Media Scanner Running Indefinitely - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hey guys, the media scanner on my phone won't stop running and it's making my phone hot as hell. I've already rebooted twice, and I've cleared cache and dalvik.
I'm running Blazer 4.0 and I'm underclocked and undervolted. Kernel is Gunslinger 1.4.1. Modem is FC24. Any help would be appreciated!

EDIT: After a couple of hours it went away on its own. Oh well!

I had to restore a nandroid the one time I had that happen.

this just started happening to mine yesterday. it comes and goes though, never just gets stuck there. i noticed when i pull the NB down it's showing as "scanning media storage usb". so crazy that you just posted this. maybe its our phones wigging out because sprint is currently trying to push ICS OTA to all et4gs right now can't hurt to dream lol.
sent from my BMF-D710

It's a corrupt mediascanner.apk or mediaprovider.apk (depending on what part it's stuck on.) Try redownloading Blazer and push both apks to /system/app.
EDIT: I've had this happen to me when I tampered with mediascanner.apk while theming.

I had this issue not too long ago. it will drain the battery in nothing. To fix it, clear media storage from the apps menu (in settings) and then reboot (so it rescans the card). You'll see that media storage data cache is very large (about 100 to 250 MB).
Some ppl have reported that doing this resets ringtones

Media storage issues
I had a similar problem- My issue began ( I presume ) when I had phone in Aegis case) in a horizontal position in leather pouch- If I somehow moved around to my side where phone was at- I would inadvertently press the power button to cause it to reboot- Then a ringtone ( minimal tone ) would play for 5-10 minutes- drove me nuts- So I tried this- In app Rom Toolbox, I went into root browser, system/media/ringtones/minimal tone ( I had identified the name of tone playing first by going through titles of tones in all sounds ) I clicked on the tone- and selected to delete that file. Then I rebooted phone. However- I am not an expert-
If I did this wrong- then a big oops- However- whenever I reboot phone after
I flashed a rom ( blazer 4.0,) Then 4.1 1 month later- gunslinger kernel, and now fc 24 modem- the tone is gone still- EXCEPT when I ran calkulin modified zip- it somehow restored the deleted file. And I deleted it again. now- a brief tone plays for 2-3 secs. I asked developer of rom toolbox why if a file is deleted- how it can be restored. Anyway- I ended up deleting any ringtones/tones that suck- that came with phone to remove additional bloat and avoid annoying sounds issue(s). Feedback/corrections welcomed !!

Yeah it works but when you put more files on the phone the problem reocurs.I have to clear the cache everytime i put new files on my phone-and thats not good.
Hopefully Jellybaen fixes it,this is worst problem i had in all my android life.

I had this happening at random about 6 months ago on stock rooted EL29.
Reflashed with OneClick Odin, didn't fix it. Then with full wipe OC-Odin, still there. Tried Calks EL29 ROM with full wipes, it kept doing it.
Reformatted and even replaced the microSD card, no cookie.
The only thing that solved this issue for me was full wipe, ODIN stock, then format BOTH internal and external storage after first boot.
Just make sure you back up anything of importance beforehand from your phone.

Maybe you have some corrupt media that's screwing with it? Considering you did a full wipe when you reinstalled each ROM

[Q] Freezing on all ICS roms the past few weeks.

For the past few weeks Ive been running AOKP and it has been randomly freezing up on me. Its always the same way. I grab my phone from my pocket, I wake it and what ever i try and do doesnt matter cause its frozen. Then in a few seconds its fine. It happens a few times a day. Well I finally got sick of it and switched to CM9 and I started getting the same thing. So I went to Calks ICS 1.5 which ive never had problems on before but it still does it on this rom too. There has to be something wrong with my E4GT. Can someone help ?

I'd say it's probably time for a full wipe. If I've been doing a lot of flashing, I like to wipe out both SD's, odin back to stock and start absolutely fresh. A lot of apps leave file behind on SD and I like to clean up so I know everything is running properly. I posted my method here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24056900&postcount=9930
Up to you which one-click odin you use but this way you're ensured a completely fresh start. BTW, you DO use Calk's format all whenever you go to a new rom correct?
Yes I usually use calks format but not everytime . I usually follow the devs instructions and they don't always say use calks format all. Should I use it no matter what?

Ok gotcha, that is a very good question. You mentioned AOKP and I'm not very familiar with it but I do know it is designed very differently than the ICS leak that is out and also CM9 is different also. You may want to ask about AOKP but I think the safest way to go if you're using ICS and want to flash a ROM or Kernel is to ALWAYS Odin (mobile app or from computer) Chris41G's Stock EL26 Kernel from here:
http://chris41g.devphone.org/index.php?dir=EpicTouch/Stock+Repack/EL26/
Flash Calkulin's Format All, and then flash your rom. If you keep doing it that way, you should stay safe.
Now, there are a few kernels coming out for ICS that say they're safe to flash ROM's with but I'm not taking the chance. I hear too many stories about people forgetting what rom or kernel they're using and accidentally bricking their phones while on ICS. I like my phone too much, I'm going to keep using the EL26 method.
I just read today, a couple users on AOKP tried to flash something else from AOKP recovery and they hosed up their phones possibly.
The format all is safe to use and clears all the data and wipes the partitions so you can flash a rom cleanly. That is what it was designed for.
All the freezing started started soon after I started flashing AOKP and CM9. Ive never done a fresh wipe before I've only been flashing for a few months. All I'm interested in saving is my music and if I can my text messages but most important my music. I saw the thread you posted for me but is there anything more detailed that I can use to back up to my PC and to wipe my phone?
I cant figure out how to save my pictures to my PC, as soon as I connect it theres no file anywhere, only the stupid screenshots i took. This phone is a nightmare . Somebody please help me I need to do wipe it clean. Also when I connect my phone to my laptop, it gives me 2 different ports removable disk E, and removable disk D. my pictures are no where to be found. It makes no sense at all. somebody please just give me a detailed description on how to save my pictures to my laptop and wipe this stupid phone clean. I have the EL29 root files and CWM I just need to know how to reset it like it came out of the box.

1. Its not a stupid phone, it works great.
2. Make sure you have the correct Samsung drivers installed on your laptop. Google and you can find them easily.
3. Once your phone is recognized by your PC, copy n paste your files. You will have 2 places to copy from if you did this correctly, one is internal card and the other is external SD.
4. If you can't get these results, you bricked your phone from not reading beforehand.
5. If all else fails, go to download mode with volume down+power when your phone is off and try sfhubs ek02 one click method.
6. Profit.

You are not understanding. I have correct drivers installed and my pc does recognize my phone. ive copied and pasted my music successfully but under pictures is only my screenshots. all the other pictures that i have on here that i would like to save are not here. I know what im talking about ive done this many times. theres obviously something wrong with this phone because when i turn on usb storage i get 2 to pick from. Disk E and Disk D. one gives me more access to my phone that the other . Id like to take a pic of it and show you but as you know i cant take a picture with my phone while its in sync.
why would I wanna use EKO2 method?? it should be EL29 right ??
Always do a full wipe when changing platforms. Ics to aokp, aokp to cm9. You can get away with wiping cache and dalvk cache when upgrading to the next release of same rom usually, but if anything strange happens wipe and reflash.

Look for a folder called 'DCIM' for the pictures.
Also it doesn't really matter EK02 or EL29. I think sfhub said something about EK02 being special in some way but I just can't think of it right now.
EL26 is the other that is good for flashing to ICS. I havent noticed any difference between EL26 and EL29. You don't really need to make a backup on your computer if you just copy your pics over to the SD card. Ive flashed this phone proly 100 times and its never touched the SD card.

He's having issues so I recommended a full wipe which included formatting both the internal and external SD.
Maybe not necessary but a file cleanup couldn't hurt.

ive been having the same freezing issue since FF02, its pretty annoying and i hope it gets fixed before OTA. if not ill just run a older leak

[Q] Is this Normal?

In August I bought a SGS2 for my wife, and a SGS3 for myself...
Her phone's running stock non-rooted ICS.
It has some software loaded but nothing too extreme... the ICS update was installed via Kies, and her phone was wiped. - (she wasn't very happy with me when that happened). She uses the stock TW launcher, and stock lock screen, nothing exciting...
Periodically (generally after the phone's been on for several days) the phone pauses and tends to kind of stop... (it'll stop while flipping pages on the launcher)... and it will kind of sit there... and sometimes it requires a reboot... and/or potentially a battery pull...
I haven't pulled a logcat on it yet (not sure if I have the drivers loaded for that at this point think I do... )
She's afraid to let me root the phone because I might "screw up" her contacts, etc...
Thoughts?

Back up contacts to sim card or sd card. Then root it and put a good custom rom on it. It should run alot better after that.

I agree with ArcticFish and then Odin back to Android 2.3.6 or Android 4.0.4 using this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359 . A fresh copy via Odin cures many symptoms. If you take the time to read the thread you’ll have no problems. Of course you can always come back here and ask for help.

Grab Call log backup and sms back up from the play store and back them up as well before rooting. Will not lose anything that way and of course backup contacts.
One of her concerns is contacts. (Specifically the joining between those stored in Facebook vs those stored in Google.)
I'd thought I could basically Odin either cwm or tarp, make a nandroid, and then flash a supersu zip, and then use titanium backup to back it up...
Sounds like there's potential value to work on her to let me switch her Rom...
I know the stock Rom Odin file for the s3 doesn't wipe data... does the one fir the s2 wipe the data partition?
Also it's there a Odin file for the s2 that already has root injected like for the s3? (I looked, but didn't see one)

So it almost sounds like I should avoid UVLH1 on this phone... since I keep getting suggestions to revert to 2.3.6...
Look scifan, ICS 4.0.3 and 4.0.4 updates came through Kies and it corrupted some files along the way. One solution was to clear the cache and that help many people. I think if you wipe your phone properly before Odin. It’s pretty darn stable. This is my observation via trial and error.
This is also how I wipe my phone clean before Odin or flashing any rom.
*wipe data/factory reset
*wipe cache partition
*go to Mounts and Storage and select format /system
*go to advanced and Wipe Dalvik Cache
*Fix Permissions
just do the suggested backups, wipe and flash the newest Jedi rom. Its runs perfectly and looks completely stock

I'm not sure how great is great for you but this is what I do to ensure i have a fresh rom install to stock.
1) After flashing stock rom from odin, battery pull
2) Wipe factory settings and cache partition from recovery
3) Let phone settle for 5mins upon entering into homescreen
4) Format internal sd and ext sd card from PC
5) Factory reset from settings
See if its better for you. Usually after flashing, media will scan the phone for around 5mins so its a little laggy at first. Should be fine after that
Isn't formatting the internal sd after the rom is already installed going to delete some important files?
I feel exactly the same. Wiping everything before flashing a new ROM. It may be just in my head, we probably got used to the speed but I don't know, it just feels a bit slower than before on stock.

Of cos... common sense will be backing up your data first. I had a conflict with a media file from previous rom file before and media scan went bonkers.
Anyway after a factory reset... those samsung folders etc will all be generated back. You dont have to worry about losing anything unless you have important files like pictures etc in it. If thats the case, just make a backup to the pc and copy back to your sd

If you feel the phone is sluggish.
Go to developement options,
1) Set all animation scale to 0.5 or turn it off. ( Do take note, that if u turn off animation, Touchwiz will crash whenever you try edit pages )
2) Tick Force GPU rendering
And you will feel the extra smoothness

not really, just you dont need to disable "animator duration scale" and you wont get fc while trying to delete home page. Make it 0.5x and other scales you can disable

(UPDATE2: CAPTURED 2 LOGS) Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.

I have ran calkulin 2.8.1 el29 for a long time without this issue. I have recently ran gb08 and am now on fl24. I have had many programs installed but have not yet tried running only stock programs to see if the problem pops up. Things that I think were going on were possibly bluetooth was on. I don't remember if it happens when connected to something or not. One thing I have figured out is it is not the os. It very well could be a new update to a program that causes it. I haven't narrowed it down to which one yet. I suppose I could uninstall everything except the bare essentials and see how it goes. I know this explanation might be too vague at the moment but maybe someone else out there has experienced this and/or could offer advice with ideas for using the process of elimination. I just removed a program or two and should start somewhere as a basis to start from. I have also formatted the built in storage and the external sd card. I have a new sandisk 64gb but it was rebooting with my old pny 32gb. As far as I know, no programs are installed on the physical card. Reboots happen with a real samsung battery(s) and trexcell extended batteries. The batteries are different ages but that seems to make no difference. Here is a list of programs I am running:
-expense manager pro 1.8.5
-gmail 4.2.1
-google play services 3.0.25
-google play store 3.10.14
-maps 6.14.3
-quickpic 2.9
-rdio 2.5 (never sync to card)
-reddit is fun golden platinum 2.7.5
-redditTV 1.1
-root explorer 2.21.1 (rom isn't rooted this test)
-street view 1.8.1.2
-tubemate 1.05.47
-tunein radio pro 7.0
-weatherbug elite 2.9.21
-xiialive pro 3.0.1.1
-youtube 4.3.9
Before I started running xiia, it was rebooting too. I suspect reddit, rdio, or tunein because they've had updates then the phone started acting up. Expense manager pro has also had some updates recently. Any thoughts or suggestions or alternatives are welcome. I am running full stock not rooted fl24 right now and have all rom and rooting related files off the phone in case I decide to take it in for a swap if the rebooting gets on my nerves too much. There were a lot of other programs previously installed that aren't on the install on this rom so they are eliminated out of the equation. I will update with new info as applies.
Edit 1: I have most of the bloatware disabled using the built in application manager. If someone deems it necessary for me to list all disabled programs, I can do so. To hell with it, I will list them so I can be more thourough.

I finally caught a reboot with catlog running. Can someone decipher this? I will show this to the techs if it helps my case.
UPDATE 2
A second logcat dump was captured this afternoon and is included.
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
Just install terminal emulator and next time you get a reboot dump a log and look st the last 5 pages it'll show you which app or process caused the reboot.
Edit: and don't disable talk its tied to the google services framework and can cause issues with playstore and reboots from fatal errors in the frameworks
I like to break stuff!
Okay, enabled talk, even though when it was disabled in the past I wasn't getting reboots. Got terminal emulator also. What is the command for the log dump and what would I be looking for?
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
type su hit enter then type logcat -d -f /sdcard/log.txt
You'll be looking for any errors or fatal errors, app stopped working etc.
Talk is temperamental sometimes it doesn't cause problems and others it does. Its the one google app that is actually tied back into the framework so it not being there leaves a hole for issues to fill up. Usually it just causes issues with playstore but I've had it cause reboots before when it would get into a FC loop on boot and then cause a reboot after about the 1000 time it FC

You'll be looking for any errors or fatal errors, app stopped working etc.
Talk is temperamental sometimes it doesn't cause problems and others it does. Its the one google app that is actually tied back into the framework so it not being there leaves a hole for issues to fill up. One thing I just noticed. If I'm running a stock unrooted rom, I won't be able to su. Say after the phone boots back up, how do I get at the log that would tell me the errors? I downloaded a logcat app and just watched things scroll by. I'm trying to wrap my head around this command and usage is why I'm asking. If I generate a log, how far back will the dump go or did that have to do with the switches/options for the logcat? Were they telling the os to create a log dump of errors or back in time a certain amount? I should google it but my ADD (self diagnosed and ex gf thought so) has my attention span at that of a gnat about now. LOL. Maybe a beer would help?! /me going to raid the refrigerator...
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
Today different things have happened. FL24 was behaving itself so I flashed GB08. After the install, which was one click rooted, everything settled down but the play store wasn't wanting to download anything for a few minutes. The only program I got downloaded was adfree. The annoying sprint id kept trying to force itself upon me and I kept telling it no. Wifi was on but not connected and sprint connection optimizer was disabled. No stock programs were disabled in the applications manager. Strange thing I noticed was after the flash with the one click full root, the internal memory wasn't erased. There were remaining folders from FL24 still there. Maybe the person who made the one clicks forgot to enable that. I am certain the oc was not a nodata. Anyways, I formatted the internal storage through settings and did a full factory reset. After I installed only one app, adfree, a few minutes after the phone rebooted. Sorry for the explanation being slightly out of order. I am typing this on the phone and am not going to fix it at the moment cause the battery is going to die very soon. I installed logcat and have it recording and dumping files onto the internal memory and filtered for errors. That way I can look at the log easier after a reboot. Before when it rebooted, I was not rooted and didn't have terminal emulator installed yet so I didn't know if I could catch the log even minutes after a reboot and installing te. That is what has happened so far. I am thinking a hardware issue might have developed to cause it. Will have to wait and see after the nwxt reboot since I am prepared now.
Here's a couple of logs with only errors filter enabled. I've had a reboot but not with any of these logs. I'm thinking that it might happen if the brightness is set to auto. Lots of errors with the same thing. Zipped file is 1.1mb.
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
When you flashed GB08 from EL29, did you flash the One Click Restore? Or was it the No Data?

Never nodatas. Flashing with cwm or Odin or mobile Odin or one click hasn't made any difference with reboots. Before, it was rebooting often but past few days it has settled down. Past few times I've been flashing the restore tar through Odin so it's nice and thorough. Haven't run root in awhile. Root can't be making it more unstable, can it?
Seeing lots of errors in the logs regarding lights, I turned off auto brightness to see if that stops reboots. I'm not completely sure yet but I think it might be helping.
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
Try flashing back to a EL29 restore then flash back to your current setup. Anytime I have trouble that's what I do and it seems to work well.

Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
Is there something that EL29 has that seems to put everything in its proper place? I am getting the original unrooted tar of EL29 now and thought about letting it update itself and see what happens.
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
I'm just going to guess that by restoring back to EL29 works because it wipes everything clean and sets the partition table how it needs to be for EL29 that you get a good clean flash with no leftovers.
Be sure to make a backup of your internal SD because after being on JB and the partition table being changed, you might lose your data. Then after flashing EL29. Boot up once, get a GPS lock, then flash whatever ROM you want. If JB then Odin a JB build and then flash the custom JB ROM.
If you want an AOSP ROM, flash an ICS tar then boot up once. flash a safe kernel like EL26 and flash the AOSP ROM.

Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
I flashed the original full tar of EL29 no root then went through stock recovery and updated all the way to FL24. It rebooted on me tonight again. Wifi, not connected, and Bluetooth were on. Bluetooth was connected. It happened when music was streaming over 3g, screen was off and I had two incoming texts. Went to unlock it by swiping the text circle, small hesitation then reboot. All the roms I've ran recently it's happening so I think it's a hardware issue that has just started since maybe late January. I don't know if I will take it back for a refurb or not. I'm not going to pay a deductible when I'm getting the s4 in about three months. I cannot make it happen either. It's completely random. If I brought it in and they tested it, it would most likely not happen. Don't know what to do or try now.
I'm at a computer now so I can type this out easier now. To wrap things up, it has happened on custom roms gb ics & jb. It has happened on stock roms rooted and not rooted gb ics and jb. It has happened with oem batteries and aftermarket. On old batteries and not worn out batteries. The batteries I have now don't spin. The phone does it loaded up with programs and completely stock installs. On old installs or nandroid or new. It has happened with pc odin with tars and mobile odin. It has happened with zip installs from cwm. Both stock and custom recoveries and stock and custom kernels. I can't think of much else more to try. It has to be something, I'm suspecting a radio issue. It could be something else. I don't know how I could take it in and get it swapped without paying a deductible. I've had insurance for years and the last phone I took to the repair center was an evo 4g. That tells you how long ago that was. At least two or more years ago because I also had an epic 4g at the time too.
I have played dumb in the past but I don't know if I should tell them about all the things I've tried when seeing if it was a rom issue or not. I don't want to purposely brick it to get it changed out either but that would certainly show them at the store something is wrong with the phone.
Re: Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
Hmm... It must be a hardware issue like you're saying. Leave stock unrooted FL24 on there and see what Sprint has to say about the issue.

Bump so it's noticed
Re: (UPDATE: CAPTURED LOG) Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
One last suggestion, don't know if you tried this or not.
What I have done is to do a stock install and leave phone alone with stock apps for like 24hrs, not installing any additional apps during this 24hr period and just using phone normally, stone stock so you can see if condition continues.
If issue stops then I will do a app by app install, giving some time inbetween app installs to see if issue reappears.

Re: (UPDATE: CAPTURED LOG) Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
I didn't make it a couple of hours with all original apps before a reboot happened once. It doesn't happen everyday, but enough to be annoying.
Re: (UPDATE: CAPTURED LOG) Help with process of elimination with random rebooting.
Rebooted again this afternoon. I will post the log of it when I get home later tonight.
A second log from this afternoon was uploaded in the original post.

Noticable Lag after OF5 Update

Has anyone else had severe lag after doing the OF5 update? I prepped my phone correctly. I booted into recovery, did a factory reset and even wiped internal. Then flashed OF5 through Odin, then did another factory reset and wipe and flash OF5 again through Odin. All was well for about a week, then all of the sudden starting yesterday my phone is just starting to lag badly. Typing, swiping, texting typing is the worst. Any ideas?

Ram Leak buld.prop fix?
Settings>Accounts Too many programs 'syncing' in the bg(paused apps in the bg, even when paused, will still suck CPU if syncing to certain sources)
ro.secure.storage fix?
Freezing Connections Optimizer
Uncheck Always allow Scanning and uncheck always notify when open networks are detected(WiFi)?
could be a number of culprits.
Yeah its laggy and kills the battery quick.

It was intended for the Ram leak on the s6 but many on the note 4 have had improvements in recent apps opening quicker and overall lag. It varies with the user and model though. It works(again, user installed apps and social media apps constantly syncing to keep the most up-to-date notifications may hinder such efforts) and wont bootloop the N910P model.
The usual ro.securestorage.support=true changed to =false
(Near the bottom, meant for fixes with Shealth originally when xposed was installed, but ya never know)
@SupraFast
Also.. i forgot where i saw this, but freezing the talkback app helped a lot of users with lag. Odd i know, but many users reported it helped out as well.
I cant find the first part but i did the ro.securestorage.support part
Unfortunately I tried freezing the talkback and secure log Agent apps; still no results

i still have the OE1 update.zip from going to OB7 for a few ppl to pull the modem.bin to test it out when the OE1 crap originally began.
If there was a way, someone who knew what they were doing could possibly make something of it? but im not sure.
The only way I'd recommend going back to OE1 is using your own nandroid. Don't have one? Try factory reset on OF5. Or backup your keepsakes, wipe everything and power down, Odin or KIES the OF5 stock tar. Same method for nandroid restore; just don't wipe your backups without storing them. Lots of wipes.
There shouldn't be lag on OF5; the only change was the reactivation lock, AFAIK.
The GS5 RAM #DHA/Property fix requires all the published lines to be added because it's not native to lollipop on the Note 4. I tried it OB7 and didn't seem to be a good fit on Odexed OB7. Got similar results with L Speed Mod. To be fair to my old Odexed ROM, it was getting long in the tooth and I had crashed a few apps having issues with my PC's USB hardware not disconnecting; should've tried my own advice above before saying it didn't work so well (There was a process32 modification in /system/bin that I wasn't sure where ava when it originated from). Just swapped some borrowed deodexed OB7 files and clean installed the flash with L Speed Mod and ROM may actually be OK now but I haven't delved into settings; they're still on default with stock kernel.

The weird thing is I did backup everything, then wiped everything including internal. Then after I flash OF5 it runs fine for a few days, then the lag returns. I am on CM12.1 and I am lag free.
