Hey I've had the HTC Desire for around 2 weeks now and its been awesome, well until these last couple of days. The phone for some reason keeps on rebooting on its own randomly and about 10 minutes ago it shutdown and would not power back on :S. I had to remove the battery, place it back and then it powered up (after pressing the power button).
I have not rooted the desire ... anyone know of any apps which may be causing this issue? or Any solutions for this issue?
Thanks
there are too many apps to mention which could be doing this to compatibility issues
you tell us, what apps have you installed? and more importantly which apps have you installed recently?
is your desire still rebooting now that you've taken the battery out and put it back in? or is it working now?
Have a look at this thread ?

i am familiar with that thread
although he didn't mention it was an internet/apn issue
i don't suppose you've installed juice defender?
so recently installed apps are:
Dropbox
Spark
Light Racer 3D Basic
HTC_IME mod (Atari version of the keyboard)
AndAppStore
Astro File Manager
AppInstaller
AppMonster
BatteryTimeLite
Beautiful Silence Widgets
Gigbox
JuicePlotter, JuiceDefender and Ultimate Juice
Flashlight
Soccer Livescores
PicSay
Calorie Counter
Advanced Task killer
Fring
Those are the apps i've installed since may 1st.
It's working atm but it has rebooted after i have removed the battery in the las couple of days. Its the first time it wouldn't boot back. Thanks

on another thread the issue was caused by juice defender changing the apn and then not changing it back but this was because it was uninstalled, oddly enough it was this causing reboot cycles on the desire
with advanced task killer it is very likely that juice defender changed the apn and then before it could change it back was killed by a.t.k
would recommend uninstalling atk anyway as it has been proven to cause problems. try this and then see if the problem persists.
Alright i've uninstalled ATK. Hope this fixes the issue (i'll post up an update on the situation tomorrow). Any other task manager apps you would recommend or just not use one?

i just wouldn't use one, this has been explained in more detail but i'll try to explain
android manages memory more efficiently, if an application is launched, it will stay in memory until the memory is needed for something else, then android will close this application and give the memory to the new one.
if say for example you force close the browser, it could have been linked to google maps, the news widget, friend stream etc, and once the browser is closed by the task killer, the other applications will re-open it in order to complete what they are doing, this will drain a large amount of battery.
correct me if i'm wrong
keep us updated if it doesn't work then try the fixes i posted on the other thread posted above

Yea i have read about that a few times and i should know better hehe. Was trying to save on battery life but juice defender and ultimate juice should be more efficient in that respect. I will post an update tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully its a positive update
Right so the desire hasn't rebooted on me since installing advanced task manager (not that I've noticed anyway). The only thing that happens is that it froze up on me once and I needed to remove the battery for it to reboot... But other than that no other issues so maybe it was atk doing the damage.
Sent from my HTC Desire just for good measure
right so it was fine but a couple of hours after posting the update it reboot itself and again this morning... seems like its going to have to be a hard reset... any last tips that might help before i so this?
I read the thread that was posted earlier but that seems to be an error with hanging up calls and apn issues. I don't use apn and it does if randomly but thanks for trying to help.

mine has been rebooting a lot, I've narrowed it down to the thing overheating, phoned HTC and they suggest I get it swapped. Does yours reboot more often when it is warm? eg. gps&wifi on, or when its on charge?
yea it seems too. even while playing games.
I'll send HTC an email and see is they reccomend I do the same.

I installed Taskiller last night, then HTC Desire started playing up, the screen froze, I couldn't do anything or even switch off using power button. I ended up taking the battery out to reset it. On firing up it just sorta went into a loop rebooting on reaching the homepage. After a few attempts I manage to get Appremover working, I removed taskiller and phone is now behaving itself again.
Obvious to me what the culprit was.
It was a worrying few moments as the phone is only a week old.

yep Ive stopped using task killers. they seem to be causing phones to misbehave. android's native memory management seems to work well anyways so no need for any kind of task killer/management app.

Rigjt, so after emailing HTC and them helping me I find that the issue was being caused by a third party app. Took me the best part of 2 hours but I finally found the culprit.
Right so the app causing the problem for me was beautiful silence widgets, which is a shame as they are great widgets (emailed the developer so they might release a fix for it).
The testing process was making a list of all the apps I had installed on the my desire. Then installing a few at a time, I would reboot the phone into safe mode. Which ever app causes it to reboot almost instantly I guess was causing the issue.
Finally my desire seems to be functioning properly. Fingers crossed that I don't jynx it.

mine reboots when using gprs/Wifi everything else its fine
Problem is when it does reboot it gets to the main screen and reboots again unless im quick enough to get to settings and deactivate gprs/Wifi
Uninstalled advanced task killer now have used gprs for a small amount of time since and no reboots so hopefully its fixed
Mine used to reboot itself while using 3g or WiFi, but the problem seems to have gone (hopefully) after I disabled the Background Data in the sync settings. Looks like it's some application trying to update itself like weather widget or something... Now it's just a process of elimination I guess...

Good luck and I hope you don't have too many third party apps. It's a pain but its worth it in the end to have your phone working properly.
If you have any task killers I recommend staring with does. They seem to cause a lot of issues on the desire.

k i read about an app called spare parts on here so i figured hey i'll try it out. i did saw what extra setting were there and decided i wasn't gonna use it didn't even change any settings.
after opening the app and then pressing home something wierd happened i saw a white screen with HTC in green in the center for about 3-5 seconds my backround with a loading pop-up and nothing else for about another 3-5 seconds. this is happening every time i press the home button or exit out of an app. it's getting infuriating, i'm also getting wicked bad lagg in sense and lot's of hang up's and force closes. also wicked bad battery life. i don't know what to do to fix it.
i have the OTA and rooted last night with unrevoked method, this morning is when i tried the app around 10 or 11 not sure last couple days is a blur.
can anyone help, how can i restore what i had previously, do i have to do a full wipe.

get used to it if you intend to use sense, the screen you speak of is sort of like the htc sense/rosie intro. If you dont like it you can go vanilla and use another launcher, like adw froyo, launcherpro, or even the extra launcher thats included....
Sounds like you enabled aggressive handling of apps. Can you get in there to turn it off?

Or just do a factory reset.
also, you are experiencing some isolated problems which leads me to beleive the issue is software related rather than hardware.I have experienced NOT ONE of the issues you speak of. Make sure you update prl. I can vouch for that one. My data was 90% broken till i did. Also try and wipe data, that would prolly fix everything as well.....FYI, i cannot gurantee the problem lies with your hardware OR software. Thats just my diagnosis. Good luck
Thats what it was the agressive handling of processes thanks alot guys feel like a fool.....

Heh...I did that once on my hero. I know the feeling.
some versions of spare parts come with a launcher. the problem is that when you press the home button now, it's trying to goof with /system, which is forcing the reboot. even though you may be rooted, you don't have rw privileges in /system while messing with android.
you may be able to get away with accessing /system and erasing your goofy installed spare parts app. you'll have to do that through adb shell, and the custom recovery. do a search for 'remove apps', you should find it easily enough. i think the thread was moved from dev to general, or q and a.
anything that will call a write to /system (i.e. a rooted app that needs access to it to work right) has the potential to cause the phone to reboot. when i installed adfree, it had the same effect. trying to install hosts (which write to /system/etc) caused a reboot. i had to install hosts through recovery with a push after remount.
hope that helps
Hmm I installed autokiller and it appears to work doesn't mess with anything that is
I really dunno a way of testing that its actually working though if you where looking for a way to manage memory
I was using a task killer but read up on stuff and turned it off just keeping it in case I need it for something that wont close and the phone is running great and battery life keeps getting better and better.

autokiller
People you need to be careful with autokillers!
Make sure that you are not closing down sense items.
Put anything that says htc or sense on ignore.
If not you are shutting down parts of sense. Then sense has to reboot. Witch is why you see the white screen with the htc logo in the middle.
I've been using Cyanongen 7.0.3 for a couple of months now. Recently the phone is acting quite strange. It's constantly lockig up(I need to remove the battery to restart it). Has anyone else noticed this behavior? Can this be caused by an app that's installed?

I have noticed the same problem with every non-sense roms i have tried (oxygen, CM, Redux and MIUI). In my case it specially occurs when I used Spotify, It stops paying music and then force-close after that the rom gets very slow, cant restart the normal way either, have to pull out the battery...
I think I've found the problem. After uninstalling JuiceDefender the problem stopped(at least for now)

My Desire phone has been doing that since it was new - last January. When I make or receive a phone call, the screen locks so that I cannot use the keyboard for an automated answering system. Finally, I can never hang up. Pressing the power button sometimes shows the hang up button for about half a second.
I sent it to the HTC agent for repair and was told nothing was wrong with it!
I have rooted the phone, to see if I could change the settings controlling the phone, but so far have had no luck. I can't use the phone as a phone!!!!!
PS. At first, I uninstalled all the apps I had collected, but the problem continued. I have also reset the phone to factory settings, but still no improvement. I wonder how many users have this sort of problem.
There's this strange problem my phone has where the flashlight is turned on whenever i hit the power button to turn off my screen It has been working fine on android revolution rom for the past 3 months then this problem started occurring just this morning. Going to the official htc flashlight app to adjust the brightness works but it cannot turn off the flashlight unless i initiate a shutdown. anyone has any idea how i can solve this problem ? is this a hardware or software issue ?

If it worked before you tried a new ROM it's bound to be s/w. Is Tasker baked in to the ROM or did you install it? Some third party app is triggering Flashlight to launch when you press the power button. You might want to check the dev who built the ROM's thread or ping him or her.
In aokp there's a turn flash light on by hitting power option in the settings have a look at your roms settings.

this rom isn't exactly new its a 3 month old build and has nv given me any sort of problems before till this strange problem started occurring. Is there any way to disable the flashlight for good so it doesn't keep turning on and draining my battery ?

If it were me, I'd want to figure the problem out as what's causing it may not be limited to Flashlight (EG: other things are being turned off or on and you just don't know it). I you want to disable it, go in to Apps>All>flashlight and clear data, force stop, and then hit disable.
Do you have EQS? If so, try to turn flashlight on then off again from the EQS tab itself.

Have you solved this? I am having the same problem. Wondering if it is a little virus or something.
Try freezing the flashlight app

its software related.
i m using viper rom and it has the option to trigger flashlight when power button is pressed (while screen off) . ive enabled it. so yea, you can disable it as well.
so check that.
Well if you're on viper it's an option for flashlight.. You can change in venom tweaks...

Lately I've experienced an annoying problem. I recently went back to rosie launcher after hox got updated, and I really like it. BUT sometimes when I press the home button leaving an application, I get a screen of my wallpaper "blurred" out and a wheel spinning, saying 'loading'. I guess this is sense reloading, most likely because it had to be shut down to free up some RAM or something (?).
Is there something I should check or do to prevent this from happening?
Thanks!
I'm not 100% this will fix your problem, but if you're on a custom rom you should try clearing your cache/dalvik cache again , i started getting a really laggy rosie on Sense 4.1, until i erased my caches again, i don't know if it will fix your problem, or if you're even on a custom rom, but it's worth a shot right?
It's completely stock 4.0.4, recently updated to 2.17.401.2 Rosie runs really smooth, but it's just this reload that happens randomly. Do you mean clearing cache for HTC Sense in the apps-section in settings ? Or is it a bit more advanced?

Oh, sorry i thought you were custom rommed , right you could try clearing that cache as it seems like something is crashing your rosie launcher , Is it the same loading bar, like when you restart your device, little white box with a spiney circle?
Have you installed any third party application lately or even played about with some settings? i'd double check everything and try clear some caches. Did it seem like it lagged a lot then restarted rosie?

I cleared the cache for sense tho. No lagg before the loading screen. There IS a white box, but the spiney circle and "LOADING" is the only items on screen except wallpaper. Only thing I've done in settings lately is deactivating Locations-widget and twitter-widget because they were draining battery. I don't know if the problem was present when I bought the phone either, cause I changed to Apex launcher quite fast
hmm
Looks like this.

I had the same problem especially after exiting Flipboard, the 4.1 made it worse, it was reloading pretty often and randomly.
I simply switched the phone off and on and since then it has not happened yet 4-5 days of normal usage. I guess there was something hogging memory. I know it is not very scientific but with stock we don't have many options I'm afraid.

Already rebooted the device a couple of times, but still there. Thanks for your tip tho
I could of course do a hard reset and just set up the phone again. It's easy to install lots of crap when experimenting with home screens and widgets.
Go settings, developer options, tick don't keep activities, hit the home button, then back into developer options and untick the option.
