[Q] Refurbished w/ ICS dilemma help needed. - Acer Iconia Tab A100

My girlfriend just bought a refurbished A100. It arrived with ICS 2 days before the OTA was due. At first I was like GREAT! but upon further investigation I found it had the camera and speaker bugs reported in earlier leaked versions. So I looked at the build number and sure enough its an old build (.002).
Now my dilemma is do I wait for the OTA in a couple of days or do I use the stock ICS (.014) downloaded in the Dev section.
Now my girlfriend has watched me live through the agony and ecstasy of flashing roms and kernels on my Galaxy Tab and Revolution and does not want me to root her Acer.
I have searched the A100 forums and it appears you can flash this w/out root through stock recovery. Please correct me if I am wrong.
I can't seem to find very clear cut directions but here is what I think I need to do someone please tell me if I understand correctly.
1.rename downloaded zip to update.zip
2. put on root of external sd card (anywhere in particular)
3. turn tab off
4. turn tab back on by holding power and volume down
5. let go of power button and continue to hold volume down
6. let go of volume down when Android w/ gears icon appears
7. let it do it's thing
8.profit!
I'm a noob to Acer but not Android in general. Please any advice would be appreciated as I REALLY don't want to F-Up my Girlfriends new baby.

I know you feel buddy, my girlfriend inherited my old HTC Desire, which she loves but, doesn't love it when I say "I have a new ROM for you!" She loves having ICS though so go figure!
Yeah you've got it all right, it might take a few times to get into the stock recovery, it drove me mad ha ha, no harm done though just a bit fiddly to get the button combo every time.
the .014 release is the ICS to flash as it has full touch support with games.

Thank you for your quick reply toyface. Just another quick couple of questions.
Does the screen lock button need to be in any particular position when doing the stock recovery flash?
Is there any particular folder or place on the sdcard that I have to put the update.zip?
If I decide to wait on the OTA, will it go right over the old ICS build or will having the old ICS interfere with that?
Thanks again.

The stock rom in the development section is the same as the ota update, so your tab won't find a new update as it will already be installed. As for flashing, your steps are correct, but make sure you hold the volume button closest to the power button and you should be good. Hope this helps!

Everything went smooth as silk. I have now have a happy girlfriend with a happy tablet, therefore I am a happy man. Thanks for the help!

Newly rooted...why did I wait 22 months?!?

I hope that I'm not speaking out of turn, but I am unable to post in developer thread...SO...I figure this gives me an opportunity to introduce myself during my probationary period, and maybe bring some entertainment to the community through my adventures as a rooting noob.
First off, I decided to root my Evo 4g which I'd kept updated through every OTA the moment it was released. I thought that was the best way to maintain my device, though after the first Gingerbread OTA...I wasn't so sure. For some reason or another, Sense UI would reboot everytime I clicked on the home button. This was obviously annoying, so I looked for alternative launchers.
The only one that I could find at the time was Launcher Pro. I immediately liked the fact that my device seemed to operate normally again, but I wasn't completely satisfied with the lack of customization options. So through some more OTA updates, I finally got one that fixed my Sense problem.
Fast forward to a week ago...I saw that HTC would not be supporting the EVO 4g with an ICS update, yet xda-developers were all over it. Peace out Sprint-HTC...Hello Rooting Community!
Before I continue this journal...I just want to make sure that the Mods/Admins are cool with a guy that is still figuring things out with rooting his own device, sharing some of the highs and lows of the journey from a stock user...to a Rooted Outlaw!!

Yeah. Cool, congrats.
But just a word of caution, Developer threads are for developers. That's where ROMs and other software gets posted. So one day, if you are able to post there...do yourself a favor and don't post something like this there. You'll get blasted.
I don't really see a question there which needs to be answered (this is the Q&A forum an all) but I guess it's more appropriate here than in a dev forum. If you want to post in the dev forum, learn to code and write something useful that you want to share.
Am I the only one that has to hit that captcha refresh about a dozen times to find one I can read? lol
Back to where I left off...
So I decided to root my device...starting first with an unrEVOked3 guide. I didn't realize until unrEVOked3 failed to root my device with the message..."Is your device too new?"...that my journey had only just begun. Through a few more failed attempts with unrEVOked, I found myself trying the rEVOlutionary method. Only, I had previously updated my Gingerbread firmware past that point.
5 hours into the process...too much invested to turn back now...must sleep however since it's 5am.
I toss and turn in bed for a good hour, still trying to figure out what to do next. Did I miss a step?
Next night, after a day of staring at my phone and googling "how to root gingerbread evo 4g", I come across the "Rooting Gingerbread for dummies" thread at the Android Forums.
5 hrs later...I'm now rooted, but still watermarked s-on.
What did I do wrong?
Another night of tossing and turning...I must of screwed up one of the Captain Throwback steps...the sun is up, and so is my daughter...I got a couple of hours of sleep. Back to the computer!

Thanks for the insight bro!
Not really trying to write development material yet, just post some feedback to one of the roms I'm trying in that developers thread.
I realized after creating this thread that I was in the Q&A section...lol...oh well, not quite the audience I was looking for, but I'm sure someone will find an answer to their questions through one of my own problems with the process.

So I brew myself a fresh pot of coffee and get back to work (playing with my phone)...
Step-by-step I read back through the Captain's instructions...what did I miss? Is it my phone? Do I need to try the TacoRoot method?
when you run the taco root commands it will make your phone very unstable and not useable...

Uhhh....Alright, back to the Captain!
I'm doing it again...one step at a time. Read everything carefully. No skipping the easy steps that I feel like I've done a dozen times already...adb shell...type EXIT...$
Wait, what? No $, I want #...su...#...cool...EXIT...$?!?
Screw it. The Captain doesn't mention it, so I'm sure it's supposed to happen like that.
Reboot into bootloader...yup, it says locked again...I'm feeling good. Right on track. Why isn't it asking me to update? I never unplugged. The Captain didn't say to unplug...screw it, I'm unplugging. SD card re-mounts..."do you want to start update?"...sweet!
Fast forward through the unrevoked process, and I'm FINALLY rooted!!!
So...now what? lol
I'm gonna Google that..."rooted android now what?" Look at that, someone wrote an article with that same title! Flash Roms, customization, delete bloatware, run root-only apps...
Where to begin...
I first tried the Rom that Captain Throwback has at the end of his thread...I believe MikeG was the developer...CT says with a wink that it will be the last rom I will ever need to flash.
Titanium Backup and Rom Manager are AWESOME programs for the noob rooter. I never felt nervous flashing my first Rom KNOWING that my stuff was backed up, and that someone smarter than me with that device wrote the program that was walking me through the process.
After flashing that first Rom, I was stoked! My phone was running as good as the first day I got it! I immediately starting checking out all of the cool apps that require root access that I could never run before. CPU Master, Wireless Tether, Rom Toolbox...whoa...Rom Toolbox is a kick-ass App! With a capital "A". There is really no need for a few of these other apps that I got since Rom Toolbox does all of that AND MORE.
So I spend about an hour playing with my new apps, and setting up my home screens when I realize...wait a minute...I rooted my phone to get ICS. What am I still doing with froyo?
LOL. Why stop with ICS? you really should try some of the AOSP roms. I am currently running CIUI. very nice smooth rom very lite on space. As for great sense roms... try the Energy sense 3.5 rom release 3/15/12. I used that one and it was awesome but wanted to ditch sense.

I'm done with Sense too. I really like GO Launcher EX. The transition effects appeal to me, and ability to customize nearly everything...icon size, number of pages, item carousel, app folders...I really haven't found something that I want to do that limits me from.
I'll try that Energy sense 3.5 you mentioned though...I'm currently using Alter Rom 0.0.4 pre-release version. It's really nice! Great on battery life, and has that cool TV on/off effect when pressing the power button. I'm still trying to find that option in the settings...lol
Welcome to the dark side... Once you root you never go back to a stock rom....

this is my current daily driver... i use go launcher also.. This rom has the tv on off effects on power button presses. One thing to keep in mind with any sense 3.5 rom or aosp miui(ciui) have issues wiht sprint VVM... there is a workaround but I opted for the easy route and just switched to google voice.
Glad you finally decided to root, and glad you got through the instructions relatively unscathed.
Enjoy your custom ROMs, and I'm glad to have been of assistance .

I'm loving this Alter Rom right now!
I might not ever go back to Sense, TBH. I'm still looking for a fully functional ICS rom...I've seen a couple that are getting close. With 20k people online at any given time here, I know it's only a matter of time.
When that time comes, I just hope that it's awesome...lol...it would be a bit of a letdown if after anticipating something so much, it turns out not to be that great. Kinda like going downstairs Christmas morning, and finding a stocking full of tube socks.
If I were you, I wouldn't commit to anything too quickly. As they say, there are a lot of fish in the sea! There are a lot of great Sense ROMs out there. I prefer SOS X Odex. Running great, and active development. That's just me though. A lot of people love CyanogenMod, and I'll surely try CM9. Others like MIUI which offers something closer to an iPhone if I'm not mistaken. Never used it. There is even a nice WM7 ROM I saw, but it's not my thing. Experiment with different combinations of ROMs, kernels, settings, mods, and tweaks.

Good point. I can always restore.
I've been reading a lot about kernels...you can only use certain ones with certain roms though, right?
The next mod I want to try is setting up my sd card to ext4. I've backed up my sd on my PC, but I still think that I want to try it out with a fresh sd. I'm rocking that 8gb sd that came stock with the Evo 2yrs ago...so I'm probably more than overdue to upgrade that anyway.
I'll try those three that you mentioned. Thanks for that!

make sure you do the research before you partition that sd card and upgrade it to ext4. I have read, if i remember right that our phones dont support sd-ext4. just remember, with most sense 3.5 or higher roms, you may have trouble finding one that has working WiMax and Sprint VVM. This may have changed, but it was due to no sprint phones having this android version factory installed and they were all ports form other carriers.

You might want to check out Swiper's MIUI ICS? It's an aosp rom and it is one of the few stable ICS roms.
To comment on your posting privileges, I too am on my trial basis. But the thing is i'm not a developer but I have been rooting my evo since I got it at it's release. So i know a few things....I hate i can't post on the developers threads I've helped many via private messaging LOL It's frustrating....
started out using synergy/energy roms, (being more familiar with sense), once i downloaded bw, I had no more need for sense.
(Plug for Deck's ics here) once you go ics, you won't go back.
Regarding your question about kernels, just do the obvious and make sure the kernel is made for that rom (sense kernel for sense rom, aosp for aosp). Other than that, if you read through any development thread, you're most likely going to stumble across which kernels are more successful for each rom. It's usually asked by someone.

Music player suggestions?

The stock music player works fine for me. The thing is, and maybe it has some sort of option and I just don't know about it, but when I go out for my walks, I hate having to reach down and taking the phone out of the case from my waist to skip to the next song or replay the last song.
So I was wondering if there were any options that would allow me to maybe use the volume up down buttons or the buttons on the built in mic/volume control on the Samsung headset that came with the phone to do this?
Thank you,
Whiteice
First off, are you rooted?
If yes, then you can try FreeGS3 ROM[/UR], it's close to stock with many tweaks including the vol up/down mod to change songs. Was looking for a flashable zip in the dev section but couldn't find one.

Yes, I am rooted.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will look into it. If you happen to come across a flashable zip for the stock rom on root, please do let me know.
With all the flashing of different roms on my Nexus 7 recently, I am burnt out right now flashing roms. I just got this phone and getting used to it, so im not looking into roms, not just yet, but eventually sure. Plus, being on Sprint, word is the JB update is coming out soon so I don't want to flash a rom then JB comes out.
Regardless, thank you,
Whiteice
Poweramp has good reviews, not free however.. they do have a trial version though.
I've been using Player Pro for a couple years now, nice interface and cool widgets and lock screen options. They have a week trial you can use, that's how they got me

Noob with Rom questions

I am truly sorry for creating another thread but after searching I wan't able to find the answer to the questions I have. Hopefully someone can help me so here goes, I have a Verizon gnex that was previously running stock 4.1.1, as of now I'm running JBSourcery 4.5. Now my questions are as follows,
1. How do I take a screen shot, in stock form it was power button and volume down. That doesn't seem to work now.
2. I was rooted and unlocked (obviously) but was wondering if I still needed to follow the directions below

Try sourcery control panel.there you can find power option for screen shot, so after holding power button, you will see screen shot menu.
I guess you will notice your resolution, but anyway you can find settings for tablet mode under sourcery control panel too.
I am not using this Rom currently, but you can get more information within their forum here.Try search for sourcery

after a day or two of running the ROM I am much more comfortable with it. I figured out how to change tabletUI and do a screenshot. Pretty cool ROM and I feel like it has just enough setting to make it your own but not to many where a person gets confused.
thanks again for the reply.

has anyone running Sourcery ROM ran into a battery issue. I could run almost the whole day on a 100% charge while I was still factory but now that I have flashed this ROM i get 12 hours max. I have the screen turned down to 25% through out the day but that hasn't helped. What would be a better way to narrow down running apps besides going to manage apps through the settings?

*QUICK EASY!* Phantom Key Press Fix using Revolt JB ROM 10.2 4.3.1 settings!

This is my first time I am ever posting and I am extremely anxious and shy about doing this or if I even make myself understandable and as helpful as I can..... Please if there is something that doesn't make sense please let me know so I can try to be a little more clear....
Now........To Begin
:victory:
I had a previous Sprint Samsung Galaxy S2 SPH-D710 that did not have this problem at all but I traded it for a black one because I did not like having a white phone and that's where my problems began....I had known the phone had a pressing button problem but I did not know what it was at the time or what it was called. But I was sure there was a way to fix it somehow. As soon as I had the phobe in my hands I saw how horrible it was.....It did not let me do anything not even for 30 seconds without the menu, back buttons, and I was upset because since I had to reinstall a new ROM on this phone (which I don't mind that's the fun part) but the keys kept going off every couple of seconds so I decided to look into finding a way to fix it and I did kinda. And I will post the link to the first one too because it can be useful and work for someone else and if it wasn't fir that post I wouldn't have thought of my fix.
Anyway here is the link to the first one : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=
I followed these steps and basically what it is, is a method where you disable your hardkey that is causing you problems and switching it to the search button since most of us really don't use the search key anyway. But I won't go much into detail the post above goes more in depth. In the beginning it actually worked but then I noticed that the back key started pressing itself and then the menu still presses itself and even now and the search button which was converted to the new menu so I got upset and exasparated because to even do this method took me literally 2 hours because the damn keys wouldn't stop pressing themselves. And then I thought of another method which to me proved easier than that and does work. I simply used the same method but when I got to the General.kl instead of disabling one key I disabled all 4 and bang problem solved! But BEFORE that you need to make sure you have already installed an app where you can get your hardkeys on your screen and set it up to where you kniw your keys all work * OH AND YOU NEED TO BE ROOTED FOR THE SETTINGS FOR MENU AND BACK WORK! *. And I found a really good and free app in the market that is easy to use and wont get in the way of your screen while typing and customizable. It is called "Floating Toucher" and once installed and set up and disabled keys in General.kl and rebooted phone everything was working fine!!!! AND IT WORKED JUST FINE YOU JUST HAVE TO GET USED TO NOT TOUCHING KEYS ANYMORE AS THEY DON'T WORK BUT ITS TRUSTHWORTHY!....
Anyway I when all this happened I had GB27 4.1.2 and I wanted an upgrade so I flashed to Revolt JB ROM 4.3.1 (will post link to this ROM if you are interested in this method) and after that because the phone reset itself the hardkeys were enabled again. So because I it was a new ROM for me I looked in depth at their settings and there is where I found my solution!
1. Go to your settings and you go to Revolt Control.
2. When you are there you will see they have extra settings for the phone.
3. Scroll down to: Pie Controls
4. Click on the first setting that says: Pie Controls/ Allows navagation and status report and enable it.
5. Customize the settings how you want then to be to your liking!
6. Go back to previous menu.
7. Scroll down to: Soft Keys Options
8. Click on: Enable Soft Keys Options
9. You will notice all four of your hard keys are there including the setting when you long press them. Simply click on each one and press blank on all of them.
10. Then you go to previous screen and reboot and there! Easier than having to install over apps or disable keys! Its in the settings already and I am extemely happy now! No more Phantom Ghost Key!!!
