Hi all,
found a little bug in the SMS App. Sorry if some else posted this before or if this isn´t realy interesting for someone
Go into your SMS App, write a new SMS or an answer to any SMS.
Now, the point of this bug is the following special character:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Just Type this special char five times or ten times into your SMS, nothing will happen.
Now delete all chars or write a new SMS. As first, write as many letters as possible, to get the Char count under your SMS (should be at 130 chars).
Now reenter one of this special chars and you will need up to send two SMS, a hole single SMS for that "point".
So, this is not a big spectacular bug, but it seems to be one
Maybe this works with other special chars, too.
Have a nice day.
Not a bug at all.
Some special chars, including those with specific punctuation or specific to certain languages, require different alphabets, thus reducing the amount of space available per sms (70 chars if you use that special symbol).
Quoting from wikipedia
Transmission of short messages between the SMSC and the handset is done whenever using the Mobile Application Part (MAP) of the SS7 protocol. Messages are sent with the MAP MO- and MT-ForwardSM operations, whose payload length is limited by the constraints of the signaling protocol to precisely 140 octets (140 octets = 140 * 8 bits = 1120 bits). Short messages can be encoded using a variety of alphabets: the default GSM 7-bit alphabet, the 8-bit data alphabet, and the 16-bit UCS-2 alphabet. Depending on which alphabet the subscriber has configured in the handset, this leads to the maximum individual short message sizes of 160 7-bit characters, 140 8-bit characters, or 70 16-bit characters. GSM 7-bit alphabet support is mandatory for GSM handsets and network elements, but characters in languages such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Japanese or Cyrillic alphabet languages (e.g. Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, etc.) must be encoded using the 16-bit UCS-2 character encoding (see Unicode). Routing data and other metadata is additional to the payload size.

If this is an 16 bit char and you fill up a SMS with 130 7bit chars, you should still have place for 210 bit, what means, you should be able to enter 13 of this points, until you need a second SMS, but if you do that, WP needs hole 1120 bits for this single point! Now count up some more standard chars and than a few of this points again and, tada, WP will count that point as an 7bit char and not any more as 16bit char (or better, as single 1120bit char)....like, if you begin that SMS with that speacial char....
Isn´t this realy a bug? Can you realy trust this counter?

Dude,
it's really hard to follow you.
But as soon as you type a 7bit char, the whole sms will be written using that 7bit alphabet. it cannot mixes one with another, it's the way it is coded in the "header"

The misses has just received here DHD and found that the standard HTC People manager only shows the address in a small scrollable field and it's really awkward to see the full address at a glance.
Does anyone have any ideas how to make the address easily visible?
Or an alternative contact manager app?
I'll post screen shots later if it'll help.
I had a quick surf earlier and couldn't find any info that was helpful...
So we can view a complete contract address, does anyone know how to get the standard Contact viewer to replace HTC's?
HTC Contact Address is truncated on a single line e.g.

Android Contact Address is shown over several lines e.g.
Excuse the pic's, they're for illustration purposes only.
I had the same problem with my last phone - a Nokia E71. You had to hit 'edit' to view the address in a seperate window. A pain in the posterior! And, like you, I've noticed that the HTC People app does the same thing. So you can either a) use the 'edit' mode or b) tap the address, it comes up on Google maps, tap the flag and then the full address pops up. Doh ....
Thing is, with the more basic Nokias, and I've just checked with the wife's 2730 Classic, you can use the 'View' option to look at the complete address. If the address was so long it wouldn't fit on one screen then you just scroll down. Simples! Now, how can Android do the same?
Dave
Same problem with birthday... Can't see the year until you edit it, annoying
OK. Been looking into this as I was getting a bit hacked off with it. Something so basic .... Anyhow, downloaded 'AddressBook for Android 2' and at first it looked quite good but soon noticed it had no 'comapny' field ... But you could view the complete address in a single window.
Then tried Youlu. Now this seems to meet all my needs (at present anyway!). It gives all the same info as the 'people' app but when you choose the address you get ..... the full postal address!!!! Only then, if you tap the address you get Google maps showing where it is.

Dave
Thanks for the suggestions, although I don't see many favourable reviews for Youlu - how have you found it?
I sent this issue to HTC a few weeks back. Maybe if more of us do the same they may consider addressing it (if you'll pardon the pun) in a future update.
I'm getting a little fed-up with having to consider using 3rd party apps to replace basic functionality. I'm using Handcent because Sense SMS is broken, the Sense calendar is full of holes and doesn't include tasks, so I'm looking for a replacement... And contacts (which is otherwise ok) doesn't show complete addresses!
2 notices for all day.
Has added on the screen a trade mark of the operator.
There is a version where it small above, a number with line of the operator, Other version where the trade mark is more, but to be on a substrate of hours, and the line of the operator is cleaned. As I have ' Beeline GSM ', by default a trade mark beeline gsm.
But for your convenience, has made it so, that you can easily change it for the ! It Refers to operator_logo.png, and lays in a folder windows. The size: if fashions with a small trade mark, 24 on 24 pixels, if with greater, 58 on 58 pixels.
Well and if you at all do not wish to see a trade mark it can be made transparent after that you and do not recollect the Substrate it at hours it is possible so to clean.
Both versions in two versions, with a background and without on all tabs!
Does not work with CHT

When I compose a sms with this new rom, it displays (1/3) (2/3) (3/3) and so on depending on the message length. Any way to disable this feature ? Thanks !
ok let me explain myself a little better.
When I send a long sms with this new rom, it divide the message in small parts and the receiver receive theses multiples part with number

Isn't that the way it's supposed to be? SMS is limited to 160 characters, and on CDMA networks, they're broken up after every 160 characters and numbered accordingly (e.g 1/3, 2/3, 3/3..)
I don't use the stock app because it doesn't support group mms for some reason. I don't think there is an option to change what you want though. I just use 8sms, does all I need and is customizable.

Maybe I'm wrong but I think with previous rom when I was sending a long sms, the receiver would receive one big message like :
"abcdefghi"
Now with this rom he receives auto splitted messages with numbers :
1/3
abc
1/3
2/3
def
2/3
3/3
ghi
3/3

Correct, but as I said, I don't see an option to turn it off. That, along with group mms, is why I use a different app.

I have the same problem but i have JB, not KK.
I don't understand why this happens, because before, another LG Smarthphone sendig several messages into one.
Samsung Galaxy S20
Messages App
Microsoft Swiftkey keyboard
I just got this Galaxy S20. On my previous phone (Galaxy S9), when I hit the little "microphone" button on my SwiftKey keyboard to do voice to text when using the Messages App for texting, I would simply start talking and the words I was creating by voice would populate the text field in Messages. I could easily see the words as I spoke. After I was done taking, I'd just hit the send button and I was good to go.
With this S20, when I hit the little microphone button, the window pictured below (left image) pops up. It is super annoying for a few reasons. One, that stupid grey box that says "Your audio Will be sent....." blocks the first several words that I am speaking, so I can't see that the text to words is translating correctly. Second, if I stop talking for around a second, the voice to text assumes I'm done speaking and closes, preventing me from adding more words if I hesitate to complete a thought. Third and worst of all, after I'm done talking the words I just spoke don't transfer to the text field in Messages. If I tap the empty text field in messages, SOMETIMES the words I just spoke suddenly appear in the text field- maybe 50% of the time. Supper annoying as half the time I have to repeat the whole voice-to-text process or revert to typing.
On my S9, when I hit the microphone button, I got a pop-up as shown in the second picture (bottom right), and my words simply transferred directly to the text field in Messages, where I could clearly see them and simply hit "send" when done speaking.
When I use Facebook Messenger and do voice-to-text, I still get the pop up box with the annoying grey "Your audio will be sent......" blocking my words, but when I'm done speaking, at least my words transfer into the empty text box automatically and edit/send as required.
Anyway, tried getting this answered on another Android forum to no avail. I hear the posters on here are much smarter : )

Dear XDAnauts,
I don't recall always having this problem but nowadays the LOS app for messaging and SMS/MMS shows only four lines while typing:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
And no matter how many lines you have typed, the window does not get bigger than 4 lines. Well, how shall I put it without using swear words?
Seriously, that is quite the flaw! You keep seeing all the previous messages in their full beauty but only 4 lines of your own text. Changing font size does not help...
Does anyone know how to change that? Or what other app to use?
I recently had to send an SMS, which I almost never do any longer. Hardly anyone does in Europe I believe, since these are still often charged. But I immediately saw the same problem. In any other messaging app the text field grows up to a certain number of lines.
Anyway, it's weird that the stock SMS has not caught up. Then again, I guess this is just AOSP, right? I'm not aware how much of AOSP's apps LineageOS actually provides better implementations of. Surely it's not this one. I just see the AOSP SMS app similar as the standard browser: they are just to have something until you install something better.
I guess where SMS text messaging is more common, like in the US, people who use LineageOS use something different. Perhaps just Google's version that can handle text messages. Sorry I lost track of which one that currently is. Also, I know that Signal can handle SMS. And what about Simple SMS Messenger on F-droid?
As an aside, of course for non LineageOS users, the majority just uses a vendor version of the (AOSP) app. It's actually a shame that SMS is not so much used in many areas of the world. It's nice when this is not controlled by a single app as a fully decentralised system. Perhaps if providers didn't charge for them, SMS would have progressed further and would have included encryption, more data types, and so on. There would be many good (and open source) SMS clients for many different outlets, giving people choice. Instead, only the service people are on is what drives competition, not the app development directly unfortunately.

Yay! Perhaps not as pretty, but it certainly works:
Thank you! I wonder how I missed looking up F-Droid Nice, it seems to be able to import/export, too!

Well, EUrope mostly seems to be a country of moronic WhatsApes. Getting asked twice a month by someone to install it.
Most people have a contract that includes free SMS... free for domestic. However, sending them abroad usually can cost whopping 0.49€...
