I seem to be having some problem with my HSDPA connection on my desire. I'm wih Three UK and I can't tell is it is my network on the phone.
What happened is for some reason it just wont work anywhere I go. For the first few weeks its worked fine and then towards the end of last month they sent me texts saying they would cut my internet off if I carry on using it but I can't see that having anything to do with it as it is a new month.
The phone is rooted and I've flash the new DeFrOsT Rom (2.0a) and it started working again but then when I logged into the Facebook app it stopped working and went to R (also the wholetime I'm connected to a wifi and when I disconnect from wifi I still get the no connection).
I tried uninstalling Facebook and logging out and no luck
I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this or it is happening to them or you know a fix.
I also attached some screenshots of the message I get, I can't actually read the full message as it cuts it off and then when you select it, it just takes you to the homepage.
the R is for roaming
how is the signal strength where you're located?
go into settings -> wireless and networks ->
tell me what roaming settings you have enabled
untick the box to allow data roaming
data roaming will take place when the signal strength is very low and you are therefore using other carrier's networks (this might also incur high data costs!)
Data roaming is disabled and the signal in my area is usually quite good. Also when I go into a city around here or anywhere nothing changes it still sticks on R.
Plus before I started to flash it with roms and rooted it, it would nearly always have HSDPA connection.
so although data roaming is disabled your phone is roaming...
can i ask why it is that 3 told you that they will disable your internet? this seems to be the main problem...
have you tried flashing a different radio?
this will definitely have some change
They sent a text I was reaching/reached my data allowance for the month (so called unlimited =/)
And yeah I've just flashed the new radio that is needed for defrost 2.0a however it did happen before I flashed it.
For some reason it has got proper signal and HSDPA for the time being and as far as I know I did nothing to make it any better.
Got a feeling it will go again but I'll keep you updated.
I'll have to ring three up tomorrow if I can't get it sorted as I'm going on holiday and I'll be screwed with out it,
sounds to me like you have a data cap where if you exceed a certain limit your internet is stopped.
the fact that you are in roaming makes me think that it is a trick so that 3 can charge you large amounts so be careful.
glad the radio update worked for you
let us know if the problem persists
although there's not much we can do unless we know it's been sorted with your provider.
Thanks for the help.
The thing I don't get is the roaming bit as when it says I'm roaming I can make calls and text fine and there is no charge or anything on my bill it just uses normal minutes
honestly it sounds to me like a problem with your provider
does it still say roaming with the new radio?
if it does then phone your provider because they can charge you a large amount for roaming
Three only run a 3G network in the UK. To provide coverage and data connectivity (mainly EDGE) in the areas between their masts they partner with Orange. Your Desire will roam onto the Orange (and possibly now T-Mobile since they merged on Monday) network when it has a weak or no 3G signal. To allow data in these circumstances you must have data when roaming enabled.
There is no additional charge for 3 customers to use data roaming while in the UK. It is part of your monthly bundle. However, please remember to turn data roaming back off when you travel abroad or it'll cost you a fortune!

+1 for the above, roaming is all well and good but of you leave it on when your on holiday youll definately remember it!

Thanks I didn't realise I could use data roaming as when I clicked to enable it it said I may be charged so I didn't bother but now I will as I wont get charged
I was just about to say that the original problem had gone but it's decided to happen again just as I tried to log into ebay and download something from the market. However I think it has started to use data roaming as there is now an R in the signal box but a G next to it where the H would be.
Think I'll be ringing them up today
It seems like all my incoming calls are going straight to answerphone now, my phone never rings!!!
I have phoned orange and they have said switch to GSM only for the next 24 hours whilst they compile a report.
Switched to GSM, tried to call my mobile from my house phone and funny enough - answerphone again!!!
Does anyone else have this issue?
I swear orange didn't used to be like this and it seems to have got worse now Im using the desire
Try your SIM in another phone. Does it still happen?
If it doesn't it's just signal/coverage is low in that area.
If it does, try it when you're in another area? If it's still happening get Orange to check for a "Do Not Disturb" being active on your account.
Hope this helps.
theres a whole bunch of problems at the moment with Orange as they are merging with T-Mobile and there are technical steps being taken as part of that merger.
The signals Im finding are very unreliable, no problems with dropped calls (that I know of ) but my 3g is off every few days.
Orange arn't handling this very well from a customers point of view, no communications, no warnings of poor service.
Done a test and calls come through all ok when mobile data connection is off.
The phone doesn't like internet active whilst a call is coming in.
This is a possibly a mobile network error, whereby a service provider i.e. orange hasnt setup 'DTM' which handles your data connection and incoming calls by priority i.e. cutting internet off when a call comes in.
But then some have said on other phones using T-mobile or again orange (both not supporting DTM) calls have come through ok whilst actively using data connection i.e. downloading app.
I was on orange 2 months ago with a HTC touch HD and this did not happen at all.
So... It looks like it may be Eclair 2.1 which is the issue... IMO...
Perhaps Froyo will solve it...!
What radio version are you useing?

I'm using the Orange retail raped version rom, so whatever radio version comes with that.
Sorry don't know much about radio versions etc... how can I find out what one it is for you?
Done a couple more tests...
Settings - Wireless & Networks - Mobile Networks - Network Mode...
Now changed to WCDMA only, so now it's only using
Icon on phone
3G
3G+ i.e. HSPDA
Instead of this aswell:
G i.e. 2G
Dropped calls have gone down somewhat as 3G has the ability to work with both data & voice at the same time depending on the class of the device.
I suffer this as does my friend and he is on a different phone and os so its definitely a network issue.

Agreed, several people I know on Orange on various phones have been having trouble lately. And today people tell me they got an engaged tone, not even voicemail when they rang me. Definitely the network.
It seems to have got worse over the last few days. At times I need to make more than one attempt to dial out, the calls drops unexpectidely, and people who ring me sometimes get redirected to Voicemail even though my phone is on with good signal. Have phoned orange multiple times about it, and after diagnosing with them, still at a loss. Anyone else expereincing similar?

P.s. the phone is not rooted, however very recently I used ADB to install all apps to SD.
oh, the phone has also rebooted a few random times on it's own aswell over the last few days. I think it's all linked.
Have inserted the sim card into another phone. On my desire, while testing, out of 8 incoming calls, 2 went to Voicemail. On my other phone, out of 20 incoming calls, 0 went to voicemail. Seems that it's a fault with the phone and not Orange reception. Going to phone HTC.
Suggested I do a hard reset. I might aswell root my phone and install stock if that is the case.
Any suggestions before I waste a day?
All my previous devices, were on orange, the service was awful, texts coming hours and somtimes days late, calls going str8 to vm, slow data ect, when i got my desire i changed to tmob, and ive never looked back

Hi
I used to have an X10, that frequently put peoples calls direct to VM in full reception (even with a mate standing next to me calling it went to VM). Now i have the desire and still the same issues, I get random texts telling me I have missed calls when the phone never rang. So I'm not sure if its Orange or Android. I was previously on o2 and didn't have these issue
Update the radio part ?

I know that, but in my area, i only just got gprs with orange, but with t-mobile i get an excellent hsdpa signal, and there cheaper, £5 for a months unlimited internet

If you are on GPRS (i.e. no 3G coverage at your location), and you are actively using the GPRS connection (including for background data), then it will block incoming calls as if the phone were in a call already. This is a limitation of GPRS*, and it is the same on all UK networks and all phones.
This doesn't happen with 3G/HSDPA, or if you are using Wi-Fi for your data.
I don't know if this is the OP's problem, because it shouldn't cause dropped calls once established (or affect outgoing calls, I think) but it is the effect behind what some of you are describing.
*technically, it doesn't happen with certain GPRS devices (class A?), but there are very few such phones, and there are certain network measures to avoid it, but no network uses them.
so if somebody could write an app that suspends data connection if on 2g and allows data for 3g only, then problem solved?? Obviously only for people who are not really bothered by loss of data sometimes.

I'm always on GPRS party because there's no 3G/HSDPA at home nor at where I work. So I've hard-set the phone to be GSM only and I've never missed a called so far. Even had calls come in mid facebook usage....
Edit; Tried it again now,
Box standard non-branded desire, Orange Pay As You Go.
a G icon to the left of my reception bars.
I was updating the weather widget both Up and Down arrows where lit up.
Rang from my office phone to my desire..No problems at all.......
my data connection is usually switched off (saves battery), so that isn't the cause,

Odd. Maybe Orange changed something - I've never tried with them. The network feature is called DTM, but I didn't think anyone had turned it on. I frequently miss calls on O2 because of this.
The Desire also appears to frequently lie and reports the wrong symbol much of the time - so at work with only GPRS (in the middle of nowhere and we have our own cell on our site), mine often says H for HSDPA, and yet the same problem occurs. I suppose it's possible that you're actually on EDGE.
There's a thread about it here: ht tp://androidforums.com/htc-desire/68995-not-receiving-calls-when-browsing-gprs.html
used to have this problem with my x10 on orange until i flashed a new rom and updated the baseband, hasn't dropped a call since....... the wife recently upgraded her phone to desire hd and she is now having the dropping calls/forwarding to vm problem. i reckon its got to be something wrong with the radio orange are using, get it flashed and see if it helps? that is my plan with the missus phone!
I had this happen with my phone on o2 on 3g I notice my signal bar wasn't high though an drops easily. One day i got loads of delayed msgs an calls going straight to vm. I switched my setting to use 2g only an now no problems.

That's the same work around i have been using. 2G also seems better for battery life, so now I prefer it over 3G.
OP - my partner has been experience EXACTLY the same issues as you with her AMOLED Desire.
To the point where we are possibly going to root it soon, in the hope that a new ROM/radio will resolve the issues. Not sure how viable this is though...
Is anyone experiencing a long delay when dialing out? I am on stock rooted ROM. One of my buddies is having the same issue also. The delay is about 5-10 seconds. I don't have this issue when I use the same SIM card with my old iPhone.
I live in Michigan

I have this with my Note II, and so did my Note I and my Streak.
I have seen this on a few of my friends devices. Test this for me
Make a phone call and watch your data icon. It will go from 4g LTE to 4g then disappear the the call will go through.
Then call your phone and watch as the data icon goes from 4g to nothing then ring.
It seems to b a problem with a few select phones. Not sure if its a software or hardware issue. But I have reported the issue to at&t and samsung . Due to the fact that I have seen it on 4 phones

This is exactly what I have noticed!!!! I am also not sure if it's a software or hardware issue.
Seems normal to me. Voice over LTE is not (yet) enabled/available/supported. For voice, the radio has to switch from LTE to UMTS, and then establish a connection to the new network.

The issue is a total loss of data. So no talk and surf

Just a quick check - is data set to be LTE-only? You generally can't have simultaneous voice and LTE data.
You could try turning off LTE data and forcing WCDMA/GSM data. That might help.
Also, the signal has to be very strong for simultaneous voice and data. When there is low signal strength, the carrier may have elected to suppress data in favour of voice.
You could also experiment with other baseband firmware. That has made a difference on some of my other phones. The configuration of the carrier's towers plays a big role. However, in my limited experience, signal strength has been the key factor.
Good luck!
I have had two phones with the stock builds and base bands next to each other with all the same settings and one works fine the other doesn't.
The weird thing on top of it is that 50% of the time when making outgoing calls it fails. And when people call they receive the message that the line is no longer in service
Sent from my SCH-I605 using xda premium
Stab in the dark: That sounds like a loose antenna connection - if it happens to the same phone all the time (that was the cause of a similar issue on my old Moto Milestone); or a carrier issue - if it happens on the same tower. (Just because two phones are side by side doesn't mean that they are connected to the same tower.)
The code for radio info is *#0011# http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802028 (I know we're not talking about fast dormancy - well, we are talking about radio state switching for the OP - but that thread and Erica's two XDA videos on fast dormancy have lots of good info on radios and data.)
I'm all out of ideas now ...
Got a message on my phone earlier today saying "Restricted access changed. Data service blocked."
Have unlimited data plan, and no data limit set my phone, did some trouble shooting with T-Mobile, they're figuring a tower issue, but I've been all over a few cities now, and keeps doing it. They told me to set phone to GSM only (2G) and that works, but slow of course.
Tried setting the data limit to on and it's set at 100gb or some such thing I'll never reached and worked about hour before the message showed up again...
Any thoughts or ideas on how to get this working right? Because I really doubt it's a tower issue

Have access to a different phone? Try your sim in another phone,...or put someone elses sim in your phone to see if its the phone itself.
I don't since they changed the SIM card style from my last phones. Turns out tmobile sent out some texts to people last week saying that they were doing tower upgrades and to expect data issues. I never got that one and it seems like tech support clueless about too...surprise
