It enhances colours i think, like comparing dvd to HD. I love it
heard in software version 29 they are improving the feature too should look even better

Yes if you have stable hands. as it takes 3 shots (i think) at different exposures and merge them. to produce one detailed picture with sharper and more vibrant color at least depending on the shot.

It works as long as you have steady hands. It takes one overexposed shot, one underexposed, one normal, and combines all the best detail and colors from each shot to get the best image.
So you can have photo of a bright foreground subject with good detail, and also a good detail/brightness background.

No, it enhances the dynamic range of the picture. No for fast moving objects though because it should work by taking several shots at different exposure settings and combines them to achieve that effect. Basically you have the white and near-white differentiation from the under exposed shot and the black and near-black from the overexposed shot. That way you have neither overblown ares in your picture (white spots) nor dark areas (black spots).
Compared to our eyes camera sensors have relatively small dynamic range so HDR helps there but sometimes it makes the shot unrealistic (which might be the desired effect)

this also depends on the surroundings and the light situation.
just an example - HDR with stock camera and no tripod, just held the One X in my hands. (dropbox link)

so yes, in some situations, HDR can produce a better outcome/photo.
just try it out and you'll find for yourself when/where it works best

I heard camera FX does but not sure.
I tried the HDR yest during sunset, my wife had the sun behind her and seriously amazing stuff all you have to do is a hold still for a bit, i took like 10 photos all without any ghosting, its not like Desire HD where you had to really hold still for a normal photo lol!
amazed to say the least, sorry its photos of my girl so i can't share them
Camera360 also bypasses the compression.
But with the last update (1.29) the stock camera app improved as well...
A really nice, upcoming app is Camera FV-5. The developer already announced many improvements/bugfixes for HTC One X.

Hi, i'd like to know how did it improve, is the image compression better? or anything else ?
compared to the previous firmware versions (1.26 & 1.28) the compression isn't that strong any more.
compared to other camera apps however, it's still strong(er), but personally I can live with that.

HDR has nothing to do with ghosting though It just takes properly exposed, overexposed and underexposed shots of the same thing and merges all three.

PS do other phones have this capability ie not the one series or is it fairly unique to us like the multi snapper trigger happy mode

The phone takes three images so if you move the camera after pressing the shutter you will see ghosting. The One X shutter lag is shorter then the DHD that's why it's easier to take HDR with the One X.

yes it does, if you or your subject move you get difference in the three images and hence some ghosting
the fast shutter speed in the One X is helping immensely in this regards

True in a way, but the essence of a HDR image is one being overexposed, hence a slower shutter (or depending, a software EV+ and keeping the same shutter speed).

How would you rate the camera of DHD? Lets say 10 is TOO DAMN GOOD and 1 is VERY BAD.
and how about it if you compare it with Dell streaks camera?
Not good at all. Anything at night will be blurd. Even standing still allowing the camera to fully focus gets you a blurred photo. May have 8mpg but the lens is rubbish therefore you will never have that good of a photo. Video is ok all in all as its 720p.

what about the shots in day light? are they good? i don't take much shots at night but in day and some indoors, so how about them?
Daylight shots are, in my view, superb. Low-light shots are pretty bad, as the other guy said earlier. That's true of all camera phones I've owned though...

Camera: 2/10 (My HD2 take better pictures for sure)

(with blur problems).
HTC really disappoint me...
Now i will whating for the Galaxy S2 release.
Camera: 6/10
Video (daylight): 9/10
Video (low light): 4/10
The quality highly depends on how much light is available, I've taken some awesome camera shots and some which were really poor. If your buying the phone only for 8mpx camera, don't bother. It's not all about the pixels.

completely agree +1
For me the camera is not that good considering 8mp
I see areas of quality in certain parts of the shot with the rest appearing blurred, and yes the lens has been cleaned with the correct type cloth.
My first pictures made me think about the issue of round lens, square picture, the edges all looked blurred and only the centre was focused.
I have read that altering the default settings from auto make a difference, but not for me, it is only used as an emergency camera.
Video is OK, even 720p, but again, not a perfect device.
But when you remember this is primarily a phone saves having multiple devices
I think is great. There is a guide somewhere here you can use for better results

That's because it's a phone with a tiny little sensor. What did you expect? Although most compact digicams aren't much better.
Try a Nokia 808 Pureview... That's about the only way you'll get markedly better low light performance in a phone (because it has a bigger sensor than pretty much every compact camera )

Haha, don't say twice.. I was thinking the same but after today..
My HOX makes really crappy low light photos too. Both my DHD and Sensation camera take better low light pics, main difference is that the HOX-es shutter speed is much quicker. HTC raised HOX camera capabilities sky hi, but It's nothing better in pics quality then older HTC models.
Well, that's my opinion...

Mine also took a photo with one bed side lamp on at night and flash and got a grainy noisey image, my sgs2 took better images at night with flash
HTC probably made it a higher priority to have low blur, which means faster shutter speeds, which means that at night the phone will either amp up the ISO to the max (NOISE) or use LED flash.

I´d like to know it too. The compression is pretty strong and you can see artifacts even on pictures taken with good light.
I downloaded Camera 360 for this reason - adjustable compression (if I remember)
Try igcamera free version, its the best if you ask me, Camera ICS+ is also good.
Cheers.
Wow! I didn't realize how aggressive the compression was until I tested this.
Took two pictures of the same subject, one with each camera app:
Default Camera app: 1.3mb
ICS Camera app: 4.3mb.
ICS camera pic has noticeably better quality.
Why would HTC do this? What is the benefit of making the pictures so small? They did this on the Vivid, too, including video, and it kind of ruined the quality.

Also checkout the different in bit rate when recording with the stock camera and the igcamera or ICS+
You get like 12 mbps in bit rate with the stock and with the others you get 30 or more igcamera has the option to go to 100mbps, the difference is very noticeable.

I generally take portrait or group photos in good lighting conditions.. well this is my take on this..

These three photos were taken one after the other in the same conditions, first one is with the stock camera, second one is with camera 360 and the third one is taken with ICS camera, I prefer the stock, more natural colours in my opinion, what does everyone think. This is the north coast of Ireland.
I'm not a pro by any means, but I think we can all agree that images shot in low light conditions with the HTC one x lack detail and are extremely grainy. The image chip was supposedly going to give us a superior camera experience but after trying the stock camera, ics + and a few others I'm still less than impressed. Not giving up hope yet though that the right software modifications could still make this a great point and shooter, as under perfect lighting it performs extremely well.
I'm currently trying procapture. In direct comparison with other alternatives mentioned here, I am finding the images to be of marginally better quality when pointing and shooting in shades and less than ideal indoor lighting. Although blacks remain too gray for my taste.

The camera takes great pictures under good lighting as examplified by your images. My problem is that for everyday situations, where lighting is usually not ideal, the picture quality is horrendous.

I've tried almost every camera application I can find and, honestly, I find the stock HTC camera app to be the best. Some applications are better in certain situations, but the stock camera app is the best all round. People always complain about the terrible low light pictures but with the exception of the Galaxy S 3 and some of the Xperia range, I've never owned a phone that can take such good photos.
The advert with the sky diver taking videos and photos is ridiculous and misleading though, those videos and pictures would look awful!

Hi
Just wondering, when will the monochrome camera of the two cameras be used in real life scenario.
1.Will it always be used along with colour camera?
2.Will it be used when recording video?
I know wide aperture mode will definitely use both cameras. But for normal photos when I blocked monochrome camera, the colour camera still takes the same picture quality.
It can be used alone, and yes it is used to work with the RGB sensor, as for videos, they both work at the same time

While clicking normal pictures, both sensors are used. The monochrome sensor captures more light and hence, used for improving the shadows and details in a picture.
I haven't blocked the monochrome sensor while taking regular pictures.
If you did, then do post some samples of both scenarios.

I dont see much difference betweeen the two pictures as such as the monochrome sensor is advertised as a big deal. But really we need more samples. I will do what I can when I get time.
Ultimately, I believe that the RGB camera is a real good one as we are getting good pictures out of the single camera! That's nice.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
I've seen several of these comparisons, and I often prefer the stock camera images over the Gcam images. The ones of the toy car and phone in that video are prime examples.
I suggest learning manual controls. Even if you don't use it in normal shooting, understanding what's going on with settings will help you take better photos. Remember, only you know what kind of photo you want, not some random programmer that never met you. Because of that, auto modes can be hit and miss, and understanding manual controls will allow you to quickly adjust for those times auto mode isn't working for you.

OIS is over-hyped anyway for a phone. The range of motion to correct isn't very big with such a small sensor. I've seen a test video of the electronic stabilization, and it worked extremely well.

From https://www.blog.google/products/pixel/see-light-night-sight/
If your subject moves during the capture, Night Sight can adapt to prevent a modest amount of motion from ruining the shot. Instead of capturing one bright and blurry photo, Night Sight captures an equal amount of light over a burst of many photos that are dark but sharp. By merging this burst, Night Sight prevents motion blur and brightens the photo, giving you a bright and sharp photo.

My V20 has it and I can get maybe a notch slower shutter speed than without. Not much difference. If it was something like Pentax's full frame DSLR, that gives 5 stops of shake reduction, that would be a big difference.
