Part swap? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

My gnex has a broken screen and is a GSM that I'm using on t mo. What I want to know is if I buy a Verizon version with a bad esn would the screen on the cdma version work on the GSM one.
Also a bonus question would I be able to put the 32 gb memory in the GSM version.

Possibly... but the phones are definitely not built the exact same (just take the battery cover off and you'll see). So I'd need someone with more technical knowledge of the differences to chime in.
Depending on how much you're paying for that you might be better off selling yours for parts and buying a new one since they're only $399 now.

Definitely no.

They definitely have some differences in parts. When I had an issue with one of my GSM versions I remember looking up tear downs for both and they were a lot more differences that I originally thought. I'd be very cautious attempting to put a part from the cdma variant into GSM until you're 100% sure it'll work. Hopefully someone here can confirm.

[Q] 32GB HSPA+ Version

I tried to see if this was asked already. Mods, please delete if so.
After reading/watching The Verge review, it is mentioned that the HSPA+ version will only come in a 16GB option. Does anyone know if this is true? I'm sure, like me, a lot of people here were planning to get a 32GB HSPA+ version. Thanks.
i'll only get the 32GB version, there's no point getting the 16GB version
and yes we need GSM HSPA+ for Tmo/ATT

i think The Verge may be getting confused...since the UK is the only place that has the phone at the moment, and it's already been confirmed that the UK is only getting the 16GB version, they may be taking that as being a blanket designation for all the HSPA+ handsets.
The japanese NTT Docomo advert quite clearly states that it is available in 16GB & 32GB capacities.
We really don't know right now. Indicators are that the UK HSPA+ version is 16 and the US LTE version is 32, but that's just because we really don't know too much more than that right now...
And that is a big reason why the launch of this reeks. No details.
I invented cyberspace. You're trespassing.

Yup, I agree. This is getting really annoying.
the *****ing and moaning would be a lot more tolerable if say google said something like the unlocked gsm/hspa+ version would be available unlocked in the usa like january 3 or something. something to look forward to at least. we'd still whine 'why the hell give verizon exclusivity?' and such but again at least we'd have something to look forward to.

Just looked on google.com/nexus... I am disappointed.
When you select United States at the bottom and go to the tech specs, under data it says CDMA/LTE; however, when you select United Kingdom, under data it says 3G/EDGE/GPRS.
I'm beginning to think that in the US there will be only a LTE/Verizon nexus
i think the only 32gb nexus will be the thicker verizon unit... i could be wrong. but if you have seen any other evidence of a gsm 32gb variant ..please point it out. i have seen nothing

Samsung on FB said the UK will only get the 16GB "initially" .. meaning there is a 32GB GSM, it just won't hit until...Dec/Jan? My guess is around the time (or exactly when) the GSM Nexus comes to the US.

It wasn't an interpretation Samsung literally used the word "initially" in their reply on Facebook.
Im holidaying in the US of A near the end of December, will it be possible for me to buy a 32gig 3g/gsm/hsdpa etc etc model of the Galaxy Nexus unlocked anywhere??? Its either I wait to get it when im there or I can just buy a Galaxy Note model now..
This is a bit ridiculous of google having all this advertising, pretty looking girls smiling into the camera using the phone etc and having absolutely no info on where/when/what (32gig GSM or only 16g??)
Dont advertise until ALL the details are available, it just pisses off people who want one!
(and why must Samsung always leave out one bit from each phone, no galaxy notes with nfc available yet? and nexus with no sdcard if the note had nfc/ics i'd get it now instead of the nexus)
Interesting to see that the UK Galaxy nexus page shows tech specs of 32 gb.
As long a 32 gb hspa+ is release, either in UK or US, i don't care. The phone is pentaband.....

There is no indication whatsoever that Google will sell an unlocked GSM version in the US. The only info we have now is the CDMA/LTE Verizon version for the states.

I don't want to get it months later though
Handtec has a listing for the 32GB GSM model, and predicts an after New Years launch. When asked if they know for sure, they said Samsung hasn't told them anything
best guess it'll be sometimes in March 2012 before you see it's appearance for the 32GB GSM version

No idea what bad ESN means but you can't use a Verizon Nexus on T-Mobiles network. CDMA phone on a GSM network will not work.
No, pretty sure you hot confused by the penta-band part.
That's just for GSM frequencies.
The Verizon gnex is a different model number too, its the i515 and the GSM is the i9250.
I'm not 100% certain it won't work but I'm 99% certain.
Maybe someone else can second that for me.
Can you sell it on again?
EDIT: I see someone already posted and verified it before I posted this! Me derpsta!
Yes a verizon cdma phone will not work on a T-mobile gsm network. They are completely different networks. Now you may be able to flash the phone to work on another cdma carrier like boost or metro pcs. You would need to buy a european gsm version of the galaxy nexus to use it on t-mobile.

Not to pour salt on your wounds or anything, but here in Canada, BNIB Galaxy Nexuses are ~$450. $300 seems a bit high for such a fatal defect in the phone. Maybe this is Canadian pricing as all of our carriers sell the phone.
Hope you can somehow get some money back for it.

You'll be lucky if you can resell it for $200-$250 with a bad ESN.

Yeah, there are a lot of them. Besides several different Blackberries, off the top of my head, I know that Verizon has had the Touch Pro 2, Droid 2 Global, Droid Pro, Droid 3, Droid Incredible 2, and the iPhone 4S. I know Sprint has also had several CDMA/GSM devices as well.
I really wish Verizon's Galaxy Nexus had been a world phone with GSM capabilities, but it's not. Then it would be absolutely perfect for me. But up until this point, Verizon hasn't released a LTE phone that also has a functioning GSM radio for global use. Some of them (Droid Bionic, Droid Razr) have a GSM radio (one of those CDMA/GSM combo chips), but the GSM portion doesn't actually function. There were some rumors awhile back that the GSM capabilities might possibly be enabled later, but I never saw where things went beyond rumor.
Don't you people know better to ask your questions here first before spending your money?
At least the seller was up front about the bad ESN. Now wonder if he was the one who stole the device, lol.

Probably covered already... but no, this will not work. Ever. You bought a paperweight. Could've bought a GSM model for $100-$150 more.
Its amazing that you didn't research before buying, and you spent $300 on a bad ESN phone w/o a plan on what to do with it. A simple 5 minutes on Google would have given you the answer.

they're the same phone but may ship with different variants,

NTT Docomo's version is carrier locked to NTT Docomo. You can fix this by unlocking it.
T-Mobile doesn't need your IMEI. But I don't know what T-Zone is.... I just popped in my SIM card and the phone works with my T-Mobile plan.
The non-Docomo version on Negri is cheaper,

http://www.expansys-usa.com/google-nexus-prime-android-smartphone-unlocked-16gb-224148/ $409 (even cheaper)
play store: $399 but you have to pay taxes is what im told.

I bought mine brand new on ebay. The seller happened to be in US but they are usually sold by Canadian ebayers. Not many people know about it. Unlocked ver is lil more expensive. When u go on ebay, Try 's ii x' in search field then choose cell phones under categories tab on the left side.
Some times, it is found on t989 Unlocked version section. Or u could try ebay.ca(canadian ebay) and then search the phone and then narrow it down to if the seller is shipping to US or not.
I recommend g nexus because price has dropped alot and u can also get us warranty now. I also really like aosp.
Of coaese I am happy with gsiix as u literally experience no lag due to high processor speed and RAM.
As for s ii x it is exactly same as tmobiles g s 2 wihout tmobile logo and they wont make u get android plans. Wifi calling works on s ii x but u will need new tmobile
Sim card version TM9177 just as all other tmobile gs2 users. I tried the sim card to use wifi calling and it worked great. I hope this helps.
Edit: I would wait a little as g s 3 is about to be released. Price for GN and SIIX will likely drop.
HTC sensation xe z715e could be a better choice if u can get one new under 400 and I dont think it uses dual channel hspa+ like the previous two. I could be wrong so u might want to confirm that.
Sent from my Galaxy S 2 X
One more thing that I would like to mention is that HSPA+ can be picky for both gnex and gsiix for ur tzone. depending on ur location. This is different from hsdpa of nexus one, nexus s or hd2 etc. If you are concerned with rather have consistent and good 3g plus connection and if u r on the move alot then I recommend nexus s. If you have to have WiFi calling and good 3g plus connection then I recommend a HD2 but it has to be second revision. Otherwise your digitizer will fail sooner or later.
I ve tried it in mostly eastern part of major US cities. Charlotte, Atlanta, NYC and Boston. I came to this conclusion based on my personal testing and experience so I have no data to back up my cliams. I am just sharing it cuz it might be useful to others.

[Q] galaxy nexus 16GB & 4G LTE difference

hi everyone
so, I was watching a review of Galaxy Nexus because I'm gonna buy one,
& I crossed over this only in Cnet's review, they said 16 GB one is unlocked, & also the 4G one is thicker as they showed.
now my question is if I buy the 32 one, can I unlock it later? myself?
& also if it's true 16GB is thinner, how thin is it in hand? because I already took one 32GB in hand & it was not that bad to take in hand
Unlock it to use on a GSM network? No (at least not as far as I know), the internal hardware in Toro (32GB version) is different than that in Maguro (16GB version).
The thickness isn't really too noticeable for me, depending on what phone you are coming from you probably won't notice a huge difference when held compared to the Toro model, It has a nice quality feel no matter which one you choose.
I hope this helps!
The 4G is used on CDMA, there's not point in unlocking it as you couldn't use it on another CDMA carrier's 4G (such as Sprint).
The 16 GB is GSM, not CDMA. So depending on what network you plan on using it on, that should dictate which one to use.
Since I'm on Tmo, the GSM is the one for me.

Well actually, some GSM 32 GB WERE sold a LONG time ago, near launch. Samsung quickly discontinued this model however, and made it a CDMA exclusive for some reasons (only reason I envy my gfs Sprint Gnex).
Anyways, I've seen a few sell on eBay, but as far as everyone knows, they stopped making them, and I don't see why they'd start selling them exclusively there. Maybe a misprint?

No, the only change would be the 32 vs 16 gb storage. All GSM are maguro models.

I got too tired of waiting for perm root/bootloader unlock soooo.....

I got a nexus 6. Traded it for my Note 4, plus the guy gave me 50 bucks. So that sweetened the deal for me. Overall I'm very happy with the trade, especially because I have an unlocked bootloader and can put any rom I want on it. So happy beyond belief. I'm sorry to anyone still stuck on their ATT note 4. It was pure boredom for me. Wish everyone on this forum luck, and it was fun while it lasted with you guys!

I feel l ya.
Personally, I won't own a Nexus. I need a top notch camera, and it just falls short.
But between the Note 5 lacking expandable memory, I have chosen to go with the LV V10 (when released) as my next phone, even though I love the Note line. And, of course, AT&T will not ever be in my carrier line again.
This video had some pretty nifty tips to address the battery and expandable memory issues in the note 5 - https://youtu.be/lFyZ5YyAsk4..
Everyone carries a battery pack anyway and I've personally not replaced the battery on note 4 since I bought it last year..

I'm happy for you. Personally I will never buy another Samsung phone again from AT&T. If they want government contracts that much then go right ahead. I'm going to definitely get new LG V10 when it comes out but hoping that the bootloader isn't locked and that I can at least put in a 128gb micr sd memory card. With Samsung doing what they did to make the S6 more like the Note series it's safe to say that the Galaxy Note series is officially dead. It's crazy how Samsung sacrificed their best selling line of phones for another line of phones that fail every year in sales and customer satisfaction. You would have thought that the Galaxy Note series would've became Samsung's new flagship phone. Wish I still had my Note 3 cause it was rooted but I'm stuck now with the Note 4. LG V10 or an iPhone cause those are my only options.

This video had some pretty nifty tips to address the battery and expandable memory issues in the note 5 - https://youtu.be/lFyZ5YyAsk4..
Everyone carries a battery pack anyway and I've personally not replaced the battery on note 4 since I bought it last year..

Couple things.
First, placing your pictures in Google, according to their policy you agree to when you use it, allows them to use any of those pictures for advertisement of their products or services. And they can do so without your permission, since you agree to it by using them to store your pics. Frankly, I'm not too keen on that one.
Also, since I listen to a lot of music, but get songs from different sources, Google Music is not an option since you can't listen to songs through them that was not purchased through them.
Music & pictures/camera are my primary concerns when buying a new phone, and I use a lot of space for them. On my Note 4, I've got a 128gb card with a 32gb phone, and I'm down to 12 gigs on the card and 6 on the phone. But personally, I love having everything I want at my fingertips without using external storage or needing to be around a signal.

I'm a die hard Google music user. I uploaded my entire music collection to Google. Over 100 gigs total. None of it was purchased through google. I stream it every day from their app without problems.

With 5.1.1 the note 4 is a brand new phone ?, i am actually liking the phone and functionality. It's smooth and just feels good to use. If you haven't updated you need to, update to the 5.1.1 on att totally worth the trouble.

So, Im with you guys on this... I CANNOT use an unrooted phone. Problem is, I also MUST have a stylus with pin point precision... Can anyone help me out bc I cant find a single device (NO APPLE) that has one besides the note line! I would go back to my Note 2 if the screen wassnt smashed... Are their ANY options for my needs? TIA!
Find a t-mobile version of the Note 4, unlock it and use it on AT&T. It's rootable and flashable.

Looking at the specs for both, it looks like they're MOSTLY identical...except that AT&T and T-Mo have most, but not all, of the same frequencies for UMTS and LTE bands. Everything seems the same, except:
AT&T
UMTS 900 (Band 8)LTE 2600 (Band 7)T-Mobile
UMTS 1700/2100 (Band 4)LTE 900 (Band 8)LTE 1800 (Band 3)
Are the frequencies that AT&T and T-Mo share, those frequencies that they both use most commonly, and the above frequencies are mostly just for increasing available bandwidth for their respective networks? Or is it possible that either of them might use only the above bands, in some areas?
I have no idea about frequency stuff. All I know is that I've read on here about people getting the t-mobile version specifically because the AT&T version is not rootable.
Frequencies Matter

Yes, the frequencies between AT&T and T-Mobile are different and do matter when it comes to data. You will not be able to get access to all towers LTE tech unless the phone has the proper hardware in it. It will limit your 4G usage but you could at least have a rooted phone. You kind of have to pick your poison in that regards.

I hope the other guy sees this, then. I'm not in the market to swap phones. I'm fine on my stock AT&T note 4. This makes sense, though.

Actually, from what I could tell, if pdadb.net and wikipedia have their respective info correct (and current), the only frequencies the T-Mobile version doesn't have, that the AT&T version has, are frequencies that aren't even used by any U.S. carriers. According to pdadb.net, the frequencies the AT&T version can use, that aren't available on the T-Mobile Note 4 are UMTS 900 (Band 8), and LTE 2600 (Band 7). According to this Wikipedia article, the LTE2600 band isn't in use anywhere in the US. It's used in Canada, but I don't anticipate visiting there, or anywhere else outside of the US, any time soon. (There's another article that shows similar info about the UMTS900 band, but that's even less relevant.)
So, it looks like I'm looking for a T-Mobile Note 4, if I can find one for cheap, that's not too scratched up, or anything.
I just gave up on my att note 4. Switched to the T-mobile version.

Gave my wife the Note 4 cause she broke her Lg G Pro. Had to use my Nexus 4 for a week. I kind of like the small form factor. Any ways..picked up a Lg G3 off ebay for $150 bucks like new. Enjoying custom roms!
