I purchased the HTX One X last Friday after some low life stole my Xperia S in Norway. So far I like the phone, however I'm have a major problem due to unreliable and intermittent 3G signal. The data speed varies significantly from a good connection to complete drop out over a period of a few seconds both at home and in the office. I also think that the continuous signal drop out is killing the battery life as the phone is continuously searching for a signal. The phone was purchased sim Free and I have a Three sim only contract. .
By comparison my Xperia S (also on three) had a really fast and stable 3G signal. I also did a couple of tests tonight using my old Iphone 4. The Iphone averaged 2460 kbps using the speed test app while the HTC averaged only 542 kbps. It was also noticeable that the Iphone gave consistent results while the HTC was pretty random and often couldn't finish the test.
I'm pretty certain that this is a faulty phone and will try and return it tomorrow for a replacement. however before I take it back I just wanted to check if anyone has had a similar problem and if they found a solution.
At the end of the day I'd prefer to stick with the HTC but if the connection issues cannot be resolved then I may have to go back to the Xperia S
What is your Firmware Version ?
I had the same issue with poor signal o2 uk, with 1.26 software but after upgrading to 1.28 my signal strength improved! try checking for software update and see if that helps!!
software version is 1.28.401.9
I have sw 1.29. Sinne yesterday i have a very Bad signal. I changed my sim i placed the sim in my iphone. Sim and network are working correctly.
Now i have in good network areas only 2 3 signal bars.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I checked now again the hox. I have no 3g signal. Only edge.
exchanged the handset yesterday and the connection speed seems to be much more stable. However I haven't updated the firmware from1.26.401.2 as I'm concerned that the update may have caused problems on the previous phone. If I update and experience the same problems is there a way to change back to the original firmware version?

guys .I have poor reception with htc onex .
The reception is exactly the same as sensation .
how is your reception ?could you please compare your reception with onex and your previous phone ?
I have a DHD as well as the One X. Both get poor reception in my house, so I have a Vodafone Sure Signal to boost it. But without the SS, I would say that the One X is very similar to the DHD, both vary from "no signal" to 3 bars out of 5. The signal fluctuates so rapidly that it's hard to do decent comparison, even with the phones side by side, but neither goes above 3 bars, and most of the time I have 1.
Worth bearing in mind, though, that the DHD is 18 months old and has had several radio updates in that time. I can't be sure now, but I think reception in the house was worse when I first got it. Hopefully the One X will see radio improvements as well in future firmware updates.
Thanks for reply.so its not only me with poor receptions
Well, I live in a bit of a mobile black spot. There's good signal just up the road, on very slightly higher ground. I've tried sim cards from all the main UK networks and they're all about as bad as each other. So it's not really the phone's fault - my brother's iPhone has the same problems when he's here.
But to answer your original question about comparing this to my old phone, the One X is about the same as my DHD, and I have hopes it may improve as HTC release newer radio software.
I'm lucky that work provided a Sure Signal (femtocell) device to get round the problem, as I'm sometimes on call and need to be reached on my work mobile.
mine is much worse than my DHD on T-Mobile (UK - 1800Mhz)
I have a Vodafone Sure Signal femtocell device, which connects to my broadband and provides a localised 3G signal in my house, as network reception here is poor.
I have 2 other phones connected to the SS just fine, but the One X is intermittently losing the connection and needs a reboot to re-connect. There have been some other posts on the Vodafone UK forums from folks with a One X, not many but enough to make me wonder if there's a more common problem.
Does anyone else here have a Sure Signal, and if so, are you having any problems with it?
I don't personally have it but my friend does and he is getting drops constantly he is not best pleased as he had yellow spot issue aswell aha i think he's going to thro the OX off the wall shortly. He has phoned regarding this and got nowhere
Thanks for the reply. VF have contacted me after I posted on their eforums, I've raised a ticket and they're investigating. I'll report back if anything improves.
VF UK are really pushing the One X, so if there is a problem, I imagine they'll want to get it fixed.
do the vodafone handsets have vodafone firmware? i have a factory unlocked non branded unit I'm using on vodafone with SS and hab=ve had zero problems!
Thanks for the reply. I got mine from dialaphone and it's pure stock WWE. It's working now, but still a little flakey. If it loses connection to the SS, I turn airplane mode off and on again and it works again (quicker than a reboot).
Most of the One X users with problems on the VF forum have their old number on a new sim card, which apparently can cause the Sure Signal to bug out a bit until the new sim is registered. Mine is a brand new number though. It's lasting a day or so before I have any issues.
The SS has always been a little on the flakey side, though, I need to reset it every so often - but that's been weeks or months apart rather than days.
I have one of the older models with 4 lights, not sure if that makes a difference.
Half wondering if it's the phone not the SS, but will see how it goes for the next few days.
I have had very poor suresignal performance...and have swapped out one phone already after speaking to HTC.
But have found that by turning off WIFI, it seems to be a lot happier, and the replacement phone acts just the same as the first (sim free from CPW)
But without WIFI, all data comes out of your data plan, and not from your broadband even thought the SS uses the broadband connection.
I never got to the bottom of my sure signal problems with this phone until I installed cyanogenmod.
However I recently installed sense 5 and my phone would again not connect to my sure signal. I have gone back to cyanogenmod and the problem still exisits.
Can someone who uses a sure signal please tell me which radio you are using by going to settings, about phone, baseband version
Many thanks
Have been loving my One X for almost 2 weeks now but have a bit of a dilemma. Firstly does everyone have a similar signal problem as I'm getting i.e. once or twice a day I completely loose connection to my carrier (t-mobile UK) and sometimes have to reboot in order to regain network? Secondly if this isn't a mass problem do I return my handset or wait for the OTA update to see if this improves? I know there has been quite a bit of discussion on the effects of the bottom left corner giving the phone a so called "death grip" and was wondering if any update would improve this as this would surely be a hardware issue? Anyone's thoughts on this would be greatfully appreciated
TIA LEWY

Same.
I have the same issue (losing signal and having to reboot) around 4 or 5 times a day, on an unlocked One X on Three UK.
This only started happening to my phone after the 1.28 OTA update a couple of days ago. Before that, the signal was rock-solid.
Am going to try a complete reset of my phone and see what happens.
Some for me. H3g (tre) Italy.
My problems were from day one. So thought I would hold out and see if 1.28 made any difference. Since Wednesday after installing the update my signal greatly improved and have not had to reboot once! I cut down my existing sim and thought I may have damaged it, but it's fine now.
Same here (tmobile uk)
I'm on T-mobile UK and have a unlocked phone. Have the same problem although I have not had to reboot to get the signal back. Mine just seems to disappear for a few seconds and then comes back on it's own. I think it has improved slightly with the 1.28 ota. Signal does generally seem a little stronger now.
anyone out there had the update on t mobile UK .my signal is low ,its a bit embarrassing when my wifes galaxy ace on t mobile has got a better signal than my htc one.oh and the battery life is CRAP
Yes, I have. My phone is unbranded. Signal does seem better, gsm that is. Still get drop outs but not so often.

DID you buy it unbranded or did you do it yourself cheers
It was supplied unbranded.
Just noticed that I lose signal when it changes network. T-mobile to orange seems to be pretty smooth but when changing the other way the signal drops out for a while.
Today I noticed that the signal on my hox is worse than on my old desire. On places where my desire got constand hsdpa the hox switches constantly from hsdpa to 3g with less signal bars. Anyone else with this problem ?

Same here, I now have to go outside my office to be able to make calls that dont drop. With my SG2 would get full bar in my office, but with HOX only get 2bars
Yup mine seems the same, stumbled upon this thread looking for a solution so hopefully someone who has some success resolving the issue will be able to help.
I'm having this issue too, hopefully when s off has been achieved we will be able to flash different radios it has fixed this issue on all of my previous phones.
My phone also seems to have a somewhat weaker 3G reception than my SGS-2, although they both act in the same way in regards to switching between 3G and H+ all the time. I think this can be corrected partly via software updates since the wifi reception is much stronger on the HOX than any unit I ever had before. It is the same "antenna" the receives both signals isnt it?
Mine seems to get faster 3G speeds than my Gnex and GS2 (unless my network has improved in the past 2 week)
But phone signal is far worse, especially since the 1.28 update... I'm not getting signal now in places where I used to always get signal

My data speeds have dramatically decreased after the latest 1.28 update - quite dissapointing! I have no use for better signal if the data is worse lol
Have been lurking on here for a while now and noticed a few threads and comments about reception on the One X
I am in the same boat, was using a Desire S and now a One x and noticed there is a distinct difference in signal level between the two. Not just the signal bars (desire s has 4, One x has 5) but the dBm levels too.
I would say that 80% of those that have had the update and posted about signal have said that it has improved, regardless of carrier they use.
I went into the store where I bought mine from (ThreeUk Retail shop) and they were going to swap it out there and then for me but the handset on display (working demo) had a similar level to mine, so seemed pointless as Im guessing that all/most of the units are like this, it isnt an isolated case.
So, im not sure what to do now. I have just swapped my main number to Three (and its now my only number). Im without coverage far more than I used to be with Voda, or with Three using the Desire S.
Three shop says they have a 28 day policy for faulty handsets, I hope that the update is out before that so I can see for myself.
Brilliant handset though…. screen is lush, using the phone is a pleasure…. just brilliant.

I am noticing far worse signal on my handset than previous handsets , an awful lot of the time my handset switches between t-mobile and orange , whereas previous handsets were solid t-mobile all day , and also the data speeds are worse. I am not very impressed as the 1.28 update appears to have made this worse, and its an unlocked generic variant in the uk if thats of any help
cheers
james
My signal is loads better.
Before the update I couldn't sit on the sofa and make a call I would get 3bars then nothing.
Now I'm a fairly constant 4 bars sat on the sofa.
I'm on Tesco (so O2) I was going to take the handset back before the update.
Battery seems twice as good on a completely different note.

I have had a similar experience as descb600f. Prior to 1.28 my signal would drop regularly. After 1.28 I am finding it is far better, regularly seeing 3 bars, where before it would continually switch between 0 and 2 bars.
WiFi reception is great, puts my Desire to shame!
So which is it, does 1.28 make signal alot better or not? And what about actual call quality, its one thing getting 3 bars but another if calls are choppy
I do have to agree with the signal/Wifi issues on this device.. I came from a Nexus S (GSM model) and I used to get good HSPA/UMTS signals on that device, I also have a Wifi network setup in my house, it covers most of the house and some of the backyard.. However when out in the backyard the One X seems to drop the connection to the Wifi network, however my old Nexus S still has atleast 2-3 bars of Wifi connectivity and constantly keeps the signal/connection.
Has anyone else had issues like this with Home Wifi networks not getting as great a signal as other devices?
If I hold the One X in one hand and the Nexus S in the other and move away from the Wifi Access Point, the One X drops signal strength a lot quicker and the Nexus S keeps connection/signal a lot further away..
Bit dissapointed with that, and hope it's some how able to be fixed with software/firmware upgrades in the future?
Also I noticed the One X seems to switch between H/3G (HSPA/UMTS etc) quite a lot more than the Nexus S does, same network, holding both in same spot..
Apart from these minor issues and the screen flickering issue I'm more than happy with the One X..

WiFi and 2G/3G are two different chipsets and different antennas.
I have also notices dropsin the last 3 days, including hours with no reception at all
Need to switch from 1.26 to 1.28 soon to try it...
I should say I live in an area with only 2G reception and we sit in a dip partially hidden from the transmitters.
We can only get O2/Voda (orange/TMob if I just want to live upstairs in a corner of the house) and since the update I now have no issues with reception just like I used to.
1.28 has resolved my issues.
On the wifi front
I live in an old stone cottage with timber frame extension (wifi b/g can't make it thru our internal walls in the old part of the house), I have the N wifi router upstairs in the extension and have no issues with losing WiFi either (didn't have issues before 1.28).
Hope this helps people, I realise some may say it has got worse but for me the difference is night and day making the phone completely fine.
I just found an old 3 SIM (from a dongle) and popped it into my desire s and placed both by the window running Network Signal App for 30 minutes.
Both were attached to the same tower and the HOX was getting between -89 and -91 dbm, the Desire a consistent -75dbm.
Just hope that Three shake their touche's and get the update approved ASAP…. im quite a technical guy, but the idea of rooting and doing the update myself gives me the shakes…..
Steve
I've been losing signal a lot on 1.28 here in the UK on Vodafone and really don't want to exchange the phone because the hardware is perfect. I tried a new SIM yesterday, but that made no difference and because I don't want to swap out the phone I'm pinning my hopes on the new software. Is that sensible?
Also, I've tried some of the signal boosters available on the market and they don't seem to help. Has anyone had any success in this area?
Thanks in advance...
I don't know the answer to your question but I am on Vodafone and have noticed that the signal jumps between H, G and E loads
I'm on orange and have the same problem which I didn't have with my S2.

Firstly, Ive recently left Voda due to my then Bold 9900 often showing SOS and when it did show 3g, not been able to make a call, having to revert to GSM to make a call. The later was while standing within several vodafone sites.
Im now on ThreeUK. They have not got a 2g network of their own to fall back on and in most parts the roam onto Orange has been turned off.
Anyway, when I got my first HOX on 1.26 the signal was rubbish. Where I did have coverage before on a Desire S, there was non. Holding the two devices next to each other the HOX was approx 14dmb diffence in the RX levels. This meant where the Desire S had full signal, the HOX had half. Where the Desire S had half, the HOX had non or 1 bar.
After the update to 1.28 (i sent the branded Three handset back and bought a unbranded one) the signal was far far better. I have no updated to 1.29 via the RUU and its still great.
Most people found that the 1.26 to 1.28 (or 1.29) improves the signal, only a few are reporting issues with signal on the later updates.
Steve
Thank you for the response. Trouble is, I'm actually on 1.28 and am getting the poor reception. So I guess it's good to know that a software update can make a difference - I just have to wait for one to arrive...
It all depends if they changed the radio in the software update which as they suggest they improved battery life then it's quite likely that they did. If that is the case then it could be reversed but I doubt they will.do anything unless they have a large volume of issues.
Unbranded HOX here no issues with Vodafone. However at work indoor very poor but that's probably signal indoors is useless but when I get outdoor its fine. Can't wait for S-OFF so we can start testing different radios.

Any update that brings a new radio/base and will likely improve signal I'm not sure if these updates do have those things though.

I'm running Android Revolution 5.2.0 which I think runs on the latest 1.29 base and I'm getting constant signal drops where I work in the UK. Never had it with my Galaxy S before. I haven't ever done an RUU update since original stock firmware. Would flashing a newer RUU help?
Sent from my HTC One X
I've also got this issue, though it would seem It's not everywhere, some places no drop out, others constant dropout. Had my work Iphone 4 (uses vodefone cell) sat next to my hox today and only the hox had issues with signal (although both were low when the hox did have signal). Almost feels like it's only certain cells, or possibly when only in range of one tower? ... Not sure...

Signal Reception issues resolved
I had purchased HOX on 17-May and immediately got 1.28 update. Since then I had signal reception issues. It continued even after getting 1.29 update. After testing my SIM with Galaxy S3 and observing asu/dBm values, it was confirmed that my HOX had the problem. I took it to official HTC Service center and they just reflashed entire 1.29 ROM (not just the update). That seems to have resolved my issues. There are no dropped calls. I am getting signal in all the low signal areas that I know off.
