Motorola Cliq 2 finally gets Android 2.3 Gingerbread update - Defy General

http://blog.gsmarena.com/motorola-cliq-2-finally-gets-android-2-3-gingerbread-update/
Motorola has finally released Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for its year and a half old Cliq 2 smartphone.
Will the Defy get such great surprise?
The cliq 2 has similar hardware of Defy, but with a qwerty keyboard in addition....

T Mobile has just paused Defy Upgrade upto 2.2.1 .... Hence do we see them updating to Ginger Bread 2.3 ? Hope for the best !

FTFY!
This was probably an error or something, it's not Motorola's style.

No I confirmed this on motorola website:

No, no, I didn't say that you were wrong, I've read the news too. But the fact that Motorola is offering an update to an older phone... Seems almost like an error from them .

So when are we getting 2.3 ?

There's already talks that 2.4 should be out soon.

Actually, 3.0 is Honeycomb. 2.4 is Gingerbread (kinda like how 2.0 and 2.1 were both Eclair).
OP, there is no set date on when we will get 2.3
I have heard recent rumors, now that 2.4 is just 2.3 Gingerbread with fixes/tweaks, it will be out in April/May, and launch with new devices. And that current phones will have to wait until Summer to get the official 2.4 Gingerbread update from their carrier and manufacturer.
Honeycomb is just for Tablets and is 3.0
"Ice Cream Sandwich" is the MAJOR update for Android phones, due out last half of the year.

I honestly believe the improvements over 2.2 aren't too significant.
It would bring the new sense to our phones though, and for me that's what I'm mostly waiting for.
really the only thing I miss is the copy paste. I use it all the time and the way it's done now just sucks.

From what I've read it's no different.
Different keyboard if you're someone who uses the stock keyboard.
New sense that to me doesn't look as nice as 2.2.
I don't think we're missing out.
2.3 is gingerbread. 2.4 should be iced gingerbread to bridge the gap between Apps for 3.0 honeycomb and 2.3 gingerbread. Basically 2.4 on phones will help run the 3.0 Apps on said phones

Nope, as of right now it's for tablets, but they are releasing a honeycomb update for phones eventually.
*facedesk*
Just assume that you're not getting 2.3 from Sprint and HTC.
Quite simply, nobody from HTC or Sprint has said anything about when 2.3 will be arriving for EVO, or if it even will. Nobody knows. All the talk on XDA is just pure speculation.

Ice Cream Sandwich is Coming..COULD BE FOR DEFY?

In Q4, 2011, Google intend to combine Honeycomb for tables and Gingerbread for smart phones into one universal OS. Ice Cream Sandwich.
Developers will be able to account for all form factors within this same version of the OS. This seems to be the end of the OS fragmentation that has plagued the Android system since its release! The announcement has been made around the same time that Windows Phone manufacturers Microsoft announce a universal OS in the form of Windows 8, and Apple's iOS5, which means universal operating systems are the way of the future. But the question is, will the Defy get some?

We may not even get Gingerbread (the leaked one is supposedly for developing for the defy2). I wouldn't get my hopes high for Icecream at all.

no way man! telus just released a version of the defy a couple of months ago.we've got at least two more years of love coming!
i am hoping as well... but here in indonesia, not even gingerbread
There's absolutely no point in getting excited till there's even confirmation of getting Gingerbread.
Right, Q4 huh... so that's end of the year. Then add a few months of delays and small scale release, that's mid 2012. Then add a year on that for motorola being slowpokes with new releases.... that's mid 2013. I don't know about you, but as much as I love my defy I'll probably be having a new phone around then rather than getting excited over what will at that point already be old news.

Man you said the right situation in motorola process , BUT even if they didn't release it for defy , they might unlock the bootloader, like samsung galaxy S2.
tAKE lOOK Here:
Samsung Sends Free Galaxy S2 To Hackers For Inspiration
According to the company, it has already sent a free Galaxy S2 to the CyanogenMod team as part of the plan.
http://www.itproportal.com/2011/06/13/samsung-sends-free-galaxy-s2-hackers-inspiration/#8
so i hope we can wait for something cool later time.
It's still possible, when CyanogenMod 8 comes...
Maybe this?
Ok so maybe Motorola will launch a new Defy. This time more powerful. So we will buy it and have that with running Android 4 and this one as an old phone with CM version of the new Android tweaked for it.
I personally use 2 phones. Primary smartphone Defy and secondly a phone only Nokia (no camera, radio, internet). But i would like using 2 smartphones. Actually that is the future. So in my case i can wait for a Defy2 and than keep this as well
Keep in mind that a smartphone's life is somewhere between 2-4 years. Battery/hardware and software wise . But who knows the Defy can prove even more resistant ....

The current fragmentation issue has nothing to do with Tablet and Handset form factors. I understood fragmentation is about manufacturers putting too much layers on top of OS to make their own version of Android i.e. Sense, TouchWhiz, Motorla, and so on.
User experience is a science, now imagine how much damage these manufacturers do to an OS that no one would want to learn how to use them. That is why many people would want to use handsets from the same manufacturer. Android introduced a new market and after few years everyone involved realising the cons and pros of it as no one had the experience working in such market model before.
My prediction is... Most manufacturers will give up putting their own layers for three main reasons:
1. Manufactures eventually can't catch up with the progress of Android's development and it would become a complex and expensive process to have.
2. The cost of hardware will significantly will be reduced, that means smaller manufactures giving stock Android start stealing market from the big boys.
3. Future Android versions would become rich in user experience that the cost of putting layers on top of already a rich interface is no longer justifiable.
and hopefully with this, release of OS will be much faster due to the more vanilla usage of Android instead of each company spending time and money on 'fragmenting' the OS....and devs like the MIUI and CM guys (plus all the other solo devs) can start porting it over much faster and easier.....and leave the fragmenting and customising to the community!
true
but if each developer releasing their own os like miui and cmd and etc you will never have stability in the os.
thats why i always stick to the official os.
((consider Camera issues and AGps fixes plus notworking parts in os properly))
Ice Cream Sandwich will be released this October/November.. There's even a Nexus S shipped on EBay which has ICS!!!!! Here it is!!: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3Pb6IyFvfg&feature=player_embedded
I'm really hoping to see it on Motorola Defy!!
Btw I noticed that all Android versions have a codename based on deserts..
Cupcake 1.5
Donut 1.6
Eclair (a cake) 2.1
Froyo (frozen yogurt) 2.2
Gingerbread 2.3
Honeycomb 3.0
Ice Cream Sandwich 2.4/4.0
lol
I think there will be a custom rom, but i donĀ“t think we get it official.
Sorry for my bad English!
Julian
I don't think T-Mobile US Defy owners will ever see an official Gingerbread update, or anyone else for that matter.
Why would Motorola put one out when Defy+ is here? Defy team was moved to working on Defy+ long ago, that's why we still have a buggy official Froyo. They're just not working on Defy any longer.
They re-released the Defy calling it a Defy+ for the sake of a Gingerbread update. What makes you think they wont do the same for ICS. And ofcourse the Defy wont even get Gingerbread forget ICS.
Sent from my MB525 using Tapatalk
there is no question of getting official GB update in future. But I m sure there will be CM8 for defy
Anyway, CM8 sounds way better than a crappy ICS released by Motorola .
cannot w8 4 the ICS . even if our defy will not get an ICS update i'll buy a new phone

[Q] when 2.3 comes officialy ?

hey guys any news about official 2.3 coming on defy ???
thanx in advanced
i dont think they will release an official 2.3 to defy...defy+ will be launched very soon...which comes with GB..
AFAIK they are busy with the 2.3 Defy-upgrade, so it may come.

where did u get that news ? ofcourse its on air news flying here and there that gingerbread update is on d way . bt no concrete news regarding it . so asking in a way is there any proof regarding that ?
The presently available gingerbread updates(leaked) are for defy plus..
If they were going to offer an official update for defy it would have supported GREEN LENS cameras as well because they can't just abandon green lens defy.
Since green lens is not supported it looks like official 2.3 will be made available only for defy plus.
Short answer: Never
But i think on red lens devices, the defy+ rom will work smoothly

Well, HTC said some crap like that about the Desire not getting 2.3 - they changed their mind a little bit later.
I'll wait until it appears here what will happen to the Defy regarding the elusive Gingerbread update.
i hope that`s true...i`m using custom roms now but will be nice to have official ginger on defy...maybe the devs will make wonders from it
Who cares if bootloader gets hacked and CM7.1 is there.
I care, because the Defy with green lens will be fully supported. Nevertheless, CM7 is a great option too.

[Q] Shouldn't there be a defy+ forum as well?

Just a thought, even if they are pretty similar devices, shouldn't there be a defy+ forum?
Thing is, the forum feels a little messy with both phones in it.
I think it will be useful too

the only difference is that the defy+ roms dont include the module for the soc module (which most of the defys have). other than that, they are similar devices. i dont see why we should create a new forum, that would be a lot more messy.
At this time the Defy and Defy+ are very similar, so we don't need a Defy+ forum. But Google said that ALL devices running on 2.3 Gingerbread WILL GET ICE CREAM SANDWICH!
The Defy+ have 2.3 and born with it! So, the Defy+ will get Ice cream Sandwich, and when the Defy+ will run on ICS, at this time we will need a Defy+ forum! Because we can't have a same forum for two devices with one on 2.2 and other on 4.0...
---------- Post added at 02:40 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:38 PM ----------
Motorola, unlock OUR bootloaders
I think we at least need a subforum.
Now its not very clear what roms are compatible with the Defy +
We've litterally got the same phones a part from different lenses and a stock overclock so i consider the Defy+ as a Defy, and commercially, as an opportunity for Motorola to take the p*ss xD
(Maybe a subforum...maybe..^^)
Wait ICS on Defy+ for a Defy+ forum
Raphael, you didn't read correctly : MOST, not ALL 2.3 devices will get ICS.
As for the subforum idea I'm all for it.
Yes but:
Some devices born in 2.2 and update on 2.3 will get ICS
The Defy+ have 2.3 and is BORN in 2.3
A device have minimum one update, Motorola give always one update + Motorola is Google now
= Defy+ will have ICS!

There is no minimum # of updates on a device. Sadly, there are several current 2.3 devices that look fairly unlikely to get ICS.

[INFO] No offical ICS for Defy or defy+

Motorola Have published update info ics.
Here is the defy part.
DEFY MB525 (Europe & MEA)
Will remain on Android 2.2.
DEFY+ MB526
Will remain on Android 2.3.
DEFY MINI
Will remain on Android 2.3.
So its all down to the Cyan guys.

Desire z with the g2 rom (asop) would be a great phone. Not a fan of sense.
All hope has gone that was the last nail on the coffin. I will always use cyan but would be nice for updated libs and bits.
Think now my defy and atrix arnt getting updates and never have. I wont be buying Motorola again. Love the hardware but blur sucks aand no updates is a real deal breaker.

Stupid
Just when we tought Moto's buy by Google will change smth. Maybe it's to early for that.
Regarding the update i think there are some minimal requirements for Android 4.0. And they give you the same bull**** Samsung and HTC gave. The hw does not support Android 4.0, the hardware does not support Android 4.0 with our interface.
But this doesn't make sense. Acording to their update schedule they release ICS for similar devices just because they are new. For example the original Atrix gets nothing inspite it's dual core, 1 GB RAM.
The human thing to do is open the bootloader. But that's not going to happen is it?
So goodbye Moto, welcome back HTC for me... I wll keep the defy because it' such a nice phone. Still the RAZR MAXX is great, i love the battery. Hope it doesn't even come to Europe so i won't regret not buying it.
