What is a the Odin/Flash counter?
Many users call this by three different names, Odin counter, Flash counter, or the Download Counter ( Most Common). This counter appears when the device is in download mode. When you use Odin, or anything else to flash a non Samsung Kernel to the device, this counter will change from "NO" to a number, depending on how many times you flash a kernel using this method will depend on what your counter says.
Why should I care about this?
Normally you wouldn't have to care, however If you have to return your device to Samsung or the carrier. Their technicians are now trained to check this download counter and if it says ANYTHING but "NO" your warranty will be voided, they will either return the device unfixed to you or send you an invoice for the repairs.
My device is fine, is there any advantage to clearing the download counter?
If you have a custom recovery flashed, and are confident you will not be using download mode to flash a non Samsung kernel, I say YES. In the event your device becomes damaged and you are unable to flash it. You will have the confidence of sending it back knowing that the Counter reports "NO" so there is less of a chance that the device will be rejected for repair under warranty.
Is this dangerous?
In a perfect world things never go wrong, but our world is not perfect clearly. You are flashing a boot-loader, specifically the SBL1 (secondary boot-loader #1). You should not ever have an issue flashing this. But In the event your battery dies while flashing this or the zip file becomes corrupt. YOU WILL BRICK. This is not designed to let you reset your counter 100 times, each time you reset the counter, you play with fire. Too many times, and you get burnt. CHECK THE MD5sum! Don't be a fool.
How do i check my counter?
Power your device off, hold Vol Down and turn the device on, keep holding the Vol button until you see download mode appear. Press Vol Up to bypass the warning and your "Custom binary" counter will be the second line, it should say "NO" if you are clean and warranty intact, it will contain a number if not.
Ahhhhhhhh... I get it, so what's this flashable zip do again?
It resets your counter from a numbered value to "NO"

I'll take the dump any way and make you a flashable zip, you can flash it back and see if it still achieves a reset.
Did a compare of my untainted sbl1 to a tainted one. the counter is at the very tail end of the sbl. i may even be able to just reset yours in your sbl dump IF no one here has a tmobile T989 with an untainted counter.
X,
Just a quick question. The .zip in the OP can either be flashed through Clock Work Mod Recovery or Odin, Correct?
Thanks

I can confirm that your zip is working fine. My counter went from 2 to NO. Thank you very much for this.
You're welcome. i had thought about this a while back and just never got around to testing it until a user posted a thread about a user making them for the skyrocket kids.
You could also brick your device flashing junk to the sbl1 block, but that would be unethical for warranty purposes wouldn't it
Thanks for this? Quick question is the only benefit to this for insurance purposes or would this benefit the device by cleaning partitions or the counter and such? Sorry if noobish question lol

Once you've followed the above instructions to get into download mode, you'll see 2 lines that say whether you have a custom binary installed and your current binary. If it says "NO" to custom binary and "Samsung" to current binary installed, your counter is 0. Otherwise it will show the number your counter is at.

Once we have a sbl1 to flash from our ICS odin tar, this will be easy.
Or i could dump mine since my reset counter is not tainted and allow some one who has a tainted counter to try.
mine is a t989d, some one with a t989 will have to dump theirs for the tmo guys. (it may not make a difference, besides device id in download mode) but who knows.
Someone with a tmobile t989
run this command in adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=/sdcard/sbl1.mbn
attach me the output.
Anyways, i trigegred my flash counter with odin and flashed my sbl1 dump back andi t works liek a charm.
grab it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1578184 if any one wants it. Just remember this is from my T989D so im unsure if it will effect a t989 adversely.

you're lucky you didn't brick that was a pretty risky thing. the sbl1 is what makes your device turn on. if you **** that up in any way. your done. its game over. this isn't a rom flash, this is a boot loader.
secondly, your device is now identified as a SGH-I727 according to the boot loader, this may give you grief later on when doing legitimate updates and what not.
Working or not, I'd flash the SBL back to what is meant to be on your device.
I'm still waiting for soem one to hit me up with a dump of the T989 sbl1

If I'm not mistaken, the counter only trips when you flash through odin. Any flashing through CWM doesn't affect the counter.

Ha this thread is the reason that thread you linked was created. Thanks to Mr. X of course.
I just grabbed a tmobile galaxy S2 yesterday, and have read through the root via odin thread.. along with the whole flash counter increase because of using odin.
Now on the galaxy note, I was able to bypass using odin (no counter increase), and flashed the recovery.img directly with adb - using "dd if" command to push directly to the recovery partition ...
This leaves me with 2 questions for the devs on this forum.
Anyone know the recovery partition location on this device? dev/block/mm.....?
Any reason someone thinks this isn't feasible?
Thanks for any input.

You'll have to go into download mode (the first thing you did to root):
1) Pull battery, put battery back in
2) hold vol +/- while plugging your phone into your computer and continue holding until download warning pops up
3) press vol + to enter download mode
There will be two lines to the effect of "Custom Binary Download" and "Current Binary". If they say "NO" and "Samsung Official", respectively, then your counter is at 0. Otherwise it will say "YES" and some counter of what number you're at.
What it means is how many times you have flashed a kernel through odin (NOT CWM; flashing through CWM does not trip any counter). The "big deal" is that this could theoretically be used against you for warranty purposes. If your counter is not at 0 and you send it in for warranty and Samsung checks it (rather unlikely, but possible), they will see that you rooted your phone and can choose to not honor the warranty. But thanks to Mr. X, we now have a flashable zip in CWM that will reset your counter to 0.

Use heimdall to flash one of the .bin files from stock recovery. I had this same exact problem. I flashed (heimdall'ed) everything I could get my hands on and couldn't get my usb jig to reset the counter. Finally at my wits' end I download the stock EL29 md5, untar it, and heimdall'ed every file in it using their corresponding --commands.
I did this:

Is that okay that I just do the factory reset and leave the root on along with twrp?

First, yes u can restore it with everything you have on that one with no issue except if your getting the s4 from another carrier, the bloat might give you issues with it.
Second, If you're returning it and it's rooted your warranty is voided so you need to go back to stock and unroot it and the flash counter that tells if you've made any unauthorized changes to the software might give you issues so I don't now how to reset the flash counter so I would wait until u can restart the flash counter and go back to stock... isn't if I ODIN back to stock would unroot automatically? even remove the recovery as well?
you mean there is no way to check the flash counter or reset?
Odin erases any root files but hey the only way to see if it resets the flash counter is by doing it and once you went back to stock and get on download mode again and once you proceed check at the top left where a small text will say something like, system version: official Samsung, flash counter: 0 or 1, name... Etc... And yes it will take the recovery as well

flash counter only increase if you ODIN anything other than Stock. Correct?
I use the exploit to get the root access, so technically I never ODIN, and my flash counter should be to 0.
question is if I do the ODIN to stock, is that gonna increase the flash counter?
Can I not just go back to stock via kies? that will not increase the flash counter I guess.

I'm not really sure but try to use triangle away and see if it shows u Ur flash counter and if it does don't try to reset it with it Kuz I don't know if it's compatible with the s4 yet

Thanks for the hard work.
Now that someone with development skill has their hands on the tar which we've all been waiting for, what's the possibility of finding out how to remove Knox from the bootloader for those that have Knox at the bootloader level?
I talked to a Samsung sales rep at Best Buy today about Knox being forced down on individual consumers and he acted if he could care less about the whole situation. I told him I've been a long time Samsung customer and I'm debating on jumping ship, he just looked at me and said "If that's what you feel you have to do then do it”
I understand hes just the Samsung sales rep, you'd think he'd still care about customers buying Samsung... Guess one person leaving isn't such a big deal to him. Okay thanks for reading..

Thanks again.. I'll stop bothering now
Thanks for the upload!!! I can now stop spamming my update settings on my phone now I think! I appreciate the detailed instructions about Knox and what not. The newbie in me just wanted to make sure before I proceed with the flash, if I'm fully stocked on MD4 and I use the MK3 tar that was provided, it will essentially be the same as waiting for the OTA update on my phone? I wanted to make sure because Knox scares me and I don't want to trip the counter if I don't need to. I understand that once I have Knox, anything I do to my phone after will trip the counter. Thanks for taking the time to address my questions although I've tried looking in the comments and was not able to find an answer.
I'm still on 4.0.4 (Haven't updated in some ages lol) Can I go straight to this? Or do I have to go through each update individually?
Thanks for all the insane dedication CNexus....is or will there be an MK3 modem only tar in the future?

Regardless of whether or not I include the bootloader, you are stuck with the MK3 bootloader if you've already updated to it.

Then in that case, when I modify the tar it will still have all the firmware, but it will be rootable without tripping Knox

Just the MK3 FULL stock tar extracted from Kies. Very hard to find online, and only extremely slow downloads available, so here it is
This is not rooted. I will do that soon with the root de-la-vega method. Sit tight.
Instructions:
1. Download tar.md5 from above and download Odin
2. Put phone into download mode (power off, then power button + Volume Down, then volume up when prompted)
3. Open Odin (right click > open as administrator)
4. Load stock tar into the PDA slot
5. Start flashing
6. Grab some popcorn because it will take a while
7. Profit

DUDE!!! You are awesome, thank you very much for this.
@CNexus.do we know for the people that have tripped knox. If flashing the tar via odin reset knox or Not? Would be awesome if it reset counter and knox to zero.

I am trying to odin this but keep getting MD5 Hash value is invalid. I have checked MD5 sum and it's correct. What gives?
