminum to the pcb. YIKES!

From my experience, GSM screen onto a CDMA phone would of been an easier project. That being said, DONT DO IT!!! Just get the screen made for you phone model. It is ridiculously easy to replace the screen that way. Kudos to samsung for not caging up this phone.

Well I bought a cracked nexus 100 bucks and I was gonna fix it then I realized it cost 100 dollars apart and I saw the cheap screens on ebay for 20 dollars in china. I thought I might give it a shot and see if it works so cheap is not much downside

If it would work, it'll take some serious modding. If you have to have to have to do it then I'd recommend buying a replacement GSM case, possibly the white ones for $10, so that the tabs will mate properly to the screen. In this way you're pretty much just keeping only the pcb and battery.

You can find great tear downs online. Some of the issues are highlighted in the pic:
Red box (cdma) - side pcbs are different widths.
blue box (gsm) - vibration motor is pretty big in the gsm and has a big notch in the metal
green circles (both) - screws are in different places (tabs for plastics are too!)
yellow box (cdma) - the pcb shape down there is slightly different, had to pretty much flatten the area
red arrows (cdma) - These borders were in the way of my GSM components (sim card bay, etc). pretty much flattened this entire top area.
Also notice that there are a lot of connects/components visible on this surface that you're cutting on. Batteries are also different in all 3 dimensions. AND MORE!

I think I saw the "screen" you're looking at. If I'm right then that is only the front glass panel of the screen assembly. I cracked my old one for you to demonstrate:

The left side is what is listed on that ebay. In my situation, both glass and screen were broken and needed to be replaced. I didn't impact my phone, it bended. If your display is still working then maybe you can get away with just replacing the glass. On that note,the glass was just glued on along its black border. I just wildly cracked the thing open by sliding a screw driver into the notches at the bottom (and back) of the screen. This scratched the black paint on the border, but you could use a plastic tool or probably just touch up the paint scratches after. I would be afraid to get dust particles trapped in between the layers

I really yanked the sucker apart. You can notice some of the bits of each half on the other. The glue in the phone is really soft and pliable. You can probably take it off without much damage really slowly. Even better, apply a small amount of heat to soften it up. While I was dremeling on the back side of the screen, the heat would noticeably dissipate through the front side. My screen wasnt damaged from this, so it seems it can take a bit of heat.

I'm not brave enough to try this and if it fails I will have to shell out 200 bucks for the whole assembly....

Crap sorry for the delay, hope your project is goin well if you already started it. The screen under neat is really fragile, but it looks like you can slowly and carefully separate the glass from the screen with a thin, and preferable long, plastic tool. But I pulled them apart quiet violently, some of the screen was stuck onto the glass as a result. You can see int he pick below that the glass goes inter the phone frame a little. You should try to get your tool into that area so you can make sure that the glass wont pull the screen with it. Also, there is a middle layer that is double sided adhesive that doesn't touch the screen, I recommend separating this layer from the glass (leaving it on the screen half). Here's some picks:
Heat shouldnt be necessary to remove the glass, just an idea.
If you want we can arrange shipping my old screen to you so you can dissect it yourself I'm in southern California FYI.
Quick edit! I forgot to mention, the glass (and probably the screen) dont seem to take bend forces well. So try not to peel them apart. Just slide your tool all around the outside until the glass is off the sticker. There was some glass popping and breaking when I yanked them apart (though the glass was already weak from being shattered to begin with). Just be really slow do you don't take bits of the screen off with the glass.

It's possible to separate them, but nearly impossible to make it look good when putting it back.

So basically you can change ONLY the glass IF the screen is fine right? And carefully doing it will work even without heat right? So CAN YOU BUY ONLY THE GLASS FROM AMAZON?

I9250 glass on i515?

I was not a happy camper when I dropped my phone at work this morning and shattered the glass around the front speaker on my vzw gnex. Digitizer and led display are fine, so I'm looking to buy a new glass panel for it. Unfortunately, all the panels I see on ebay except for two are for the gsm one, not the cdma one. I know the battery door won't fit between the two, but the glass should, right? In the pictures everything looks to be in exactly the same spot. The two for the i515 are considerably more expensive than the i9250,which is why I ask.
For the record, I did pretty good; I got my first gameboy color at 6 or 7,and being just a few months away from 21 now, this is the first mobile handheld device that I've ever broken a screen on.

I remember reading on here somewhere that a person tried this and ran into all sorts of problems getting it to fit correctly. I tried searching but couldn't find the post. I would personally just recommend paying more for the i515 glass and knowing that everything will fit alright, rather than taking a chance on throwing your money away.

A user was able to replace the i9250 screen with the i515 screen, but from the post, it said he ran into a whole bunch of problems and that if you don't know what you're doing, you shouldn't waste your time.
I would just play it safe and buy the screen that goes with the phone, unless you really want to save money and try it out, but you might waste money if you damage the screen during the process.

Are we talking about the glass or the whole display? It makes a big difference. Assuming all 3 displays are the same (i9250, L700, I515), the problem is separating the display from the frame plate. Its very difficult and you can crack it very, very easily if you try to remove it. The cheaper GN LCD's on eBay are from working units and those already have the frame plate attached to it. The only way to remove it is to use a heat gun and apply it on the top and bottom front areas (as well as the sides). The apply heat to the back frame plate to loosen up the adhesive in the mid section of the screen. Then, slowly and I mean very, very slowly try to pry it open using a thin blade. Start from the top and work your way down. You should stop if you meet too much resistance and reapply heat. Like I said its a pain in the ass and not for the timid. I got to successfully remove an LCD from a frame for a Galaxy S (i500) not too long ago, its a similar in process as the GNex
I also tried to remove a L700 LCD (cracked glass) from a frame a while back and cracked it even more. I know what I did wrong and I think I wont make that mistake again. My mistake was that I did not know the exact location of the adhesive and applied too much heat in the front. Another mistake was that I thought I could remove the front glass from the digitizer. Now I know this is almost impossible and I don't know how people can buy front lenses without using some type of special tools (a true hot air bga station for instance) or a technique that I'm not aware of.
So, that's my long rant right there. I would really appreciate if any of you can confirm that any all 3 displays are the same (i9250, l700, i515). If it is then I would dare to try it out and take some pictures in the process if all goes well.

What about the oven?
I used to be into cars, and it was popular to smoke the headlamps on Nissans. They also have a lot of glue in them, and it was recommended to put em in an oven lol.
I'm sure it would get hot enough to loosen the screen, but 400 degrees may break something else in the process...

You can't use the i9250 screen on the i515. The battery metal thingies and the vibration thing are in different places.

I have asked a bunch of eBay sellers for the last few days and have gotten mixed responses... I don't think that most of them get that I am talking about separating the display from the front case/plate. One guy told me that the digitizer/LCD combo is interchangeable from the i515 and i9250, but it won't work on the L700. One guy told me that he thought that the entire assembly including the front plate were the same between the L700 and i515. Several have said that they are model specific, but I don't think that most of them realized that I am not expecting to use the front plate from an L700 if i9250 on the i515...
It doesn't seem like Samsung would have a different display for each model. I can see the plates and cases being different because some of the other parts are different, but it seems like the LCD panel and the glass should be the same for each model. To me all of the screen connectors look the same from the pics I've seen...

I remember reading on here somewhere that a person tried this and ran into all sorts of problems getting it to fit correctly. I tried searching but couldn't find the post.

Finally found the post that you are referring to (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1780491). Sounds like he ran into problems because he tried to use the i515's front housing on the i9250. I think if he had removed the screen from the frame and re-used the frame that was original to his phone he would have been fine. It looks like it takes some heat and care to do that, but it looks do able.
I am ordering a L700 screen today and will report back on how it goes installing on my i515.

I have GT-I9250 phone and only that glass is broken. Touch and screen is fine. So if I bought this kit: http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Outer-F...AU_MobilePhoneAccessories&hash=item5d371a5630
It's possible to change that glass or should i bought hole set? Digitizer+front cover + glass?

I had a good LCD with broken glass that I was hoping to only replace the glass on and I ended up getting impatient and breaking the LCD. The glass is very difficult to get off. I tried heating it up and using fishing lines to separate the glass from the LCD, but I could not get very far. The glue seems to be spread over the entire surface and it does not take much prying to break the LCD.
Incidentally if the glass is shattered pretty badly you might have better luck than I did. I was able to get the broken "shards" off by heating up the screen and gently prying them off. Where I had trouble was the large section of unbroken glass. I tried to crack that glass to be able to continue to remove the shards, but I ended up breaking the LCD as well.
If you can't use the screen with the broken glass you might give it a go as you aren't really losing anything if you break it.

Ok guys, just wanted to confirm that front glass for the L700 and GT-i9250 the same. And I assume that i515 as well.
I got for repair Nexus Sprint (L700) with cracked front glass but then was surprised that glass for L700 on ebay about $15 and the same glass for i9250 less then $10. Not big deal but anyway.. So I bought the glass for i9250 and it fits great as original.

Replacing just the glass

I shattered my screen a few weeks ago and had great results replacing just the glass, not the digitizer, however I have a small problem. I didn't realize the adhesive was still on the LCD, I kind of ruined it along the left side of my phone, it doesn't stick properly, kind of looks like a bad screen protector. I have to keep pushing it down to get rid of the haze. What I'm wondering is, can I remove the adhesive all together and just replace the sticker bit along the border of the glass, so there's no adhesive between the glass and LCD without it affecting the performance of the touch screen? It works great as is, the haze is just annoying me.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, I'd hate to do it and lose the ability to use my phone

My English is not my native language, but considering the word adhesive, you must referring to the double side tape part that holds the digitizer and the glass together.
Assuming that, from my own experience it is a no-go. If you are experiencing sticking parts (ie. it's not properly glued) I am afraid you might have to replace the whole adhesive.
I had the same issue on my Desire HD and about 1 month after replacement, same as you kept pushing it to take the haze away, the inevitable happened. A tiny opening not being able to see with the naked eye, left enough room for dust to enter under the glass. One month later, there was so much dust in it that I had to buy a new full screen.
However, months later, I tried some old trick for future experiments You can eventually take a paint dryer, and try to heat up the lose part then applying some light pressure onit. This process should make the glue on the adhesive very soft and with a bit of luck it might stick on the glass.
I'd say perhaps 60-70 degrees. Don't worry, even 100 degrees won't break your screen unless u're heating it up for more than 10 minutes or so

Fantastic, I'll give heat a try to get it to stick. Unfortunately I can't find the double sided tape anywhere otherwise I'd replace it. I'm in Australia so shipping is pretty expensive from most places outside of the country. I really appreciate the reply
I bought the glass alone off eBay, I believe it was around $30. To replace it took a lot of patience, a hairdryer on low for 15 mins to heat the glue up, finding a spot to slowly pry the glass away from the LCD. As I said, a lot of patience and a lot of mess since my screen was badly cracked and kept breaking off. Was worth it to save $300 though. Figured I could do it for $30 myself and if it broke I'd have had to of paid for both either way

It seems you already build enough experience with heating up the device. I hope it does the trick for you. On the other hand the adhesive itself shouldn't be much of a problem. They are not made by Samsung itself and if it's not working and still refuse to buy a new glass, I'd just go to a repair shop as I did here in the Netherlands and ask the repair guy to order it. It shouldn't cost more than a few bucks. On top of that just google "note 2 screen adhesive" and look at some amazon/ebay hits, just take that picture/info to the repair guy as a reference to know what to order

Im from the netherlands too, which shops do you recommend? I bought my phone at coolblue, but I dont want to lose my phone for 2 weeks with repair..
