Guys, DO you think HTC have resolve the soft speaker that is on the Nexus One?
Hopefully, HTC improved the speaker fidelity in Desire or used a better speaker brand in Desire... Doesn't make sense that HTC used a lousy speaker for the Nexus One for an expensive phone..
Yeah i would like to have an answer for this too, as i have Touch Diamond now and the quality of the speaker is very, very poor.. This was only only thing which made me think should i buy desire or not, if the speaker is not good in desire either, i will wait till next year or buy nokia or something worse..
Hate to be the bearer of bad news guys but the speaker on the desire is crap! Real shame for such a high end phone.
I second that!....awful .....but still a great phone!
Just took a phonecall from the missy over the loudspeaker. Could barely understand her. Its not that good.
I feel that in a phonecall the earpiece is fine but if you are using it handsfree or playing music it's pretty gash.

If you don't use full volume it's allright. But at some point it's not that good anymore.
I don't care. I never use the speaker, and when the phone rings it's more than loud enough. If I want good sound quality, I will never use a phone speaker.. ever..
Very disappointed that HTC couldn't manage to get a decent speaker (unlike the iPhone). It's not a show stopper for me but it's still not good for an otherwise high-spec phone.
The sound quality (via speaker) is quite frankly atrocious, whether it's for calls or music. I'm keeping my 3GS to use as an iPod.
What bets that speaker fidelity will be one of the features apple have focused on for the new iPhone, given their iTunes market.
Absolutely love my Desire (proud owner for about 10 hours). HArdware and software very impressive. Yet to find out about the battery life.
aww man, this is disappointing, I would expect HTC could have at least improve their speakers... I have notice that most of their phones really have crap speakers, what gives!!! even my old nokia phone beats any of their lines hands down..
The speaker is half decent, battery life - crap. Other things make up for it, though.

I'm guessing the fact they are squeezing so much processing power and screen into the thing, and the battery to power it. Speaker space wasn't such a premium a few years back.
Coming from a Touch HD, the speaker is 10x better. I have had no problems hearing alerts in noisy environments. Music sounds pretty good for being a single tiny speaker. I think it's as good as iPhone speakers.

Nope.
iPhone sounds like a boombox compared to the Desire.
And it's only through a 4 mm hole.
I've compared the Desire speaker to my Samsung Omnia HD: the Desire clearly lacks bass. Although the Omnia HD speakers sound muffled in comparison.
I guess there's no perfect speaker on cell phones.

There is no way that HTC Desire speaker match the speaker on iPhone 3GS.
I have both and it’s pretty obvious that the speaker in iPhone 3GS is much better than Desire's.
Anyway, for me, that’s the only thing that iPhone 3GS is better than Desire.
It's got a headphone jack, I'm quite happy to plug my little portable Sony speakers into that. I just cycled home from work and had forgot my headphones.. so had my favourite dancehall reggae mix playing through the loudspeaker in my pocket, it sounded fine, even full blast. Agreed nothing to write home about but it aint bad.
Will post again when I can test it for handsfree.
sounds like the trebble is too high and the base is too low, thats if there is anything in there that does base lol
testing with sound on computer, when you set the equalizer to full treble, it sounds like something close to what comes out of the desire, if there was a way to play around with the equalizer settings the quality may be improved?
So, there is nothing wrong specifically with my handset? I was thinking about returning it.
When I hear calls using phone's default speaker, the sound comes okay till one volume level. If I move up, the sound distorts.
If I use speaker-phone, things are worse. After a certain level, sound crackles a lot.
For music via phone's loud speaker, the sound doesn't crackle. But as identified by many, I can hear music with no bass & lots of treble.
Is this normal for Desire?
Comparing it with my wife's N95 (which has stereo speakers) was a nightmare for me.
Hey guys, these are some early unboxing videos of the HTC one X and as you will see, all the videos clearly show that the phone comes with a normal headset and not the Beats headset as claimed .
sucks..gotta buy it seperatly
It does suck a little bit, but for the price (about £30) you can buy far superior earphones.
So yeah, a pain, but not the end of the world
Guys.. be happy about it, really.
I never wanted to have a Beats Headset with it.
A friend of mine has the Sensation XE/XL which comes with Beats Audio (and Beats Headset), he said the phone is beast, but the Beats headset is total crap.
The name sounds cool 'Uhhh original headset of Beats', but the quality of the headset is worse than HTC's standard headset.
He said it sounds horrible and any other headset would be better.
I, for myself, have bought good Sennheiser Headphones for 120€ to use with the Htc One X.
The Beats Audio is just an equalizer setting, which 'should' make the music sound better, also by adding more Bass to it.
But anyway... the Beats headset which normally comes with HTC phones sounds bad and Beats headset itself breaks very, very fast.
I'd be happy that I don't get such crappy headphones with it.
HTC knows that it was a mistake to give such heaphones with their high quality phones, that's why they decided in most cases (and even staff of HTC said so), to not include a beats headset as that would lower the quality.
Beats Audio is overrated. The equalizer setting is nice, the beats headset isn't.
Just get some Sennheiser's and you'll be more happy than you would have been with Beats, over-rated stuff.
I too don't care much even though if it were there I would've been happier, but those headsets really really sucks. Most people like those headsets that goes in the ear not those ones

Overrated.....but comes for free so why not take it? If anything, resell it for profit.
Beats aren't terrible, it depends what kind of music you enjoy listening to. Definitely better for more modern stuff like dubstep etc...hip hop/R&B
As for Beats Audio, it's an equalizer right now but they're going to integrate it a lot deeper
any good in-ear earphones that can control music and pick up calls to recommend? previously i was hoping they will give the earphones similar to those in sensation xl, that are in-ear and can control music and pick up calls.. guess that is happening this time round.

They offer it in europe too......it's the deluxe edition that comes with Beats Solo's for around $60 more. Worth the extra money IMO as Beats Solo's sell for $150
In other HTC phones they are known to.have low volume while listening to music specifically with over ear headphones. I have a HTC sensation which has this issue did HTC fix it? Is the volume louder while listening to music? How does it compare to other phones such as the iPhone or other HTC phones? My HTC sensation was extremely low compared to the iPhone or any other mp3 device it almost made me not want to use it as a mp3 player while using over ear headphones. I plan on getting the one X when it comes to the US.

My HOX definitely pumps more volume than my DHD, headphones AND speaker.
That was a major relief because I couldn't hear sh*t on my DHD

Interesting, two sets of RMAA results now are in agreement that it's rather poor. Check GSMarena's review.
To answer the OP: Looking at the objective results you will not be able to drive higher quality headphones adequately (things with 300ohm impedance for example, like many higher-end Sennheiser headphones), more sensitive headphones with impedances 70ohms or less should be doable (although they will sound quieter than with many other phones).
Ok so today i put my One X, Sensation XL, iPod and Sensation classic to music test
HTC didn't not really lie when they said now Beats is included in software and let me explain why
If you use the iPod earphones, standard old HTC earphones and urBeats with the Sensation XL, you find the best audio is coming from urBeats, second place goes to the iPod earphones and finally ofcourse the old messy HTC earphones
but then i expected the included One X to do badly on the One X, turns out urBeats is doing very badly even if you choose urBeats profile, the included One X headset actually comes best a bit better or equal to the iPod earphones, which are not bad to begin with, certainly miles ahead of the old HTC stuff, the One X earphones does best with urBeat profile very similar to the quality of urBeats on XL, which are for some reason rendered useless on the X
of course this is all subjective and depends on my audio preference
but my point is, it seems the Sensation XL was simply detecting the urBeats set and enabling the beats improved profile, has nothing to do with the quality of urBeats itself
on the One X those profiles are open for you to choose from and the include inbox earsets is so incredibly close to the iPod ones, not a bad deal if you ask me!
The included beats profiles sound really good and we have tons of profiles to choose based on our test and they work globally too, much better beats/audio than the sensation XL!
I find the audio quality far better on the one X stock headphones on my one X compared to the endymion Rom (sensation xl) for my desire S using the same phones.

to be honest, the earphones are good and i wouldt have mind them if they were in-ear and had music control instead of pause play function only..
been using in-ears for far to long to go back to non in-ear earphones..
I have been using klipsch s4i and Bose Mie2i with my phone and the output was great compared to the output with my iPod touch. Previously with my DesireHD there is no comparison of the sound quality. Thanks to the beats audio.

Indeed, the new earphones from the One X are not bad and way better than the standard HTC earphones from earlier phones. But I still have the Beats in-ear headset from my Sensation XE and that sounds way better than the ones out of the box.
Hi, did anyone tried to use some high-end in-ear earphones? Like Sennheiser.
I have and the sound is brilliant, bassy and crisp
tested my klipsch s4i vs the included urBeats by Monster earphones. (beats headset is included @ vodafone one series devices)
the beats do have a better bass but the s4i sounds more natural, the midrange is a lot clearer.
sadly the cable remote of the s4i won't work completly, pause and play is possible, but no track jumping.
anyways, i will he selling my beats headset, the s4i are the better earphones for me, much lighter, much more confortable and i think the better sound
(so if you want just testet urbeats... pm me, they are like new)

Install klipsch control app for play store, which will enable all the missing features of the button. But the volume buttons still won't work.
Does the urbeats have the music control and volume control features?

As far as I can see there is just one Beats profile and option to choose headset. All other profiles are regular profiles.
At first, changing these profiles didn't do anything to me. Then I found out that PowerAMP is going around all those profiles, it's an option: Audio Engine > Advanced Tweaks > Direct Volume Control. It's enabled by default and for me it is better that the stock/beats profiles. I can also further tweak equalizer to my liking/headphones I'm using, to get more/less bass.
Nothing wrong with beats. Enabling it sounds like enabling that PowerAMP option + adding some bass boost.

Yes, that's the "choose headset" option I mentioned too.
I wonder, why is audio quality so bad when beats if off or when DVC is off in PowerAMP? The difference is so easy to notice.
I'm using sennheiser headphones with poweramp. Sounds great but can't see the Beats button in power amp... Just SRS. In any case, it still sounds great with SRS but anyone else have this issue with poweramp build 488?

I don't think there is Beats button in PowerAMP? I think you need to go into Settings > Sound and enable Beats there, then disable DVC in PowerAMP. As long as DVC is enabled, PowerAMP has direct control over audio hardware.
Now I know many people dislike beats headphones and think there not good for audio quality (which I agree on for all the beats headphones EXCEPT the pros) but yer Ive had solos studios and now pros and I gotta say man the sound from the pros with this phone is amazing, blows my sensation out the water. My biggest complain about beats in general is that its very overpriced, fooling people into thinking they are getting more than they are. But I can see it's attractive offer to many people especially when they have beats profiles in the phones, instead of profiles for Shures, Sennheisers, Sony and all other popular ones. And I can see the beats profile does a good job when enabled, no argue here, but I was always getting the same from PowerAMP and it's DVC.

Someone i know wants to swap their htc one for my SGS4 ,
they dont listen to music a lot and i do EVERY day so my question is is the beats audio as good as everyone raves on about?
and do you reckon thats a fair swap
I suggest watching this first, but what makes the HTC One better isn't beats but the actual speakers on the phone.

Yeah I've looked on YouTube but it's not really a good comparison. Only thing that puts me off is the camera
I don't have a comparison of the S4 to the one, but I did just upgrade from S3 to the One about a week ago and I do think the sound from the One's speakers is a whole lot better than any other phone I've owned or heard. I don't like beats audio though. I actually turned it off because it seemed to bring too much bass through and distorts the sound quite a bit. With beats turned off the phone sounds very very good, imo, and sounds amazing for a phone. Another note is I haven't listened to any music with headphones, only with the phone's speakers, so I don't know how beats would sound using headphones.
Hope that helps.
maak
I listen to the HTC One a lot with headphones and I keep the beats audio off. I have noticed with the beats audio ON there is a hiss in the background that takes away from the music a bit. For just the speakers, the beats audio on or off both sound really good. Hope this helped!

I usually leave it on when I'm listening to music or audio of any kind through the speakers. Haven't done much headphone testing but I don't remember being excited about BeatsAudio through headphones.
It's nothing more than an overhyped equalizer setting. This guy explains it pretty well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cdbn_pmxFic
The thing is, when you turn it off, it doesn't actually turn off. It adjusts the equalizer in the opposite direction instead, so you get artificially degraded sound. A pretty sneaky way to make you think Beats makes your music sound better.
This is what I have told people for years about beats. There's nothing special about it that its just an eq setting which you can recreate with any DSP type app we have seen out for a while and quite honestly make it sound better. Beats is for (I hate to say it) for lazy people that doesn't want to take the time to setup an eq setting.

And i've tested several phones personally such as xperia z , s4 , apple 5s , htc one in my car. (bang & olufsen sound system) - incredible quality.
While on my friend's stock honda sounds horrible , so it depends on a quality of you stereo or headphones.

This is true but using other DSP apps while running aosp ROMs on this phone have gotten better sounds than what beats could produce. Beats is just a general eq setting no more no less. Most likely they did a study on the eq settings and this setting that's in the phone now is what the general population agreed on. Me myself can enjoy beats setting but there are times I like to fine tune it more.

I use the power amp on my HTC and used it on my galaxy s, 10 band equalizer appears to sound good.
It definitely sounds better on the One with Beats enabled, but the external speaker volume takes a pretty big hit with Beats on. I usually end up leaving it on for music, but turn it off whenever I'm watching a video. I think just as good or better sound with better volume can be achieved with DSP or Power Amp.

BEATS
They are over rated. With the auto adjustment part it makes the music sound weird like its fading in and out. thats the most annoying part. so i leave beats off.
As said before it's nothing but an equalizer. It does sound great under most conditions but it's nothing that should make or break your decision on getting the phone as just about any audio app(and other custom ROMs) can do the same.
I probably wouldn't consider myself a picky audiophile by any means but I think the stereo speakers on the One are most of the difference I hear. My audio app is Poweramp which has a really nice EQ built in. I prefer to tweak that over enabling Beats. Beats sounds over processed to me. Even running AOKP, the first time I had a notification while I held the phone had me startled with the clarity and volume of the sound... and that was without Beats obviously.
Beats just sounds like a bass boost to me. Which I'm okay with or without.
