Steal Features from S3? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

So they just reveiled the S3 with a bunch of new features... so I am wondering in the future are we gonna be able to port some of these features to the S2?
Possible? Impossible?

You're better off getting the S3

Absolutely should be able to. The SIII seem like more of marginal upgrade than I expected, so our phone should be capable of doing the little gimmicks they showed off. iLeopard, why bother posting? You didn't answer the question he asked at all.

It was a sincere answer on my part. The answer is obvious...yes. The better question is who would bother porting them once everyone flocks to the S3?

I'll probably skip the s3 since they are releasing a new galaxy every year waiting for s4 sounds better

Thats also a possibility, but seeing as how you can get a descent amount of money for the SII then perhaps jumping on the S3 bandwagon is a good idea.

i dont think the phone is such a huge step ahead of our phone in the hardware department. i agree that it seems like a marginal update, the software is what they demo'd the most, which should work fine on our phones.
also, the US Variants will probably not have the quad core exynos, so in that regard, it may be fairly easy to adopt the software on our devices.

I'm planning to buy the GS3, but the international one. I don't think it will be working with tmobile's 1700 band . I also won't settle for a us version like our GS2....

lmao yeah US version is gonna be dual core Krait coz exynos neither support LTE nor tmo 42mbps modem
pretty stupid of samsung and nvidia to release new SoCs without support of newer modems

This seems just as good as SGS2.

If it lands on tmobile I will. Is it just me, or does Hercules actually sounds better turn the sgs 2?
The dual core phone war just started, we will be forgotten. No point of having a phone with no support.

Screw the SG2
I seriously almost passed out when I read about this phone on phandroid.com, no lie. I was sooo bummed out about the htc sensation having a signed kernel, locked/signed bootloader, signed recovery, and that it's memlocked. Which to me sounds like no root ever, and I love htc phones. Then good ol sammy came along with this phone in beast mode, and hopefully will stick with unlocked bootloaders. So yes would be my answer, I will be getting this, in fact I'm saving up already

Teehee, Sammy just crapped on HTC.
They were like "Hmm.... let's release the SAME hardware on their network, up it a bit, unlock the bootloader, and get all the profit"
Smart. I will so get this phone if we aren't getting a SGS2, since it has comparable hardware, and it has Category 24 HSPA+, that right there is a win.

Yep. And with Samsung stepping up their game on source code release, and updates, we know the phone will be great. Samsung was also nice enough to AT&T proof our phone. <3 Sammy
Pure speculation, I find the assumed specs unlikely. We will see. I Would rather just have the sgsii.

If T-mob does not have the SG II, I will buy the Hercules. I am not sure Samsung own chip would be much better than the Qualcomm Snapdragon. But I like the 4.5 in screen, good for my eyes
Also they say it will come out in July, at which time, I will be @ 1 yr of my contract and hopefully T-mob will let me do an early upgrade.
The resolution on that blows

Why would Samsung not use their own processor? Seems fishy. I'll believe those specs when they are officially announced.
Considering the Infuse is only a 1.2ghz SINGLE core processor phone... and this phone is obviously the same thing... With different bands... So don't get too excited. It's not what you think it is...... It just sounds odd to me. But the thought of having a dual core snapdragon without a locked bootloader is pretty exciting.

Probably they want to keep Exynos official to the SGS line, or there's really that much of a shortage, that they can't put the Exynos in th Hercules.

If this is legit and not some stupid rumor, then I'm definitely going to get this phone. I'd prefer samsungs processor in there. but hey, theres plenty of time to see ACTUAL official specs of the phone that will most likely change

Was it a bad idea to get US version?/Also T-Mobile?

I keep seeing all these Roms pop up for the i9300 International version.. and now they are ALREADY starting work on Jelly bean for it...
And yet we (US versions) (especially T-Mobile) don't really have anything.. i'm kind of regretting going US- Anyone else feeling the same?
it would be nice if we could use the same Roms as the international versions.
i'm a past Galaxy note user, and i might go back to that for the time being because the Rom i had for that "Stratosphere" was freaking AMAZING...
(Sorry realize I should have posted this in general )

Yes you're right, this should be moved to the general section. The main problem with the international version for t mobile is you'll only get edge network speeds. You are right though typically the international versions get more Rom attention at the local versions do. I need my 4G so I'm happy with the t mobile version version

chill... this phone will have everything the international one has and more. keep in mind, its only been out since the 21st, supply was limited. nothing we can do about that. we have some great things to come especially since the different carriers all have pretty much the same hardware so there will be A LOT of roms. this phone will be epic. so sit down and shut up and watch the show!

I would agree that it should have as much development but the international one will more than likely get quicker updates. So all in all I wouldn't really say its gonna have more. Both phones have their pluses and minuses. Even though all the US variants share common hardware combined they are still aimed at a smaller target market than the International model. Less people owning it = less development usually. I'm on T-Mobile myself but would rather have edge and the Int model than 4G and the s4 processor. Either way you win with this phone, its amazing in any variation.

I don't see how anyone could want an international version on edge speeds with t-mobile over the U.S. dual-core with 4g speeds lol. I mean it's cool to tell people that your phone is quad-core, but c'mon. And I get as much satisfaction telling people my phone has 2gb's of RAM lol
And obviously it's early but development is going to be crazy on this phone. Dev's push other Dev's to work harder so it's almost like exponential growth when it really gets going (look at the Galaxy Nexus forums). Plus as it looks like the Galaxy Nexus has been banned in the U.S. you can bet we'll get even more dev's jumping on here
Thats what im saying .... Like people that use iphones on TMobile or Simple Mobile and they still paying for 4G data .... SMh....

T-Mobile is refarming their 1900mhz spectrum for 3/4G data so some people can already use the Int version on T-Mobile 3/4G. The want for a quad core phone isn't for **** sizing contest as you suggest here at least not for me. A perfectly fluid UI and gaming/browser performance are my main motivations. I live in MN and barely get anything above edge on my galaxy nexus anyway so having only edge really doesn't affect me, that's what WiFi is for. If I used my mobile plan for my data needs I'd get throttled in a day. My mother had a HTC one s with the s4 processor while speedy it still couldn't keep up with an qHD resolution. Again I think both devices are top notch and both have advantages over one another so I think I boils down to preference.

You gotta remember the international version has been out for a month, the TMO source code only released a few days ago, and the stock ROM like 2 days ago. International development has had a month headstart on us. We'll catch up. Not regretting my purchase at all. We'll be fine.
Heck no bro tmobile sgs2 has some of the best developers I've ever seen mainly roman, whitehawk and tdj. Tdj is amazing and I'm sure someone will get him a s3 in due time. If you want 4g then you gotta stick with us carriers, int does not have right radio for tmobile and no lte.
Tmobile is the only 4g in my area and it rocks. No idea when lte is ever going to come so its tm for me.

How is development for the SIII?

So I'm due for an upgrade and I was wondering about this phone as it's the only one I really want. I currently have a motorola phone that was a flagship when it was first released(Atrix 4G) and while it was a decent phone, Motorola didn't really support it and stick to its release schedules with the phone. Normally this would not be a bad thing since there is the development community that one can fall back on, but this hindered the development community since developers needed to rely on Motorola for drivers and kernel along with Nvidia because the processor in the phone was a Tegra and I'm sure you guys already know how much Nvidia and open source don't go well together lol.
Anyways I was wondering if the SIII has(or will have) any sort of issues in the same area due to closed source or Samsung not releasing drivers,etc... to developers after major releases. I would wait for the SIV, but the phone is getting into screen size territory I'm not comfortable with and I don't want a Nexus 4 because the battery life doesn't seem to be as great as the SIII. Basically once I get my next phone, I want to be able to hold onto it for a few years without feeling the need to upgrade because of out of date software. The hardware in the SIII seems more than sufficient to be future proof.
Another side question: would there be any mods that retain some of the software features found in touchwiz or add any such as multitasking? Not a deal breaker, but just wondering.

Seriously doubt Samsung will "prevent" users from being able to mod unofficially. This is one of their two flagship devices. However, it is the carriers that should worry you more. Remember that there are different hardware versions of the SIII as well. Most likely the international versions will be always ahead in getting new updates. On a carrier such as AT&T you are most likely to be the last to receive an update, if you get it at all. Ultimately, if you want guaranteed updates, Nexus 4 is the only sure way to go.
And seriously, read before you ask about mods. Yes and Yes to both questions. Read through and you will find a lot.

This is not completely true. Samsung has already angered alot of the top developers by not releasing the proper info on the exynos chip in some phones. Even after saying they would. Even some CM maintainers have sworn off Samsung until them come threw. But they still have some of the best tract records for android. Even though Sony is moving up fast.
@OP you will always find something about one company or another that wall cause issues with open source development. This is due to the phone OEM not owning all the software code for the devices. Take CDMA phones. They use a closed sourced phone to work on the network. Nothing Samsung can do about it as it is not theirs. We won't even start on the WiFi and BT chip.
In the end. Get a phone that does what you want and need. Development should never be a first choice. That is just a bonus.

I seriously doubted Motorola would have had issues with the Atrix seeing as how it was their flagship device as well. Seeing as how I've never had a Samsung smartphone, I'm not sure how they handle their updates and it has nothing to do with the carriers as much as it had to do with their Nvidia and Motorola because of Tegra and the fingerprint scanner/lapdock.
And "seriously" I've browsed through the developers forum before to see how active it was. All I wanted was a quick confirmation to my question instead of scanning each thread for a phone I may or may not get.

Mainly because Samsung lost the suit against apple, so they've gone back to the drawing board in many ways. To continue investing in devices that led to them being sued would just not be financially intelligent.

Guys....its simple. Had Samsung not made 100 different S2 variations for some dumb reason, they would have updated us I'm sure. But as there's so many different models out there and the device is 2 generations behind.....they drew the update line in the sand. That's it.
Except the newer one I guess, and I heard the international one....yet to be seen.
That's electronic life. Very short support life span. At least with phones. Maybe if the phone builders didn't put out a new model every 8 months things would be different. But they just love milking the techy's that gotta always have the latest and greatest.
Plus....I agree with the $$$$$ reason too.

But with that logic, the s3 is OLDER than the s4, and yet it was updated AFTER the s4 was released....
the galaxy s2-plus (almost as old as the galaxy s2 itself) also has a 4.2.2 update as well. So, tell me more about this $$$ theory of yours :cyclops:

the s2-plus came out after the s3(jan 2013), which was a really surprising move for samsung(but in my opinion it was just another way for them to rake in the cash). and pretty much all of the android phones will have ended up with at least 2 system updates from thier respective manufacturers. our phone actually got 3 system updates, it came with 2.3.6 went to 4.0.3 and then to 4.0.4 and now to 4.1.2, if our phone kept getting updates there would be no need to buy a new phone, so once again it all comes back down to they want to make more money. and in this world that is all that any successful company is going to do, try and get you to buy there next new product(even if it means that they have to stop updating a perfectly good device to do it). If they didn't, they wouldn't succeed as a business.
In short our phone is not going to get an official 4.2.2 update because samsung wants you to buy a new phone so that they continue to make more $$$.

buy a new phone.. ok, buy an S3 (which is NOT NEW) BOOM 4.2.2 update. and that works out good for who? Especially if you buy one 2nd hand, does samsung make 2nd hand money? nope. I get the whole it's all about money thing, but apparently nobody gets what I'm trying to say. IF those old, non new phones have it....why not this one. It's old, not new, similar specs. Oh well, If I knew how I'd make my own TW 4.2.2 build lol
I don't think the s3 is on 4.2.2 is it?

I dunno what carrier, but I know I saw one with a 4.2.2 build, that was touchwiz. Very similar to the S4.
maybe it was unlocked/international? Google it.
My questions were somewhat answered, so pointless thread now.

Anything you saw was most likely a leak at best. No S3 model has an official update from Samsung, even the International, I checked.
