Cause Samsung didn't make one. Actually, 4.1.2 is more than likely all we'll officially get. I think they're done upgrading S2's....aside from perhaps the international version I read somewhere.

Mainly because Samsung lost the suit against apple, so they've gone back to the drawing board in many ways. To continue investing in devices that led to them being sued would just not be financially intelligent.
I really hate tw. I'd agree with others. I don't think Samsung it's going to be updating our phones anymore.
There will be no more updates for the Galaxy S2, I saw this confirmed not long ago, but I forget where.

But with that logic, the s3 is OLDER than the s4, and yet it was updated AFTER the s4 was released....
the galaxy s2-plus (almost as old as the galaxy s2 itself) also has a 4.2.2 update as well. So, tell me more about this $$$ theory of yours :cyclops:

Guys....its simple. Had Samsung not made 100 different S2 variations for some dumb reason, they would have updated us I'm sure. But as there's so many different models out there and the device is 2 generations behind.....they drew the update line in the sand. That's it.
Except the newer one I guess, and I heard the international one....yet to be seen.
That's electronic life. Very short support life span. At least with phones. Maybe if the phone builders didn't put out a new model every 8 months things would be different. But they just love milking the techy's that gotta always have the latest and greatest.
Plus....I agree with the $$$$$ reason too.

the s2-plus came out after the s3(jan 2013), which was a really surprising move for samsung(but in my opinion it was just another way for them to rake in the cash). and pretty much all of the android phones will have ended up with at least 2 system updates from thier respective manufacturers. our phone actually got 3 system updates, it came with 2.3.6 went to 4.0.3 and then to 4.0.4 and now to 4.1.2, if our phone kept getting updates there would be no need to buy a new phone, so once again it all comes back down to they want to make more money. and in this world that is all that any successful company is going to do, try and get you to buy there next new product(even if it means that they have to stop updating a perfectly good device to do it). If they didn't, they wouldn't succeed as a business.
In short our phone is not going to get an official 4.2.2 update because samsung wants you to buy a new phone so that they continue to make more $$$.

buy a new phone.. ok, buy an S3 (which is NOT NEW) BOOM 4.2.2 update. and that works out good for who? Especially if you buy one 2nd hand, does samsung make 2nd hand money? nope. I get the whole it's all about money thing, but apparently nobody gets what I'm trying to say. IF those old, non new phones have it....why not this one. It's old, not new, similar specs. I dunno what carrier, but I know I saw one with a 4.2.2 build, that was touchwiz. Very similar to the S4.
maybe it was unlocked/international? Google it.

If its anything like the moment or epic, it will be when the phone is at its end of life and no longer sold in the stores. Oh, and it will probably be the last official youll see.
I don't expect to see a jelly bean update for this phone. I would genuinely be surprised if it sees official jb.
Although they said the sgsII that doesn't mean the epic 4g touch variant. More stuff to support and more stuff to go wrong that becomes sprints problem. Also, people would see how capable this exynos really is and not go get an sgs3, with the only differences being the screen and a 4g chip you're never gonna use anyway, because sprint wants the world to buy iphones. I'm getting off this sinking ship and switching to verizon asap.

The epic branding has been retired, its now the sph-d710 galaxy s2, Samsung has promised support for a minimum of 18months after release on all devices starting with the gs2 series so we will more than likely get official JB, and it won't take as long as ICS since the upgrade from ICS to JB isn't as intensive as from GB to ICS was. Samsung has sworn off carrier branded devices and starting with the sgs3 all devices will be nearly identical except for the few differences for network compatibility. Mostly radios and modems, otherwise hardware and software will now be as close to exactly the same as the original international variant and all devices will be available on all carriers as close to the same release date as possible.

I'm trying to decide between the note 2 and the new nexus for my personal line, whichever I don't get for it ill be adding on my work line, ill prob be getting the sgs3 on my personal line and putting the et4g on my work line when the note 2 launches until my upgrade comes up in the beginning of Dec. My dads got the sgs3 and will be preordering the note 2 so ill get the sgs3 once his note comes in. That's one good thing about having a technophile for a dad he buys a new phone off contract everytime it drops and gives me his old one so i don't have to use up upgrades too often unless I want a nexus or something he hasn't bought yet. He's been sticking with Samsung since the et4g launched, which I'm fine with I got sick of dealing with HTC and their locked up bootloaders after the GB update on the og evo and after the moto photon I won't ever buy another moto device that thing sucked to try and mod, I can't go with a device that you have to sacrifice something to be able to flash

They won't do a pure Android release of Jelly Bean I don't think because it would be too much of a change for regular people, even though most of us would love it. IMO, It really doesn't matter! I have used JB and ICS on my phone, and other than Google Now, I don't see the need to update to JB.
I look at it like this... the standard consumer is not rooted. The OEM and carrier have to smooth out bugs, and make the transition from ICS -> JB a seemless integration. This makes for a better customer experience.
Thats the business man... why release a sub par product and have thousands of support tickets for small minor issues.
From your sig, you're running JB already.
Pretty depressing if you ask me. God if the new nexus phone wasn't being made by LG I'd probably be all over that thing at this point.

Telus' S3 will get JB before the end of November, so I'm thinking we should be very close by.
Full application of project butter in an official release of jb will be worth it. Only reason my nexus is still stock is that the only rom on the s3 that comes close to matching its fluidity, for me at least, is tasks aokp. It's night, and day. Slow rollouts of software are just one of those burdens of this era in development. Fortunately, the software is beginning to be more, and more worth it. Someday you'll lecture your grandkids on how we didn't have all this fancy "cognitive request firmware updates, and 5tb/second data speeds" lol

By the time we even get Android 4.1, Android 4.2 will already be out in the market.
First, 4.2 will not be key lime pie.
Second, its not Samsungs fault, its the carriers.
And being the carriers fault - you have to wonder. Do they each only have like 2 people working on the Updates...or wtf. lol

Because when there is a bug in CM, they can go *shrug*, we'll add it to the known issues list, like the bluetooth audio not working right. When there is a bug in a carrier supplied ROM, think of all the people that are going to want to call AT&T and be like 'Hey this isn't working, FIX IT!'. That costs money to pay the customer service people and it costs money from a PR point of view.
The carriers strive to make things as bug free as possible (which, is laughable considering some of the updates some carriers have pushed out, or even the state of a phone at release *cough*G2x*cough*). If they don't do super extensive testing on everything BEFORE the release, they're going to have to do the same testing AFTER the release, but after it costs them money in customer service and PR image.
It sucks that another manufacturer/carrier is delaying the update. Do we buy a phone on the promise/hope we will see the next update? I don't. "Why am I not getting update XX" seems to be a common complaint. I came from the Atrix 2. Motorola promissed ICS and an unlockable bootloader. The phone is now borderline if not already end of life with At&t and is just getting the ICS update and still a locked bootloader. I bought my GSIII with the thought "cool I will get JB" but didn't care when. With all of the leaks available, if you want JB, you can get it. Seeing some of the bugs in the leaks, do you really want that to be your update? If you got the update and had these bugs, thered posts of "how could they release this buggy version?" Don't get me wrong, I would like to see manufactures and carriers stand by their word, but I realize there are more important things to worry about than why my update is delayed or not getting it. If you want a phone that guarantees you'll see an update, get a ,cough cough, Iphone. Not all features may work but hey, you'll get your update. My one and a half cents and a THANKS to the hard working devs that bring us these leaks and roms (FOR FREE) to satisfy our need to update. YOU GUYS ROCK!

Well and doing carrier certification. I think that's more of what ends up taking a long time than updating any carrier add-on software.

this sucks but never a problem with custom roms and Samsung is the easiest to update.
I'm new to Android, so maybe that makes me naive. But, I'd like to bring up a few points:
1) How do you know JB for the AT&T GS3 is delayed until 2013? No one has given a release date. Heck, it might be 2014 or 2015. It's misleading to post a title like that.
2) "Coming months:" this ambiguity goes both ways. Sprint released their GS3 JB OTA update today.
3) AT&T is taking long to update their bloatware?! There are three stupid apps: AT&T Hotspots, AT&T Messages, and AT&T Navigator. AND AT&T's already released the Note 2, which comes with Jelly Bean. Thus, these apps have already been updated to work with Jelly Bean!
The holdup on AT&T's part is something else...
Sweet!
Just a rumor though. Hopefully it's true! And usually Sammobile is very accurate.

Sprint is not going to waste their time updating a phone from two generations ago (GS2) to Jellybean when the GS4 is coming with Jellybean! That would be a big marketing mistake on Sprint's part. Not to mention the whole CDMA thing which complicates matters even more. We all Sprint is the least profitable of the big 4 US carriers so they aren't going to shoot themselves in the foot like that. Not to mention, those subscribers who still have the GS2 will not be as excited to upgrade to the GS4 if the android version is the same. Sprint wants them to upgrade! GS2 and GS3 will not get these updates from Sprint I am willing to put money on it lol.

Um ok, GS3 already has jellybean and GS2 has had multiple jellybean leaked roms so we know they are working on it. Keep in mind the cdma GS2 was just released for Boost and Virgin Mobile within the past couple months and has not been put on end of life by sprint yet, so it is still receiving support funding for software updates.
Also if you were familiar with the update life cycle of top tier samsung phones on sprint e.g. The GS1 & GS2 you would see 2 full years of android version upgrades is the norm not the exception. Look for the GS2 to get 4.1.2 and be EOL end of this year, and the GS3 to get its final update next year and EOL end of next year.

Honestly, as far as Carriers go, I believe Sprint is the best when it comes to OS updates. AT&T probably comes in second. And I'm basing this off carrier-specific phones, not international devices on GSM carriers.

I don't understand why anyone is surprised by this. Every Galaxy S phone has been updated to two major versions of android.
Galaxy S (eclair) - froyo and gingerbread
GSII (gingerbread) - ICS and jelly bean
It only makes sense that that the gs3 would get the same treatment and be updated to Key Lime Pie when it's only had one major update (jelly bean)

I believe we will get it, but they are focused on getting the GS4 selling right now so they will likely wait another 6 months or so.
Right now, you gotta pay to play with the official 4.2 phones.....or go the CM10 route which has bugs.

I believe we will get it, but they are focused on getting the GS4 selling right now so they will likely wait another 6 months or so.
Right now, you gotta pay to play with the official 4.2 phones.....or go the CM10 route which has bugs.

I don't see the S2 getting Jelly Bean 4.2 update. That phone is to old for that. I see the S3 getting the 4.2 update though, but probably not the 5.0 though. By then most will have upgraded to the S4 or whatever Samsung has out.

I respectfully disagree. After looking at the specs for the s4, I think most people will probably hold out for the S 5. It looks like some minimal hardware upgrades and mostly software upgrades, which I believe the s3 will handle very easily. just my humble opinion though
All Battery results are on a 6300mah battery, unless otherwise noted!
We'll have to wait an see. Would rather get one that is tested and none to work then see them push to release one that is buggy.
Hopefully 4.2 comes to the us galaxy s3 none of them got premium suite update feature just the 4.1.2 that's all
It could also be that Samsung, not the carriers, puts the brakes on the S3 in favor of selling (forcing) the S4. Like when Moto stopped supporting the Photon (then a flagship device) within 6 months in order to sell more new "flagship devices" rather than update existing usable consumer products. Consumers who bought into the "latest, greatest" Moto had to offer at the time thinking they would be good for at least a couple years of contract.
It's a double edge sword where someone is going to get cut, no matter if it's from the carrier who doesn't want to spend the money to add their junk, or the manufacture who doesn't want to update "old" products.
With the devices of today, and the power they have, I see the trend moving more and more to the rooting/dev. arena to make existing devices more usable for longer periods of time.
Tech is so far advanced that now, within the terms of a typical 2 year contract, not much can be added to make a consumer justify the cost unless they just HAVE to be "better" than anyone else.
Having said that, the easiest way to continue new sales is to stop developing/supporting "older" devices.
Every time I buy a new phone with the latest Android on it, they release a new android a few weeks later. ..4.3 had only been out a short time and barely no phones have it.. And now there's 4.4....pissed....

NOTE 3
You wanted Samsung to delay the Note 3 release so they could put 4.4 on it? dafuq
If you want the latest android updates fastest buy a nexus device
I was on the same upset mood as you with android. However, with the note 3, I have no complain anymore. I haven't had any lag at all since purchase a month ago. It has all the features you need and more. I can finally stop chasing newest and greatest device/software with the note 3.
Sent from my SM-N900T using xda app-developers app
Yup, and that's the choice you have to make when buying a non-Nexus device. Either put up with the outdated stock ROMs or switch to AOSP-based ROMs like Cyanogen, then you will have the latest and greatest. Samsung likely won't put out a 4.4 ROM till sometime in the spring.
I knew there would be a post like this, and I thought about doing it (sarcastically)...
...Face it, anytime you buy a new android phone, at most the new android version is maybe a year away, no matter what phone you get... (unless nexus) there is going to be a period of time where you dont have the latest and greatest software...
...but, it has been floating around that AOSP roms are in the process of being brought to note 3 (I think by cyanogenmod) and once the first (not to buggy) one comes out, the offshoots wont be far behind (PA/AOKP/carbon *my fave*) now, of course we dont know for sure if any of those will ever come to note 3, but more than likely pa and aokp will (I would think) and it just a matter of time.
so, there is hope for 4.3 (aosp) and 4.4 coming to our note 3 before samsung even gets a chance...
Now this is where it gets really interesting, samsung and HTC are trying to one up each other, or at least that is how it seems to me, and htc said that the HTC ONE will have 4.4 within 90 days... and that phone is much older than the note 3. so hopefully for once sammy will try to beat them to the punch.
Im sure that at SOME point note 3 will have kit kat, just a matter of time.
Oh, and this is what samsung has to say about 4.4 right now
btw, I kind of feel the same way, but its not like it wasnt expected. cant be mad about something you basically knew was going to happen.
my hope is that samsung will do the google play note 3 thing, but with the spen being the "main" feature of note 3, and google play edition would cut that out, its highly unlikely that would happen, but one can dream

We won't see 4.4 til next year. Maybe January-February. Samsung is still going to be pushing the Note 3, since their "curved display" phone won't have similar specs of the note 3 anyways. Note 3 and S4 will see the updates first of course...
You dont buy samsung note devices for the quick updates, you buy them for their originality and beast like specs/software. If your looking for updates go with the nexus line otherwise you only have yourself to blame.

THIS IS TRUTH......... The other thing I find amusing is 4.4 is not that much different than 4.3 I have played around on my tablet with it and TBH...... I would not get that excited about it. :cyclops:

I can't find the source but I read that the S3/S4/Note2/Note3 will be getting 4.4 in November because they want to ensure compatibility with their new watch.
Dumbest first world problem ever. Note3 has been out a month and 4.4 has been out 2 days of which I don't even know if source has been released yet. Imagine the horror if Samsung released the Note3 with 4.2.2!

True. Just for clarity though, source is available from news reports anyway. I haven't tried to sync it. Also, I expect Samsung has access to pre release source along with moto, HTC, and other partners.
Honestly though, 4.4 doesn't bring a ton. These days, new point releases of Android aren't nearly as big a deal as they used to be. I'll likely give it a try once builds are available, but I'm quite happy with the version on the note 3. I would like to see all the manufacturer's up their game though, if for nothing else than security patches. There's no excuse for the "master key" patch taking as long as it did to get released. And that's equally on the carriers.

Absolutely true! If I wanted the latest Android, I wouldn't buy such a heavily skinned device like the Note! The GS4 might see KitKat before spring, but if the Note does before next Christmas I'll be very pleasantly surprised.

I like all of you was happy to hear the news. However, with kitkat comes a new way (sounds not good for people who like to move items to removable sd cards) for us to manage our files. Im still a little confused on exactly what this means, but I guess time will tell.

Should we start a pool on when it'll actually come out? I'm betting something like 8 months from now.

You know AT&T will be the last and Verizon will be first, hopefully AT&T will decide to release the update to the S3.
For god sake, please remove the 4.3 Knox bootloader in the KitKat update.
No more official updates for S3, Android 4.3 was the last update.

That's from Samsung Poland regarding the international i9300 version.
Pretty sure the international i9300 will get the 4.4.2 update elsewhere in Europe.
And unless Samsung USA backtracks on its commitment to bring Android 4.4.2 to the North American SGS3, I'm confident we'll see it.

The problem that I have is that the official announcement says "select carriers" leaving me to believe that there is a possibility it could never happen with AT&T. Of course since AT&T is so large I think it will go through to avoid a massive swarm of complaints. It really comes down to how quickly they will push the release.

Pretty sure Sprint releases the first update, followed by T-Mobile...then AT&T and finally Verizon. It's been that way for all devices. Ex.: the 4.3 update.
WOW, ANOTHER TOY TO PLAY WITH. OH MY GOD. WHEN DO WE GET IT? WHEN DO WE GET IT? HURRY UP AT&T. I CANNOT WAIT. OH MY GOD! WHEN DO WE GET IT? WHEN DO WE GET IT?
Look, if we ever get this update, can at least some of you hold off for a little bit and see what the update does to some of the other phones first (does it lock the bootloader, does it make battery life worse, what apps might have issues, is there a way to go back in case something goes wrong) and not make the same mistake that so many of us make with these phones by rushing to these toys, oops, updates impatiently the very first day that they come out. I call these updates toys because with the exception of the phones that have major issues, all these updates are around here is just something new to play with.
BUT WHAT IF I WANT TO, SHORTYDOGGG?
Forget it. I see that I won't get through to everybody because we are all different. Carry on everyone.
