Q] Rooting and flashing a desire z - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I am pretty new in flashing android phones. I am the owner of a desire Z, i did flash a few phones before, but is wat the touch pro or the kaiser. This (android) seems a lot more difficult.
I started to read some tutorials, but I guess I am doing something wrong.
This are my steps
1. Rooting
2. superwipe
3. install
Am I missing something or is this correct? And what rom is preferable?
Thank you

What is your root method? Gaining root could be temporarily done using the Visionary app (not really recommended), but does not give you the ability to flash ROMs to the phone.
The full unlock/rooting/"I want to flash ROMs" method is listed here. Follow that and you shouldn't have any issues.

This guide should be much easier to follow if downgrading and rooting is what you want. http://www.desirez.strawmetal.com/p/downgrading-from-gingerbread-to-froyo.html

Question about TheBiles root method

Been lurking for a while and reading up on rooting and flashing roms. Picking up my Evo tomorrow and I am going to root and flash a custom rom then. I have all of the necessary files downloaded and have read over TheBiles instructions numerous times. My question is on Section I Step 4 when I download unrevoked do I need to be concerned about downloading the correct version of unrevoked? I know that changes have been made to that app to allow more of a "complete" root but I am not interested in rooting that way. I just want to follow the guide provided by TheBiles so I want to make sure that I am downloading the proper version of unrevoked.
Thanks in advance for your help.
I'm not really sure about the changes to Unrevoked. I followed The Biles method a week or two ago and it went just fine using Unrevoked. I'm not even sure that it's actually Root. I think all it does is allow superuser access temporarily to allow you to backup your phone prior to actually rooting.
Once you've done the backup using Titanium Backup (and you aren't going to even need that on a fresh phone) it wants you to reboot into the phones recovery system and flash the actual firmware/whatever update that roots the phone.
So, long post made short: I think you can skip the Unrevoked part and go directly to flashing PC36IMG.zip. But I'm not 100% positive.

Rooting from 2.2 stock on a Mac?

I know this has been asked a few times, but reading through 100's of threads and posts, I still dont see it..
Has anyone come up with a procedure to root a stock 2.2 froyo evo while using a mac computer yet?
thanks so much!
It's the exact same method. There's an unrevoked 3 for mac and it works done. An updated mac will also already have the driver so you can skip that step.

well, the unrevoked website has this posted, re: stock froyo 2.2..
"unrevoked3 recovery reflash tool
unrevoked3 is a tool to flash a custom recovery image to your Android phone. A custom recovery image allows you to perform advanced tasks on the system partition, such as flashing custom ROMs and taking a full backup of your phone (a “nandroid” backup). We recommend installing the custom recovery image for all users who want rooted phones.
It can be obtained from http://www.unrevoked.com/recovery/.
At this time, unrevoked3 does NOT work on stock Froyo (Android 2.2) phones."
Is that true?
thanks
Yes. You'll want to find the root 2.2 thread in the dev forum. The steps are pretty much use an exploit to downgrade to 2.1 and then use unrevoked. I simply didn't cover all of the steps.

yeah, I have seen that thread; so, just use unrevoked 3 for mac to "start" the process, and just follow the thread once you have root?
I dont recall if there are any ".exe" files you need to run through the process, since you obviously cant run those on a Mac..
thanks!
Hi, I know this thread is old but I'm resurrecting it because it sort of applies to my situation.
Basically I want to know if I could use this to flash to an old stock update as opposed to a beta build. (I'm on an epic so I won't go into more details, just curious if I can use this basic methodology since I do not have any access to a windows machine and ODIN does not work on mac). Thank you!

[Q] CWM install

Hi i have a question.
I would like install a ICS on my desire z, but how can i install a cwm without unlocking my device by htcdev.com?
best way to get s-off and root is the wiki guide:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wik...sion#Rooting_the_Vision_.28G2.2FDZ.29_and_DHD
part of it is how to install cwm recovery
This is the best that I have seen. IF you follow the directions you will have this done without hassle. I am so much a noob and I was able to root and s-off my g2 in less than two hours. I did my wifes phone in about an hour.
Thanks i will try it.
Homever can i install just cwm for flash any ics' rom or i must root my pda too?

[Q] Rooting HTC One V

Hello!
I was strict at not making a new thread since there are a lot of discussions going on already, but the more I went through them, the more I was confused. I'm a complete newbie at rooting and want to root HTC One V GSM (Primo U).
I followed this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1598964 and got introduced to all the terminologies about rooting. But as I reached the end of the thread, people discussed that this method is old, and there was some issue with CWM or TWRP. Should I stick to the same method or is there any new and easy method available?
The reason why I'm rooting my phone is, it has became very slow, it lags and takes minutes to do simple tasks. By rooting, I was planning to install custom ROM, remove bloatware, move apps to SD card and overclock (slightly) to increase the performance.
Also, after going through this forum, I encountered that a lot of custom ROMs are discontinued for this device. Can you suggest me the best custom ROM which will serve the best for the above requirements. Or can I achieve all this on stock ROM itself?
Thank You!

Even I am a newbie in Android rooting...and you got the right thread (sticky) for rooting.
don't worry I followed the same thread and successfully rooted my device (HTC One V PromU)
also I recommend TWRP (am also using it) and faced no issues in it

Thanks for your quick reply. So according to that thread, first, I'll need to unlock the bootloader, then install TWRP instead of CWM, right? then take the backup using Nandroid and then run Superboot to root it. Now that being done, my phone will be still on the stock ROM, right? then how should I install myONEv RC9.5 FX+ ROM? (Sorry noobish question).
Also, will myONEv RC9.5 FX+ will help to make my phone fast?
Let me tell u that initially I was afraid/confused regarding Android unlocking/rooting process..but after following xda thread found it too easy to follow and I'm 100% sure u will feel the same after completing the whole rooting process.

yes, if u have gone through unlocking/rooting threads(many r there in xda) for HTC One V u will find the unlocking bootloader is the topmost & 1st step in rooting.
so do in this order:
1.unlock bootloader
2.then rooting process (as given in that thread)
3.then flashing custom recovery (TWRP in this case)
4.nandroid backup
5.enjoy!!!!
and after rooting phone will be on stock ROM only (u can remove bloatwares now)
custom rom flashing is clearly explained by devs in their threads

+1 I agree and also OP can post his queries in the same thread he refereed for unlocking/rooting :good:
I prefer backup of no rooted stock ROM

I prefer taking a nandroid backup before rooting so that if u ever want to go back to stock without root u can without hassle of downloading stock ROM. Personal experience:silly:
is TWRP better than Clockwork recovery mode? I used CWRM during my rooting and flashing, I am newbie also on this.

Yup, it is better, even I'm using the same.
Well, can anyone suggests a working Jelly Bean ROM for HTC One V, I find all of them to be discontinued. Project Butter should be strictly included in it.
Thank You.

[Q] Doubts in rooting

So far I've had only Samsung phones, which were rooted by flashing a zip file through the built-in recovery (containing signed SuperSU).
Now I have a 2013 Nexus 7 and I'm looking at the rooting guides and I see bootloader unlocking, flashing custom recoveries and a lot of other things which personally confuse the hell out of me as to why are they needed.
So I wanted to ask if there is a way to just flash a zip file with the SuperSU (and buzybox) app like how it's done on the Samsung phones? Or if there is a method that doesn't require replacing the stock recovery / flashing ROM components?
If anything its easier than any Samsung device but the thing is don't Root if it confuses you at least until you understand how to do it there is tons of guides online

That's kind'a my question, it's not that I don't know how, I just don't get if all the side-stuff in 90% of the guides is actually needed, so I asked if there is a way to just get SuperSU working without any custom-recoveries or other side-things.
To my knowledge, you need to have a custom recovery to root it. Unlocking the bootloader helps with this, as it ensures recovery and root sticks.
Or, just use the Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit to unlock and root.

I was in the exact same position as you four days ago, up until then the only android devices I had owned were the Samsung Galaxy S2 and S4. It is quite different to the rooting process on the samsung devices but just as you did with the Samsung devices you will learn as you go along. My bootloader is unlocked, rooted with a custom rom and it was pretty easy to do

A sideload would only be needed if you didn't dump SuperSU on the phone first.
Unlock bootloader
Flash TWRP
Flash SuperSU
Done
Get wugfresh's nexus root toolkit. It's made for the novice in all of us.... Works great, self updates, awesome help section.. Look into it.. It's made specifically for the nexus line of products
Thanks for the replies guys, but noone seems to say what is the minimum that neds to be done for rooting.
I'll re-ask my question in a different way:
When rooting, does the bootloader always have to be unlocked and a custom recovery always needed to be installed?

Bootloader needs to be be unlocked, but can be relocked after rooting
AFAIK, you can use stock recovery, but custom offers better options/control over the situation. Most roms/kernels are flashed via twrp or cwm..... You can flash through rom toolbox if you choose to stay stock recovery
You can use Towel root to root your tablet in about 30 seconds. It'll also unlock your bootloader for you.
Cousin recovery is only needed of you intend to flash kernels and Roms and the like. If, like me, you only want root for installing things like xposed then you don't need to bother with one.

Yes, all the steps that are listed are required for rooting your Nexus. I understand what you are asking and I was also hesitant at first, but it was super easy to root and I didnt use the WugFresh took kit I manually rooted mine, following Zedomaxs Video tutorial, that way I could stop and Pause it at every step to make sure things were happening as they should here is the link
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X1cD-JXRGX8
I confirm towelroot works on the 2013 nexus 7. After rooting unlock bootloader with app from google play. This method does not wipe user data or need a computer at all. And if root is lost and the towelroot exploit is patched with the next os update you can reroot the old way.
