Do you understand why?
Clearing cache/data for an app force closes it. It will return on reboot

As has been pointed out, that does not fix it. All that was done is merely force closing maps and it will resume the exact same behavior upon a reboot.
Open maps and let it find your location. That should actually resolve the issue for you with the added benefit of actually persisting after a reboot.

Whenever I open market, when I get to selecting an app from a list I get: Unfortunately, market has stopped working. No idea what to do, happened after I installed the Netflix HD app. If anyone has an idea, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

ROM/Kernel?
Does anyone have the older google maps apk, possibly from last couple of months? The most recent one is crap. I'm on vacation and it just told me to literally turn into a 1 way highway. And its keeping my phone from going into deep sleep, even when uninstall, I have to reboot to fully get rid of it. Any help is appreciated

Can't you just uninstall updates?

Google Navigation....clear data for Google MAPS in Applications Manager.
If that fails...uninstall Maps, then reinstall it from Google Play.

Sigh...OK. Seems I have to do that fairly often. I never used to have to do that on my old Captivate.
I wonder why things keep getting messed up with NAV.
I Don't use my maps at all and i turned off all the setting as you can see and i dont have GPS on. so can anyone maybe take a guess why its take so much battery and its never under active apps. and i posted the setting in the pics any suggestions? I try to turn off my data when im not using it?
+bump
Am having the same issue with my S4. Didn't open the Google Maps app all day and yet it uses close to 40% of the battery.
The S4 battery life sucks! This is with pretty much No use at work today had On the Job Training so couldn't use my phone much... Already having T-mobile senting me another s4 if it doesn't get better switching to the HTC One

Go to Google Settings app, then go to location then turn off access location. Make sure Location Services is OFF as well.
Do you happen to use Google Now? For some reason, its location implementation makes it use Google Maps although you the user have never opened the app itself. I've had this problem myself too and I ended up disabling Google Now

I found this or clearing the cache would stop maps from wake locking.

what is that a app?
Go into Map settings>Location settings and turn off Resort grin this device and Enable Location History. This should solve your problem.
I had same problem I solved by searching on google. The trick is to disable and factory reinstall it.
When you go in app manager then map click Disable it will the propose you to install factory version say yes and renable it then boot just in case and Map won't consume the battery.
It worked for me and alot of other people
I don't why it do this some kind of bug in map that is delivered with phone but resting solve it.

I just did that, but do I need to update to the latest maps though? I'm guessing No, cuz the latest update has people complaining about the battery drain.

I just discovered that when I click on the arrow in the Google Maps search bar to do a directions search the application is FCing. Anyone else seeing this?
Nope. Works fine here.

Happened to me too and restarting fixed it like for you. I was using another app that uses GPS so I figured that was the problem (though I never had it happen with my note 2). Wierd.

I've never had this happen either but it's back and after a reboot still happening. I do a search for a location and start navigation with no problem but I can use the directions functionality. Hopefully Google will fix it soon.
Google just updated the app. No issues now
