Thinking of getting airwave.. Can it allow me 4g? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Ok just moved into a new apt that has poor 3g signal with 2 bars and was suggested by sprint to get the airwave with my high speed Internet.. Well I was wondering I'm like a mile maybe 2 away from 4g, will it boost me into 4g coverage or just give me good signal within the home??

Doesn't help with 4g, but reception is way better.

The Airave doesn't boost signal, it's a femtocell, which is essentially a mini cell tower. It's 3G only and doesn't broadcast a 4G signal of any kind.

What datajosh said... And with wifi your data travels over that very fast.My two cents: I am so glad I have an Airave. I live in a fairly wooded area and both 3g and 4g (which I can get in town by the way) don't work well at all - for any carrier. I've had sprint up here for about 5 years and was looking at Verizon and ATT but neither could even get the anemic reception on 3g/1g I was getting on Sprint. Got an Airave and my signal is freaking great! I can walk out of my place to my garage about 50yds and still be on my unit. My sister got one because she too was was having issues down in SoCal (and the family has FIVE phones!). Now they can all get super reception. I set up my unit (and my sisters too) to be 'off' my network in a DMZ. Configured my router to allot an IP as DMZ and let the Airave use it as the 'public' IP. That way that traffic doesn't 'mix' with my local net and wifi. Lastly I just went to Amazon and baught mine for like $50.00 U.S. My sister made calls for about a week and finally spoke to the right person(s) and got one free!

I just got the Airave and the only thing I can see improved on is the reception of my calls (I get 5 bars instead of 2)
4g is the same
and 3g is still slow as heck..
also it has a build in GPS.. to tell you where you are..
It has about a 300 foot radius so if you go past that point you most likely will jump to another tower.
and when making and getting calls you get 3 beeps letting you know you are on the Airave. also dialing *99 will give you a message to let you know you are on the service.

If I am not mistaken the air rave is for call quality. 4g is purely data. Why wouldn't you just use wifi?I would think 4g would be slower than wifi anyhow. Feel free to call BS on this.

it only help with cell service.
you just get the air wave. ( they should offer it for free..)
and get on wifi network.

Have one myself. Great for calls and SMS/MMS but the data speeds are maybe half the speed of my DSL. I just use wifi for anything but calls, makes sense to me. Sprint had recently changed something with their towers out here and we were left with absolutely no service on my property. Sprints corporate numbers, including the CEO's, are not hard to find. I called and tore them a new one, I wasn't letting them get off easy with this one, being a sprint customer for yeeeaaarrrss. Long story short I got a free air rave for life out of it which I think was fair of them to do.
Just a note, if you have low bandwidth and you make calls while downloading stuff or just eating the bandwidth in general, you will have stupid delays in you conversations. Its just awkward.

Well maybe their speeds vary, but the whole point is if you have an air rave you most likely have wifi so why not just use that for data? The air rave is completely dependant on the broadband connection, its not like a range extender for sprint tower signal. I'm sure the phones modem has a lot to do with it as well.

YES & No!
If you have poor/fair service in your home, then just search xda forums for info on how to get it, or just PM me and I'll give you the info. I have very poor service in my home with sprint, that I just moved to. I and my family would all have to walk outside in the yard, to get a signal that was less likely to drop in the middle of the call. Even then, we only got 1-2 bars at most. In my house, we either didn't get a signal at all or it would drop out if we moved around.
I called the Sprint Retention line, and explained to them my issues with the service in my new home. I told her that I had searched the Sprint coverage map, and my area was listed with "Fair" service. She had me hold for just a few seconds to look up my address on their coverage map as well. Then she came back and explained the Airwave to me. I had never mentioned an airwave to this point.
She said that she had to check my area's coverage before offering it, because they've received a ton of request from people lately for this device, and many of them were in "excellent" coverage areas, and were simply calling because they heard they could get it for free. Just to have it I guess. Anyways, if you are in a poor-fair coverage area, and have real issues with coverage/dropped calls. Yes, they will send one for free and then not charge a dime. You just have to agree that it's their property and is to be returned at end of contract/service-termination.

I have one in my home as well. Works great. it doesnt support 4g but any sprint device will work with it. I get about 2-3 megs down with it running 3g.

I have a airave but get nowhere near the range some of you claim. Is there a way to boost it's range? I'm lucky to get 50 feet. Sorry if this is a hijack.

Actually, my Airave sucks. Somebody else in my building has one that is locked to their phone number, and my ET4G always get confused and connects to that one. It basically keeps me from making any phone calls in my house. I have to go all the way into the street to call.
So, please be kind and don't lock down your airave to your account.
Also, even when it does work, I still get **** data speeds.

Questions about an airave with the evo

Okay, during the past few months sprints network has been downhill in my home, seriously I get full bars of 3g during the day and at night I get full bars of no service and network is busy errors.
this is pissing me off, I was in the middle of an important call with a client and I got booted off the network.
tried all 5 of my evos and nada, signed up for skype quickly and I managed save my job.
This has happened a ton of times and my kids are always telling me about it, every time I call cs I am told its an outage and It will be fixed. But I am living in the most populated area of Puerto Rico, where every carrier has great service except sprint. heck tmo's EDGE network kicks the crap out of sprints 3g.
I could understand if I were in a rural area but damn I'm like surrounded by 3 sprint stores.
Anyways back on topic, would you guys recommend the sprint airave?I'm about to have call cs and ***** until I get this resolved.
My home internet speeds are 3.5mbdown/512kbps up.

I've never heard of a "network is busy error" before related to 3g.
3.5 mb down and you're complaining?
Um....
There's no "3g" on ANY network that gets that high.
It sounds like it's just an outage. How long have these errors been happening?
I meant my homes dsl speed for the airave(sprints been doing 100kbps for ages while on 3g), and the network busy error appears when I try to place a call.
this started around 2 months ago, once every two weeks, now its annoying as hell, when I was going to have my dsl installed the tech almost left because he couldn't reach me (sprint outage).
I just sent a text and got an error. SMS Error Radio Interface Resource Shortage Cause Code:64 Error Class:2

An Airave could solve the issues in your home since the Airave uses voip to make phone calls.
Do you know anyone else with Sprint, do they have the same issues?
My son is at college on the west coast of the island and hes fine been fine, he complains about it when hes home visiting us.
I'm calling cs tomorrow to see if I can get them to give me a free airave since thats what I've been reading on forums.
People with signal issues receive a free airave and have the monthly charges waived.

this really blows, the funny thing is that their 4g is working... I can have data only but the signal reaches my home only in my bedroom with 1 bar.
I have 2 more calls to make and I'm not risking it with sprint, skype has been working great so far.
Does the airave give the phones in my home 3g data or is it voice and text only?

The airrave works great. I did notice an issue with Juicedefender though; it would not connect to the airrave even when forcing it to by dialing *99. Once I disabled juicedefender, it works great and much longer battery life for my device, assuming courtesy the airrave.
going to call tomorrow about it, from what I understand its some white samsung branded box right? I think I saw one at my local sprint store the last time I went there.
The new one I got about a week ago is made by Airvana or something. It is an unbranded white box (and kinda large sadly). It works just fine for both 3G and 1X (data/voice).
anyway, it was free when I complained about things getting worse. People on slickdeals saying you have to pay tax on it, about $1. I haven't had mine long enough to know.
I want this asap, I just finished my last two calls via skype and pulled the evo out of my pocket and the service is back....its 12am here now lol.
I get around 600kbs to 1.3m d/l on 3g and I ant complaining about that. But I would understand bad signal then you should reconsider getting the air wave thing.

Airave works great

Out of curiosity, who here has an airave? My mother got hers yesterday for free for being a loyal customer for 11 years and also because of her horrible coverage in her home. I actually called customer service to see if she was eligible and she was. She used to get 1 to 2 signal bars on her epic 4g touch and now she gets full bars. Her 3g speeds went up 1.5 mbps from .3mbps. She's pretty happy with her airave . I also find out that they are planning to build a sprint tower about 20 minutes away off the highway from where she lives. No reason to leave sprint anyone time soon . Hell if the Tmobile and AT&T merger happens and I hope it doesn't, I'm heading to Sprint.
I don't know about Sprints version but we've used an At&t microcell for over a year with little to no issues. Had to pay $150 for the damn thing but it's been great. They should work similarly.

Have had ours for some time now. Had a couple issues with it, but was always resolved within a timely manner. Without out ours here in the home, we'd see 1 bar if that. Got ours free from the problems that we've had signal wise.
Got an airave v2 from sprint for free since my basement drops calls, works great throughout the entire house, sometimes it doesn't switch properly to the sprint tower when I get out of range outside and drops though, but that's a rarity

I have a new version Airave in my home (got it for free from Sprint cuz of poor signal quality indoors), and it works very well.
That's great that some have it especially for free. One question, does anyone have the GPS blinking green. When I first set it up it stopped blinking green and noticed now that it's blinking. I don't have the airave near a window nor elevated because of how her computer is set up and located. Should I bother connecting the external GPS or just not worry about it. My mother won't use her GPS whatsoever. Thanks.
Gps has to get a signal before airave will recieve data. As well as in highest level of support every call was airave. They work for a while and stop. We had an airave dept, but the calls were in the 100's every hr. We had to take all the overflow airave calls. Hate those things!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I used mine without the extra gps ant. For a few months with mixed results. After a while I noticed the gps light flashed often, so I hooked up the external Gps reciever. Night and day diffrence. The airave never skips a beat, and signal is 100 fold better.

It needs to be close to a window or attach the GPS antenna to a window. Also first time plug in could take hours to go solid lights.

Just spoke to Sprint rep about service outage.

So for the past two days I was not able to send or receive phone calls or text on my phone in the Brooklyn NY area. I thought maybe it was something to do with the rom I flashed or that sprint was just having outages. The funny thing is 3 and 4G worked perfectly fine. So this morning tried to call my wife on the using the cell phone and she couldnt receive calls.
So I called sprint this afternoon and they said that there was a problem with a few towers in Brooklyn where the 3g signal was interfering with the singel cell calling.
Supposedly this is suppose to be fixed by 12/21/2011 20:00 est.
Edit:
The rep wanted to do some basic trouble shooting on the phone via the network, so I am wondering would my phone being rooted and romed cause a problem with said troubleshooting.
Edit 2:
I posted this here because at first I thought that it was caused by the rom I recently flashed and I am just giving a heads up to people who may think the same.

I've been having issues in my part of Brooklyn for months now. Same thing, 3G works fine but texts and calls fail.
Chiming in well i live in brooklyn and i nor my wife have not had any call issues in my area at all.
We are both spilling having the issue. No voice or text via sprint or Google voice. I was told the tower issue in new york was suppose to be fixed last night. But we are still having the problem.
It's funny because the phone works everywhere else except in front or around or in our house. If I go five blocks away from my house the phone works fine.

I called sprint and told them i had no service and no data in most of my city.. " what is it, that youre using?" i said "a cell phone..." he said exactly, its used to make calls not to surf the internet
whats funnier yet is that he was about 25 years old..
I'm in a different state and its happening to this area too. In store rep said they are aware of it and they are working on the problem. She said things should be fixed tomorrow friday, at least for my area. Some texts are falling into the black hole and some have come through hours later. Internet works. Texts ride on the phone line and not the data line. Even on wifi texts would fail. Phone calls worked sometimes. Some towers were not affected and some are. The one for my house is intermittent.
If your connected to wifi it only cover data and wont actually place a voice call through wifi right? Just data like picz and internet correct?
I believe so. I think email and internet works on wifi but not calls or text. I thought google voice ran on the internet side but I did see some failures with that too so I don't know,
I don't use a cell phone.
I use a Data Pad or PDA that happens to also have a cellular radio and it can if I want make calls but that is a secondary function.
and thats what I would have told him.
I would have said. you see the unlimited data? see the 500 minutes. Take a guess which I use more hehe
It's strange there seems to be a 5 block radius in my neighborhood where you can make or get calls or text with sprint since Tuesday. The funny thing is it is with all sprint phones and they say they are not aware of an issue. Their are 4 sprint phones in the 3 family building that live in and would have to be at least a 100 or more in the neighborhood. It's seems to only affect he phone during the day because late at night and early in the morning the phones are fine.
Bay Ridge resident here. For about a year now, data fluctuates anywhere between 100 kbps to 1.5 Mbps, but usually in the 200 kbps area. Been complaining for what feels like forever (issue has been there since last January). I've gotten a million and one excuses, taken it all the way up to the office of Dan Hesse (I **** you not). They credited me one month's bill and that was about it. This was a long time ago. I love the fact that Sprint has unlimited data and is cheap, but that's about it. Service itself sucks.

Sprint Airave tech finally confirms an issue between S3 LG2 modem and Airave!

I have been talking to Sprint everyday since LG2 was released. Nothing but problems staying connected to Airave. Sometimes I loose 3g for hours, sometimes it drops to 1x, and sometimes voice and data are lost. So, I'm back on LF9 modem as it seems to be the best modem right now. They have done every test on Airave possible, communication between them and Airave is perfect. My brother has HTC EVO LTE and when he comes over, he has none of these issues on Airave. Pretty much narrows it down to the S3 modem itself or modem firmware.

My GS3 will only connect to my Airave for data, not voice. Power cycled both the Airave and the phone multiple times and nothing I do can get the thing to use the Airave for voice. I can still call out and receive calls, but i'm connected to a native Sprint tower. I don't get the usual tone you hear when you're connected to an Airave, the mobile light doesn't blink, and there's zero bandwidth usage on my router when calling. I can verify through my router that it is definitely connected to the Airave for 3G data though as I can almost peg my slow-ass 1.5 mbps DSL.
My Airave connects fine, but is as bad as it's ever really been. Only get about one or two walls worth of penetration with the stupid thing, it's pretty worthless in larger homes. In 2 bedrooms, the back yard, garage, and office the Airave just causes dropped calls. What I could use is a "Roaming Only" button, as there is very strong Verizon service in the area (those handful of times the phone goes to roaming are very good times).
This happens with the OG Epic, E4GT, GS3, iPhone 4S, and an old blackberry. If only they allowed us to up the xmit power on the things or install better antenna's.
I had LG2 and my airave was working okay. I have lg8 now and it seem to be working the same.
Sprint is sending me the new 2.5 airave device to replace my 2.0 one should have it shortly. Hopefully the new software in the 2.5 will work better. Been having your same issue since I got the device on lf9

Can you physically tell a difference on the 2.5 from the 2.0. I recently got a new airave and was wondering which one I got.

Seems like most people have had a decent experience with the Airave? I just ordered one off of ebay. Hoping to get more than 1 freaking bar in my apartment. I drop calls all the time and I have to go outside or stand near a window to get more than one bar. Hoping this will get me a couple more bars. Only spent 37$ for it...so it's not a huge loss if it doesn't work as advertised. I tried to get one free from sprint but alas, they however did say they would pay the 5$ or whatever it is per month so hopefully they'll still do (been a few mths) that when I call them up and tell them I have an Airave.
Yes the 2.5 is smaller and will have airave 2.5 on it. But now I'm running into an issue to where the GPS is saying I am in Austin when I am 20 minutes from downtown Dallas. Call quality has increased but data drop still to 1xrtt however it does pick back up evdo rev a quicker.

I dont understand why people care if it has 1xrtt or evo rev a, or whatever!!
just turn on the darn wifi and who cares!
I don't pay sprint for data usage and pay Verizon fios for data for nothing. Plus I game don't need excessive bandwidth sucking my latency. Plus the arrive only uses a small amount of bandwidth to convert ur isp signal to evdo rev a

that still doesn't explain why one can't just turn on the wifi? you are saying too much bandwidth speed is not good?
Pc gaming not on the phone lol

ah ok.....i get it..you want to save bandwidth for your PC...lol..sorry..my bad
that makes sense...but when people try to use 3g data and complain from an airave, it's a moot point because most phones have wifi now
Yep add tends to stop me from typing in details lmao

Sprint sent me an Airave due to poor signal at work. I use WiFi for data while I'm at work so that has never been an issue. I installed it in my server room (one wall between my office and the Airave) and I get full bars. I walk to my company's neighbor which is connected to our buisness and it drops to two bars (three wall and about 40' destance). The signal does drop but its still usable. Over all I am very happy with the product.
Does anyone have any specs on the differences between the 2.0 and 2.5?
Personally I hope they fix the issue of it needing to be in FRONT of your router (right off the modem). Or at least make it so the airraves internal router boots up first before it tries to connect to the sprint service.
Should my device lose power I always lose internet for about 15-20 min while the stupid device boots up and connects... Thankfullyl i'm on a battery backup, but it can be annoying.

Switch to TMo?

Hello all,
I am thinking of leaving Sprint and going Tmo. I don't have the greatest service in my house and currently have a Airwave. I checked Sensorly and it looks like Tmo may not be strong around my house also. I understand Tmo has wifi calling. I was wondering of I could get input on how it is working? Any issues with it?
Also how is your cell service? I'm located in Los Angeles (So Bay).
Thank you

I just did the leap two days ago.
I'm in Pasadena, and work in Santa Monica... Let me tell you. It's the best decision I've ever made.
Sprint is horrible, with constant slow data speeds, and disconnects.
I now get 4g LTE everywhere I go, including my daily commute on the 10fwy.
Do it. This phone is awesome and you deserve the 4G speeds
Edit- I was a sprint loyal customer for 10years
I switched from at&t a couple months ago and am glad I did. I get a more consistent signal in my house (near downtown Cincinnati) and wifi calling works really well. .. Just make sure you have a strong even signal in your house, because the call will drop if you walk into an area with weak coverage. The only thing I'm disappointed with is the lack of lte in this market. Everyone wise has it but us an from what I've read, it could be because another local provider blocking deployment. .. Not sure if it will be a deal breaker yet, although Verizon and att are too expensive to go to. .

The Walmart exclusive T-Mobile no contract plan is the best. $30 per month 5gigs high speed data then throttled after 5gigs. Unlimited text but only 100mins. I use google voice anyway paired with a VoIP then you have free calling. I just keep my out on swappa for a good used gsm phone. I am forever done with contracts.
Do it! I just left sprint a month ago for the note 3 and I couldn't be happier.

I'm back in the UK and Wi - Fi calling to the state's have been flawless. Free texts and 3G Web which is still manageable for Emails and browsing. But back to the subject: Wi - fi calling works great.

The WiFi calling on the Note3 is a little buggy atm; there's already been OTA updates for the other carriers that fix it. I've disabled it both because it's buggy on my high-strength WiFi (echos, drops, CallerID;61 bug, etc), and because I don't really need it in NYC as T-Mobile is everywhere (except deep inside buildings and in basements)
I switched from AT&T (~$75/mo inc taxes&fees) to T-Mobile's prepaid ($30/mo) in June, and now get way more service for less money. All I really lost, which I don't miss much, is roaming, call forwarding (for GoogleVoice VM), and more voice minutes than I could use.
T-Mobile's making all the right moves with their UnCarrier initiative and gaining subscribers fast. Hope they don't end up bogging their network down like Sprint did.
Switch and don't look back, sprint is crap.

I switched months ago from Sprint and never looked back, Sprint is total crap. Phoenix is still without LTE from Sprint, but Tmo has pretty good coverage. At my house I actually get faster LTE than I do cable Internet!

Like everyone here, Pull the trigger.
I was on sprint using an iphone (yaya, whatever) for the price we paid or well ANYONE pays... its not worth it. Even after EIP on phones with TMOBILE, the global data just makes it sweeter. This is honestly a must-have if your frequent traveler. Sprint gave me the run around for three months with "promises" and tried to keep me over sprint spark, yeah sure softbank has deep pockets, maybe softbank WILL turn sprint around properly...
But its all about the now, not the waiting game. You wont have the data connection issues on TMO like sprint, Global data/text was a huge asset overseas when I went to see family vs. when I was in verizon even few years back (They murder you with data fees on blackberry overseas) then the next trip I took I suffered without data (due to LTE bieng new and HTC Thunderbolt bieng...well CDMA/LTE Only).. *cough* Sprints same way. But this time around I was superduper happy.
My boyfriend in IL uses TMO as his internet REPLACEMENT! and we have never had issues with lag during P2P oldies like AOE2, SC, to newer titles like SC2 or even PS3 games or skyping AND gaming...etc. So I am overall impressed. Very low ping compared to big red even, color me impressed.
Unless your in a magical sprint spark city, with a tri-band device (which you dont) and dont care for coverage outside of that tiny area (This is to ANYONE with sprint) come over to team magenta. Team banana needs to think things through better for the future. Itll average $15~ difference at most for 40x the service.
Sometimes I think sprints techs are idiots, where I work we see around 10,000 guests at a single park alone. Sprint has a single short range tower serving two themeparks Which on a good day will go over 20K, Lets say 14K Average. This tower was the LAST tower to recieve LTE rollouts in the city, and this tower is ALWAYS so overloaded nobodys sprint devices work in the area 99% of time. Infact itll flipflop so much your battery will be gone within 4 hours of being in its service radius. Everytime I call its "no issues reported, youll get a call from a tech within 72hrs". 3 complaints, 2 months later? oh yeah no calls!
I explained ^ to the technician I did somehow manage to run down when they were doing tower maint since I can access the backlot, he knew it too but said he could only keep bringing issue up. There are no extenders owned by sprint within the parks. Verizon, TMO, AT&T All have short range towers & extenders WITHIN park grounds to deal with the loads of people hitting the towers.
Looking at TMOs tower on the grounds, it houses nearly same amount of equipment as the big players. Sprints using a low cap tower in a high cap zone nearly everywhere i go & has "good enough to be passable equipment".
Hell even AT&T where I live...theres a tower so huge its like a mini eiffel tower with blinking lights for planes & all for a low-density area but it covers some major ground with some pretty insane LTE speeds. Very nifty retro fitting.
sprints like... MORE TOWERS WITH BAD RANGE!!! GOGOGOGO!
Do it!
