[Q] Was HTC even prepared for one X release? - HTC One X

Hi frnds here are sm issues that needs a little thinking to cm to the face "WERE THEY PREPARED"?
1. As per lot of threads more of people including myself have been running around for replacement for flickering screen issue.
2. The beats headfones were not included in the BOX means the logo and enhancements were half given not the full package to customers.
3. Jst like in sensation the screens are by two manufacturers.
4. when u open HTC hub no theme, wallpaper etc , means nothing ready as of now. where as in sensation all was ready.
5. HTC scny and htcsense.com on pc is still useless after much proven failure.
6. They promised unlocked bootloaders and here we are again after sensation on same work "S-OFF".
Can sm1 plz add to this what they feel....
Personally i feel this device is a hasty step to catch market before "S3".

Although I haven't actually seen this issue on any HOX yet, it seems to be a big quality control problem.

They had unlocked bootloaders from day one. They never promised anything about S-OFF.
Tbh... the only thing that the phone needs is a software update. It won't take forever.

1. As per lot of threads more of people including myself have been running around for replacement for flickering screen issue.
Hardware/Software, we don't know. Until we hear from Nvidia or HTC we don't know. As of now take HTCs advise and keep replacing until you get a good one.
2. The beats headfones were not included in the BOX means the logo and enhancements were half given not the full package to customers.
Beats are poor full stop. No one said they will be bundling the headphones with the phones. Beats Audio is just an EQ.
3. Jst like in sensation the screens are by two manufacturers.
Cheaper costs?

No comment, don't use this. I use AirDroid.

You can unlock via HTC Dev.

Personally, I don't have this issue. If it's a hardware problem, then HTC will replace it for you. If it's a software problem, it will probably be fixed in future updates.
2. The beats headfones were not included in the BOX means the logo and enhancements were half given not the full package to customers.

They are under no obligation to give you beats headphones with the device. Just because the software is included doesn't mean the headphones will be. The various networks that are giving the headphones away are only doing it as a promotional gift to draw in more customers. The headphones HTC supplied are actually rather good anyway, and 'Beats' in nothing more than an over-hyped, over-priced EQ setting with sub-par quality headphones to go with it.
3. Jst like in sensation the screens are by two manufacturers.

Many companies do this with devices. It's probably to cut costs and/or to get large quantities of the screen made faster.

I agree, I thought this was a little strange. I know more things will be added over time, but it just seemed odd to include the hub from the start when there's literally nothing there.

Not entirely sure what you mean by this, but I absolutely love Sense. It's not laggy anymore and the animations are absolutely fantastic. Failure is the last word I'd use to describe it.
If you are referring to the HTC sync thing on the PC, then yes, it's terrible. You can do everything you need to without it though, so simply don't use it!

We can easily unlock the bootloader via HTCdev. Unlocking your bootloader is NOT the same as having 'S-OFF' and they never said anything about giving us that option. S-OFF has to come from an exploit, I believe, which we will most likely get over time.

I think you're probably right about them rushing to release it before the S3, but almost every single high-end phone is the same. They always push for an early release to beat whichever phone is considered the main competition, whether it be an Android device or an iPhone. But as rushed devices go, this one is very solid indeed. No software or hardware problems (for me, at least) and the build quality is fantastic. There's the overheating issue and battery life problems, but no phone is ever going to be perfect and will only get better over time

My previous phone was the lg optimus 2x, had that from day 1 it came out, the same as this phone! If HTC have rushed it they have done a mighty good job in my opinion, cos the o2x is still a pile of ****e and its been out over a year. I would never get another LG.
Just give them time to iron out the creases

1.Just today a friend of mine bought an HTC One X because he saw mine and he love id.Didn't had any problems with it,i don't have any problems with it.If you have screen problems why don't you go and replace it?
2.Actualy the Beats audio are some enhacement brought to the phone so people can have quality sound when they are listening to headphones.Nowere was written that HTC will provide Beats headphones. You have to realize that only the phone itself without contract and any other deals like that costs like 800 Euro.Imagine how much will it cost if you put in the package some Beats headphones, and honestly most people i don't know if they ever heard of Beats. If you want you can buy a pair of Beats.
3.And the problem with that is....what?Did you know that the Iphone 4S had 2 types of display? The first Iphone 4s (the first lot) had the screen manufactured by Samsung, the other lot (since January 2012) had the screen manufactured by Sony.I don't realy see what the problem is here,is the same type of display, only different manufacturer.
4.Wallpapers you can find all over the web,or you have apps like Zedge where you can download wallpapers, notification sounds, ringtones, etc. Here as well i don't see a problem. And pardon me,do you think that the themes will be so different? You have to realize that all themes have the same icons, the same widgets and so on.If you want to realy customize your phone you have to download Apps that are capable of changing the appearance of the phone.
5.I don't use HTC Sense because is verry limited. You can find a lot of apps out there on the web which are free ( Wondershare Mobile GO,Moborobo, etc).Again i don't see the problem here.
6.You can unlock the bootloader at htcdev, nobody sayd anything about S-OFF.It's quite a difference between unlocking your bootloader and S-OFF.
You have to realize that the phone is brand new, some of us barely started to get used to it.I only got it 9 days ago.You just need to be pacient and HTC will solve eventualy all of the problems (or at least the big ones that are now with some phones). You can't expect that in 3 weeks since the lauch of the phone HTC can solve all the problems. It is absoluthy impossible.Imagine that there are some versions of the OS out there (1.xx.401,1.xx.209,etc),so,for that every version they have to came up with updates to fix them, not to mention that are even branded phones which the software updates are pushed trough the operators first to inspect them, and after that they are lauched for users.

why so mate.... anyway amended

The screen flickering issue is a graphics drivers issue and is also most likely behind the notification corruption and funky banding in the camera app. None of the professional reviewer's units had it and, based on polls, 75% of production phones don't have it. Personally, I believe the chips Nvidia provided for early testing were more uniform than production chips and that this whole issue caught HTC off guard. Hopefully the delay in releasing a fix is HTC being thorough so they don't have to release four updates for Teg3-releated issues the way Asus did. The S4-based XL and S are having no similar issues so if you want to assign blame look to Nvidia. And those devices were no more or less "rushed" than the X.
Outside of that the build issues can be chaukled up to production line teething pains and should go away fairly quickly.
None of this should be foriegn to any of those that got one of the first XEU SGS2's last year.
Sense 4.0 is surprisingly tight considering it's a re-write vs. an update. That's also probably why there aren't more themes available right now. You don't hold up the launch of a product for non-necessary cosmetic features.
The inclusion or exclusion of Beats headphones is a marketing and financial decision and has nothing to do with the timing of the One X's launch.
I wish more threads were started to discussing things that work rather than things that don't. I traveled with my phone this weekend and varying conditions are a good test to see if h/w and s/w hang together well. It peformed better than my SGS2 which has been updated at least a half dozen times. If you guys tracked the launches of the GN, Prime, and Xperia S, outside of the flickering issue, the One X is holding its own just fine.

i don't know about these htcsense and hub things, and i probably wouldn't use them if they worked right. the different screen thing is a problem because a lot of people may want the one they don't have. Beats Audio is garbage to me. i would put Beats headphones in the trash. i use $500 Sennheiser and play lossless audio files. Beats may be good for you if you play mp3s and have free headphones, but i'm a musician. i hope the s-off thing gets fixed so we can have custom kernels. was it rushed? most things are. if you aren't happy, then get a refund and buy something else. mine gets here Tuesday and if i have a serious problem with it, i won't be typing on xda, i will be at my bank filing refund paperwork.

Right or wrong, this is a decision HTC made and has made in the past. It shouldn't surprise anyone and plays no role in the timing of the release of the phone. From a logic perspective, sourcing from two different vendors helps reduce supply chain issues in the event one of them has a problem. I saw a warm display and if it wasn't next to a cool display would have been fine with it. The non-XDA masses probably don't care.
i would put Beats headphones in the trash.

Like Beats? Max out the bass in an equalizer. It's a marketing gimick just like Monster cables at three times the price of ordinary high-quality cables that are produced side-by-side in the same factories.

I'm a little more patient than you. I'd give an HTC update a chance first. But I don't martyr myself on forums because sympathy can't fix problems.

1. QC is bad. It is a rushed production for sure. My phone works perfect. Even when I was on 1.26. Yet, I am aware many others have issues. Make HTC pay for poor QC by asking for an exchange. They will oblige.
2. Beats is not my cup of tea but your argument is like saying buying a game that has the label 'Compatible with Windows 7' should include Windows 7 just because it bears the label.
3. Many companies get supplies of LCDs from different manufacturers. It's normal everyone is doing it. I was an iPhone 4 user and used 2 handsets. Trust me, the difference in quality (color temp) was so massive it is startling. And there is nothing Apple could do for me because its just how supply chain works.
4. Never bothered with HTC hub.
5. S-Off is being worked on by 3rd party people. Be patient.
TLR - If you have bad screen issues get a replacement. If you feel cheated, get a refund. The bottom line is you have to be happy.

Flickering is not softwae issue i can bet on that... i replaced my handset same series but different lot.. and the flicker now is absent..it is indeed faulty hardware used issue....

Indeed i would be a little pissed if i had some problems with it because i'm kinda of a lazy person when it comes to do the same thing over and over again, and i'm reffering here to copying contacts, setting up mail, etc.I'm so lazy i haven't reinstalled windows 7 on my PC since it camed out just because i'm to lazy to reinstall al the drivers, and setting up again how i like it,etc.
I think that the quality check was done, but as far as the screen flickering i think is a transport issue.Maybe the companies that transport this phones just throw them in the trucs and the screen gets affected somehow?I don't think that HTC is so dumb not to make a good quality check before releasing a product.

Not impressed.. :/

Ive had my One X for a couple of days now after upgrading from a desire and its not all it lives up to be for me. Heres what im experiencing so far:
- laggy UI
- sense crashes after using an app for a long period of time
- for a quad core phone it doesnt seem that fast, the browser is slow to zoom / drag and crashes sometimes
- APN settings are locked so i cant set up tethering
- i randomly get no signal in places where i know theres fantastic coverage
- movie maker has a bug where if the phone goes to sleep/standby whilst a movie is rendering then the program crashes and is very difficult to stabilise the phone
- limited mobile network settings
The desire is just so much more perfected and bug free, i can count the number of crashes and problems for the 2 years i had it on one hand. Brilliant phone. The one X on the other hand is starting to do my head in already..
Saying that, i did buy the desire at least 6 months or so after it was first released. The one X is a VERY new device only being a few days from release at the time of this post. Im hoping updates etc sort this phone out and turn it into a stable powerhouse that it claims to be.
Thoughts / advice on any of the issues ive mentioned? Maybe ive just got an iffy handset? Its on orange, and the limited white edition from phones 4 u.
Sam
I switched from the desire and am not missing the limited internal memory. On my desire I went to a custom rom to do anything when I ran out of space.
Only down side is battery life with screen on is so far about 4 hours but standby power usage is amazing, hardly drops with 4 email accounts syncing and countless other sync jobs.
I wasn't sure drop box integration would work. But it makes managing pics so easy.
Wait for HTC update that should sort some of the early adoption issues. Use chrome browser for internet. So smooth.
One x screen is the best I have experienced on any phone. Have you forgotten you couldn't even see the desire screen in daylight.
I still have my rooted if you want to swap.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
You said it all in your last sentence.
if you don't want a phone with teething problems, don't buy a phone on day one. If you do buy on day one, expect issues. I have had 10s of phones from Windows to Symbian, IOS to Android to Meego. Not 1 phone that i got when it first came out did not have issues.
i wonder if quad core has any thing to do with this...meaning old software may not work as well with a quad vs a dual core
HTC need to send the update out which people say improve battery life. I had a custom ics on my old desire and some app crashes is just that apps need to work better with ICS things like threading background tasks etc. I think it's an ics feature so you don't have apps keeping battery awake
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
I have a hunch it is the orange bloatware messing things up if your phone is branded.
Otherwise, check firmware version, what is it?
What do you mean limited mobile network setting?
just because its quad core doesnt mean you arent going to experience any issues, as ppl think ooo quad core and its the fastest and if its not im throwing dummy out,
as mentioned about a day one release phone= many issues to start with ....
its an amazing phone
thxs 4 your opinion.okay.bye!

I am having the same issues, and also came from a desire. Give this phone time, HTC can't be relied upon to produce the software, so wait for non-HTC root and turn to the community to fix the phone
So much for a new start, nothing worse than receiving a £500 device which is flawed due to buggy and rushed software implementation.
Not quite quietly brilliant....
stop stop stop this getting too ridiculous
do you really expect a device on a new major OS revision and Skin and a completely new SOC vendor to work bug free from day one? ur kidding, then why did they make the very idea of OTA if a bug free software is achievable from day one
I agree its disappointing to have this much defects and s major Tegra3 bug but comeon already the One X is just begining of a long journey
have some patience do you remember how ridiculous the desire was on android 2.1??

when the company you are purchasing from tells you they've sorted themselves out and are releasing a new flagship product, then i'd expect 1 or 2 defects, yes. That's not what's happening here is it?
guy: wow, that the new one x?
me: yeah
guy: ewww.. look at that lag, my sensation doesn't do that! and look at that stupid camera, that's going to get scratched in no time... oh, is your screen flashing? wait, it's falling off! ...did you charge this? it's 11am and you have like 30% battery!
me: yeh, err, there's a patch coming that err, might fix it! but we only have the chinese version and I can't root without voiding my warranty!
guy: how much was it again?
apple guy (interject): LOL
...underwhelmed

I must agree with zombiefly here... The bugs should be in the small parts. Not in the main parth of the phone, like games, screens and browser... glitching, lag and... Should be minimilised. And these factors are the biggest problems on the one X however.
Problems like a calendar with over 20 appointment doing weird is a bug that no one would really go crazy abouth. And that this is a bug that made the first release is understandable. The first part of the problems I mentioned, isn't...
two things I don't understand
90% of the reviewers were floored by the device and believe me the same sites that used to slaughter HTC for the past year and yet no one complained about one bug, in fact most said its bugs free
in the poll thread u have around 80% saying their device is perfect, I myself bought two and found non
so you tell me who should I believe? 10% if the reviewers, 20% of the users in the general section or lie to myself?
you know what it just hit me, I'm willing to bet most complaints are coming from previous iPhone and Samsung users just because are different than what they r used to
my iBoss once decided to buy my old desire out of curiosity and man he almost committed suicide, he didn't last two days and said everything is broken and not working, hek his face started to deform
the very same Desire that our OP in here said is better than the One X
besides the genuine factory defects and the Tegra3 bug I call every other complaint subjective

Agreed: Now I do understand bugs are there in just about every phone and to be honest they are normally bugs you can live with until an update; the problem here is that the bugs are completely preventing the use of the device and/or making the use of the device very difficult. No phone should be released with this being the case.

That thread is about built quality though not about the actually OS of the phone and the issues when using the device. The majority of bugs are not acceptable to be honest... We all understand there will be bugs (i said this above) but they should affect the actually ability to use the phone.
If you come from a Desire, then you must remember how it was in the beggining... the Desire matured really well with updates, also had its fair share of problemas in the beggining. Was a great phone though, as is the One X.
Give it time, the phone is already awesome, but with AOSP + a good custom kernel this is going to be even better

Agreed the phone is an amazing device; no doubt the best I have used. Some of the bugs are easy to be patient with (providing they will be fixed), some of them though are serious and do cause major issues. I guess it all depends on how quickly an update will be out; I mean lets be fair in the UK this phone has only been out for just under 2 weeks now SIM Free and just over a week on carriers and no doubts its sold shed loads!
My issue is how quickly will an update come out? Also will it come out on SIM Free first; and if it does how long after will it be before the carriers release the update? The last thing I want is to be sat using a phone with bugs for the next month or two and I think most people would think the same. If its a matter of a week or two for most/all the bugs to be fixed then everyone would be happy to wait.
It's a shame there has been no reports from HTC on this...
can i just say that i have had the phone a week
no bugs
no juddering display
no lag in apps or Chrome
no crashes
and battery lasts me over 24 hours no problem since day 1 (was careful with first 3 charges)
i am very pleased with my first Android handset having had Blackberrys/iPhones for past few years and i hope to remain an Android user for many years to come.

Tell them to come back to you after 1 or 2 months when the custom ROMs are starting to come in droves and your battery is broken in properly, we'll see who's the daddy
Seriously people: early adopters = beta testers. It seems to be the norm these days. I'm not saying it's OK, just that it's happening, like it or not. Give the phone a little time.

^^The man's right. 2 years ago I bought the flagship phone of the time: the Desire, and I still vividly remember how terrible it was when I got it, both software and battery wise; 3-4-5 hours out of the box, like the One X now. The battery got a LOT better with use, over the course of a couple of weeks, and most of the software problems were sorted, albeit by custom ROM chefs. Don't know about official HTC soft though, as I rooted within a week of getting the Desire and put on a non-Sense ROM - I never looked back. It'll be the first thing to do again when I pick up the 1X, I hate Sense with a passion.
To be honest, this whole "omfg crap battery" and "omfg buggy software" thing is a bit of a storm in a teacup. I suspect immature Tegra drivers in the background, also the 4 main cores do a lot more work than they're supposed to, probably because most of the apps out there still need to be optimised for ICS. I'm confident it'll get sorted and I still plan to buy the 1X once I get the finances sorted, it's the first phone I'd consider replacing my Desire with.

So are you guys sticking with the One X then? I'm undecided.

So I have never considered the S3 before, but I have two weeks left to replace my One X (Second One X with dodgy compass) and I am wondering whether to just give up and ask for a S3 instead.
First of all let me say that I LOVE the One X, and the better screen and sleeker looks are more than enough for me to pick it over the S3 with it's otherwise stronger specs - were it not for the faults with the device.
Build quality is iffy, and I have had two HOXes now, both of which have had dodgy gps which just don't work (they show me spinning around on the spot and moving around rapidly on the map when I am standing still). But perhaps getting another replacement would fix that.
But that isn't all. The fact that wi-fi turns off when the phone goes into stand-by is a huuge inconvenience, as I have to keep on interacting with the phone whenever I am down/uploading a large file, so it doesn't stop half way through. I shouldn't have to do this.
Also, the multi-tasking is pretty awful and doesn't seem to have been coded well at all.
Now my question is, do you guys foresee these problems being sorted out in the not-too-distant future, or are you considering switching over to the S3 as well? Also, do you expect the S3 to have similar problems when it comes out?
I just want to reiterate that I love this phone and really don't want to slag it off, but the combined problems are really getting me down, and I don't think an expensive top-end mobile should should be so flawed.
TY for any thoughts and opinions in advance.
EDIT: Ok well. Two of the biggest problems I had with the One X seem to have been solved already.
First of all, the 1.29.0.11 (??) patch has apparently fixed multi-tasking.
Also, some genius has managed to show me a fix for the wi-fi turning off when the phone is in standby.

I tried this out, and my phone's wifi now stays connected even when the screen is turned off!! Woop!!!!
Still leaves the factor of a dodgy GPS, but I am more than happy to get a replacement HOX as the other main problems have been alleviated
Same question for me. I got 2nd one atm and still got probs with it. Like the GPS like you, gap on the side, WiFi turnin off....... I like this thing and I want it workin but now I'm in the role that I could change to another device on Vodafone Germany because its getting the 3rd replacement. I don't know what to do too... Greetz

Yes.
But even if it stayed on until the download was finished, that wouldn't be OK in my opinion.
I am for at least 12 months. As much as the lack of s-off is annoying it isn't the deal breaker so long as HTC are releasing pretty regular updates for the bugs found. As far as my devices build quality is concerned I have no problems. Just not worth using htcdev until half way through my contract risking the loss of warranty.
The device itself should entertain me as is for 12 months. Hunting S-OFF is a side attraction until then post that date root via htcdev will see me the latter half of the contract by keeping me interested.
Sticking with One X for now unless something real enticing comes. SGS3 was a disappointment IMO. Maybe the Sony GX or the next Nexus I'll upgrade. Maybe even iPhone 5
SGS3 has multitasking problems also according to a reviewer/user if we're talking about the same problem.
Wi-Fi should be fixed, One S had it fixed I believe.
I personally haven't run into wi-fi problems recently. For a a little while when running a new build of ARHD, I all of a sudden got the wi-fi problems ppl were talking about. Didn't have the problems before that. Switched over to LeeDroid and haven't run into the wi-fi problem since.
You can set a longer screen off time when downloading, also I'm sorry to say I don't have the same problems :/

as much as i hate to say this i am undecided as well..now if my carrier comes back to me and they say i can replace my handset then i will go for the s3. now do not get me wrong i love my one x. but at the same time with all the issues going on kinda puts me off. hence how do i know i will not get another dodgy one..if they say they can only repair it then i will hold off sending it as it is still fully functional and were i have the creaking i stuck a case over it and it has stopped for now..so it goes like this
replace it for me then i am going for the s3
if they say no then one x it is and still a great device and i have recommended it to a few of my friends and hoping they get a good batch

im selling mine when i borrow a camera for pics. i made a mistake leaving Samsung. i might get the nexus though. Google wallet might actually work. i have never seen so many duplicate threads, clueless users, and mods choosing when to enforce rules and when not to.
I'm selling mine as soon as it comes back from HTC, should be a brand new one. I won't open it and will sell it straight away and buy a S3.

Yeah it is pretty nasty looking isn't it! I also don't like the idea of having 16gb base memory even if it is expandable. I much prefer the 32gb internal memory of the One X over Micro SD as it is so much quicker - and I dont need to fork out even more money for an SD card.
Hmmmm..... This is really annoying. Why couldnt you just get the phone right HTC!!??

The question is no different than asking "which should I buy, a M-B E Class or BMW 5 Series?" Both have strengths and weaknesses and neither is immune from issues.
The same applies to the One X vs. SGS3 comparison.
Here's a list of reasons why not to get a One X over a SGS3.
1) You like SAMOLED displays.
2) You need better battery life than the 1800mAh non-removable battery in the One X can provide.
3) You want removable storage.
4) You don't like the One X design or are partial to the SGS3's.
5) You like TouchWiz better than Sense.
6) HTC's new warranty policy for flashing third-party ROMs either scares you or pisses you off.
7) You fancy some of the s/w features like Direct Talk, S-Voice, and Smart Stay.
8) You use $300 plus headphones or have several thousands of dollars’ worth of home A/V equipment and the Wolfson DAC's important.
Here's a list of things that are going to be the same.
1) Initial build quality issues.
2) Initial s/w problems.
3) Variations from display-to-display.
4) Durability and longevity.
5) Excellent development support.
Voice calls, e-mail, MMS, social, and web browsing make up 70% of what people do with smartphones. In those areas it would be hard to tell the two phones apart. Happy decision making.
P.S. – For those on their 9th exchange, now hate HTC for whatever reason, or have expectations no phone ever produced could meet; there’s no need to re-post what you’ve most likely already posted a dozen times. I, and I’m sure others get it; the One X has some launch issues and because of that your life is forever altered.
sticking with it.. does everything I need and it's the sexiest phone on the market right now. so why would I need to move? Plus I'm on a 2 year contract so doesn't justify me breaking my contract or selling my phone for less than its actual worth.
@BarryH I think that's a little unfair. I wasn't trying to run through faults that have already been covered at great length elsewhere on the forum. Nor was I asking for a basic tally of pros and cons of S3 versus the One X.
My aim was to gauge the community's loyalty towards the One X given the faults and flaws that the device shipped with, and whether many would be making the switch over to the S3.
Also, the majority of the problems with the One X are not examples of people being overly picky or entitled - they are cases of the phone simply not doing what it was designed to do. Now I have no idea if or how long it will take HTC to fix them, but that is why I asked what peoples' thoughts about that where in the original post.
Thanks for responding

I wasn't faulting your original question. Sorry if it came across that way. The One X vs. SGS3 comparison/debate will be ongoing for most of the year. I was just trying to provide a check list for people on the fence. I'd guess most people leaving the One X would be going to the SGS3 anyway. I never did answer your original question. I'm getting a SGS3 and using it for a week or two before deciding which phone to keep. And not because I think there's anything wrong with the One X.

4 HTC One X'es Later

Were do I start......My first One x had dead pixels and dust under screen, 2nd big yellow blob on grey or dark screens, 3rd Vibration stopped working, dead pixels and the last one had 3 dead pixels.... The phone its self is fantastic but HTC's build quality is dire...I have lost all faith in HTC, Luckily the Carphone Warehouse managed to exchange my phone for a different model of the same spec, as I was still within 28 days and because I had had so many exchanges.
@Op

Well, ok. A headache, for sure, but everyone who has had a defect has sent it back and got it replaced and eventually got a good one. Most people don't have problems at all. I know I don't have anything wrong with mine. Just try to buy from someone you can get it swapped out at easily so you can make sure you get a good one. The defects are annoying, but I have no doubt they will get worked out. It's all part of early adoption.
I haven't really paid attention to the defects threads, but are newer versions nearly defect free yet? Or are they just as likely to be bad?
On my 4th too, but so far (touch wood) I have a keeper I think.
1st was yellow stains on screen
2nd was unusable GPS
3rd was yellow spots (battery hitting 65C)
4th has lasted nearly two weeks so far (yay!)
It's not perfect - there is a small amount of light leakage at the bottom of the screen and GPS is not perfect, but nothing that would warrant an exchange.....yet.
Not sure if it is just the UK thats had problems, but T-Mobile confirmed when I returned my second that they had a load of returns - had to wait for stock to come back in before they could exchange.
Now I've had one though, I think I might find it hard to swap for any other phone, despite its flaws.
There will always be a sense of 'the phone it could/should have been' though - I guess they had to leave something to improve for the Two X
Only real remaining issue for me is the heat and battery life but I guess they are the sacrifices we have to make for adopting new technology.
Incredible to read, awful for you.
Touch wood indeed, hopefully it will be ok this time.
In the 8 years experience I have with HTC I never experienced such thing.
My previous devices, HTC Universal, Kaiser, Artemis, Blackstone, HD2, and now One X and no problem once again, amazing isn't?
I can't believe it, so much luck I have.
One thing you probably must admit, the service of HTC must be great if they try to fix your device 4 times in a row isn't?
And they must have done that very quick as well because the device isn't that long on the market (1, max 2 months?).
Honestly, I wish you good luck with the current device.
Edit; I see you both (Op and you) come from the UK, could it be possible HTC shipped some bad quality samples to the UK?
It's just a taught.

It's possible. It's also possible that they rushed the launch to get out ahead of the S3 and consequently cut some corners.

I think that's a tad harsh
The HOX could and should have been a stunning phone and there is still room for most of the problems to be ironed out with software updates.
I'm not sure Tegra 3 was the wisest choice though - It just seems to run too hot for its intended use in a phone - maybe we'll have to start getting used to fans in our phones!
I'd have been happier with an S4 and this screen and design (though I'd give up a few mm for a bigger battery). Seems like for once the US has the better alternative to us
Hmm.. I don't think HTC needs to push out anything to stay ahead of Samsung.
And those words are only assumptions isn't?
Fact is, in a forum there's always more negative feedback as positive, because people who are happy with the device don't have the need to talk about it.

I agree with this completely.
I know more than 5 people with a HOX and none have had any problems.
My ONE X is perfect! Got it June 1st, not a problem at all. After reading all the negative comments a while back I did find myself looking for issues that I wasnt aware of but if you look so hard you will most likely find some tiny imperfection, these threads tend to make people do that.

Which evidence you are talking about, who says they are trying to compete?
I don't read anything about HTC pushed out the One X.
Sure that other company pushed out a lot of phones I read in the article.
Aggressive commercials always work but they don't say anything for me, even if it's a market leader atm, it doesn't say anything about the product.

Me neither.
The games I play:

* Grand Theft Auto III

3D very recourse hungry games if you ask me.
My device should burn playing these if I read the stories in this thread.

And about multitasking, I know it sometimes has issues but I think that's more related to the app then to the machine.
For example, I do sports.
So I listen to music, check my training sessions with Runtastic, have a bluetooth heartrate sensor connected, plus a bluetooth stereo headset, checking my Facebook etc etc, multitasking works pretty good I would say, none of the apps close.
It's incredible how much apps I have installed and still my device runs great with plenty of memory and decent battery consumption.

So you think its coincidence that HTC released an unfinished phone 2 weeks prior to the Galaxy S3 from the market leading company arriving?
Of course it was a rush job to get it out before everyone this year buys an S3, its the only way they can get some of the market share that Samsung dominate.
I disagree, it all depends what strategy you take.
For example, today we have HTC One X but who knows what will come tomorrow.
It wasn't a rush, the phone is great with just a few glitches in software, HTC will iron them out in the next update ;-)

You're an unlucky man
I've had my HOX since as long as it's been available here in NL. I've dropped it, kept it without a case in my jeans pocket and it's flawless.
I assume most of this is FUD.

[Q] Once bitten twice shy - should I get the S3?

HTC One X owner from India..big fan of HTC products..until now.
After several weeks of careful deliberation I decided to buy the infamous HTC One X, brushing aside the wide variety of build defects being reported all over the internet.
The first time around I discovered the damned WiFi issue and immediately got a DOA certificate from HTC. Got my replacement HOX this Saturday, a brand new piece, and foolishly enough I didn't check the phone at the store. I also had the option of buying an S3 but decided to settle with a HOX (because of my loyalty to HTC)
Later I realized that the display has a big yellow spot on the top and a glaring black spot (both clearly visible on a white background) right in the center of the screen. Rushed back to the store and got another DOA certificate.
My dilemma is - should I trust HTC the third time around? I really want to, despite the nightmare I have faced, but is it worth it? Should I just get the freaking S3?
You should stick with HOX in my opinion you were just extremely unlucky on the first two, if you're used to HTC phones you are going to miss a lot of features and sense if you go for the S3.

Lol had the same dilemma after my first HOX had the screen flex issue.
But samsung service sucks here so i decided to give HOX another go, Fortunately for me the replacement seems perfect with only the rattle sound being an issue/, But i heard its quite normal in all smartphones so i am happy now
get another HOX you wont regret it.
It's a no brainer.. the S3 sucks....
hmmm
i just love sense too much... i'd try again.
i'm an htc-addict.
but: you have to make this choice, we can't help you. why don't you try a S3 in store and see if you like it?
go into the store and get a third one..and before you do read this thread so you know what to look out for so you get the perfect one

Thanks guys..well the unanimous opinion here seems to be in favor of the HoX. I am quite keen to give HTC one more shot so I've decided to wait till a new batch comes in (the one that gave me trouble was the SH24LW). I have also written to HTC Asia customer grievances. Let's see what they have to say about it.
The funny thing is when I went to the service center today I met 4 people there with issues ranging from WiFi to overheating and display problems. I spoke to these folks and they were all intermediate to advanced users. What I really feel enraged about is the fact that an average or novice user who buys this device is never going to notice all these issue and end up owning a substandard product that's going to give him problem in the longer run.
Its not everyday you buy such an expensive device and the least you would expect is to get some promise of quality from a global giant like HTC.

You see the problem here is that you have to buy the device first before you can break the seal and have a look inside.. and once you do that you inadvertently end up buying the device.. which means if theres a defect you go to the service center, which is about 10 miles from the store, and get a DOA certificate.. then come back all the way round and replace the phone. My cost of ownership of this phone has already surpassed the original price by 50$. Not to mention the 2 days of productivity lost at work!

I did try the S3 the first time I went to buy the HoX and I didnt like it one bit. It crossed my mind when I went back to the store to get my first replacement and I had a look at the S3 for a good 20 minutes before walking out with another HoX. Now I have another chance so I just wanted everyone's opinion here.
Thanks!

do you not have the seven day return policy? so say if you are not happy with the handset you got that 7 day window to return it?
that is what we have over here in the UK and makes life a lot easier specially for those who can not make their mind up.
anyways you can still use the guide and ask these questions at the store were you purchase the phone and that way you can have a peace of mind about it if the employees are helpful that is and answer your questions

Unfortunately, we enjoy no such privilege here. The store just retails the product and if you face a problem you have to approach the manufacturer directly.
As for asking questions at the store - here's an interesting story for you. When I informed the salesman about the overheating problem he asked me to use headphones instead
Then I showed him the display issue and he asked me not to open apps with a white background. At the HTC service center I overheard the engineer tell a customer that he cant use headphones other than the ones bundled with the phone otherwise the phone's warranty will be voided. I gave him such a look that he mellowed down and gave up on that logic.

This is India dude..I wouldn't be surprised if the engineers at the service center are unaware of even the screen resolution of one x..happened with me at Samsung's service center..guy told me that s2 n Note have exactly the same resolution..so don't rely on their judgement..just check that the phone is from the latest lot ie either HT25 or 26 or SH series..I would recommend that u go with HT series which stands for manufactured in Taiwan..mine is a real early Taiwan build of March and its flawless in every department..

Both phones were SH24. Didn't find a single SH25/26 here (Bombay) let along a HT.
Me too using ht version and I am from India . Just go for one more hox . You will get a good one. My prayers for you.
Gs3 sucks , I had given a try. Even if you buy s3 you will sell it . Even faulty hox is better than the proper s3.
You will get good one.

My first android phone I have been lucky the only thing I can find wrong with mine is that it makes a hissing noise when recording in 1080p I just turn off stereo and records fine no hiss. If I was in your shoes 2 faulty devices I would diff go for the sgs3 that many f ups is unexceptable

This is a One x forum, of course the unanimous opinion is going to be in favor of the One X. I always tell people who ask which one they should pick that they should base their choice on what they prefer in their phone. Both are the best on the market right now but depends if you like slcd screens or AMOLED technology, if you need a lot of storage, if you're attracted to the beautiful body of the phone, sense or touchwiz, battery life ect... You search what you want in your phone and pick which one to go with.

I do agree on this, lots of users had/ have issues with the one x, I happen to be one of the lucky people without any issues whatsoever and its been great. But again both phones are great so just make sure you know what you're looking for in a phone OP.

Why I don't want anymore HTC

I think that HOX will be last phone from HTC. I was around 3 years with this brand. And is started to be annoyed. Why I don't take anymore HTC:
1. They don't improve performance
2. They do update just for one year
3. Phone is heating when you doing simple tasks, like web browsing. So when phone is heating so it drain battery.
4. Is hard to replace battery or open phone.
5. Where not a lot accessories
6. Gorilla screen brakes so easy and if brakes, touch screan doesn't work
7. Plenty app which I don't use and this apps drains battery. You can't remove it
8. Where no online service, like HTC sence
9. Usb socket is in wrong position. Isn't comfortable
10. Where is no many future comparing with samsung s4. Like eye tracking, like answer call with hand wave.
11. Phone unlock itself even then you have pin lock
12. Sometimes phone shutdown when is in pocket.
Main thing why I started hate this phone, they add some apps, small futures which I don't use and they don't improve OS performance. I mean HTC sence performance.

For me this points are really useless points.
I just ask a question. Do you even want to control your phone with your eye?
Or want a laggy TW?
May only the updates is really slow, but nothing other.
Samsung in your hand feel like a plastic toy phone. The HTC in your hand feel like a boss.
So I think this ponit are only matters for children. Sorry, but this is true.
The only bad ponit for HOX or other HTC phones is the support.

Good to know, every phone is for that person that wants it.
If you don't want it, don't use it.
Not everybody drives Mercedes because it is not made for everyone.
Have a nice day.
Is not that thing that I mean. Read carefully. Samsung is improving hardware and OS. They do updates even for 2 years older phones. Samsung S4 use less RAM (like 200 MB) than HOX. So I want pay money for work and ideas. But not for ideas which make phone don't last and which doesn't work properly.

Of course I agree. Thing that I discovered, that I was using HTC products for more than 2 years. But I didn't see that phone is getting better. Plus, they made some restrictions. I thought that I can use in business and for casual. But I can see, I can give this phone to child, where he can play with phone and always keep charging. If I will start use all HTC futeres, so I need a battery bank. Do you buy car which 40 litres petrol for 50 miles? When you can buy better car and it uses less petrol.

I don't really know what you are talking about
If you think you will be happier with Samsung or any other phone, go ahead. I am not here to stop you.
All I want to say is: good luck with some other phone than HTC and I hope battery will last longer for you and you will be pleased to use gestures on your phone. It is not like any major science or usability about that for me. I could download software that is similar but why? I am pleased with what my phone can do and there is nothing about other phones that can do something completely new that would blow my mind.
About the cars.. than on your opinion Fiat 500 (or something you like) is better than ..lets say.. Aston Martin Vanquish? Because it uses less petrol?
It is ok if you think so, but people have different opinions about everything. Have that in mind!
Have a nice day deciding what to do next

Yea, and HOX and S4 are made at exact same time and are both same years devices? Ofcourse there are differences! What would be the point having multiple high-end phone brands if all were the same.
I also don't want HTC next time round, but not for these reasons.
My reasons:
1 - They shut down dev's for no reason
2 - They shut down dev's site with no warning and stump the community
3 - They don't care about customers
4 - They LIE to customers
5 - They replace parts under warranty with generic crappy alternatives and hope the customer doesn't realize
I could go on, but I'll leave it there.

Yeah, the HTC not improve OS and hardware. That's why we get the 4.2.2 soon..
Btw, why do you compare the s4 and the HOX?
Compare s4 and One or s3 and HOX.
The ponit which I said is, the Samsung just improve features which looks good in the commercial and not a real life useable features.
In HTC Sense there are a lot of usable features, and don't forget this is one of the (if its not the) best skins. Not like a TW which lagg all day.
Yeah, the Samsung improve the OS more. But for why? Place useless features for why?
For people ,like you. Want to buy an S4 more than One.

3 - No they don't, they'll replace it for you because thats what they have to do as statutory law.
4 - They lie about more than you'll know, you just have to find it. Have a quick Google and you'll see a vast array of people complaining that they've been given generic parts sub-par standard to originals, which they can't deny as part numbers don't lie.

As I said, everyone has his own point of view.
It is not like i'm emotionally attached to service center at all. From users point of view I never had any problems with HTC.
I am sorry to hear about your poor experience. Are you a developer and HTC did something to you that hurt your feelings? Too bad. Go get Samsung than, maybe they will treat you better.
About HTC in my opinion: small company that makes awesome phones (design and SW) in comparison to "mainstream" and "boring" big companies like Apple and Samsung. That is why I like them - they are not afraid of changing things, design and everything. They are struggling but they are still donating money (http://www.letsgomobile.org/en/3488/china-sichuan-earthquake-donation/ AND http://www.slashgear.com/htc-chairw...ts-to-young-women-in-southeast-asia-28279650/). That makes me feel like I am part of something good and although all companies have their lacks and you have to choose between all of them..I choose HTC.
You can choose among others. And I hope you will be satisfied
Now I only said one thing.
If you are not pleased with the premium materials for body. ( so you want a plastic toy phone). And you all the time want the brand to lick your a.ss. Just go to the Samsung, they will do. The HTC not, for why? Because this phones not need to be upgraded. Yes it's good if its upgraded, but not needed because this phones are awesome for now and for many years with stock system.

This is my answer for you:
1. They don't improve performance - Better performance than Samsung, LG and Sony (Tested)
2. They do update just for one year - that's not true, HOX have more than a year in market whit many updates and coming more
3. Phone is heating when you doing simple tasks, like web browsing. So when phone is heating so it drain battery. - My hox is cool like my frezeer doing everything.
4. Is hard to replace battery or open phone. - new Google politics, and others like sony are doing the same.
5. Where not a lot accessories - there is the necesary accessories, what they don't have?
6. Gorilla screen brakes so easy and if brakes, touch screan doesn't work - Hox is a very resistive phone, much than samsung and iPhone (I had an accident on my motorcycle and my hox went flying to the asphalt and absolutely nothing happened.)
7. Plenty app which I don't use and this apps drains battery. You can't remove it - you can remove the app you want, if you do not know how to do it is another thing.
8. Where no online service, like HTC sence - we dont need it, we have Google services and Dropbox, why more?
9. Usb socket is in wrong position. Isn't comfortable - usb socket is the right place (side), only samsung and iPhone used at the bottom of the phone
10. Where is no many future comparing with samsung s4. Like eye tracking, like answer call with hand wave. - HTC sense has many features, but points more to the social and multimedia platform, is a choice. According steven Kondik (Cyanogen) Touch wiz on the s4 seems froyo, but HTC sense 5 as more friendly, modern and pleasant to use.
11. Phone unlock itself even then you have pin lock- m8 your phone have serious problems that others dont have
12. Sometimes phone shutdown when is in pocket. - again: m8 your phone have serious problems that others dont have
to finish, if you see the reviews the Best phone at the moment is a HTC phone, The HTC One.
