Not sure if Wikipedia is the best place for that, but anyways, thanks for writing that! I'm sure very many people will find it helpful.

Moving to ????
Sorry for the Mislead in the title Yeah I guessed so. We are going to move it to somewhere else but we do now know yet where

Actually, a wiki is the absolute best format possible, compared to disparate posts across random forum sites. If only every phone/tablet/etc had a single dedicated place for information, we'd all be much better served.

A wiki is a great format (and I admit, I probably should document a LOT more on the XDA wiki) - but wikipedia isn't quite the correct location.

lol - Wikipedia is not the right place for this.
It will be deleted soon, I would copy your content before it's lost.
Wikipedia isn't for information like this, it's an encyclopedia not a tech support knowledge base.

Nice info and all, but the article is at risk for deletion. I suggest creating a wiki for this topic on its own wiki so you don't have to deal with the policies of wikipedia

Why not just add this information to the existing xda-dev wiki?

I wrote the original design for the Samsung Exhibit 2 on my site and its used on the XDA wiki. I planned on starting a guide on my site for the Kindle Fire but I couldn't get to actually writing it because I get requests for other devices. I strongly believe in giving back to communities, especially XDA. Since I don't want to use this tablet for heavy development (the large keyboard is perfect for writing guides). I don't plan on making any ROMs for the Fire. I would be more than happy to write wiki pages for my site or the XDA wiki. My site is Creative Commons license so feel free to use any existing content from my site, but I'd appreciate it if I got credit for anything used.

It is for serious people who seriously want to get the most out of their mobile devices. This is not a place to "express" yourself. If you want to be a functioning member of this community, learn everything you can about your device and try to add something useful to the conversation.
People who come to this site looking for help do not want to spend hours trolling through topics like this one, with misleading titles, only to find that it adds absolutely no useful information whatsoever.

Look "bro", if you would be a little less sensitive and pay attention to what's being said, I'm sure you'll see that I'm simply giving you an idea of what is expected around here. And considering the fact that at least two of your four posts are in violation of XDA rules, you could stand to be enlightened a little.
Most people that contribute to these forums are much older than the 10-13 age range you claim to belong to, so it would be beneficial to everyone (including yourself) if you would conduct yourself accordingly.
Or, you could continue to...violate XDA rules, post topics that are barely readable, ignore the advice of those who have been around longer than you or otherwise go against grain, and then be in a world of hurt when it is YOU that needs help one day (and believe me, you will).
The choice is yours, of course.

Suggestion to add to the XDA site.

I think this forum is the greatest for modding our phones. Many thanks to all the developers and the XDA staff!!!
I am still a noob even after 2 years of reading and installing some of the customizations on this forum. Some of the threads I read through need a lot of clarification. Most of them just assume everyone has knowledge of what to do and write just a minimalistic install forcing anyone without such knowledge to ask questions like, How, therefore getting snide remarks added to the posts unnecessarily.
My suggestion to you, XDA, would be to add and sticky a glossary and description of the processes that are needed and have to be performed thus eliminating the recursive and negative posts others likely post about noobs. All they have to do is point such a person to the correct link, the glossary.
I have searched through this site looking for such and all I could find was a single thread asking the same.I apologize if this is in the wrong forum.
Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=265

I agree, I've been an iphone user for years and just recently changed to android so I'm a big noob, but kind of afraid to ask a question seeing if it s common knowledge you're just being held out as a moron.
Some kind of section for "how to" in general would be nice.

I've been meaning to have the thread converted to a "Ask any question thread", so if a mod (Hey CTM!) can do me a favor and give me second post of that thread, I'll be grateful
The OP is a friend, and he has agreed to let me have the second post.
If it picks up, I'll either ask for the OP, or have a new sticky (don't wanna clutter the area atm)

That link doesn't provide anything. It's cluttered.
My suggestion is a single post so a user doesn't have to go all over the net (Google) to find something he isn't sure the editor/poster has efficient knowledge of. Such as, if I said to you I know how to tear your phone down and put it back together, would you trust me?
Just an example;
Android
is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers
Flashing
is also referred to as reprogramming.
This is a link of just the sort I was looking for and asking to be a stickied thred here http://www.talkandroid.com/guides/beginner/android-rom-and-rooting-dictionary-for-beginners/

Has anyone been using the Wiki?

Anyone? It is such a great source of knowledge and i believe it has been under utilized for its greatness. I just added Pantech to the list of manufacturers and linked one of the device wiki page I created. If anyone has to add to the Pantech wiki page feel free. Lately, I've been using it to see what devices has custom roms and I have been adding to the device page.
Thanks for your contributions - I think the wiki is a great resource and I wish more people would create pages like yourself.
Actually thank you for creating the wiki. people need to know that we have a wiki and that it is there for people to make changes to it. I would say to post something on the portal that we have a wiki and no one is making any changes to it. Not that many people are subscribed to the youtube channel. Only 96,000 people are subscribed compared to the almost 5 million registered users on XDA.

I wouldn't call the portal Abandoned - also XDATV has a lot of reach.
Let's me rephrase the question - what do you think would a) get more people to contribute to the wiki, and b) get more people to visit the wiki?
We are working on a few things but I'm curious what everyone thinks.

As has been mentioned, I think that making a story about it on the portal would definitely get more people to visit the wiki. We can't be sure whether it would make them want to contribute to the wiki though.
I only think the portal would be the best place to advertise it is because all the mods/themes/games etc. which get featured gain great exposure and quick popularity.
Proof of that is all around us. Many a time, a thread has been featured on XDA because it's a "hidden gem" and as soon as it reaches the portal, the thread quickly becomes a forum favourite, by gaining more Thanks, downloads, contributors and, most importantly, exposure to the XDA masses.
I would say to get Adam Outler or Jordan in the next video they make for XDA TV to announce that we have a wiki and please contribute to it. Recently the Pantech Burst has been getting a lot of developer support and i created the device wiki in the first as a go to for very useful information instead of going to multiple websites that has been spread out and people have been going to it. I did juice it up with some very useful information such as a bug list of the recent CM10 rom that is so very close to being a fully complete rom, root methods, the specs, even how much the device is going to cost you. I had help with another person but overall its a complete wiki.

Thanks everyone for your input.

And this is precisely evidence that the Portal isn't "abandoned." In fact, we are actually receiving record numbers visitors per month. Regarding advertising the wiki on the Portal, that would be a great idea. I'll look into this.

This is still by far better than nothing. And you CAN post links to your ROM here right. Devdb would be great but you should be happy for even getting a repo like this. I agree, it still not top notch but at least there is a tiny bit organization.

At least now you can type in the find device box and actually find everything related to the shield tv. Not exactly a separate forum though. I'm thinking it will get sorted out soon.
I'm in favor of this... the shield tv is pretty much the most powerful android box on the market. Just because it uses an external monitor doesn't mean its not worthy of a separate forum...
The shield handheld and tablet both have their own forums,,,,

Actually very unusual for XDA to not set up a "proper" forum for this. Before several phone (S6 for example) were even out they had the forums made properly. It's like they do not like Nvidia for some reason.
..
JJ-KwiK said:
I definitely agree. They post various explanations as to why a proper forum hasn't been made. However, when we try to open a dialog about the issue, they flat out ignore us (see HERE). They obviously don't want to open a complete forum for the device. It's too bad, because a ton of members would benefit from a proper forum with proper sub-forums in the proper section.
Edit:
They've posted a Nvidia Shield TV unboxing/review in the portal. I've added my comment there as well. Hopefully something will come of it (see HERE).

Their current most important argument against us is "In the threads, within this section, there have been a total of 215+/- posts. Not all that many.", as you have stated this is partially because our posts are scattered of different subsections. Perhaps we can try to keep them within this section? I suppose the amount of posts will increase as the device gains users anyway. Especially when the device becomes available on my side of the pond (imported mine). So I personally still have the hope a forum will be created in the future, we just have to keep on posting about this awesome device and matters will solve themselves.
TLDR: Keep posting in this forum about the NVIDIA Shield Android TV for WIN!
i can't even subscribe to this forum b/c it's not the same as other device forums. very frustrating.
nvm figured it out. but would still be nice to have an actual forum space with sub forums like other devices.
..
Just posted my request http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62196046#post62196046
.
Yet samsung s series from att and Verizon get their subforum for 2 years without any development and no root. Ghost town
Note 4 ?

How do I mitigate fragmented forum categories?

If I post about my problem in a device forum then I'll only get the audience for that device. Some devices only have a few hundred users. This makes xda kinda useless.
But xda is obviously far from useless.
What am i missing? Tags?
Is it that xdadevs tend to stick to very popular devices only?
IMHO, many devices are similar when running the same version of Android. Is it worth having separate forums?
Welcome to XDA @DontReuseUsernames!
It really depends on the information you are looking for. Questions can be very device specific, ie "Why doesn't my camera work?" to being generally applicable to Android "How do I do X with Google Camera App", and for each of these there are different forums to post in.
If all else fails, you can always post to the "General" forum, which is anything else: https://forum.xda-developers.com/f/general.256/
Thanks.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/c/xda-community-apps.3092/ is a useful new category I wasn't aware of.
Perhaps the problem could be improved by making it so that when you subscribe to one forum, you are automatically offered some related tags to subscribe to as well.

Hi, there is a thread at the very top of the about: xda-developers.com section that explains how xda works. If you have ANY questions that are Android related, you can post in Questions and Answers or Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting.
But again, everything is here: XDA New User Guide
Oh and, I also say hello to newcomers (originally iPhone newcomers) in this Post: Hello
Thank you. I'm always grateful. But I also need to tell it how it is and be honest about those beginners links.
Wow! What a mess. Broken image links. A link to a flash file. A 9 year old thread. Links to another thread that 'has been cleaned' and has only one reply ( https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/new-members-guide-tour-get-the-most-out-of-xda.1282679/ ) Again, more broken links there.
. Not a single mention of
XDA Community Apps
Download Android apps that come from XDA developers and members
forum.xda-developers.com
at either of the links that I've found so far.
Nothing addressing the issue of device fragmentation. Fragmented forums effect even the popular devices. It's just less obvious.
What needs doing is for us to re-index threads by keyword and make a new site linking through to helpful threads. I may well do this myself, depending on how much time I get off over the next holiday and how much I need the info myself. If I get some time to do it I'll update with a link here.
