[Q] Xperia arc screen too sensitive? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I simply love this phone, but I'm facing a situation that my screen is too sensitive. The home screens were so sensitive a few programs were started without my knowledge. It got better after I switched to Launcher Pro.
However, it is still too sensitive in other areas. When I'm scrolling down, say, the apps in Market, I'll always end up selecting a few items accidentally before I reach the end of the list.
I've used HTC Desire in the past and I'm quite sure the problem is not due to me.
Does anyone else face the same problem, or I have a hardware problem? Or software problem? Can I be tweaked by any means?
Any feedback would be useful! Thanks!!!
KG

I faced this problem before... while swiping, apps accidentally open. But instead of "too sensitive" i thought it's insensitive... because a short swipe was sometimes interpreted as a tap (maybe because the swipe was not fully detected?).
Anyway, I had 2 layers on my device... the pre-applied sheet and another screen protector that came with the box.
I removed the second layer, leaving only the pre-applied sheet, and all is well again... no more accidental "taps"

Dude, you mean the cause was the screen protector that came with the phone???

For my case, maybe 2 layers is just too thick

I'm having the same problem. And that solution seems to make sense. I would give it a try, but if the problem still occurs, I'd be wasting one screen protector..

That was how I solved my problem. I actually put on the spare screen protector because when I got the set I didn't realize there was already a pre-applied layer.
Don't blame me if it doesn't work for you

perhaps some of you guys just have the shakes?! ;-p

I guess the screen is never to perfect for everyone.

kargtan, I've noticed the same about the tap sensitivity - I often accidentally "tap" when I mean to swipe. Came from an iPhone 3g and didn't notice this on that device. Might be a matter of getting used to it, not sure. Have you gotten any feedback from others in other forums?

I've noticed this too, and put it down to the screen protector. It's not android OS causing it, never had the problem on my htc hero...
However, now that i've gotten used to the phone it doesnt do it any more - guess my brain has automatically trained itself to drag the screen a little bit more firmly or something.
One thing i have noticed about the arc is: because the bezel around the screen is so thin, i often accidentally launch apps just by holding it. My fingers wrap around slightly & touch the edges of the screen.

Does any of you have problems while trying to swap a screen from another and instead of swapping you get like a "bounce" and stay on the same screen? because that happens to me all the time, I came from an htc Legend and this is making me crazy !
btw, this happens to me if I hold the phone with my right hand and try to do the swapping with my thumb, the only way to get it right is to hold the phone with my left hand and use the index of my right hand

Screen too/not sensitive
Hi guys,
I think the problem arises from the slowness of the phone, not "too sensitive". I used to use the HTC Desire in the past and I was very used to the screen scrolling very quickly. In contrast, the arc is slower and hence the screens don't scroll as fast and hence my way of handling the Desire would cause the problems stated.
I did a few things since my last posting and it seems better now:
Replace the SE Home with Launcher Pro - this seems to have improved on the speed of the phone, and hence better responsiveness to the touch.
Rooted the phone and uninstalled some stock programs.
Removed useless widgets on the desktops.
Adjusted my way of scrolling as someone has suggested.
This is quite frustrating at times, especially so because other than this problem, this phone is a gem, especially its form factor, the sound quality and most importantly, the quality of the camera.
I might sell the phone once the company issues me with a Blackberry (DANG!), but I am kinda unwilling because I have been taking lots of photos with my Android phones and these photos are generally well-liked by my Facebook friends.

agree with bezel thing and hard to use thumb.
noticed arc screen (the screen guard perhaps ) easily get oily and slippery.
had to wipe phone and wash hand so often that make me like some sort of disorder.

Don't know why you guys seem to be having problems... I don't have any issues with my screen swipes at all... smooth and fast.. both on stock and Launcher Pro..

Same deal here. But that's because the screen is sensitive beyond the display area including the black border, and the edge is too narrow. When I use one hand swiping or tapping, the palm of my hand touches the black border. The screen registers two touches in quick succession and thus jumps.

In Phone keypad, enter *#*#7378423#*#* (the numbers mean SERVICE word in keypad), you can go into test mode. Select [Service test]->[Touch Screen] to test the badly touch screen of SE Phones.
You will discover when you swipe the edge of touch screen, the touched result is very not satisfied. The lines you swiped will not accurate and appear like jags, or stick on the edge of the screen.
The touch panel made in China...? ;-)

Me too!
Hey!
i also have a xperia tipo....and i too have the sensitive problem

Could also be a kernel problem?
I remember I installed a kernel a while back that would make my screen hypersensitive; just hovering over the screen would already activate it!
I don't remember which one, it was back in the GB days. But I'm pretty sure it can be changed in the kernel.

screen not sensitive: manufacturing fault or unreal expectations ??

every review i've read online before i bought the unit was boasting about how "finger-friendly" the TP2 was, and that you could lightly swipe your finger across it to navigate the menu and that the touchscreen was very sensitive and whatnot
however after 2 weeks of use i find that to be relatively untrue. i've got to apply a fair amount of pressure on the screen to get it to register my input. of course, i'm posting this because i'm afraid that i might be damaging the screen in the process
i have no basis for comparison actually, my only 2 other touchscreen devices at home are an iphone and a cowon s9, both use capacitive screens. i always knew there was a big difference between capacitive screens and resistive screens, i just didn't know it was THIS huge. i can actually slide my finger lightly over the iphone's surface and its registered properly. the sliding probably feels smoother as its glass, but i can live with the TP2's plastic. what do you guys think ? should i get it checked out at the HTC store ?? its on the other side of town, don't wanna waste a trip as if its not a problem
oh yeah and just to get this out of the way, the screen is a membrane and not a hard surface right ?? everytime i press on the screen using my finger or the stylus, i can feel the screen slightly moving down, can also see the surface getting slightly dented at the point my finger pushes it if looking at it from a certain angle.
ps before somebody asks: i only got to test the keyboard at the telco store, some punk had cracked the screen of the display set, so i didn't know about this screen issue until i actually purchased the set
sorry for the long post, but i'd really appreciate any comments
TIA
Well, I don't have an Iphone so i can't tell you about how it compares with the TP2, however, i found the display to be much better than the one on my old XDA. It will probably never as good as a capacitive device like the touchpad on my laptop, but I found it to work very well. You have to apply a certain amount of pressue to the display, because it reacts on pressure, so I guess there is nothing wrong with that. I also see a small dent when I use the stylus and press the display. I cannot confirm the screen slightly going down when pressing it.
To summarize it, i use the Stylus 90% of the time. It glides much better on the display than my finger does so the overall experience is slightly better when using a stylus. Plus i don't get any greasy fingerprints on my display.
However the 10% I use my fingers to work on it (and 25% of that 10% is spent on polishing I found it to work pretty well, so in general I don't think that the reviews were off when it comes to finger usability.
What you are describing is probably normal. Resistive screens do require pressure. The TP2 tends to require less pressure than others, but nonetheless it does require it. There's no comparison if you compare it to a capacitive screen device because those don't require pressure at all.
The flexing of the screen that you described is something all resistive screens have. Again, if you compare the screen flex of the TP2 to earlier HTC devices, it's greatly improved.
To be on the safe side, go to a store and try out other resistive screen devices and see if you experience the same thing as your own. Then you'll know what is considered "normal".
thanks for the replies, i'll probably head down to my telco's store and see if they've replaced the display set then.
any other comments ??
You know I thought the same, waiting for a cab to increase the sensitivity because at the moment its quite annoying pressing buttons more than once...
From a few years to nowadays i´ve always used QTEK/HTC devices, my latest one is, ofcourse, HTC RHODIUM, the rom it has installed is RUU_Rhodium_HTC_PTG_1.19.410.0_Radio_Rhodium_3.44.25.27_Signed_Ship, and the screen is very sensitive and responsive, i´m just very pleased with it overall, it´s the best.
Cheers.

you don't need .cab
just change in registry...
HKLM/drivers/Touch Driver/pressurethreshold, (default=10000)
(I might not remember perfectly, but it's something like that)
try this?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=469865
this might help just re align your screen again using little pressure then your screen will not need some much pressure to work.
I have found the this not only aligns the screen but the pressure as well.
mine I just have to lightly touch it and dont have to press very much at all.
Cheers

Touch screen shaking when finger hold

Usually when I am browsing through a long list or web page, I hold my finger on the screen. Screen will shake rapidly at this time. I have tried 3 of them and all having the same problem. Any solution to fix it?

If you mean something like a small change on screen brightness ,you can try to set brightness to full. That seems to worked for me.

It might be a stupid suggestion, but when you hold your finger on the screen for more than 2-3 seconds, don't you start to mark the text? hence the screen picks up the minute shaking of your finger? If you move your finger without releasing the screen when it shakes I believe you start to mark text for copy/paste??
I might have misunderstood the problem entirely, so please be gentle
+1.
Got the same problem and looking for a solution.
The touch screen is really really bad i have a lot of problems with the touch screen. I don't know if it's software or hardware problem. SE doesn't say anything about this.
It's really annoying when playing games or typing really fast. it doesn't track your finger properly.
This has to take media attention so SE will be forced talk about it. i love that they are trying to be dev friendly at all. but this issue isn't making me happy.
I always do this when I browsing a long text and wanted to scroll slowly. The shaking problem always make me dizzy.
I also encounter problem with typing too.
probably a touch screen driver issue... it thinks your moving your finger up and down slightly when really it's stationary. just take your finger off of the screen when you want to read something. there's no need to have to keep your finger there anyways

It's not about putting your finger on the screen. there are serious problems with the touch screen. i made a youtube vids to show the problem
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwr0rFzCU4k
SE has to give answers about the problems i'm getting tired of the screen issues.
Try superpaint lite, it seems to be program's fault not the screen
I replied @ youtube and also putting it here. I tried it but it doesn't recognize if finger points switch to fast.
This also happens with all other apps and games like SE Launcher, Angry birds, taptap revolutions, GB keyboard ....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1034319 here is also a thread
Just upgraded the firmware from SE and claimed to fix some bugs and improve stability. Nothing change for the touch screen issue. Don't know whether Sony didn't notice the problem or it's just an unfixable hardware defect.

The problem with touch screen depends on how you touch as well...
If you touch by your thumb with full finger touch, the sharking will occur, the more area that your finger attach to the screen mean more sharking
now change your habit, touch the screen with only by the edge of your finger or with your smaller finger the screen will hold stable.
Their a limit area of your finger attach to the screen so that the screen will keep stable, over that limit area the screen will sharking.

Zoom in?
I got a lot of this when browsing too. Esp. with opera, if I need to open it in new tab, I need a long press on link. And often if the icon/text isn't bigger than my finger touch size, the screen will shake.
Unfortunately, the best way I found is to zoom in.
hmmmm...
It's so sad that we need to change our behavior to coop with a device that supposed to make our life easier.
I find that all the embeded apps provided by SE do not have the shaking problem. I guess SE do know about the issue so they made some tweat on them.
My finger tips are quite larger (as I play bowling).

Its the stupid, thick, shatter proof film thats making touch functions go crazy. Peel that crap off your screen and the device will work as intended.
I had the same issue with my x10, because the film does not allow for a good connection between your finger and the screen, the screen detects multiple touches.
I removed the film (Thats does not protect against scratches and is actually more prone to them) and the screen was absolutely PERFECT.
Does HTC need a shatter proof film on their Mineral Glass? NO so neither does the Arc, just remove that junk and put a good screen protector on it.

Because you say that your old x10 had this problem as well?

Touch screen sensitivity..do i have possibly have a problem?

it started out a few days ago. I started to feel like my touchscreen is not as responsive as usual.
I noticed numerous times it felt like my swipes as well as my touch (say when i want to open a specific app) are not being registered properly. Now the way i recall my samsung galaxy s, it would register a click sometimes even when you're hovering about 0.5mm to 1mm above it. So with that in mind, i thought i would try to do that with my one x. I would hover my hand slightly above it, and no response - NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE PROBLEM JUST YET.
Anyways, seeing as hovering over it doesn't work (which is not a problem imo) i would proceed to touching the screen, however i touch it without applying any pressure, i could even swipe and it WOULD NOT switch over to the next screen. I could touch the screen and the application would NOT register my fingers. However, after applying more pressure it suddenly gets registered. Even though the pressure i have to apply is just slight, Isn't this how a resistive touchscreen is supposed to behave and not a captivate touchscreen?
I thought that's because of my screen protector, i took it off and gave it 2~3 days and the issue remained.
Now my question(maybe even a favor) to you guys is as follows.
1. Try to click on an app, however, do this without applying any pressure, simply touching your touchscreen (might have to do this slowly). Does it respond? Or is it the same with with you as it is with me?
2. Please report in on the behavior of your touchscreen.
NOTE: I just want to know if my touchscreen is behaving normally or not. I do recall a better experience, actually if anything i was very happy with my one x's screen and this is simply annoying. Espeically when i have it on a soft surface and i push my screen, normally a soft surface tends to bulge in upon pressure.
It could take three touches for that freaking thing to register it if my phone is lying on a pullover or whatever else that's soft. Lately i'm not really happy with how webpages scroll up or down either, feels as if my swipes are lightly registered thus a sluggish movement upward or downward.. I hope this is not yet another issue that i have to deal with because my unit already had a wifi defect and, despite being happy with this device it might be my last. It's just too troublesome. Unless my stupid provider replaces it but i could keep dreaming.

0,5 - 1mm ? do you even realize how big this distance is? No way the SGS would register that... or react on that. (I come from that phone too)
with that in mind, my One X is much more responsive as the SGS or any other phone I had.
And no, I do not need to press. As the slightest pressure gives my screen ripples. not possible.
Either try another kernel if you have some custom one, I know there was some problems with those sometimes. Or factory reset if you are stock and then return it?

Well maybe i exaggerated the hovering part but within a certain (very small distance, probably 0,2 maybe even 0,1 the screen would react).
I've been from viper, to jelly bean roms, to ARHD and Maximus. Same thing.
edit: actually, 0,5 mm is hardly anything if you look at how big a mm is and put and reduce the distance by 50%, anyway that's not the discussion http://www.meb.uni-bonn.de/Cancernet/Media/CDR0000578121.jpg
Hover taps/clicks happen, I'm sure I haven't touched the screen a couple of times but it responded to what I wanted to do. Anyways, try this app called touchscreen test to confirm your issue.

Touch too sensitive! issue?

I've tried to change the touch feedback setting to long/medium/short but nothing changed.
I attach a video that show what is the problem with the screen/digitizer - when tapping and keep touching (holding) the screen look at the X axis - its not constant as it should be.
The finger hold stable and not moving, but at the screen the dot moving.
I've checked 3 other G4 devices, all of them don't have this issue.
There is no screen protector (neither the one that comes with the device)
Most of the problem is at the top left of the screen, the bottom right is pretty stable.
Its very annoying while use brush/paint, zoom pictures, playing horizontal mode the left side (top of the screen) dosn't work because of this on some games.
Anyone else had this issue?
What is that problem and how do I fix it?
Is it a software / hardware problem?
There is something to make it better? anyone notice this issue?
My g3 was real bad like this it was software changed from kernal to kernal. not really rom to rom. And g4 is horribly over sensative
I have the same problem, for me it's probably hardware and software, because it was better before V20D, but I still had the problem, now it's worst. LG tried to hide this ****ty screen with software. But I repeat it's first an hardware problem... All my left screen is bad and not stable, more than yours.
Try the app "Ghost Touch Tester" and in developer mode activate "Show Touches"
This is very disappointing, reminds me the first android devices at 2010 with the bad touch screen.
Its not that worst, but you expect a smoother and better quality for device on this level.
I guess its a hardware issue, 2 other devices that I've checked dosn't have this issue (of too sensitive touch) even with tempered glass screen protectors.
The left and the top sides are most sensitive then right buttom.
Maybe kernel would fix it, anyway same story with ver. 5 and with the new 6.
Any ideas if there is something to do?
Have a 2 years warranty but I believe they "won't find any problem".

My G4 is very difficult to scroll with. It constantly opens links, instead of scrolling. Tried changing the Acessibility settings for response time to slow, and also the pointer speed, but it didn't work. Very frustrating. I almost wonder if someone paid LG to make sure more links get opened. Seems kind of convenient that the end result is you click on almost every single link.

Is there a specific app you notice this on or just everything in general?
Obvious one, but do you have a screen protector on?
It’s in all apps and the fingerprint reader scroll is also not as sensitive. I have a thin film protector on the front but I have the same on the Pixel 2 XL and can barely touch it and it responds. LG vs Samsung?

Could be a quality control issue. Just because it's the same brand doesn't mean it will behave exactly the same. Could be thicker in that portion and cause touch issues
Sent from my Pixel 3 XL using Tapatalk
Maybe the material makeup changes in different areas if quality control is really bad I guess. But I don't think the material is interfering with the touch sensitivity I think you would have to visually be able to see it's thicker in certain areas for to make a difference. I've got another one on the way and hopefully it changes things.
Top left of screen not sensitive anymore?
Something similar happened to my Google Pixel 3XL too. Top left corner not as sensitive as compared to when I first got it, not sure why?
Initially, I thought it's due to my new screen case, but after removing and putting it back, it did no difference.
Hello everyone.. i just bought pixel3Xl and i realised that
I miss Touch Screen Sensitivity....
Not every time but it happends and is so noisy..
I have a Good screen protector thow!!!
Any news if its a software bug or the screen protector?
Are you choose option hide notch on Developer option ?
Nop!
I'm having issues with touch. Last night when I was browsing as usual, my device started abnormal behavior and got stucked for unknown reason. After rebooting manually I found that touch response is so slow and have touch with force. Any kind of help on this is highly appreciated.
