Anyone know where one can be brought? also why have I read stuff about the s2 having mini usb? it doesn't it has the same propriety connector as the galaxy s.
It's MHL. It's the supposed new 'standard' for connectivity. I think most devices are using that connection nowadays. Last I heard was Clove saying the MHL adapters won't be out until June.

really? so the original galaxy s had mhl as well? Any suggestions on what to do with my fancy new phone? so far apart from being super quick it just seems like a sleaker bigger galaxy s, I cant think of anything my galaxy s couldn't do :S
Oh I know I'm gonna see if the wii mote works on this thing

I can't find any evidence that it did.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link
It's the new standard, but that doesn't mean older devices support it. The SGS2 is one of the first AFAIK
But nothing on the market will currently work? HDMI out from a mobile is just supercool!
I have both an sgs1 and sgs 2, my charger fits the micro usb (the only i/o connector) on the phones, perfectly
The connectors should be the same on the S1 and S2, but only the S2 is MHL compatible.
I think MHL can use any 5 pin connector to send an HDMI signal while receiving power for charging.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to use the MHL HDMI out and USB at the same time, but I hope this is possible.
I'm also guessing that the adaptor will need to be a clever one with circuitry rather than a passive adaptor. Does anyone know if this will definitely be the case, and if so I'd imagine it'll have cost implications! Hope I'm wrong and a passive adaptor is possible
Coming from a LG Optimus 2x, that came with a Micro USB ---> HDMI cable. These are available from Ebay for a GBP 10 - would these work?
Yea guessing its just MHL compatible as the old port was usb compatible. Thats annoying, with all the talk of this new standard usb-hdmi port I was assuming it would use a standard connector and not a proprietary one.
It stupid really if all manufacturers used the same connector we wouldn't have to have multiple chargers/docks/cables
You can't use the USB port for MHL and USB functions at the same time, this is confirmed (if you search for MHL at youTube there is a great video with a person from the MHL consortium explaining it).
To badasschris: this isn't a proprietary port. Samsung, Nokia, Sony, HTC, Toshiba, and quite a few other partners are involved with it, it seems likely to become the standard for mobile devices (iPhone aside, I am sure Apply will continue to push their proprietary ports).

Are you absolutely sure it isnt proprietary? Why I am getting confused is because it has the same port as the galaxy s1 and I heard nothing about that being a standard port and you always have to buy a samsung charger not a [standard port] charger e.g. mini usb charger for any devices which have mini usb. So you are saying at some point the other manufactorers will have the same port and I will be able to use my galaxy s charger to charge them?
Galaxy S is a standard micro USB port, and lacks the MHL connection, its not proprietary at all, I use several non-Samsung cables to charge the phone in my car and from PCs. Most manufacturers, Apple excluded, use micro USB charging now.
The port in the Galaxy SII is not the same as the Galaxy S, as it has MHL connectivity in addition, but its function as a micro USB port for mass memory and charging is perfectly standard, and doesn't require special cables or connectors of any kind.

lol I had to thank you there I've been a right plonker. I remember seeing someone say the origional galaxy s was micro usb and then when I saw it I thought that't not micro usb. It just clicked I have been getting micro and mini usb confused. When anyone said micro I immediately assumed mini
Glad I got that sorted.
Is it possible to buy an MHL to HDMI cable? Where?

That sucks. I was hoping to look into making a tablet dock that used a USB capacitive touch screen & HDMI output for the screen.
A laptop dock using Bluetooth for the keyboard and HDMI for the screen would still be possible, or a tablet that used Bluetooth for the touch-screen.
This phone is powerful - it's annoying not to be able to use the hardware for more than just a phone.
I reckon Motorola is thinking along the right lines with the Atrix, and I hoped other manufacturers would be too, but this combined port indicates Samsung are probably not.

Plus you have the added fact that samsung like to mess with bluetooth meaning many devices wont work with it. I really hope the bluetooth situation gets fixed somehow as this device paired with a screen and a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and game pad gives you a portable computer / games console. without it its just an amazing phone
This should work perfectly with bluetooth mouse and keyboard, my SGSI does. It should also work with a Zeemote, unfortunately it doesn't have enough buttons to be that good for using in emulators.
I can confirm that the igo stowaway bluetooth keyboard works fine w/the SGS2 in case anyone's curious

Good question. That's what we are all looking for.
So far i have only seen two places selling them Clove and Expansys are doing it 2 £24.99 they ar egetting them in on the 28th May
I am looking for an inexpensive USB to HDMI adaptor. There is a huge price range for this kind of device. I have found some online for as little as $12 or as much as $150.
Does anyone know if the inexpensive ones will will work on a Tab 10.1 with a USB dongle attached?

I never tried this, but I think chances are very low that any of them will work on android.
They need special driver software to use them as graphics devices. As far as I know, no such drivers exist on android.
So you're looking to bypass the oem product this way?
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2011/08/03/samsung-galaxy-tab-adapters/
Due to expense?
Struggling to understand why you would not use the HDMI connector that Samsung produces
I am looking for a lower cost solution. The Samsung adaptor is about $40. There are dozens of USB to HDMI devices out there for much less. If they will work when connected to the USB adapter that I already have, it seems like a reasonable way to go.
Fair enough, seems a little like a false economy to me as $40 isn't that much. I suppose it will depend on how much you use it.

You have to watch out a little with that ...
I assumed you were talking about 'real' USB to HDMI in your original post. As I mentioned above, these need specific driver software.
There are also a lot of MHL devices out there, which use a micro usb connector to get to the MHL signal. These can - e.g. - be used on some galaxy phones. These are not real USB devices. They use an USB connector to get to the MHL signal (which is close to HDMI) and translate that to HDMI.
Theoretically, these could be used with the Galaxy Tab 10.1 (which also has MHL output). But the normal USB connector for the Galaxy Tab will connect them to the wrong ports.
Moreover, price of the original adapter has dropped much.

Hmmm really???
Errr I got one HDMI adapter for my HTC Sensation, it worked out of the box, I dont think your statement is totally true..
Yes driver is included as far as I know anyway, why would samsung make a HDMI device that wasnt supported by Android..Or HTC for that matter..
Is'nt this down to the GPU rather than the Android.???
Correct me if Im wrong of course..But doesnt the Tab have a seperate GPU or Tegra Chip lets say..
M..

Yes, that is correct.
The HTC Sensation also has MHL support. Yes, that is generated by the GPU. And yes, for that the USB connections are reused. So, the MHL output is send through the same lines as the USB lines. There is some nifty hardware in the HTC Sensation to make this work. The same mechanism is used in multiple devices. But it's not USB, so no drivers are needed for that. I guess that the main reason for this, is not having to add yet another port to these devices.
The Galaxy Tab 10.1 does not have a USB port. It has a wider port that brings out both USB and MHL (on different lines). So, the normal USB adapter will bring out the USB lines. Hence your HDMI adapter will not work with the normal USB adapter for the Galaxy Tab 10.1.
If you know how to reroute the lines, you might get it to work.
For more info, just look at MHL at Wikipedia. Just a little sniplet ...
MHL is connection agnostic (i.e., not tied to a specific type of hardware connector). The first implementations dual-purpose the most popular mobile connection (micro USB) and the most popular HDTV connection (HDMI). Other than the connectors being used, no USB nor HDMI technology is being used. It is exclusively MHL signalling through the connectors and over the cable. Other proprietary and custom connections are also allowed.

So I just got my Galaxy Nexus from ebay. Only problem is that the seller sent the phone with a black berry usb cable. Can I still use this cable to root it, unlock bootloader, etc?
USB cable is USB cable. If you plug it in and its recognized by the PC, you can use it.
My GNex doesn't even like the cable that came with my DX. I can charge from the wall with it, but nothing happens if I try to USB with it.
I would recommend getting a "real" cable.

Nope, high chance that a cable that old is worn out or defective. But saying that a BlackBerry cable isn't a "real cable" is hilarious.
I've had absolutely no issue using several HTC cables, HP Touchpad cable, or even the USB cable from my Logitech mouse to connect my phone to a PC or charge.
Ok, I see what happened here. When I put real in quotes, I did not mean that the BB cable was junk, or that BB hardware (doubt they manufactured the cable though) is junk.
I should have said that I recommend getting the factory cable that comes with the GNex. That IS what any manufacturer recommends anyway.
Not sure how the old cable could be worn out though, because It works just fine for USB with the DX.

Charging uses fewer wires in the cable than data uses.

If this is true, then it means not all micro USB cables for our phones are created equal.
It would also lend credence to my suggestion to get the factory cable.

If you have any doubts about how the cables are wired, google: usb cable wiring.
It's just four wires and plugs at either end. Not very complicated.
Hi, as you might already know that the in box charging cable is pretty short in length, so I need an alternative, a lengthier cable. I was wondering if I buy one of those cheap MicroUSB to USB cable and connect it with the charger would that harm my device? What you guys say?
Thanks in advance.

Yes - I use my kindle cable with an HTC charger and that works fine
Of own experience and I say no. Mine old usb cable that worked fine with Note 1, didnt worked with Note 2, when I plugged it in mine computer and it didnt recognized the phone. Why do Samsung have to copy everyhting Apple do? They changed the Lightning cable and Samsung changed god damn theirs microusb.

I've used el cheapo USB cables off of eBay with all my Android phones and have never had problems. A few cables have been dead on arrival but they're so cheap, I usually buy like 5 at a time anyways.
Of course, if you want to be absolutely super sure that the cable won't do any damage, you should buy official cables. But I see that as insanity, I'm not paying 19,90€ for a cable that I can get for €0,99 minus the Samsung logo. I just will not do that.
does the USB OTG HOST ADAPTER works for PEN DRIVE in note 2 (N7100)
Ah, of course it does (I use it with mine often). Why wouldn't it?
Yes it does..... but make sure to pick right cable as there are 2 kinds of cables in market one is for tablets and other one is for the phones. pick the phone one obviously

OTG is OTG, there's no difference between a tablet or phone one, it's the same wiring..
Good grief, the baloney some people come out with...
Whether the cable you have works or not depends on the quality of the cable. Pay pennies for it, and I'd be amazed if it worked with ANYthing. The cable I have is branded and comes from a reputable retailer. Works perfectly on all devices I've tried it on, including my N2.

I bought it from a local branch of Maplins, a UK retailer that specialises in components and cables etc. So that's zero use to you.
Like I said, OTG is OTG. Buy a decent quality cable from a reputable dealer rather than el cheapo garbage from eBay and you'll be fine.
