[Q] G2 Touchscreen problem - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi. I just bought the G2 over the internet and I observed what I deem to be a touch issue. I first noticed the problem while using the on-screen keyboard, where an entire column of keys won't respond to touches, though when I go on landscape mode, they do. I tested the screen using doodle applications and found that a part of the screen stretching from top to bottom doesn't respond to touches [see photo embedded].
Are there any hotfixes/troubleshooting tips that I could do? Or is it really a hardware problem (e.g. broken digitizer) which requires repair/replacement? Having the phone returned means a grueling process of shipping and waiting, so I'd like to find out first if there's anything I could do from my end. Thanks!

I think that this is an hardware problem, I have this with my Xperia X1 too, but not so much
Sent from my chair.

probably need a new digitizer, about $20 from ebay, about 30min of your time. i had one that you could draw a line horizontally across the screen exactly halfway and the top wouldnt work but the bottom would. in landscape or portrait. new digitizer fix it

[Q] Xperia arc screen too sensitive?

Hi all,
I simply love this phone, but I'm facing a situation that my screen is too sensitive. The home screens were so sensitive a few programs were started without my knowledge. It got better after I switched to Launcher Pro.
However, it is still too sensitive in other areas. When I'm scrolling down, say, the apps in Market, I'll always end up selecting a few items accidentally before I reach the end of the list.
I've used HTC Desire in the past and I'm quite sure the problem is not due to me.
Does anyone else face the same problem, or I have a hardware problem? Or software problem? Can I be tweaked by any means?
Any feedback would be useful! Thanks!!!
KG
I faced this problem before... while swiping, apps accidentally open. But instead of "too sensitive" i thought it's insensitive... because a short swipe was sometimes interpreted as a tap (maybe because the swipe was not fully detected?).
Anyway, I had 2 layers on my device... the pre-applied sheet and another screen protector that came with the box.
I removed the second layer, leaving only the pre-applied sheet, and all is well again... no more accidental "taps"

Dude, you mean the cause was the screen protector that came with the phone???

For my case, maybe 2 layers is just too thick
I'm having the same problem. And that solution seems to make sense. I would give it a try, but if the problem still occurs, I'd be wasting one screen protector..

That was how I solved my problem. I actually put on the spare screen protector because when I got the set I didn't realize there was already a pre-applied layer.
Don't blame me if it doesn't work for you
perhaps some of you guys just have the shakes?! ;-p
I guess the screen is never to perfect for everyone.
kargtan, I've noticed the same about the tap sensitivity - I often accidentally "tap" when I mean to swipe. Came from an iPhone 3g and didn't notice this on that device. Might be a matter of getting used to it, not sure. Have you gotten any feedback from others in other forums?
I've noticed this too, and put it down to the screen protector. It's not android OS causing it, never had the problem on my htc hero...
However, now that i've gotten used to the phone it doesnt do it any more - guess my brain has automatically trained itself to drag the screen a little bit more firmly or something.
One thing i have noticed about the arc is: because the bezel around the screen is so thin, i often accidentally launch apps just by holding it. My fingers wrap around slightly & touch the edges of the screen.
Does any of you have problems while trying to swap a screen from another and instead of swapping you get like a "bounce" and stay on the same screen? because that happens to me all the time, I came from an htc Legend and this is making me crazy !
btw, this happens to me if I hold the phone with my right hand and try to do the swapping with my thumb, the only way to get it right is to hold the phone with my left hand and use the index of my right hand
Screen too/not sensitive
Hi guys,
I think the problem arises from the slowness of the phone, not "too sensitive". I used to use the HTC Desire in the past and I was very used to the screen scrolling very quickly. In contrast, the arc is slower and hence the screens don't scroll as fast and hence my way of handling the Desire would cause the problems stated.
I did a few things since my last posting and it seems better now:
Replace the SE Home with Launcher Pro - this seems to have improved on the speed of the phone, and hence better responsiveness to the touch.
Rooted the phone and uninstalled some stock programs.
Removed useless widgets on the desktops.
Adjusted my way of scrolling as someone has suggested.
This is quite frustrating at times, especially so because other than this problem, this phone is a gem, especially its form factor, the sound quality and most importantly, the quality of the camera.
I might sell the phone once the company issues me with a Blackberry (DANG!), but I am kinda unwilling because I have been taking lots of photos with my Android phones and these photos are generally well-liked by my Facebook friends.
agree with bezel thing and hard to use thumb.
noticed arc screen (the screen guard perhaps ) easily get oily and slippery.
had to wipe phone and wash hand so often that make me like some sort of disorder.
Don't know why you guys seem to be having problems... I don't have any issues with my screen swipes at all... smooth and fast.. both on stock and Launcher Pro..
Same deal here. But that's because the screen is sensitive beyond the display area including the black border, and the edge is too narrow. When I use one hand swiping or tapping, the palm of my hand touches the black border. The screen registers two touches in quick succession and thus jumps.
In Phone keypad, enter *#*#7378423#*#* (the numbers mean SERVICE word in keypad), you can go into test mode. Select [Service test]->[Touch Screen] to test the badly touch screen of SE Phones.
You will discover when you swipe the edge of touch screen, the touched result is very not satisfied. The lines you swiped will not accurate and appear like jags, or stick on the edge of the screen.
The touch panel made in China...? ;-)
Me too!
Hey!
i also have a xperia tipo....and i too have the sensitive problem
Could also be a kernel problem?
I remember I installed a kernel a while back that would make my screen hypersensitive; just hovering over the screen would already activate it!
I don't remember which one, it was back in the GB days. But I'm pretty sure it can be changed in the kernel.

[Request?] Possible Nav Bar alternative

So before my GNEX i used to own a Motorola Atrix 4G, so one time when i was flashing some img files through fastboot, by mistake i overwrote one of the img files that store the phone's stock touch calibration, so as soon as i turned on the phone i noticed that wherever i touched the screen, the reaction was as if i was touching the screen 2cm above, and to my surprise, even below the screen on the black frame there was also touch response for 2cm above.
So I concluded that the entire glass sheet over the display is capable of detecting touch input, but it is calibrated to take input only within the display itself.
This got me thinking, what if the GNEX's touch surface had the same property, what if we could recalibrate the area of the bottom frame and possibly map (back, home, and recents) buttons into them and get rid of the space consuming,burn-in inducing nav-bar.
Discuss
considering the led is housed there I really doubt it's possible
But maybe to the left and right of the LED... I like the idea, man, like the Palm Phones, we could just remember that left of LED is home and right of LED is back or long press Menu on left side for home, I dunno, but I like the idea!
Messing with my old thunderbolt, I can start flicking down the navbar before my finger makes it to the actual screen, it works just above it.

Touch should work over the LED area because technically it is uniform over the entire touch surface.
I understand the logic of your conclusion, but think of it this way, the display is technically the same thing, its a display with the touch surface a few millimeters above it. The reason there's no touch response on the frame around the display is because the touch response is calibrated to respond within those perimeters.
Cool idea. Any idea how to go about it?
I derived this theory from what happened with me on my Atrix
I was hoping someone with knowledge around this field would atvleast shed a light on whether this is possible or not. I, with my very limited knowledge around this field compared to most of the developers on this forum, believe that this might be possible if the GNEX had a similar approach to the screen touch calibration as the atrix and if we can have access to these drivers.
I disparately wish I could start resolving deleimas like these myself with practice and time, but in the meantime, who thinks this is a plausible idea?

Cracked screen

Hello!
Today dropped my phone and screen got covered in spider web. The display itself looks fine, but its covered it spiderweb. The touchscreen doesnt respond at all.
What do i need to do now? I looked at local repair shops, they ask atleast 100 euros. But on ebay i can find lcd display+screen digitizer for 55 euros shipped, or screen digitizer starting from 10 dollars!
Can i buy only screen digitizer (as i understand that top layer of glass thats cracked is screen digitizer?) and replace it? Or changing LCD display along with screen digitizer is a must?
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NOIR-VITRE-...Pièces_de_rechange_outils&hash=item27f98e5d31
So this should fit..right? And are all 3 models LS970, E975 and e973 really same size? Cuz i`ve read people have got smaller screens than original from some sellers on amazon.
Replacing a digitizer is pretty hard and time consuming, that's why people usually replace the whole lcd+digitizer+glass assembly. You will also need adhesive and a heater/appropriate tools. It can be a great learning experience if you don't mind potentially busting your phone. There are no shortage of instructionnal videos on youtube on the subject.
Also, a new G2 is only 190$US .... Just saying ...

As i have two other phones. The g2 mini with Tegra and a razrHD. I'll give a try, thanks for the tip.
Well, i ended up ordering that LCD+Digitzer from ebay. Everything was fine for 2 months, now i have quite large spot that doesnt respond to touches. (See attachment) i already tried disconecting the lcd and digitizer..still same. Is it worth trying to flash another rom? I already flashed stock kdz (had stock before too..)
This happened just today, right after ghost touches went crazy and rondomly oppening everything.
EDIT: That spot is changing sizes..form remains, but it got a bit smaller now. Its truly weird. I put the phone outside for few minutes (its +9C outside) and touchscreen works fine now! What is going on?
EDIT 2: After few minutes of usage, the spot is coming back

I had dropped my LG (more than a couple of times) on its face and it seemed to suffer stroke-like symptoms: one side of the screen was completely dead to touch, and the rest of the screen would occasionally act as though I was touching everywhere which opened programs and messed with the keyboard. I was stubborn and just lived with it and over time, it stopped trying open programs and whatnot. Recently, dropped it again, this time it was a bit more serious. Still no visible damage to the screen, but the "dead spot" moved to the centre of the screen, and again, occasionally tries to open programs and add words to my messages.
At first I thought it all could be related to a software issue. Unfortunately, after installing new ROMS, it never fixed the problem. I bought a digitaliser screen from Ebay as well. I'm waiting on the adhesive tape still so I can't say if this will fix anything. I kind of have a suspicion that its a loose connector (the top middle part of the screen gets super hot only after a couple of minutes of being left on).
I'm just wondering if you have tried taking it apart again to recheck the wiring? I think we may have similar problems (your situation is the first I've come by on the internet that is anywhere close to what's happening to my screen). Thanks so much!

htc Desire 610 Touch screen issue

My 5 month old htc Desire 610 has encountered some Touch Screen issues. It has two "blank" or "broken" vertical lines where the touch screen does not respond and sometimes momentarily the entire touch screen doesn't work. For the past month, applying pressure to the rear upper right hand corner, behind the front facing camera, seemed to provide a temporary fix until now. I have ordered and replaced the entire touch/display but the problem still occurs. It is driving me MAD.
I think what caused it was a silicon case which I had, and when I was bored I would pull it off and on starting in the upper right corner.
The pictures I attached shows when I drag my finger slowly from left or right, a circle is made and the size depends on how long I left my finger there, my phone thinks I am leaving my finger just left of the two lines before continuing on the other side of the touch-screen-blank lines.
This all sounds confusing but help is very appreciated
I found the problem!!
I took the phone apart and placed a small padding behind the touch screen connector (the one coming from the top) and BANG! It works.
This may solve other touch screen issues out there.
Same Issue - Any Advice?

I'm having the same issue, also have a silicone BodyGlove case which I also flip on and off when I'm bored and it's started screwing with the touchscreen. How'd you get the case of the phone open, what material (i presume something non-conductive) did you use for the padding, and do you have any pictures? I plan to document this procedure when I do it and post for reference. My phone is just over 7 months old, and I don't want to have to buy a new one just yet.
Thanks,
Thanks worked

Top of the touchscreen doesn't work

Hello,
I think than since my phone fell, the top of the touchscreen doesn't work... I can't pull the drawer of notifications, except by changing the rotation of 180 ° ,but in this case, the navigation buttons do not work ...
Look the picture, it is a test of the touchscreen with an app
Thank you so much for help
Sounds similar to a problem I had with my G3 when I dropped it, only difference is that the glass screen broke too, sounds like a broken digitizer (I'm no expert, correct me if I'm wrong) to me. Only way of fixing a broken digitizer that I know of is by replacing it, cost me 130 euros at the time.
I had this exact same issue.
My battery failed me so I purchased an 'authentic' one from eBay, it swelled up and raised my screen, this raise then made the very top part of my screen (Exact same as yours) unresponsive. Problem went after I inserted a new battery and glued the screen back down. Might be worth investigating.
