Does 5GHz on the Galaxy Nexus Work for You (Poll)? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

No need to reply to this—just looking for a good poll for 5GHz operation on this phone. If you are using 5GHz successfully or have tried, but are unsuccessful, please vote.
UPDATE:
For what it’s worth, I decided to do some brief experimentation with a business-class stand-alone wireless access point and, while I didn’t spend too much time on this, it appears the Galaxy Nexus’s ability to do Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) is broken, non-existent or the device is simply coded (miscoded?) not to connect to UNII-2 5GHz channels (channels 52-140), which require the use of DFS. I was able to connect to this access point’s 5GHz radio using UNII-1, UNII-3 and the 5.8 ISM channels—so, for the most part, this covers channels 36-48 and 149-165. Hope this helps someone.
For more technical information on wireless channels, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels...
Cheers.
SECOND UPDATE:
So, while this worked great for months for me, I seem to be having the issue others have reported in that, all of a sudden, 5GHz has stopped working and I have been unable to get it to work again—and, to make matters worse, this issue has persisted even with Jelly Bean/4.1.1.
Shame.
THIRD UPDATE:
Problem still exists with 4.2.2 and I think the most relevant “official” report of the issue is at http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=22474.

Works fine here.
Linksys E2500, Channel 48.

It would be extremely terrible, luckily we are talking about WiFi GHz not CPU GHz.

works fine for me
netgear n900

Works for me! Netgear wnd3300.

It used to on 4.0.1. On 4.0.2 the 5ghz channel fades in and out and it will no longer connect to it. When it did work it was much faster and smoother than 2.4

Works perfect for me net gear n600

Once upon a time...
... it worked. But now it doesn't. The network shows up in the list but clicking on "Connect" literally does nothing.
However, I updated to 4.0.4 last Sunday, and maybe it works now. Will try it asap.

Same issue, it works at the begging bit not now.. It's shows my 5GHz network but i cannot connect.. I can connect only if i'm over the router just 10-20 cm. Also i've try to connect to other 5GHz network but i have the same issue.. Not depending on channel , I've try every channel 36,38, 40 and etc... I want to know is this hordware or software problem...?

Its software. There is a clear pattern here. It used to work but now it doesn't. All of these people didn't suddenly have their hardware crap out.

It worked for less than a week and then suddenly stopped working. Now I can see 5ghz networks but if I click on Connect, nothing happens.
I am using a Netgear WNDR3800. I tried to change channel, bandwidth, remove the password.. nothing.

If it works fine for 70% of the people but not for the other 30%, it might be some faulty hardware. Sometimes it happens.. Nikon is currently recalling a bunch of batteries which are defective and Apple did the same with iPod Nano and other products.
It may be a defective batch of GNexus.
I really hope that Samsung is going to address the problem soon.

Specifically regarding the 5ghz issue working and then not working on the same device, we are talking about 100% of the people that have reported that problem. That was what you replied to, not to people with general wifi problems.

Serious WIFI & 4G issues PLEASE HELP GIVE INSIGHT

I really need some user commentary here as I have tried vigorously looking into my connectivity 'flimsy-ness' lately.
I have a GNex LTE version
this is fast...when it is fast.
However, wifi drops at times. and 4g if the reception is lost and reverts to 3g...it never goes back to 4g even in zones where it obviously exists, needing to be corrected manually.
It is very nerve wrecking. such an expensive phone to have such issues.
My question is, does anyone else have this? (im on 4.0.3)
should i return this and ask for a replacement? maybe this is defected.
Please help out as time is running out for a replacement at verizon
THANK YOU AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
I got hit by the Verizon outages and outside of that, I had some cell data connectivity issues twice. However, I have not had them since the last outage. (Also after changing ROMs both which are 4.0.2)
My father was visiting and got hit by what you describe and fixed it with a power cycle and hasn't said it occurred since.
How often does it occur for you?
To be on the safe side and so you don't miss your window, you may want to exchange.
A lot. The wifi is absolutely terrible. It does not stick. And turning the phone off with having put on the always on thru advance wifi settings it still turns off. I can not and will not risk it. Talked to Verizon made them express mail another gnex. I'd rather take my time and compare then go to the store and chuck this and receive another. One this is for sure. If the other one has the same problem. I will be very very sad. I love this phone (plus I have the unlimited plan..switched with my gf...and MAN Is it nice going over 10gb already)
I hope no one else has this problem. Really curious to know.

Mine is solid. Holds wifi, holds 4G. The problem you are talking about has been brought up by others. Look around on this forum and you'll see it has talked about. People have had luck swapping out for another and others haven't. Looks like there are simply some out there with issues and you got one. They do not all have this issue. There is an OTA update coming with 4.0.3 soon that MAY help. You might just want to swap it out. If you do, don't leave the store until you know it's working.

Same thing happening with my wifi dropping connection all the. Gmail and whatsapp messages are always late, bloody frustrating:-[
Update: just received a new gnex. In the mail. Can confirm within the first three minutes of using it......same problem. Unbelievable

I have had the same router for the last 2 years, my nexus S never has had any sort of drops on wifi like this.
This is without a doubt a serious problem. I will be now doing more thorough testings with the 4g reception followed by the 4g dropping to 3g and seeing if it ever reverts.
I pray to god this is a software issue. but to be honest...having had all nexus's (nexii?) i have never had a reception issue or had an update that improved it...so im sort of freaking out now
I'm having this issue as well. It will help if you change the wifi policy to stay on always. Hit menu inside the wifi options.
I had the same issues and returned mine. I hope it gets fixed, because I loved everything else about the phone and want it back, but not at the expense of poor data reception.
on a NEW one that was sent...SAME PROBLEM.
ALREADY HAVE THE ALWAYS ON POLICY.
....this is some scary S*$T!!!!
I have had wifi issues with specific routers. I have 2 Linksys wrt 54g with latest firmware which frequently do not connect despite having a strong signal. I have a router in the micasavrde home automation controller that connects fine, all with wpa2 security. The wifi at work at 2 different sites works fine, but I am not sure what routers are being used. I think this is mainly a software issue with certain routers and may be fixable. Maybe we need a thread documenting people's experience with routers with no issues and routers that have problems .

Bluetooth tether dropping

I've seen this issue on various forums including this one, however I haven't seen a solution yet. From what I can tell its been a problem ever since release.
Tethering my tablet to my gnex (was a tf101, now I have an N7) works for a few mins then the phone will drop the connection...some people have suggested getting Bluetooth keep alive or auto connect but neither seems to help. WiFi tethering works but its much harder in the batt.
Has anyone been able to fix this??

My thinking is its hardware related and can't be fixed, that or Google needs to get out of the game cause this should have been fixed long ago. Not being able to tether the Nexus devices (GN to N7) is a massive fail.

Wifi Calling Hit or Miss?

Hey everyone, I have a question about T-Mobile Wifi Calling feature. When it works, it is really great but sometimes when I answer the phone either I can't hear them or the caller can't hear me but I can hear them. My Wifi signal is really good but why does this happen? It seems like a pretty common problem and when I searched for solution, there were many but none that really works 100%.
Is there any remedy for this issue?
Yea I have the same exact problem. It's really annoying.
I'm seeing the same issues myself. Hopefully the update with multi-window will address this. I remember my Wifi calling being much more reliable on my Galaxy S from 2 years ago.

Agreed. and wifi calling on my wife's Sensation works flawlessly all the time. Sad thing is I absolutely need it at home. no cell coverage at all.
my s3 and my n2 used to do that but I have the dual router and when I switched from G to N signal the issue was solved.

Am I suppose to set the router certain way to get this working 100%? I went to T Mobile store today and I only made fool out myself. When it was connected to store Wifi, I just couldn't recreate the issue but as soon as I get home it goes all wrong!

Have you logged into your tmo account online and set your 911 address? This seems to have made a huge improvement for my wife's phone but also somewhat on mine from the looks of it. Still not 100% but at least it works most of the time.

yeah, i had to put my address there first to get the Wifi-Calling feature going. Doesn't seem to be much of different on my part though
So many problems with Wifi-Calling feature...
- One way Audio (either caller can't hear me or I can't hear them)
- Text/MMS not coming in or out
- Phone Calls doesn't go through, phone doesn't even ring... when it does ring and I pick up, phone freezes at the answering screen!
WTF! so unreliable... what a mistake switching to T-Mobile was. AT&T was over charging the heck out of me but at least I had no service problems, I'm not sure if cheaper plan is worth going through this.

Try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769716

Was having the same problems on my N2. I've since switched to the N band, but I haven't re-enabled WiFi calling as I am a bit gunshy, especially since I am taking a lot of job calls at the moment.

Only real solution is to turn off the Wi-Fi calling feature for now. It's pretty much a hit or miss if it will work on a daily basis.

The problem is that this may be a Samsung phone problem, so nothing a tmobile tech can help you with currently. As others have mentioned, using older phones or other brand of smartphones seems to work with Wi-Fi calling. Most problems were reported from using a Samsung Galaxy s3/Galaxy note 2.

Gps very fast

Over the years ive owned and used several blackberrys iphones and androids and I have never had the gps work as well as it does on the note 2. I mean I get a lock within seconds even when im indoors which has never happened for me before
How would I go about determining what is different about my note 2 from my other phones so as to preserve the settings and apply them when I find it not working as well?

I have the telus i317m but man I am just floored with how fast it connects in the past ive had to restart th3 phones before even getting a gps lock which would still usually take another 10 mins.

I got a Rogers Note 2 and it connects very quickly as well. Correct me if im wrong but the galaxy line of phones i below actually have a real gps receiver built in that works with gps satellites where other phonea like iphones and blackberries use the wireless signal (data) to detect gps position.

I agree with the OP. GPS issues with the original Note was the single biggest reason I wanted to upgrade, but it also made me hesitant. GPS was terrible on the original Note (at least for me). I always had to end up downloading some third party app that was supposed to help the GPS lock quicker. It worked sometimes, but other times it didn't do much. *Knock on wood* seems like the GPS issues has been fixed on the Note II. I always get an almost instant connection. Very happy about that, as I use navigation a lot when I travel about.

That may be the case for some of the older phones but I know for a fact that the phones I had had a built in gps receiver. I suppose they just had software or hardware issues which prevented them from locking quickly? Trying to figure out exactly what it is now so I can hopefully keep it going for this note II and potentially help those who can't get a quick lock.

I attempted to use Google nav today and felt that there was a bit of lag between me turning and the app updating with the next instruction. It took a good 10 seconds for the final address to appear as I turned onto the last street near my destination. Perhaps it's a fault of the app and not GPS tracking.

I have not tried this yet, I plan to attempt this with an LTE WiFi hotspot (though I must be careful not to abuse this, or AT&T will ream me with the bill). I have noticed that it seems to become more and more unstable as time goes on, up to the point where rebooting the router is manditory to use WiFi. As I mentioned, the demo units in Best Buy also displayed this behavior. I do not have a way to significantly load up the hotspot, however, though I am starting to discount the possibility that load has something to do with it.
The biggest difficulty is Android's recent increase in "security" (The kind that keeps the device safe from us rather than the way it should be) makes any debugging impossible without rooting, blowing the e-Fuse and invalidating the warranty, which I do not want to do, since if I cannot resolve this issue I will not keep the tablet.
The fact that rebooting the router clears the issue for a while leads me to conclude it's a misbehaving router more than anything else.

Possible, however, as I mentioned, the demo units in Best Buy were similarly affected. I highly doubt that Best Buy uses the same cheap router I do for their in-store public WiFi access.
