As HD2 owner I am dissapointed.
Again!!
But its just a spokeperson.. so we can't track the source... wich makes it a rumor..
Who cares what someone says at microsoft......they keep saying "No No No" like Amy winehouse....... HD2 can support it with EASE.
The reason why they say "No" is that microsoft has promised manufactuers that NEW OS equals Great Sales.....extacly how they did with the VISTA series !!!
What ever I say to microsoft......they like it or not....WE WILL get WP7S on out HD2 phones.....I love XDA !
One of the main reasons I got the HD2 was that I thought it would be upgradeable... I'm still hoping that it'll happen, one way or another.
I'm passing on the HD2 just beacuse of this reason I got my TP2 and when the HD2 came out I said I would just wait to see what WM7 is going to look like before I upgrade. I'm glad I waited. Guess you guys should have done the same. No one nows if porting to the HD2 will be possible yet so I wouldn't get too excited.

Existing hardware on desktops is upgradeable and Microsoft even gave free updates for systems purchased within the months leading up to release.
It's funny how they still leave the door slightly open with their statement.
The first device that has WP7 on it (as long as it doesn't suck) I'll be buying. My Touch Pro is due for retirement.
if you have read the article you will clearly see that the Microsoft spokesperson said that they currently dont have plans to update the HD2...key word being currently. but WP7 wont be out until around christmas....so curruntly they may not have have an update, but by release time they might. sometimes u have to read in between the lines...its something they are deffinatley working on, because if they werent, they could just give a straight answer instead of beating around the bush.
as a owner of an hd2 I would he dissapointed but I am really positive about this for simple reasons. i may be wrong about this but still ill say my opinion .
as a lot of ppl have seen on YouTube there is a video of someone from Adobe with hd2 with flash 10.1 and a (new kind of IE) which according to me is available on wp7s (according to MS a renewed browser with pinch to zoom )
BTW the home button of hd2 can somehow be reprogramed as the search button.
ok on YouTube you see the start menu but you don't see him opening the browser.
as i said I may be wrong but its my opinion.

No, the key word is "don't".
Yeah when someone says they currently don't have any plans it means they aren't going to do it unless it has a major effect on their business if they don't.
really?
Then that means all the 6.X device can not update to windows phone 7 severies !
Hope some oone could tans 7 to 6.X.
I am waiting
If nothing could do to refresh i will think about android or other os.........

Not really... I'm really annoyed that I, (probably) won't be able to get the new OS on my new 'phone, but let's not forget that the HD2 is still one kick-ass mobile, and I am still seriously impressed with it.
The only thing that annoys me is the amount of people who, on seeing my phone for the first time, say "Ooh, is that an iPhone"

Really have no idea what you're talking about, mate.
what a fail...and right before tmo usa will launch their touch hd2...i wonder how this will impact sales. I know I won't switch fully to tmo because of this and unless there's a beta on xda developers very soon, I will not go to touch hd2. I will wait

I'm definitely waiting. I was thinking about upgrading to HD2 but I'll just stick with my Touch Pro2 til the holidays.
I've wanted the HD2 from the second I put my eyes on it. It's everything I wanted in a phone minus the slide out keyboard, but the screen size made me willing to bypass that. Then I saw Windows Phone 7 and realized I wanted it on my HD2. Not being able to have it on the HD2 is surely making me reevalutate my future purchase of the tmo HD2 which is released on 3/24.
I may not get the phone at all and I really find that to be a sad thing for myself, HTC, Microsoft and TMobile USA.
Not a huge disappointment. I love the HD2 the way it is. WM 6.5 with HTC Sense does a very nice job in everything I need and use the phone for.
What I don't need is a closed OS with a lot of eyecandy (well, one can argue about that) and xbox integration. Microsoft can state "everything what ppl care about directly at the homescreen" as often as they want. But what I actually care about is efficiency on how I can use the phone. And having big colored blocks on the screen for every possible program/contact/bookmark/pictures/appointment etc. is neither very efficient, nor very effective ...
So glad I didn't wait

Well... I should have waited for a good Android phone instead of the HD2.
I'm not at all interested in the dumb iPhone copycat OS that WP7S is. Good UI, but other than that, they've just copied Apple's bad bad policies (out of envy, I think).
I'm not going to adjust myself to an OS that doesn't multitask, doesn't let me install the stuff I want because of Marketplace censorship, doesn't let me manage my files on my own etc.
With Android, like WM6.5, I can have an OS that simply does what I want it to do. I don't have to adjust myself. That's how it should be.
Thus, the only regret I have is that I've not waited for a good Android phone, because WM6.5 is doomed and now nobody will develop anymore for it, whereas the quantity AND quality of the applications on Android has now surpassed Windows Mobile, and the OS itself is almost there.
I'm not sorry either... I change my phones every year - as flashy and useful and nice as they are, they don't last as long as $50 Nokia dumbphones did.
I use my HD2 very heavily and, apart from increased tear, this toy is much more important to me than a regular phone. As such, it absolutely needs to be the best toy around.
Also, the earlier I sell my phones, the more money I'll get.
I love it and enjoy using it for the most part, but by the end of the year I'm sure there will be devices available that I'll want more, and the love affair with HD2 will be pretty much a thing of the past.
Finally, even though I like what I see as regards to WP7, I'm not at all sure it will have the essential apps I need or that it will live up to the promise in its v.1 incarnation.
Android... I can't force myself to like either the OS or the phones carrying it. Yeah, they have multitasking and all, but I'm not buying a principle, I'm buying a phone.

So Android buyers buy a principle?! Nonsense... they buy Android phones. Simple as that.
And of course, they buy them because they prefer them to other phones.
And of course, Android's features are reasons to prefer Android phones to other phones - and multitasking, for example, is one of them.
I don't like Google, I don't like Java... but if Google's OS is the only one to suit my needs, then I buy a Google phone. Because I'm not buying a principle (i.e. not Google or not Java), I am buying a phone (i.e. the phone that does what I need it to do).
As Windows Phone 7 was launched today we wanted to put up a poll based on general perception of the device. If you could buy one today, money not being an issue, would you? We want to see whether Windows phone 7 has been received well by the community.
Cheers,
Steve & XDA News Staff
Wow first one to vote, maybe im just abit excited lol.
Omnia 7 is at the top of my list atm. GSMARENA has a good review of the device already (no idea how they got hold of it)
Im gonna hang on to my current device and by a WP7 phone when they start coming out with a second line of phones.
just bought my desire. WinMo 7 doesn't look too customizable, but only time will tell
Former long time windows mobile user, not impressed, Ill stick with my EVO for now.
Going to get a better Android phone I think... probably Samsung Epic 4G now or Evo (more than the WP7) ones now.
Once I see multiple calendar support, we'll talk. As for now: never.
Like a lot of people here, I have a HTC HD2 and am running WM6.5 and Android 2.2 on it. So, for me, I'll consider a WP7 device once my HD2 either dies (let's pray it never happens) or maybe in 6-12months when it's time for an upgrade.

Me too.... HD2 forever
Our beloved HD2s can run any OS so why switch to WP7 when the HD2 already runs it (Not public yet!)
The hardware in most (currently presented) WP7 devices is as good as our HD2's
So.. maybe I will buy one if the hardware is superior to the HD2's!!!

Looks great to me, especially the Dell Venue Pro.
Sure, why not. Every HTC phone that I have had was Windows. Why would I give up now? I have played with the HTC EVO running Android, and I do not like it. I prefer Windows. That is my own personal opinion and choice from experience, and somewhat from what I have spoken with other people who have Android phones from different manufactures, which I have personaly tried and played with for a while with each and every one of them.
I just prefer Windows over anything else.
maybe and unsure is about the same.
im hoping it can be ported to the hd2. that'll save me some money
for sure i will buy the WP7 phone HD7 i think... as i am HTC fan as well as WM.
Not at this time. I love the interface. I just don't like the rest of the story. The system just locks you in. Perhaps if could be jailbroken, that would change things.
Well I got the HTC Desire on Android 2.2 and thus far I don't see anything I prefer in the Win 7 phones that would make me switch. If anything it has less functionality at present with no cut & paste, no tethering and no SD card. I do like some of the features though but will wait and see how they develop this, so for now it's a no.
I think Microsoft has missed a trick with the launch of WP7, by basing the OS entirely for phone devices. As with Android it can be used not only on phones but tablets as well and judging by how the community response to the Sammy Tab is high with enthusiasm i think MS should have looked further forward than just Windows 'Phone' 7 and evolved further ahead with appying its new OS to tablets as well, even if not making it available now but atleast showing a mock up to show its potential of being more than just a phone OS.

What?!? no cut & paste and no sd cards? where can I read up on WP7 features?
Also long time and big time WinMo fan, but I got the EVO and after rooting it, nothing can come close. Win7 simply went the way of iPhone, by locking everything down, so even if it weren't for the rooted EVO being so damned awesome and far above every other phone out there, I wouldn't get a Win7 phone out of iPhone-hatin' spite.

OK I currently have a Samsung Fascinate, and im starting to get fed up with android and there horribly slow update time frame, and the bugs with this phone i wanna like it but for some reason i cant seem to.But i think what the problem is with android is that its so open and so many phone makers are making android phone these days and so fast its to much to kepp them all updated with the newest software version. And i have had a droid eris, droid incredible, a droid x, and now the samsung fascinate, and none of them seem to satisfy me. So my question to you guys is would it be worth switching from android to win7 when verizon gets some win 7 models this spring.

It all depends on what you want in a phone. I can only speak for myself about why I choose WP7 over the others, and that is because I prefer quality over quantity. For me, WP7 is the best mobile OS ever created. It has fine craftsmanship and superb quality written all over. It is a product that was labored over for a long time to make it the best it can be, regarding functionality, ease of operation, simplicity and quality of user experience. That is what I like. I'm attracted to effort from the heart. Like artwork, where the artist pours his/her self into what they create. WP7 is exactly that.
Do other systems currently have more features than WP7? Yes. But I was fully aware of the setup from the git-go. I knew a lot of features would be temporarily absent when I bought my HD7. But the good news is, there's an update scheduled for Jan that is *rumored* to be massive and provide so much more functionality that it will seem like WP8.
Compared to automobiles, WP7 is more akin to a Mercedes Benz or Lexus or Infiniti, whereas the other systems are more akin to ordinary cars. The world's leading software makers, who made Windows 7, which is the best and fastest selling PC OS in history and massively praised from every corner of the spectrum, have put together the world's best mobile OS in WP7.

The car analogy is a good one, I like android but it is like a fully loaded Ford (no disrespect) whereas WP7 is like a Ferrari, it oozes quality and design integrity, just doesn't have all the "toys" yet, but it will do.
just to add to that, i think if you give it a couple of months, play the wait and see game. there is a lot of hype around the first update, and althrough i have already jumped on the windows phone 7 bandwagon, i would suggest that if you're in no real rush, wait till the update comes out, and then compare windows phone to android, and ensure that it has all that you desire in a phone. and if it doesn't, are you willing to give up these things for what you may not have in android (e.g. uniformity, battery life [maybe?], and stability).

If, as you say, you'll be waiting until Spring, then you'll already have the first update, maybe even a second one, and the biggest missing features will be there, so I'd say, go for it.

If you haven't, I'd say go to an at&t or t-mobile store and try it out. I'm a 6.5 to 7 convert who's also used android and 7 is a blast to use. As it's been said, if this January update does come on time and does the fixes they're hyping, it might be the best OS out there.
In Poland WP7 is upcoming soon.....
I also have a Samsung Fascinate - with the help of the devs here on XDA it is a very usable phone running leaked Android 2.2 builds (and the official update appears to be finally coming out today or tomorrow).
That said, I would shell out a few bucks to Microsoft for a version of WP7 that could be installed on the Fascinate...
Wishful thinking, I realize... particularly being on a CDMA carrier - but I gotta wonder why there aren't devices being offered that can run a choice of OSes.
I suspect there are a number of GSM phones out there running Android on hardware that could support WP7 (and vis-versa). the economics and support hurdles of such an offering obviously make the ODMs and carriers shy away from this idea, but for the population of mobile device enthusiasts who hang out on forums like this, it would be a pretty cool selling point for a phone to be able to run WP7 or Android.
[EDIT] I just searched a bit and saw that XDA folks have done an Android-or-WP7 dual boot config on the HTC HD2... How's that working out?
ohhh, this is an interesting thread a few months later !

Yeah - perhaps I should've started a new thread for the dual-boot question - sort of changed the topic.
Hi there,
I am due an upgrade on my Orange contract. In one regard I'm tempted to wait a while to see what new phones are on the horizon - but whether or not I can resist grabbing a phone straight away is another matter.
I was among the first early adopters of android and I'm very pleased with the OS. If I was to stick with it it's quite likely I'd upgrade to the HTC DESIRE HD...
BUT!!! I have been looking at videos demonstrating windows phones and I have to say I've been impressed. I love the UI and everything seems exceptionally fluid - more so than android, which is what I'm on at the moment and up until now has been what I was intending on sticking with.
A few questions I suppose;
Is there multitasking on board?
I'm aware applications are in shorter supply than its competitors - that's not a huge issue to me as long as I have the essentials covered.
How is windows getting on sales wise? Seeing as it's still early I risk going for a platform which could be abandoned by app authors and left stranded and unsuported by websites / media outlets.
So what would you say is the latest and greatest windows 7 phone?
Cheers,
V
Multi-tasking is very limited for the time being. Announcements from microsoft say this will be included in the febuary update.
Windows has said they will back this OS regardless and I believe it. It's certainly doing better than windows mobile and I'm confident that it wont be abandoned.
The best WP7 phone is hard to say. with the OS I'd always go for the biggest screen of maybe a physical keyboard.
I would go for soldered memory (way faster ) like Samsung .
I have a hd7 and it is a real good phone but I would love to play with a Samsung .

just to supply correction...
multitasking is only capable at present for particular applications including zune (music/video), web (internet explorer), and a few of the other built in things already on the phone. there is no official word from MS as to if/when multitasking will be available, but there have been rumours (not from MS) that they have been working on some form of it, and it could be seen as early as the first update (but highly unlikely).
and now to your questions...
multitasking = covered above
essentials [apps] covered = well it's best if you tell us what your day to day use of your current Android phone is, and we can help in giving you the information available. At present though, the current APIs do limit the development and release of some of the more desired applications, but a lot have come on board, whether that be through MS doing the leg work, or the companies getting excited about it.
windows getting sales = well they (MS) are still "mum" on it (not saying), as it's still early days. i don't believe MS is out to sell as many as iPhone/Android straight out of the gate, but they have said that they're committed to getting this really going (windows mobile had 4 people employed for it's development, windows phone (it's current form) has over 400 people employed for it's development... you do the math). in terms of it being abandoned, i don't see it happening with their level of commitment. as more people get on board, it will encourage others (devs/companies) to as well.
latest/greatest phone = depends on where you live and what you're after. this is the just one of the best things about windows phone. there are several different flavours from the music/entertainment (surround/hd7), to the expandable memory [read up on this first before jumping into it] (focus), to the picture taker (mozart), to the general use (trophy/omnia 7/optimus 7). of course there are plenty more reasons for each model, but these are just examples of how you could see the phones. the experience is close to the same on each device, so you just need to find one that meets your day to day needs/desires.
hopefully this gives you a bit of insight.

The multi-tasking will most probably be included in the updates. there is no definitive list of what is going to be included in the first update besides copy and paste.
Thanks so much everyone - all very insightful replies.
I'd be clicking thank if I could!
My take, after getting the Trophy just for having a look at the OS is that it is indeed worth it. I've actually been on of the people moaning about the change of direction and claiming to desert and go to the Android camp. However, even though this is all very new and scary, I think I'm starting to like this new platform.
I will still install Android on my HD2, but my main phone will be the trophy (until I can get a good phone with SAMOLED )

I'm not so sure about an LTE WP7 device. The reason why HSPA+ is on the HD7 and Venue Pro is because the processor didnt support it. I believe this will also be the case for LTE.
If it is on LTE then I might be going back to verizon even though I said I'd never do that again

well perhaps with the Gen 2 Chassis it will have a processor that will support it, I hope at least.
EDIT: though I would be happy with a version of the focus with 16GB and 512MB RAM. (card slot too)
I see that there are no threads here or comparisons between these two or videos...
I know that they are completely different OSs but WP has always been bragging about smoothness of their OS.
From recent reviews of Galaxy Nexus running Jelly Bean, i see no reason to ever complain about lagging.
For those who're talking about instability of Android, that is a personal choice of installing ****ty apps and tweaking it in the ways it wasn't
supposed to be tweaked anyway (Android has matured enough from random/"no reason" crashes).
The main thing which I'm interested in is speed and fluidity.
Its dead here bro. No point in comparing something dead to the living.

Well it is wrong to compare as WP7 (dead) with JB. Wait for fall and than we can compare WP8 with Android. And I give 100% WP8 wins Android in all ways. Eco system between PC and WP8 or other devices will be best than Android or Apple. And believe me developers move from android to Microsoft. Because any app for WP8 works on PC as well or PC app works with WP8. Better gaming etc.

^ I fell for the exact same vaporware. Do some research and you'll see that is just not true.
Besides, people purchase real programs for the desktop, not apps. Simply because the full web is at your fingertips.

The customers mindset is not the same between desktop and mobile. The salespitch to devs is that EVERYONE will be buying apps like crazy..... But it didn't happen on wp7 yet, and w8 is not exactly turning people into sheeple like Apple has.
Also:
"wait till mango comes out, its gonna kill android"
"wait till tango"....
"wait till Apollo"....
"wait till surface".....
"wait till" insert new vaporware here.
It's not happening. People simply aren't waiting for Microsoft to wake up and catch up. People are buying NOW, today, and a lot of products.

I was willing to wait till Apollo (I waited for Nodo, Mango, still waiting for Tango-HD7), until MS said that my WP7 phone will not be upgraded. Just got a Galaxy S3, and really enjoying it.

Real PC apps won't work on WP8. I thought the same but i read a bunch of things and even tablet versions of Windows 8 wont support it. It's logical for PC to support mobile apps, but the other way around, not so much.
Edit: Look at your windows programs (assuming you're not using W8). You're not getting them on your phone.

That's a cold dose of reality right there my friend.
LL13-
Oh well. I enjoy my dead software for the moment. Then in a few months when some new Nexus or some Nokia WP8 thing comes out I'll figure out what to pick. I've been using WP for 7 months now, I know its flaws but I still like it, good design never gets old I guess. I'm not a fanboy of any OS, when I'm bored about my phone I pick a new one, simple as that. I'm not going balls deep with any platform tho, so I don't really feel like "bragging" about what I have/"bashing" what I don't. Honestly seeing that JB is now smooth can only make me happier, especially because I'm getting a TF300 soon. Peace out.

I did the same thing and got a Samsung galaxy s3. The deal breaker for me was wp7 would not be upgraded so basically it means that my Samsung focus us dead. i feel horrible that the poor people that recently bought a Nokia lumia now has a dead device. Now ms said sometime in the fall, so if us carriers like att has not even thought about testing it, even windows 7.8 would be released to carriers that will take their time to push next year.

I recently sold my Omnia 7 because I figured that it will become worthless when WP8 arrives since it can't upgrade.
Looking at the WP8 presentation, I'm deeply disappointed in MS because the main thing they're talking about is still "live tiles that no other phone
has". That's just pathetic. Resizeable tiles?.... It wasn't even MS that brought the idea... I saw it about a year ago from some guy here on xda and
now it's their main thing. Other things are just WP trying to catch up with Apple And Android with the same things they already have (wow... offline maps).
I'm too switching to Jelly Bean. Don't have enough for s3, but closely enough for used Galaxy Nexus

so, a beta release of wp8 is something you seriously consider competition for a 3 month old jellybean?
what do you expect to see to see winning over android as you stated 100% ? sales?
the portion of your comment suggesting that developers are just slobbering at the opportunity to jump from Android to wp8 sounds desperate and delusional. you might find some Nokia engineers out of work and be grudgingly apply for a seat, but I doubt that too.
wp7 failed to attract developers AND consumer mind share. what will be different, this time?

Well, I am, so I guess you are wrong. When my contract ran out I got a One X, which I sold after a week. Just couldn't go back to the Android UI, feels old and fugly to me after wp7 for a year. Sooooo, back on my HD7 and waiting for apollo. Whatever floats your boat, I guess
I'm getting tired of those threads... I guess it's time for me to leave XDA after so many years. That forum is simply not the no. 1 place for MS/WM/WP discussion anymore. Just look at the first page, it contains about 90% Android articles. And I am really getting sick of that repetitive Android is better than everything else bullsh... I want serious discussions about that OS I am using and not those dumb comparisons.
What I don't understand is the fact that some of you guys lost hope in MS/WP and switched to an Android device by now but you're still discussing here with your everyday pessimistic posts against MS.

Exactly. People should really start sticking either to the general forum or simply to the one of the OS they HAVE CHOOSEN. This kind of stuff only encourages flame wars and pointless random *****ing. I do understand that this is a critical moment for the platform, but one MUST have something better to do then cry about it all all day, let's try to be constructive, please.
My intentions when opening this thread is to see a real comparison between features and performance of WP (no matter which version) and Android Jelly Bean.
Sorry if I started another flame thread.
I doesn't matter if its 7.5 or 7.8. MS was always talking about smoothness of their OS, but Jelly Bean responded with Project Butter.
What is MSs response to that?

Not going to happen, sorry. RT is entirely different. I believed the same thing until I researched it.

Ok, you may have a point for some devs with the rt/8 possibilities. as stated, they're both vapor ware still. will it cause developers to salivate thinking of the money to be made? dunno
so what will get the consumers minds racing, then? you need consumers to feed those devs .
mmmm, even this is off topic it seems. sorry, op, but its difficult to compare vapor to a working product.
