Hey I've had the HTC Desire for around 2 weeks now and its been awesome, well until these last couple of days. The phone for some reason keeps on rebooting on its own randomly and about 10 minutes ago it shutdown and would not power back on :S. I had to remove the battery, place it back and then it powered up (after pressing the power button).
I have not rooted the desire ... anyone know of any apps which may be causing this issue? or Any solutions for this issue?
Thanks
there are too many apps to mention which could be doing this to compatibility issues
you tell us, what apps have you installed? and more importantly which apps have you installed recently?
is your desire still rebooting now that you've taken the battery out and put it back in? or is it working now?
Have a look at this thread ?

i am familiar with that thread
although he didn't mention it was an internet/apn issue
i don't suppose you've installed juice defender?
so recently installed apps are:
Dropbox
Spark
Light Racer 3D Basic
HTC_IME mod (Atari version of the keyboard)
AndAppStore
Astro File Manager
AppInstaller
AppMonster
BatteryTimeLite
Beautiful Silence Widgets
Gigbox
JuicePlotter, JuiceDefender and Ultimate Juice
Flashlight
Soccer Livescores
PicSay
Calorie Counter
Advanced Task killer
Fring
Those are the apps i've installed since may 1st.
It's working atm but it has rebooted after i have removed the battery in the las couple of days. Its the first time it wouldn't boot back. Thanks

on another thread the issue was caused by juice defender changing the apn and then not changing it back but this was because it was uninstalled, oddly enough it was this causing reboot cycles on the desire
with advanced task killer it is very likely that juice defender changed the apn and then before it could change it back was killed by a.t.k
would recommend uninstalling atk anyway as it has been proven to cause problems. try this and then see if the problem persists.
Alright i've uninstalled ATK. Hope this fixes the issue (i'll post up an update on the situation tomorrow). Any other task manager apps you would recommend or just not use one?

i just wouldn't use one, this has been explained in more detail but i'll try to explain
android manages memory more efficiently, if an application is launched, it will stay in memory until the memory is needed for something else, then android will close this application and give the memory to the new one.
if say for example you force close the browser, it could have been linked to google maps, the news widget, friend stream etc, and once the browser is closed by the task killer, the other applications will re-open it in order to complete what they are doing, this will drain a large amount of battery.
correct me if i'm wrong
keep us updated if it doesn't work then try the fixes i posted on the other thread posted above

Yea i have read about that a few times and i should know better hehe. Was trying to save on battery life but juice defender and ultimate juice should be more efficient in that respect. I will post an update tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully its a positive update
Right so the desire hasn't rebooted on me since installing advanced task manager (not that I've noticed anyway). The only thing that happens is that it froze up on me once and I needed to remove the battery for it to reboot... But other than that no other issues so maybe it was atk doing the damage.
Sent from my HTC Desire just for good measure
right so it was fine but a couple of hours after posting the update it reboot itself and again this morning... seems like its going to have to be a hard reset... any last tips that might help before i so this?
I read the thread that was posted earlier but that seems to be an error with hanging up calls and apn issues. I don't use apn and it does if randomly but thanks for trying to help.

mine has been rebooting a lot, I've narrowed it down to the thing overheating, phoned HTC and they suggest I get it swapped. Does yours reboot more often when it is warm? eg. gps&wifi on, or when its on charge?
yea it seems too. even while playing games.
I'll send HTC an email and see is they reccomend I do the same.

I installed Taskiller last night, then HTC Desire started playing up, the screen froze, I couldn't do anything or even switch off using power button. I ended up taking the battery out to reset it. On firing up it just sorta went into a loop rebooting on reaching the homepage. After a few attempts I manage to get Appremover working, I removed taskiller and phone is now behaving itself again.
Obvious to me what the culprit was.
It was a worrying few moments as the phone is only a week old.

yep Ive stopped using task killers. they seem to be causing phones to misbehave. android's native memory management seems to work well anyways so no need for any kind of task killer/management app.

Rigjt, so after emailing HTC and them helping me I find that the issue was being caused by a third party app. Took me the best part of 2 hours but I finally found the culprit.
Right so the app causing the problem for me was beautiful silence widgets, which is a shame as they are great widgets (emailed the developer so they might release a fix for it).
The testing process was making a list of all the apps I had installed on the my desire. Then installing a few at a time, I would reboot the phone into safe mode. Which ever app causes it to reboot almost instantly I guess was causing the issue.
Finally my desire seems to be functioning properly. Fingers crossed that I don't jynx it.

mine reboots when using gprs/Wifi everything else its fine
Problem is when it does reboot it gets to the main screen and reboots again unless im quick enough to get to settings and deactivate gprs/Wifi
Uninstalled advanced task killer now have used gprs for a small amount of time since and no reboots so hopefully its fixed
Mine used to reboot itself while using 3g or WiFi, but the problem seems to have gone (hopefully) after I disabled the Background Data in the sync settings. Looks like it's some application trying to update itself like weather widget or something... Now it's just a process of elimination I guess...

Good luck and I hope you don't have too many third party apps. It's a pain but its worth it in the end to have your phone working properly.
If you have any task killers I recommend staring with does. They seem to cause a lot of issues on the desire.

k i read about an app called spare parts on here so i figured hey i'll try it out. i did saw what extra setting were there and decided i wasn't gonna use it didn't even change any settings.
after opening the app and then pressing home something wierd happened i saw a white screen with HTC in green in the center for about 3-5 seconds my backround with a loading pop-up and nothing else for about another 3-5 seconds. this is happening every time i press the home button or exit out of an app. it's getting infuriating, i'm also getting wicked bad lagg in sense and lot's of hang up's and force closes. also wicked bad battery life. i don't know what to do to fix it.
i have the OTA and rooted last night with unrevoked method, this morning is when i tried the app around 10 or 11 not sure last couple days is a blur.
can anyone help, how can i restore what i had previously, do i have to do a full wipe.

get used to it if you intend to use sense, the screen you speak of is sort of like the htc sense/rosie intro. If you dont like it you can go vanilla and use another launcher, like adw froyo, launcherpro, or even the extra launcher thats included....
Sounds like you enabled aggressive handling of apps. Can you get in there to turn it off?

Or just do a factory reset.
also, you are experiencing some isolated problems which leads me to beleive the issue is software related rather than hardware.I have experienced NOT ONE of the issues you speak of. Make sure you update prl. I can vouch for that one. My data was 90% broken till i did. Also try and wipe data, that would prolly fix everything as well.....FYI, i cannot gurantee the problem lies with your hardware OR software. Thats just my diagnosis. Good luck

Heh...I did that once on my hero. I know the feeling.
some versions of spare parts come with a launcher. the problem is that when you press the home button now, it's trying to goof with /system, which is forcing the reboot. even though you may be rooted, you don't have rw privileges in /system while messing with android.
you may be able to get away with accessing /system and erasing your goofy installed spare parts app. you'll have to do that through adb shell, and the custom recovery. do a search for 'remove apps', you should find it easily enough. i think the thread was moved from dev to general, or q and a.
anything that will call a write to /system (i.e. a rooted app that needs access to it to work right) has the potential to cause the phone to reboot. when i installed adfree, it had the same effect. trying to install hosts (which write to /system/etc) caused a reboot. i had to install hosts through recovery with a push after remount.
hope that helps
Hmm I installed autokiller and it appears to work doesn't mess with anything that is
I really dunno a way of testing that its actually working though if you where looking for a way to manage memory
I was using a task killer but read up on stuff and turned it off just keeping it in case I need it for something that wont close and the phone is running great and battery life keeps getting better and better.

People you need to be careful with autokillers!
Make sure that you are not closing down sense items.
Put anything that says htc or sense on ignore.
If not you are shutting down parts of sense. Then sense has to reboot. Witch is why you see the white screen with the htc logo in the middle.
Out now in the market, but has major issues right off the bat, notably no sound or notification settings. Sort of ridiculous to launch without those!
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
The lack of notifications kind of sucks. Been playing it and aside from those, there doesn't seem to be any other bugs.
I do get a visual notification in the status bar but without audio, its a pain.
It keeps giving me a force close error. Anyone have any idea why? ive uninstalled plenty times, and even cleared the data. problem persists.

After using it for the past few days, I do get FC's on a fairly regular basis. Not so much that it makes it unusable, but definitely enough to make it annoying.
I've read some other threads and this is one of the 'bugs' that needs to be ironed out. Hopefully they have an update for these bugs soon.
It'll get updates,don't worry.

The first time I installed it was plagued with all kinds of crazy stupid bugs and connection errors.
I uninstalled and reinstalled, and notifications etc. are working so far. Haven't used it a ton yet.
I can say that so far the UI etc. really isn't very good. and FULL PAGE ADS after every turn? extremely annoying. Considering how annoying they make it with ads, im surprised theres no paid version too...
I'm sure there will be updates. Question is when. Did take them a while to get the game out on Android.
I read on their website that a pay version without all the ads will be available in the future as well.

Update now available via the market...
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Update fixed many issues with closes and errors, and gave options menu for sounds and notifications.
My current issues are:
1) Even when phone is on silent, the game sounds still play
2) I'm seeing some pretty serious battery drain issues since installing the game, even though I have the notifications push at 30 minutes. I've used other scrabble-type games for a long time with constant push notifications and never had battery drain like this. I feel like the crazy amount of ads really wastes lots of battery.
The update has definitely brought on some improvements but there is still a ways to go.
I still do not get any audio notifications. The visual popup works in the status bar but nothing audible. (Yes sounds are checked in settings and volume on device, both ringer and media is up)
I'm not getting as many FC's as I was before, but that doesn't say much as they were all too common at launch.
I have also noticed the battery drain. Not sure what exactly is causing it. Over the last three days my game play has been about the same. Day 1 drain was very bad. Day 2, it was normal. Day 3, very bad again. We will see what today brings...
maybe i'm missing something. I can't get this thing to stay open at ALL. it always FC's on me before I can even do anything. I've tried on both CM6 and CM7.
Any ideas? I've emailed the devs twice.

I can get audio notifications when it pops into the status bar, only it doesn't seem to be effected by the sound status of my phone, so I just turned it off for now.
I have also noticed battery drain. I've been making maybe 20-30 plays per day maximum over a few games and my battery is just tanking. Words with Friends shows up in my battery status chart as 3%-5% of battery (which in itself is bad that its actually a quantifiable amount of battery drain), but I know its gotta be draining more, even with notifications on a 30min timer. I've been using WordSmith (very similar) for a few weeks now with push notifications and way more plays with no effect on my battery life so this is a Words with Friends issue.
I should also note that the last few times I've opened the app, something regarding the banner ad at the bottom of the page crashes, and blankets the whole screen with an HTML error. Sometimes it disappears and the ad blanks out, but other times I can't do anything about it. I don't think this is related to running the adFree Android app, but who knows with the level this app is running right now.

So you think it has something to do with adFree? I'm not sure about that as it works sometimes and not others, and it used to work fine before the update and now it doesn't. Cuz sometimes WWF will load just fine with a black bar at the bottom (per usual when u have adFree installed) and I can use it fine. But i'd say about 2/3 the time I get the full-screen HTML ad error. I haven't seen this happen in any other app ever and I've had adFree for several months now. Really weird.
Decided to just uninstall. Really not worth the hassle.
Noticed instantly after uninstall my battery stopped draining. Hope they fix the issues.

I had the same problem. What I did to fix it was to go into AdFree, and hit the "Revert" button, and that seemed to fix the weird HTML errors. Hope this helps!

Absolutely does rape battery. Main reason I uninstalled.
Really hoping someone can help me. I have had my Defy for a few months and have always been on a custom SBF but continue to experience problems with the Defy working amazingly for hours and then sometimes I turn the screen on and the Defy is working in some kind of super slow mode and opening anything takes ages, everything does eventually open so it’s not crashed but just going super slow!
I am currently on SBF 3.4.2-177 Nordic but have had the same problem on different SBF’s so either my phone has a hardware issue or its some software I have on my phone, I am currently on Beta 6 of CM7 and have had this issue on other betas of CM7 but have never heard of anyone else with this issue. The phone will sometimes go a whole day without the issue also which is weird. It is not overclocked either. When it goes into what I now call superslow mode I have checked to see what the processor and memory usage are and both are around 60% used not being topped out at all. I have even used StabiltyTest to test the memory and CPU when the problem is occurring and both run through fine.
I really would love to know if anyone else had a similar problem or if they know what is causing it or how I can find out what is causing it without removing every bit of software I use. The only piece of software I use regularly that runs in the background is Juicedefender so I am going to remove this now and see what happens over a few days.
Any help would be amazing
Many Thanks
Bob
Did you install the latest patch for the auto-brightness issue? or Did you turn off the auto-brightness?
Thanks for the fast reply I have already installed the latest patch for auto-brightness issue but still have the problem
Was the phone slow in the stock ROM? I mean that's really wired that the problem appears on each SBF

Same here, my phone suddenly becomes sluggish and unusable. Yesterday it was stuck on 100% cpu usage, I entered the task manager to see what was wrong and there wasn't any application that was using the cpu.
Only solution is to reboot everyday.
Glad to see I am not the only one, yea a reboot does the job sometimes it can be twice a day sometimes I don't see it for a few days, do you guys have juice defender installed by any chance as thats the only real program which stays running in my background which is extra to the roms I have used, cheers for your input, lets hope we can figure out whats going on.

I had it to in the past. When i tried to lock the phone it took long time and it wouldn't unlock for a wile 1-2min what is verry long if your waiting and afterwards scrolling was lame.
Don't know what I did, but it's gone now. Now only when out of memory(dhuu!)
I think I wiped it cleen, went to a 2.2 and didn't have it again, now on CM.
Do you see in spare parts any apps using mutch cpu?
Weirdest thing that happens to me..
Every hour/day the phone loads up some applications prepared to start when I turn on the phone..
That means that if I close say, tigertext or Skype, the following day, without turning off the phone, hey are running again.. wtf?
EDIT: A way of checking what's using the CPU, if you're on Froyo, is check the application manager to check for services CPU usage
Yea I have no idea what is causing it but little to no cpu usage when it happens, when I lock on cm7 the tv effect for screen off is super slow motion its really strange, did a clean wipe yesterday and did its first slow down today just before post, cheers

Hi dasbin,
Since uninstalling Juicedefender from my phone I have not had this issue once, it has now been 3 days which is probably a record for me so I would say that it was causing me the issue, do you have juicedefender installed? I am now using green power it is much better so far.

I've been using Cyanongen 7.0.3 for a couple of months now. Recently the phone is acting quite strange. It's constantly lockig up(I need to remove the battery to restart it). Has anyone else noticed this behavior? Can this be caused by an app that's installed?

I have noticed the same problem with every non-sense roms i have tried (oxygen, CM, Redux and MIUI). In my case it specially occurs when I used Spotify, It stops paying music and then force-close after that the rom gets very slow, cant restart the normal way either, have to pull out the battery...
I think I've found the problem. After uninstalling JuiceDefender the problem stopped(at least for now)

My Desire phone has been doing that since it was new - last January. When I make or receive a phone call, the screen locks so that I cannot use the keyboard for an automated answering system. Finally, I can never hang up. Pressing the power button sometimes shows the hang up button for about half a second.
I sent it to the HTC agent for repair and was told nothing was wrong with it!
I have rooted the phone, to see if I could change the settings controlling the phone, but so far have had no luck. I can't use the phone as a phone!!!!!
PS. At first, I uninstalled all the apps I had collected, but the problem continued. I have also reset the phone to factory settings, but still no improvement. I wonder how many users have this sort of problem.
I've had my Galaxy nexus for slightly over a month now and it had been great! No problems, perfect screen (at least i dont detect anything) But as of late, problems began to show one after another. The problems includes the "appear to be charging when not plugged in" problem, when charging, the touch screen doesn't work (registers random touches) but most importantly, an heating problem.
Typically, if i was in the middle of an app or using my camera, i'd be fine with the heat. However, i noticed my problem when i am walking down the street with the phone in my jacket pocket listening to music. I felt the heat through my jacket pocket! I have a habit of using my task manager to stop all ongoing task everytime i use my phone so all that is on is hte music app.
Any1 else has this problem or know how to solve it? Is it an hardware issue where i should contact samsung for my warranty?
there is a touchscreen bug, but not this one. the other can be undo by switch in standby and back again.
the other problems look like app/rom problems. maybe u have an app installed that runs in background and cant be killed easily be kick the app out of the taskmanager.

The thing is the whole bolt symbol while not charging thing is keeping my screen on. I have uninstalled all apps i've installed as of late. The only apps i have left are lightbox, facebook, skype, windup knight, and angry birds.
Also, another problem i have is mobile data. I switched it off because i dont have a data plan but every now and then, it'll automatically switch itself back on. Is that normal?
I am currently using stock rom (i've haven't decided if i know my GN enough to need a custom yet)
there is a developer option that keeps your screen on while charging. try to toggle that.
and no its not normal that it ll automatically switch on. for this the apps needs special permission you can find in security/deviceadministration (hope name translation is correct ^^)
