[Q] odin counter reset - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

ok heres my problem , im trying to reset my odin counter and ive done the odin restore back to ek02 ,i was coming from el29 , but when i power off my phone and then plug in my usb jig my counter doesnt reset so i started to search this forum for a fix but i cant find one and the ones that do say anything says to one click back to ek02 witch i have done and its still not working , i need to take my phone to sprint to get looked at and the repair guys at my sprint are hip to the rooting game so they check that stuff first , please can anybody help thanks
oh and by the way i just got my usb jig today, brand new

Search the market for -triangle away- if you still have root this will reset your count.

Use an Odin OC to get to ICS, use Triangle Away and then revert to EL29, again by Odin OC.
Hope this helps!

Are you sure you flashed the ODIN OneClick?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23478866&postcount=869
Any of GB OneClicks would have allowed your jig to work without any additional work.
At this point it is probably simpler if you just flash the bootloader:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1391624

To sfhub,
Yes i used your one click odin to get to ek02 and then used the auto root to unroot and what bootloader do i need to flash and how do i just flash a bootloader?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA

It is in the post you replied to.

to sfhub,
thanks man it worked but now how do i get back to the current bootloader without adding to the binery counter ?

I would suggest you just leave well enough alone. You won't have issues.

Use heimdall to flash one of the .bin files from stock recovery. I had this same exact problem. I flashed (heimdall'ed) everything I could get my hands on and couldn't get my usb jig to reset the counter. Finally at my wits' end I download the stock EL29 md5, untar it, and heimdall'ed every file in it using their corresponding --commands.
I did this:
sudo heimdall flash --repartition --pit ../victory_8G_100528.pit --factoryfs ./factoryfs.rfs --cache ./cache.rfs --data ./datafs.rfs --primary-boot ./boot.bin --secondary-boot ./Sbl.bin --param ./param.lfs --kernel ./zImage
sudo heimdall flash --recovery ./recovery.bin

But i bet you could get by doing just boot.bin, SBL.bin or recovery.bin. Probably recovery.bin.
EDIT: I bet I dorked it up when I heimdalled --kernel boot.img from one of the AOSP ROMs. Just glad I was able to fix it.

Hi folks.
Is there any way to get cust bin Counter reset from Odin on my SGS3?
My Device have memory issues and i want to reset Counter in order to get Samsung Service on the Device since it still is under warranty.
Is it possible to reset Counter on a Device that wont even boot? Just rebooting into the small "Samsung" text on display, restarts and reboots all the time...

[Q] Problems installing kernels

Hey guys. I'm having some issues installing kernels. I'm aware of how to do the process but aside from the CWM kernels and the stock kernel that's installed when you odin back to stock every other kernel I flash results in a boot loop.
Things like ROMS and zips install fine in CWM but as long as the file has a custom kernel I get boot loops.
Anyone have any idea how I can go about fixing this so I can install ROMs on my phone?
Can anyone help? Plz???
Probably because your well on your way to bricking your epic.. kernels are rom specific just cause theres many out there doesnt mean you can flash anyone over any rom..
I wouldnt really play with cwm just yet phones to new... alot people are bricking this device fasst ..I was one of them.
If u wanna play safe use stock rom with zedomaxepicv3 1.6 oc kernel flash that tar in odin after u go back to stock eg30.tar
give development some time ..let others go through trial and error.
Spare your device she will brick trust me.

Nothing that I'm doing should result in a hard brick with this phone. The issue isn't that I'm flashing different kernels with any random ROM. It's that ROMS don't install properly because of the issue my phone is having with kernels.
I've tried to install Zedomax's latest kernel immediately after going back to the stock eg30 tar before and I wasn't able to do that either. It resulted in me getting a boot loop as well (that had to then again be fixed by flashing the eg30 tar).
It's a weird issue that I don't see others having on the forum and honestly I think it's possible that it might be a small fix such as flashing a particular tar or possibly formatting some area of the phone, but I'm just not sure how to address the issue.
Heres what u do worked for me ok
Step by step
Go to stock with eg30.tar its a 435-450mb file
Use the odin version 1.85 reccomended
Enable usb debug on epic
Get into download mode
Only select pda and choose the zedomaxepic v3 1.6oc kernel it is a tar file should be in android dev section or google it.
Only selct auto reboot should already be checked in odin , do nothing else and do not use any pit file.
Then you should get a successful flash then phone boots up as galaxy s 2, gt 19100 with a yellow triangle that means it flashed
Thats exactly how i did it.

Flash the tar kernel with odin.. dont use the cwm zip method i bet that does it
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA Premium App
Yes samsung is known for that once ur on a kernel made for the device bit its really from a diff phone cause zedomax is a gti9100 kernel i a way u cant flash rom zips over a custom kernel
You can only use rom zips over stock kernel
The only way to flash zips is be on stock rom stock kernel first.
The best method is odin not cwm

If I do this process in the order you have it here then when I try to install Zedomax's Kernel it hangs at zimage in ODIN and I have to disconnect the USB. The kernel never flashes and it stays on the official Samsung kernel.
This stuff is frustrating
Weird weird... It shouldnt hang anywhere as long as u see yellow com port in odin and you have correct tar put into pda only dont unzip anuthing just put download into winrar choose pda and select the downloaded tar.. When done itl say pass in green

Make sure its the complete prerooted zedomaxepic v3 1.6 kernel no other version and it must be a .tar file not zip . In pda only let it sit sometimes it will fail keep trying but make sure ur on stock rom first..
That kernel willl give u over clocking ..root and cwm recovery all in one

try another usb port, and/or another cable...
and you can just flash the stock repack with CWM to avoid flashing zedo first

I know what to expect in ODIN during a correct flash, I've used it multiple times, but for whatever reason, that particular tar file always end in a hang at zimage.

I have the right file. And I already know how to obtain root and CWM with the few kernels my phone can flash (Which now that I think about it are mostly stock kernels with slight modifications). Overclocking isn't that important to me but overall my main problem is that when I'm in CWM I can't fully install ROMS. They install but do not flash over correctly/completely and cause boot loops. Other zips flash fine.

I've tried multiple USB cables, all result in the same thing. I've tried to flash the stock pack with CWM that you're talking about before and that works fine. i was able to root afterwards and everything but once I tried to install a ROM when I'm on that kernel. I get the same thing, boot loops.
are you sure its bootloops and not just taking a long time? because rebuilding the dalvik-cache can take a while and loop the bootanimation..

I can't imagine rebuliding the dalvik-cache should take in excess of 10 minutes or more (if it can, correct me). It just hangs at the Samsung Boot Animation that has the yellow triangle with the exclamation mark.
(I've left the phone on for about 15-20 mins before at this screen) I can only then access download mode, nothing else. No recovery and no booting.
Maybe just stay stock for now till development furthers..

I'm not experiencing the boot issues but, I found there is a lot of information out there regarding kernels and rom's. This is good stuff here. By doing this method, will it root the phone? After doing this, I would like to get rid of the yellow triangle. Mostly just annoys me. Is there an easy way to do that?
I see a method chris41g provided for doing it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1297999
Is it possible to just use that stock tar and then use zedomaxepic v3 1.6oc kernel? Or is it the kernel that causes the triangle?
Sorry for so many questions. I'd like to do this once and do it right the first time. I came from the Bonsai ROM on the Epic 4g. It has been a while since I have had to do this.
Thanks for your time.

I've had to go back to stock multiple times. Every time I've tried to flash a ROM it's run into a boot loop and the only way that I can access the phone again is to ODIN back to stock, install one of the few kernels I can that has CWM and restore a backup. The kernel you mentioned in your post is one of the few my phone will take but others like the Lost Kernel and Zedomax's OC ones will send the phone into a boot loop.

Please help...Odin Fails on Recovery.bin

My name is Chris and I am a noob
I bought a used Galazy S2 Epic 4G Touch. As it turned out the phone was rooted and was running the Starburst rom. All day today I have spent reading about and trying to put this phone back to the stock firmware from sprint. I have tried the one-click odin installers and tried using odin and loading the PDA manually. Each and eveytime it fails on the recovery.bin. Can someone please help this noob out?
The phone will no longer boot up into the OS and states there was an issue with the firmware. However, I can boot into the download mode and the phone is recognized by odin. I have tried using a different USB cord, different USB ports, different computer running Windows XP....all with no luck. I would greatly appreciate any and all help.
Whenever you interrupt an ODIN flash it will give you that message until you get a clean flash of something. Sometimes you need a USB jig to get back into ODIN D/L mode, but it seems you are saying you already can get there.
Your flash memory is probably defective for the recovery.bin partition. It actually isn't used. Try flashing individually the modem, kernel, and ROM. If you look at the 2nd post of the ODIN One-Click posts, the individual tar files are provided.

If you want you can do a ##786# reset. This will clear your android user data and clear NVRAM. Your phone will reprovision itself at next boot. If the previous owner messed with the NVRAM though it might not always reset properly though.
If your phone is otherwise working now (ie provisioned) then I wouldn't bother clearing NVRAM and instead would just do a wipe data/factory reset from Recovery or do it from Privacy->Reset.
Flash a stock rom with efs clear checked in odin. This will reset the phone and OTA activate. Plus it will reset anything the previous user may have done with the nvram.

Reset counter

I notice in the skyrocket build thread they have a reset flash counter tool.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1575712
Is any one looking into this? I would love to reset it if i needed
Once we have a sbl1 to flash from our ICS odin tar, this will be easy.
Or i could dump mine since my reset counter is not tainted and allow some one who has a tainted counter to try.
mine is a t989d, some one with a t989 will have to dump theirs for the tmo guys. (it may not make a difference, besides device id in download mode) but who knows.
Someone with a tmobile t989
run this command in adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=/sdcard/sbl1.mbn
attach me the output.
Anyways, i trigegred my flash counter with odin and flashed my sbl1 dump back andi t works liek a charm.
grab it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578184 if any one wants it. Just remember this is from my T989D so im unsure if it will effect a t989 adversely.

you're lucky you didn't brick that was a pretty risky thing. the sbl1 is what makes your device turn on. if you **** that up in any way. your done. its game over. this isn't a rom flash, this is a boot loader.
secondly, your device is now identified as a SGH-I727 according to the boot loader, this may give you grief later on when doing legitimate updates and what not.
Working or not, I'd flash the SBL back to what is meant to be on your device.
I'm still waiting for soem one to hit me up with a dump of the T989 sbl1

If I'm not mistaken, the counter only trips when you flash through odin. Any flashing through CWM doesn't affect the counter.

[Flashable] CWM Flash-Counter Reset SGH-T989D (Telus) and SGH-T989 (Tmo)

What is a the Odin/Flash counter?
Many users call this by three different names, Odin counter, Flash counter, or the Download Counter ( Most Common). This counter appears when the device is in download mode. When you use Odin, or anything else to flash a non Samsung Kernel to the device, this counter will change from "NO" to a number, depending on how many times you flash a kernel using this method will depend on what your counter says.
Why should I care about this?
Normally you wouldn't have to care, however If you have to return your device to Samsung or the carrier. Their technicians are now trained to check this download counter and if it says ANYTHING but "NO" your warranty will be voided, they will either return the device unfixed to you or send you an invoice for the repairs.
My device is fine, is there any advantage to clearing the download counter?
If you have a custom recovery flashed, and are confident you will not be using download mode to flash a non Samsung kernel, I say YES. In the event your device becomes damaged and you are unable to flash it. You will have the confidence of sending it back knowing that the Counter reports "NO" so there is less of a chance that the device will be rejected for repair under warranty.
Is this dangerous?
In a perfect world things never go wrong, but our world is not perfect clearly. You are flashing a boot-loader, specifically the SBL1 (secondary boot-loader #1). You should not ever have an issue flashing this. But In the event your battery dies while flashing this or the zip file becomes corrupt. YOU WILL BRICK. This is not designed to let you reset your counter 100 times, each time you reset the counter, you play with fire. Too many times, and you get burnt. CHECK THE MD5sum! Don't be a fool.
How do i check my counter?
Power your device off, hold Vol Down and turn the device on, keep holding the Vol button until you see download mode appear. Press Vol Up to bypass the warning and your "Custom binary" counter will be the second line, it should say "NO" if you are clean and warranty intact, it will contain a number if not.
Ahhhhhhhh... I get it, so what's this flashable zip do again?
It resets your counter from a numbered value to "NO"

I'll take the dump any way and make you a flashable zip, you can flash it back and see if it still achieves a reset.
Did a compare of my untainted sbl1 to a tainted one. the counter is at the very tail end of the sbl. i may even be able to just reset yours in your sbl dump IF no one here has a tmobile T989 with an untainted counter.
X,
Just a quick question. The .zip in the OP can either be flashed through Clock Work Mod Recovery or Odin, Correct?
Thanks
Just CWM, its not an odin tar.
Can't someone reset it with a jig and then dump it clean?

resetting with a jig has been disabled by samsung since the sgs international GB updates.
How to dump? I do have an untouched dl mode.

I have the sbl1 file posted in this post on the other thread for the Tmobile T989:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24360211&postcount=6
Made a flashable zip and posted it in the first post. now all we need is a tmo user to flash and make sure it resets their counter as my tests have concluded for my telus device.

I can confirm that your zip is working fine. My counter went from 2 to NO. Thank you very much for this.
You're welcome. i had thought about this a while back and just never got around to testing it until a user posted a thread about a user making them for the skyrocket kids.
You could also brick your device flashing junk to the sbl1 block, but that would be unethical for warranty purposes wouldn't it
Thanks for this? Quick question is the only benefit to this for insurance purposes or would this benefit the device by cleaning partitions or the counter and such? Sorry if noobish question lol

The counter is only for warranty purposes. so unless you have to send it back, clearing the counter serves no purpose unless you have OCD like me.
Noob question. How do I check my counter

you left out that he needs to be connected to the computer. easiest way is to hold the vol buttons and connect the micro usb cable to your phone..should be connected to your computer

Once you've followed the above instructions to get into download mode, you'll see 2 lines that say whether you have a custom binary installed and your current binary. If it says "NO" to custom binary and "Samsung" to current binary installed, your counter is 0. Otherwise it will show the number your counter is at.

is there anyway to reset the counter??

ok so my kids mother wanted her gs3 rooted so i did she tried a few roms and the whole root thing aint for her.. so today i unrooted it but i forgot to use that app triangle away.. so basicly im screwed rite?? is there anyway to make it to 0 again?? she is not bringing it to sprint but just in case she ever does i dont want them to say she screwed on her warrenty cause the counter is at 3 and not 0..
Triangle Away doesn't work yet. Still waiting on an update.
I think there's a stock software you can flash that resets it. I'll look for it quick and get back to you.
Edit:
Here ya go:

yea but dont u have to flash that in recovery?? so ill have to root it again and flash a custom recovery again rite?? i already unrooted with odin its stock everything now recovery and all.. just the counter is not at 0.. do all the stores look into the counter being not at 0??
You'll have to flash root/recovery again in Odin, but as of right now, I think this is the only way to reset flash counter.
Takes 6 seconds in Odin and you're back with CWM and root, so it's not too much trouble.

Triangle away works just fine as long as your not on jellybean which triggers the counter on every boot. So wheather you use triangle away or the rom w/ reset you will need root or a custom recovery.
Just flash any custom recovery in odin http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900492 which takes two seconds.
Reboot straight to recovery and flash zip in above post. You'll be totally straight afterwards. Dont even need to reroot. 2 step process
u guys think that they will look at her counter in case she ever goes to sprint?? everything else is stock just the counter says 3

Ive done an htc or two in my day and believe me i feel ur pain. Everytime felt like the first time with an htc. I will say i do miss having a phone with fastboot tho. HTC def has the right idea leaving fastboot on their phones.
EDIT: all well?

Totally agree. I've done countless htc phones and each phone is a new challenge. I love my new samsung though.
