Wow is all I can say...I bought the focus and the UI blew me away as soon as I turned it on, I bought the focus. I have used all the mobile OS and this by far is the most sleek, easy to use, and just plain nice of all, I don't miss c&p bug I do miss multitasking in apps like last.fm, I can still send it back and get something else, but what's better then this? I'm typing this from wp7 now and man this keyboard is awesome, the level of little details they put into wp7 is crazy, gotta say I'm really impressed here, I'm sticking with this for a while to see where this goes, hopefully MS stays true to their word and keeps on supporting with updates, as for apps, I've come to realize that I don't need a million apps, I only use like 20 anyway, but it seems to be growing fast anyway. All in all super impressed with wp7,9/10 from me and if this keeps getting better, I don't see myself going back to anything else.
Yea I played with the Focus today at the AT&T(worst wireless carrier in the universe) store and I love the UI and how smooth the OS is. I'm currently on Evo 4G, but I'm considering WP7 once it comes to Sprint. I previously had the iPhone 3GS and WP7 user experience is very comparable with iOS. While I like Android the lack of GPU acceleration is a huge issue, until that's implemented the user experience will never compare to iOS and WP7. I'm holding out for the January update to see if MS adds free turn by turn navigation, better landscape support(what idiot decided that you can't input a URL in landscape mode?), flash and copy and paste.
Is there a list of wp7 problems or missing features? Cause it seems like I'm missing very little atm.

though i'm happy with my phone.
Believe it Or not I am very tempted to get an n8 as well, saw it in person and wow, what excellent hardware!! And it does all those little things like mass storage etc. Anyone here have an n8?
N8, looks great. But lacks balls and has a very crappy OS. Know of two friends whom have returned them. Due to bad reception and a buggy slow OS playing up..
Go Android or if you must iPh or W7 if you want all that exchange compatibility with MS apps etc at work.
That's where it is at...

solidkevin: The windows phone might have some small problems but that nothing compared to the N8. I only hear bad stories from people that have that phone.

Symbian has way better Exchange functionality than Windows Phone 7. WP7 may not be thoroughly suitable for serious business use until Q3/Q4 2011. It's not the device/OS to get if you want great Exchange support. An HD2 or Blackberry Torch would be optimal for business use (assuming you like Touchscreens, otherwise a Bold would do).
There is no comparison between WM6.5/Symbian and WP7 when it comes to Exchange support. WP7's support is actually kind of embarassing considering it comes from Microsoft, TBQH. It's better than Android at least, and maybe on par with iOS, or perhaps a little worse than Apple, even - at the moment, at least.
Yes, the N8 isn't the best device, but it works well. Nokia will be patching Symbian the same way MS will be patching WP7. If you can deal with Windows Phone 7 and its functionality gaps, etc. then I don't see why anyone can simply discount an N8 when it's not out of the realm of possibility that it too can/will benefit from updates from Nokia.
Symbian also supports the ActiveSync Protocol, more Media formats, more DRM formats (including Windows Media DRM for syncing ZunePass subscription content to the phone).
The worse thing about Symbian is the user interface and the Screen Resolution of their touchscreen phones (what an odd choice of resolution, IMO).
I'm not even gonna continue. I've gotten my point across by now, hopefully.
The Samsung Focus is available for 79 bucks on contract at the local Wal-Mart here. The 8GB storage is a showstopper, though. I'm not playing SD Roulette with a phone. 16GB is the bare minimum I can put up with. The build quality isn't all that great. The back cover pulls off like a cheap hooker's bra.
TBQH, the only WP7 device I feel is worth buying is the Dell Venue Pro. Fortunately it's on T-Mobile and I get Corporate Discounts from Dell, so I'm sort of thinking about it. It's a shame the HD7 has such terrible build quality with such a bad LCD on it... Thoroughly pissed me off...
But I'm going to wait until CES. Maybe an Android device from a decent manufacturer will come out and I will stick it out here.
Judging from what Microsoft is saying, it's gonna take them a year to really get WP7 functionality up to par and judging form my experience with this phone... I simply don't have the patience for that...
I also want to see if RIM will come out with a decent Touchscreen phone soon with a more refined/better OS on it, as well. We'll see at CES. I'm holding off all purchases until then.
Well while I AM enjoying the focus at the moment, I am waiting for CES as well, I want to see what everyone offers as far as Android and Hopefully Nokia shows what it plans to do with Symbian because if it gets a revamp, I may have to get the N8, I will have a lot of money to spend, because I sold the extra focus I had (buy one get one free ATT), so If I want something else I can sell this one as well. But yea hopefully theres some interesting things at CES, really just Android and Symbian are what interest me though.

Isn't it just Nokia now who are actively developing Symbian?
Symbian will be ditched to midend and Meego or however it's called will be used as highend platform. Known for months.
Symbian development is over for me. Nokia has a reeeaally hard time to give really competitive hardwarwe. I would forget it.
And yes, only Nokia does Symbian. All of the rest kicked it out, significant move.

Good post. You made some valid points, but I got the impression that you believe MS dropped the ball with WP7, and I don't believe that to be a true..or even fair assessment.
It is the nature of version 1.0 of just about anything to be incomplete..to be a work in progress. In regards to smart phone OS's, its always been that way. iOS v1.0 was very limited, as was Android 1.0, and so on so forth. I was an early adopter of both platforms and was at times frustrated by the limitations. But, as an early adopter I understood that this was the way it usually is, and that things would gradually flesh out.
For me, iOS never did "flesh out" enough. I've always loved the smoothness and general quality of iOS and the iPhone, but I found myself bored by it. Android did grow and develop quickly enough to keep me engaged, and I still enjoy the control I have when using Android...and also enjoy that the relatively open nature of it allows be to constantly tinker with my device. But, even though I usually enjoy doing so, the main reason I'm always tinkering with my Android devices is because I've never been satisfied with how they felt. I hate the apparently inherent choppiness and occasional lag of Android, and my main motivation for rooting my Android devices had always been to try to get rid that.
Somewhere between those 2 extremes lies WP7. Yes, in some regards it is limited. But, I can accept this for now because, as I mentioned earlier it is v1.0 and I know these limitations are being worked on as we speak. Many people are refusing to accept that, though...and it seems that you're one of them.
The gist of the argument seems to be that MS came late to the party, so they had already known what the dress code was, and shouldve showed up fully decked out. That they shouldn't have released v1.0 until it matched its contemporaries feature for feature. I disagree with this. I think MS was right in getting a v1.0 that provided the basic user experience that they were aiming for out there as soon as was possible. Did this strategy suddenly propel WP7 to the top of the smart phone world? No, not even close. But it has managed to grab just about everyone's attention...and has solidified it's position as a viable player. I believe that is all MS wanted to accomplish by rushing to release v1.0 just before the holiday season...and I also believe that it was better for them to do so than for them to sit out until after the holidays.
I am convinced that WP7 v1.0 is the best 1.0 smart phone OS released to date. I think that MS got the basics incredibly right...and that the limitations are going to begin to be addressed very soon. Yes, MS was late to the party, but they've shown up with more style than anyone else, if not with as much substance...and they are moving much faster than both Google and Apple did to provide said substance. WP7 is a joy to interact with. It is beautiful. It's fun. So much so, that despite the current limitations, I choose to use my HD7 as my daily driver...and to leave my Android phones at home.
WP7 is in many ways very good right now, and it has an extremely bright future. I can understand that some of you don't have the patience to wait for WP7 to catch up in the few areas that it's lacking in, but such patience is a prerequisite of being a happy early adopter. If you can't enjoy experiencing the growth process of a new platform, then maybe being an early adopter isn't for you. But, please people, don't make it seem like MS blew it in regards to WP7, because that couldn't be further from the truth.
Oh, one last thing. How in the world does the HD7 have horrible build quality?? Yes, as you tilt the phone away from the optimal viewing angle, the colors somewhat fade. It is not an AMOLED screen and the black levels pale in comparison..quite literally. But, when I use my phone, I tend to keep it within the optimal viewing angles...and within those parameters, the HD7's screen displays good and VERY natural colors..unlike the overwhelmingly oversaturated colors that my Galaxy S displays...and without any banding.
Also, I love the 4.3" screen. Those extra .3" make a real difference. Do I prefer the outrageously deep blacks and the incredibly effective viewing angles of the Super AMOLED screen? Yes, if course. But, I prefer my HD7's spacious, natural looking screen in every other way.
Outside of the screen though, I don't see how anyone can critize it's quality. I've owned MANY top of the line mobile devices, and none have felt better in the hand than the HD7. It looks good and feels good because HD7 uses high quality materials..unlike Samsung. People complain about the thinness of the back cover. It is just as thin..or thick, as the one on the Evo...and I don't see anyone criticizing it's quality. Despite being thin, it feels great when attached to the phone. The soft touch surface is great.
I'm also aware of the complaints about a relatively large gap between the removable and fixed portions if the back of the phone. I found this to be an optical illusion caused by the unfortunate location of the white sim card right where it's partially visible through the gap. But, I found an easy fix. I pulled my SIM card and colored the upper third of it with a black sharpie. Guess what...after that, the so called huge gap magically disappeared. The gap itself is no larger than on most phones. The location of the sim card was the problem. It looks great after taking a sharpie to it.
I can't reply to all the parts of that. Will take too long.
The build quality of the HD7 is terrible compared to the Dell Venue Pro. HTC was never known for having superior build quality. The HD2 was pretty good, though. Don't know why they paid so little attention to the HD7...
The HD7 has basically the same LCD panel from the Evo and/or HD2. It's not a good panel. It has bad color saturation and terrible viewing angles. It's also overly reflective. Size can only make up for so much, but you can get a Dell Venur Pro 16GB on contract for $50 less than an HD7 and the screen is only 0.2" smaller. The HD7 is a pretty bad phone by current standards. They used parts from last year to build a phone this year, and it's pretty apparent if you look at it next to other WP7 devices.
You can harp on the oversaturation in sAMOLED panels, but the fact and the matter is that it blows this crappy HD7 panel out of the water in almost any category. Viewing Angles, Brightness, Color Representation, etc. It's a bad screen. You can't make excuses for that... It almost looks foggy compared to an AMOLED panel (even something like the MyTouch 4G screen is obviously better).
Also, it has a smaller battery than some Blackberry Curve smartphones. 1150 mAh... Seriously? Anyone who uses their phone moderately will not be able to get good battery life out of that. It may be fine for YOU, at least now, especially with no third-party multi-tasking (this also makes WP7 perform artificially better compared to competing products - it only has to do one task at a time), but once that update comes and you're running 3-4 apps concurrently it will nosedize. All reviews has been pretty negative on the small battery in the phone.
The camera also isn't anything to rave about.
The materials used to build the phone are pretty dubious.
Build quality means the hardware build quality. It has nothing to do with the software.
Moving on to the software (WP7). Yes, they dropped the ball. They missed an opportunity to get a ton of frustrated Nokia and RIM users, as well as pick off more Android/iOS users when they decided to rush the OS out 6-12 months early with entire classes of functinality missing.
WP7 fails as a business phone right now, and Microsoft saying they're focusing on consumers is nothing short of an excuse. They said it will take almost a year to bake the business into the phone, so obviously that was in the roadmap. What they did was rush it out to try to save face while they "finished' the job. Coming from Android and Windows Mobile, some people are tired waiting on Manufacturers, etc. to "finish the job" while they sit there with a down syndrome phone saying "look how smooth it is, it's worth it!"
No HTML5 in the browser. No multi-tasking, C&P, embarassing Exchange Policy Support for a Microsoft OS, a user interface that in several areas looks like only 5 minutes was dedicated to design (Calendar, Dialer, etc.), lack of Flash (oand/r Silverlight), etc. Even blackberries have an HTML browser, now Not to mention WP7 didn't evne attempt to really exploit the enhancements made in Microsoft Exchange to convince business users to use it instead of RIM/Nokie/WM6.5 devices...
If you read my posts in this thread, you can clearly see that I'm not some Anti-WP7 fanboi.
But I think some people are making this OS to be way better than it actually is.
It really isn't revolutionary in any way, and falls on it face in many areas given what competing products can do and [rightfully] assuming competing products will improve as well.
The only thing that's really good about WP7 is the fact that it doubles up as a ZuneHD.
But a ZuneHD is cheaper than a whole smartphone and at this point in time it's almost worth buying an Andriod/iOS device and carrying a (much smaller) ZuneHD around than buying a WP7 device.
The hardware isn't all that good right now (will probably make a lot of "early adopters" mad at CES), and the manufacturers are paying little attention to what they're putting out.
If the Dell Venue Pro was in T-Mobile stores they would hardly sell any HD7s.
Sorry, gotta disagree about the dvp. It has already been recalled twice due to issues. How can you be confident that you will get 2 years out of it?
Coming from the hd2, the hd7 screen is fine. Maybe coming from a vibrant, its an issue, but I have seen more complaints about oversaturation and color banding of the focus screen then I have of the "washed out" look of the hd7.
I was a little worried about the back of the hd7, coming from the brushed aluminum back of the hd2, but since I'm not having to constantly pop the back to reset the phone, the back is no longer a worry and the texture is nice.
I've owned 4 HTC devices and overall the phones have been great. The best of them all (the hd2), is the only one that I had to replace due to failure. I consider that pretty good.
Maybe some early adopters will be frustrated by CES, but I doubt it. There haven't been many leaks of newer wp7 devices on the horizon. I think it might be fall before the next Gen wp7 devices hit, a full year after the hd7, which is about normal for new devices.

So now after fighting with everybody and proving WP7 is the best,
you say it basically sucks?
Hard to believe.
And apparently you don't have WP7 device?
It's all well and good comparing feature lists, but really when you are talking about a smart mobile phone, it comes down to usability.
I put up with the quirks of WM5, 6.1 and 6.5 for a few years. While it did technically have a lot of features, it was slow and a pain in the ass to use. And if anyone not familiar with the phone used it they were immediately lost.
Now I'm using WP7 (HD7) since October and it just works. It's fast and everything is intuitive and makes sense. And oddly enough I am only very rarely missing some advanced features. For example, I thought I'd be crippled without tethering, but as it turns out I am using my laptop via tethering much less when I'm travelling because the mobile browser and mobile apps on WP7 are so much better than any previous mobile browsers I'd used, so I'm more likely to use it rather than just getting frustrated and dragging out the laptop to use the "proper" browser. The great WP7 keyboard has a lot to do with this.
And if I lend my phone to someone else so they can make a call or check their email or whatever, they can use it! WP7 passes the idiot test! I would actually get this phone for my father!
A few days ago I met a techy friend who's a nokia die-hard, he had just purchased the N8. We swapped phones for half an hour to test them out, and the look on his face afterwards was proof enough that MS is on to something. My initial impression of the N8 software was that Nokia hasn't changed their OS since 1999. There was an impressive list of features for sure, if you could find them, as the menu system and shortcuts confused the hell out of me. And fonts were tiny everywhere. Maybe I'm just spoiled by WP7 now, but the experience of using the N8 was dreadful.
TLDR; You can compare a list of features as much as you like to see which is best; but you have to experience it to appreciate it. And WP7 seems to have the edge in this regard at the moment, even above iOS and Android.

"over saturation and color banding", I have no idea what you are talking about. I have had the focus for a week now and the screen is amazing. I don't even use my laptop any longer, just IE on the Focus. I was an HTC advocate for years (8125, 8525, FUZE) and switched to the Focus after careful consideration and will never look back. I have heard these criticisms of the screen and quite frankly don't see any of it. Am I just lucky? I have been to three ATT stores and played with 3 different Focus's before buying and did not experience these screen issues.

the reviews I've read, had the screen as the "worst" of the wp7 phones, but due to bigger color range of wp7, the screen looked better than the hd2. Being the worst of the wp7 phones, is like saying the worst between a lcd, a plasma, and a dlp t.v. They are all perfectly acceptable, some people like lcd, some like plasma, I like dlp because it looks better for sports.
As far as the dvp begin better than the hd7, what are you basing this on? Hardly anyone has been able to get their hands on one. You can't go to a store and try it out since its only coming through dell and MS.
HD7 has a bigger screen, and more RAM.
Hell, even engadget can't get a review out because their demo units keep breaking...
We get it, you hate the hd7, but I don't think the dvp is any better.

So, for the first time since I got my WP7 devices I had to reset them. It seemed to be related to the new zune software they handed out because after plugging it in and syncing my phone would not let the music bar at the top disappear. After a reset it was gone and it hasn't come back since. I got the HD7 2 days after it came out and now own every US based WP7 device and this is my first reset. I think that speaks testaments about an OS.

Beyond that issue, how is the Focus? I will be going over to AT&T in the next month when my T-Mobile contract is up and I have a boatload of options to consider. I'm looking at all of them. If you had to choose just one...the HD7 or the Focus...which would you rather have?

You really need to get both of them in your hands and play with them for a while. We all have our opinions. I played with the HTC Surround, LG and Focus. I went with the focus. I liked the large and brilliant screen, the fit in my hand and have liked it more everyday. The darn thing just works, I have been able to find the apps I like and no resets after a month and a half. The things that I find bothersome are the issues with the SD card (I haven't had them yet, (added a 16GB Class 2 DanDisk, the lack of Flash support in WP7, and the lack of customized ringtones. Other than that, C&P, multi-tasking etc. are non-issues for me.

So that's a good thing?
I have my device (LG E900) for almost 2 months.
The device rebooted itself only once.
However as quoted before, WP7 definitely has to be regularly rebooted just like WM6.5.
Besides volume bug caused by Games interference with Zune playback (reboot required),
WP7 has problem with handling connection issues, leading to regular problems with Marketplace crash/freeze and Weatherchannel too.
These problems can be solved only by reboot. And are IMO mainly connection related, at least most of the time. This is very unreliable, I mean I don't see a reason why app closed by Windows key freezes in the state of "trying". No other application behaves this way and never refused to work even after many internet errors.
I'm not talking about coverage or bad signal but rather indoor/outdoor changes.
As I stated in my case it's like reboot every 2, 3 days.

if WP7 had a task manager these could be avoided by just killing tasks like in Android and WM6.5, they need to incorporate that into an update.

Focus/Omnia are pretty much the master race when it comes to WP7 phones. The Focus specifically is probably the best of them all. It's the lightest, thinnest, has the best battery life, and is, for some reason, faster than other WP7 phones due to how it handles storage. Much better screens, too, whereas the HTC screens look like cheap LCD tech. The only thing I'm jealous of is the HTC Hub.

What's your definition of "frequently?" I can go 5-6 days easily on 6.5 without rebooting, and tons of uptime. This may have more to do with you than the OS.

that's a good point, I can go a week on my NRG ROM, and on my current CM6.1 ROM, and I have gone quite a few days on WP7 ROM too
Focus is second only to venue pro (8 gig model with a 32 gig card) the only complaints i have with it are how light it is (I dropped it in a theatre and never knew) and the bluish screen.... the tech is awesome and having access to the sd card without a void is great.HD7 is pretty much the HD2 running wp7 except less resets and stuff...
If you get resets on a WP7 HD2 it may be because the OS isnt native.

Well as for WM6.5 my situation was not representative because of faulty device - SE X2.
Maybe more representative thing would be X1 on 6.1, which could go even 10 days or so without any problem.
Anyway my point was that effectively I can rarely run WP7 for a week without a reboot what is not good. I mean it's also not such a terrible thing for workflow because the reboot is nicely fast, but still - not good for the platform.

Ok, thanks. What's normal for other devices, like an iphone or an android phone? I've never used one, and have no idea. Personally, I think resetting once a day isn't that big of a deal, but it is a big deal if the device freezes a lot. My fuze froze probably 5 times a day when I first got it on the stock ATT rom. I'm sure some of that was my fault, but the rom was total crap and deserved most of the blame.

I checked out the Focus today and it is a gorgeous phone, but so is the HD7. I normally keep mine in a chrome hard case and never take it out. But after looking at the Focus, feeling it build and weight, I pulled my HD7 out of the case and held it. I remembered why I chose it over all the other WP7 devices. Just an outstandingly gorgeous phone and feels so solid and substantial in the hand. I'd still love to have a Focus, but I like the HD7 better.
There are a lot of option with AT&T and I might just go with a netbook, instead, and use my two phones, HD2 and HD7 and be content with them. Also, as far as I'm concerned, the HD7 is just as thin as the Focus...the body of it, excluding the camera bulge.

Love the phone, not big on the screen. Then again I dont like samoled much either. I think amoled is about perfect and I love having a hardware keyboard. XBL hasnt released a good game in a couple weeks... not since iblast moki... I'm getting withdrawals and beating my wife at alphajax is getting almost sad.

I love the LCD of my HD2 and HD7. Whenever I watch videos on it, I continue to be impressed. I suggest observing the HD7 LCD after your eyes have acclimated away from the extreme colors of SAMOLED. As with anything, the human body adjusts itself to intensities to level them out. In other words, we become accustomed to things we constantly use. It's no different between the eyes adjusting to a low-light indoor condition coming from a super bright sunny day outside.
Hi folks,
Noob here - I'm currently running a Tilt2 with an Energy rom, and am pretty happy with the interface... just not the size of the display. (gettin' old & cranky).
I use the FM radio (on external speaker) while I'm working, so that's a must. I also have a GPS program that works well with the Tilt2 (NoniGPS). I find that the audio (speaker) from the Tilt2 is really pretty good (in my old-ears opinion).
I'm thinking that I may miss the keyboard tho, as I've got big fingers and find that most of the on-screen keyboards are too small.
I've looked at many of the comments here - some are lamenting the lack of apps... can you run the 'older' 6.x version apps on this platform?
I played with one at the ATT store the other day, and couldn't figure out how to get to all of the tools settings like the Tilt2... maybe AT&T turned it off so folks couldn't mess with their demos.
I'll continue looking and reviewing, just figured I'd ask a few questions.
Thanks!!
Tim
The FM radio only works on headphones, unless the phone is unlocked (which we haven't done yet). GPS will come with the Lumia (Nokia Drive).
The keyboard is one of the best I've seen in a phone, very accurate and responsive.
And no, you can't run the WM 6.x apps in WP7.

You will be unhappy with the lack of customizability.
You will be happy with the reliability.
FYI, former Tilt, Tilt2, Fuze owner here.
Former Tilt2 owner (last one was sold on eBay this past week). Most of the apps that are missing from WM6.5 are utilities that you don't need/cant use on WP. Like Total Commander for example.
WP is very short on customization, so you won't find tools and menus. Ultimately, the choose is yours, so take this for what it's worth. I was so convinced that WP would be too immature an OS for me in 2010, I bought two backup Tilt2s to compliment the one I already had. Figured it might take a year or two to mature. Spent an hour with the HTC Surround on launch day, and knew I had to have it. Yes, I miss a little from WM, but there is so much more. And WP is so buttery smooth. The L900 is the best phone I have ever owned.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the inputs. Wow, 6.x apps won't run on 7. Guess I'll have to see if there are 7 versions for the stuff I use. I figured all the 6.x would do ok... figured that's a big marketing thing that Msoft wouldn't let go.
Can it sync with outlook? (I don't use it for e-mail, although it's where my contacts are.
I don't really have any issues with the current Energy ROM & tilt2, it's <pretty> stable... haven't had to do a hard reset yet. Just looking for a larger display.
Guess I could keep the Tilt2 & use it every now and then!
Oh, I read in one of the on-line reviews that the FM radio can play through the speakers.. if not, guess I can wait till the unlock comes around... I didn't have that capability until I upgraded to the Energy ROM
But hey, Amazon has them for $20, so I guess I can't complain. Just have to re-up for another couple of years contract. Shouldn't be any more $, as I already have unlimited text/data plan, etc.
Again,
Thanks!

you cant use the WM6.5 appa as this is a new OS..
cant sync outlook but you can load outlook connector on your outlook and move your contacts and calande to your windows LIVE account, whic will sync with your WP7 (lumia 900). i was worried about this as well but now tis the best thing. i changed from HD7 to Lumia 900 and all i had to do was log in to my windows live ID and and all my contacts and calander items were in my phone at the telco counter...
but if you are happy wit tilt 2 then you shoud not change it...
So as a fellow Tilt2 user. How often do you need to soft reset? On my L900, I never need to. But I might every few weeks, just for the heck of it.
Sent from my Lumia 900 using Board Express Pro
I knew it was a new OS, but figured they would keep some kind of compatibility like 95 - 98 - XP. Guess it's too major of a change.
On the soft resets... with the original rom (the newest 'official' one), it seemed that I needed to do it pretty often for major lockups.
With the new Energy ROM, it seems about once a week I need to for minor issues.
However, I'm really happy with most features of the new rom - on the original one, internet (even over wifi) was poor at best. The new energy rom really makes it work better. Can't seem to run netflix with it tho (on wifi). It comes back and gives me an error saying it can't run with the browser. Maybe there's something that needs to be changed. (maybe the OS)?
But, there's still the display size issue.
Tim
The onscreen keyboard on either the Lumia 900 (4.3") or HTC Titan (4.7") are plenty big enough for my clumsy mitts, I use both phones and apart from the odd typo never seems to create a problem, Bear in mind you can type in landscape mode giving you a bit more keyboard to play with ;-)
Hi Andy,
Thanks for the info.
Since you have both phones, what differences do you see between the 900 & Titan? (other than the larger screen) Build quality, durability, speed, etc.
I figure they are pretty close, perhaps some of the software bundled with the Nokia may be different than that of the HTC.
Thanks,
Tim
Yes the software bundle with the Nokias is very good, Nokia Drive being the most prominent and Free compared to HTCs Locations which you have to pay for As for build quality well the Titan is a sturdy and quite slim build but the fact it comprises of two parts ie: Screen & Rear housing & then you have gold contacts to worry about for antenna & wi-fi etc, These need to be checked once in a while or you can experience connection issues, Funnily enough it doesn't feel too big and is similar in overall size to the Lumia 900.
The Nokia Lumia 900 is a solid single piece of Polycarbonate which is as tough as nails and although the screen is slightly smaller than the Titan the amoled screen reallly does make up for that difference & it is made from Corning Gorilla Glass, The Titans slcd screen really appears somewhat washed out in comparison, Not a problem as it still displays nicely and if I hadn't experienced the Lumia then I would be more than happy, One advantage of the Titan is you can remove the battery and swap it for a higher capacity one although I do get very good battery life from both handsets under moderate usage,
Performance wise there really is not much in it and to be honest, Both are super esponsive which is partly down to the OS to some degree, The Titan can be a smoother experience as I have encountered very slight lag when scrolling on the Lumia on occasion, Nothing drastic though.
Pros and cons for both depending how you look at it.
If I had to choose one it would be the Nokia for the simple reason it is more durable with a nicer display and great bundled software, There is nothing I dislike about it, It also stands out clearly away from the mundane looking HTC and is in a different class where looks are concerned.
I have to agree on displays. I had a samsung super amoled and when the upgrade came up my choices for HTC didnt hold a candle when I put the samsung next to it. Oddly enough I prefered HTC for almost 5 years prior and until I actually did the side by side I thought the HTC was great. Little did I know. I suggest an in-store side by side before deciding. And I mean literally side by side. The fact that amoled can be seen in sunlight outside was enough for me. The color richness and the fact that it doesnt look washed out completed the sale.
Thanks Andy,
Nice comparison!

I recieved mine today, and while I need to upgrade my sim card to MicroSIM, I can tell that the first impression was good. the phone feels fast, and I think that with a bit of tweaking it could be even better. I only have to hope that people don't stop making apps for 7.5/7.8.
how about you? are you satisfied with your phone?

I am Quiet happy with mine
The Sales Guy who sold me the phone just cut my normal sim into a micosim and I am using that with no problem
Things I like :
1) Battery life in par with my SGS2 ( 13-19 hours depending on usage)
2) Nokia apps the best
3) I keep downloading more apps on my lumia 900 than I did on my HTC HD7
4) The screen is awesome in daylight ( even beating my SGS2 screen)
5) Camera setting tweaks can really give you awesome photos.
6) I really can't be bothered with us not getting WP8 as the phone does all that I need and I will buy the second generation wp8 as I am sure the first generation will have its on bug problems.
Do enjoy your Lumia its the best Wp7 out there...
that would be surprising, I've mostly heard "MID RANGE EXPENSIVE PHONE! NO WP8 UPGRADE! WORTHLESS!"
I'm happy with it as long as Nokia continue to sort out the niggles and bring out more new apps.
It works well at making and holding calls, the screen is excellent in sunlight, the camera seems good at taking pics outdoors, the battery is lasting me a good two days, and the satnav seems to work fine.
I don't care that much that it won't get WP8 as I see that as a different operating system. It would be the same as Microsoft saying that my current PC wouldn't be able to run Windows 8. It wouldn't worry me, I'd just continue with Windows 7 until I decide to upgrade my PC.
It's a terrible phone. Sorry Guys, no offense ... but I have a Lumia 900.1 from my employer for test purposes and I really dislike it. Here's why:
sharp corners. ouch
much heavier (5.7oz) than my samsung galaxy s2 with screen protector film (4.8oz)
windows OS is a real pain compared to my previous iPhone 3GS and Android, and the desktop / home screen is crazy ... black? Come on ... no photo / wallpaper? And that broad black strip on the right .. really? Wasted desktop space ... they have this massive screen and they choose to a) waste it on what look like melamine floor tiles and b) take even more space with a big fat black strip? Ugly. Plus, I get to choose exactly the colours that Microsoft want me to choose on my own desktop menu?
I have to PAY for Angry Birds?? Really?? Not on the iPhone or Android
and my biggest gripe ... Almost every useful app says this: "If you want to use me, you have to OK Microsoft and its partners getting yur WPS and GPS and other private information ... OK?" which makes me click "not OK, no" and which causes me to not be able to use maps etc .. even Sound Hound.
This phone is terrible. I LOVE (still) my other older Nikias ... tiny, powerful, reliable, robust, my 6301(b) even has hrdware wifi clling (UMA) ... AMAZING phones. Stereo FM radio etc etc. What the hec were Nokia thinking with this phone and what is up with Microsoft's OS??? It is generations behind.
I really wanted to love this phone. And as an ex-MSFTie, I really wanted to love MS OS. I have, after all, owned and loved other WinMo phones in the past. Eww... no thanks.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion but this kind of attitude really winds me up...

How is this different to Google getting the same info about you? These days I actually trust Microsoft more than I trust Google, who seem to be becoming one of the most evil corporations around.
MS were able to keep a few folks happy but pissed crapload others. Handset makers were "left off the bus" with Nokia got the heaviest blow due to so much hype before L900 launch. Feel free to defend WP7 and Lumia 900. The phone supposedly started @ $100, went free due to a software bug, then back to $100 for like 2-3 weeks, then $50 (amazon) pre 6/20, and after TWO months from launch, FREE!
Feel free to defend MS. People have already left, however. Well I expect to be asked "why are you still here?" Allow me to explain that I once a long-time MS follower because I said no to apple fanboism and android pre-duo core era was crap. Now I can't even find a clue to back WP. I'm pissed, bitter, and frustrated those are my lingering feelings toward MS mobile division. I can't move on until I finally unload the last of these crappy feelings (wish they were as easy as unloading 3x L900 ).
L900 is a feature phone. Software wise: checked, hardware wise: checked.

Sorry, not meaning to be offensive, just posting my opinion (we all have them and I have used a number of different phones. My point was that I really was trying to like the phone because of my MS and Nokia history
I am starting to agree with you about Google. But I don't relish giving YET ANOTHER giant, unfettered access to my sensitive information. Google does not have access to information I give SoundHound and other apps, and those apps do not have or ask access to my location and sensitive data. In fact I have made it a point (apart from Google who have access to my mail and everything else; and my Bank etc) to refuse to instal apps that need my personal or sensitive info.
Simply-put, given the choices of Google and Microsoft, I choose Google, because their invasion of my privacy, at least, gives me inreturn, a VERY SIGNIFICANT benefit. But the MS / Nokia thing ... not even close.
I just switched from a Samsung Focus to a Lumia 900 the other day. It does load apps noticeably faster than my previous phone. Touchscreen response seems a bit slower though.

I have a lot of problems with the Lumia 900, but your complaints are very superficial and, in my opinion, totally invalid. You even say that you were given the device by an employer, and it's obvious you would not have bought the Lumia 900 or any WP7.x device if you had the choice.
You complain about the styling: this is a subjective area and the "sharp corners" and "heaviness" are definitely some of the Lumia 900's strengths. I've used an Epic 4G Touch (Sprint's GSII) and it is very light - in a way that feels very cheap. The Lumia 900 is "much heavier" according to you, yet it's less than an ounce difference. The relative heaviness also adds a feeling of durability definitely not found in the featherweight GSII. Still, this is a subjective area.
Next, you complain about Windows Phone in general. Your biggest gripe is the intro screen to downloaded apps? You make a point to mention that you have to pay for Angry Birds? Makes me think you've spent very little time with this device. You obviously are not a fan of Metro, and singling this out as a flaw with the Lumia 900 are not appropriate.
You say you "really wanted to love this phone." And yet you dislike the styling, the weight, and the OS. What made you think you'd ever love this phone if you hate everything about it? Everything you complain about could be plainly deduced by just looking at a picture of this device. Did you not see this device at all before it was given to you? I'm not sure how you could've "wanted to love this phone."
After nearly three months, still enjoying my (original) beautifully different Lumia 900.

I really like my Lumia 900, I wanted one because of the bigger screen than the Lumia 800 and Front Camera, I preferred it to the HTC Titan and Titan 2 both of which I have owned & used, I was already very familiar with WP7 as owned a HD7 from day one so I knew exactly what to expect but got a few nice surprises with the Nokia software freebies, Design wise it is in a league of its own although not quite as cute as the Lumia 800, Nothing compares to it, I don't find it heavy at all, Battery life is good and performance wise it is very quick, It does everything I want and more, I am not fussed about it not getting a WP8 update and will be happy with the new home screen in WP7.8 along with whatever else they decide to throw in as long as it doesn't impair performance.
I like mine.
The first one I had was returned at about the 30 day mark when the capacitive buttons stopped working completely, but aside from that, it's been great.
I was expecting people to be complaining in here about the camera, lack of WP8 in the future, and the now-defunct data connection problem. Not sharp corners and unbearable heft @5.7oz. Geez.
Lack of home screen customization doesn't have to do with the Lumia 900 specifically; that's a well known, well publicized limitation of the OS itself and has been for eons. One would really assume that by now people would be talking about what they like and dislike about the phone as opposed to what they like and dislike about WP in threads specific to the phone like this. If people want to complain about WP7.X, there is a subforum for that.
My battery life has been great once I realized the MicroCell data connection was a huge drainer, calls are never dropped, I haven't had any forced restarts, and the hardware runs WP7.5 really quickly and smoothly.
Would you recommend this to someone coming from Android?
I'm on a budget and want something that's quick, expandable, and entertaining to use. The only thing that bothers me is the non HD screen, is it very noticeable?
as impopular as this might be, I'd say it's not a big issue.
HD films are too big to fit on the lumia anyway

Yeah, I never watched/loaded videos on my phone, I don't understand it. As long as I have YouTube, Pandora, and space for a few hundred songs I'm set lol. Btw, how's the DAC (audio) quality when listening through headphones? Are there equalizers available on the app store, market or whatever it is?
I prefer Lumia 900 over my iPhone 4S and Galaxy S2. Call quality and signal reception on this phone can't be beat. Believe or not Tango update actually has better management of LTE for me. I always have signal now, everywhere I go. Before Tango update, it was switching to 4G everytime I had one bar on LTE in places with bad reception even though LTE is much faster than 4G and has stronger signal; and 4G would crap out with no signal. Tango fixed that problem for me. My next phone is definitely a Nokia WP8. I don't see myself going back to Android. I would only switch to iPhone. Android isn't reliable enough for me and there are apps compatibility problems, especially in games. The thing I don't like about this phone is high background noise through headphone. I still have a Cowon J3 for music.
I absolutely love my Nokia Lumina 900. Everything is so perfect. Runs smooth my cyan 900 looks so cute and different. People at my work are always asking about my phone and want to play with my phone. Its the best WP7 I've had. I had an LG Incite and I loved that phone. Had a HTC HD7S and I loved that phone to death too! iOS and Android look so ugly. (and cheap because crappy tablets that sell at 50 dollars have android) was going to get the phone with beats audio but the biggest turn off was it had android. aside from not getting Windows Phone 8, I'm fine with that. Just waiting on a custom ROM with all languages like how I had for my HD7S using DeepShining.
I'm happpy with my Lumia 900. It's a great phone.
+ Battery life
+ Weight (the heaviness is a bonus; it feels durable and not cheap)
+ Size
+ Polycarbonate body + design
+ Screen quality, clear black technology
+ Windows Phone 7.5 (and 7.8 to come)
+ Nokia
- Light bleeding from capacitive buttons
- Clicking sound from bottom right hand side of the screen.
Overall I'd give the phone a 8.0/10. The minuses are unfortunate but don't occur in every phone, I was just unlucky I suppose.
The 3D scan capability of the N10+ is what intrigued me most about the phone. However, after release, most tests/examples of scans were disappointing. I read that the software was problematic and expected to be improved. Has this happened? Anyone actually using the phone to create exportable 3d files? If not, is improved 3d tech expected in the next version of the phone?
I tried it a bunch of times and could never get it to work. I mostly gave up since then though I did see that at least a couple of updates to the 3D scanner were released since then. I am yet to try this again.
I see so little about this feature. I really hoped there was more info.

I've tried it a few times, some of them recently. It still works like garbage. It was a really cool idea but the execution has been totally worthless. I think they found the greenest intern they could find and had them randomly copy/paste code from StackOverflow until a program aaaaaaaallllmost formed. Then the intern went back to college and the company janitor took over development. It's just so completely stupid to put a 3D ToF sensor on the phone then totally bork the software and just never fix it. I suppose I shouldn't expect any less from the idiots who built LinuxOnDex then just suddenly aborted development even though it was working perfectly fine. Samsung is the new Google. Never trust anything either of them start. They're 90% likely to never finish it and just discontinue it suddenly.

There is so much truth in this it's scary. Samsung Cloud was just going through my head as I was reading this. Launched, billed as the next best thing to happen to Android devices, then failed to roll out with any sort of desktop support, followed by failure to support buying more storage in almost all regions followed by scrapping of the whole thing and some quasi-partnership with Microsoft to use OneDrive. I can think of a bunch more features like this that Samsung devised and that never took off. The fact that the ToF sensor is not being utilized for better photography is also baffling to me. Samsung's default implementation of DoF is absolutely horrible.
A couple of days ago there was a new update. This doesn't make it suddenly scan things properly. I tried several things, mostly stuffed animals / dog toys as those are about the right size and don't move. Still works like crap. It does an OK job sometimes but the 3D sensor is very picky. I tried to scan a very large mug that is plastic and some of the pieces were too shiny and hardly showed up. I tried to scan a rubber dog toy and it kind of worked but the process was irritating. I tried to scan a large stuffed animal chicken. It's probably 3 feet tall, plush, and covered in fake fur (why would a chicken be furry? The world may never know). This worked OK, the model is decent. But, it was tough to keep my phone at the proper distance as I moved around it. That's mostly my problem but the app is super brittle. If you move too abruptly or you accidentally point your camera too far away it just immediately aborts. I've got programs for the PC that use a Kinect sensor from the XBOX to do scanning and those work similarly but generally tell you if you're getting off course and allow you to try to move back into position rather than just suddenly aborting the scan.
Forget trying to scan your pets. Animals move far too much. Probably forget trying to scan a person. It's hard for a person to sit perfectly still for long enough and this software isn't very forgiving. Though, scanning either pets or people does allow for some bazaar lovecraftian horrors to emerge. If you want to transform your pet into the Thing then this is the way to do it.
I think the problem is that they've got too large a mission. The app supports all kinds of dumb stuff like animating your 3D model after you capture it, etc. They really needed to focus on actually being able to capture models reliably before implementing all the cutesy garbage on top of it. The sad thing is that, for all the crap I give them about how bad it is, it's actually almost there. It's just right on the cusp of working. I can capture models of stuff. They're just very difficult to get working and when I do I see some aberrations that shouldn't be there. It's close to working and if they'd just hunker down and fix the weirdness in capture it could be great in short order. But, it seems like development on this is very slow and too spread out across all the other needless stuff it can do. It needs to scan stuff reliably and then they can work on the other gee-whiz features.
For your viewing pleasure, I've attached the best model I've gotten captured so far - the fuzzy chicken. It's large, it's in charge, it worked pretty well. Behold, the best the 3D Scanner on a Note 10+ can do. I attached both the model output from the 3d Scanner app and a picture of the base model (with no texturing) from Blender so you can see the smoothness and detail of the model without the texture obscuring it. I suppose it's fairly decent but I wouldn't directly use it to 3D print something.

How did you manage to put it in blender?
I played with it but more a curiosity than a useful tool. It really ate cpu cycles/current like crazy though. I guess if I needed a hand warmer I might use it again
may i know how do you scan a 3d model? been finding the app for some time already but cant find it

Search for "3D Scanner" in the Galaxy Store (not Google Play Store) and download the app.
