Hey,
Looking for a music app to manage my music with that'll sync with my Desire.
I dual boot windows and ubuntu, so it doesn't matter which platform the software is for.
I know Windows media player will do it - but I don't like using it.
Really like itunes - but the current itunes software sync hacks are still pretty buggy - so am looking for an alternate app
Any recommendations would be great.
Cheers!

Saw that one nad would like to give it a go - but there's no way I can buy the $2.99 app as I only have a UK Maestro which is no longer accepted by google checkout (used to be!)

Hmmm... will have to have a look in to that - haven't used winamp in a while, but might be worth getting acquainted with it again - used to like it

The best for me, Media Monkey !
I'm liking double twist... syncs well with the desire, general playback is quite good and it has access to all my favourite podcasts
mediamonkey syncing works but isn't too brilliant with this phone... and it can't find my podcasts :S
Winamp next
You say that the current itunes sync hacks are buggy but I use a program called Itunes Agent that works great for me. To quote from their website:
"ITunes Agent is a tiny application which rests in your system tray, constantly looking for devices being connected to your system. If a device it recognizes is connected it enables you to manage it via a playlist in iTunes...When you are done modifying the list of tracks for your player you can synchronize it with two small mouse-clicks!"
Im already sold on Windows Phone 7 ill be getting one as soon as verizon launches a htc phone with a big screen and keyboard, but i was wondering if i go to download the zune software now will this be the same software compatible with the phones? and is there anything we can do now with our phones or mp3 collection with the software now in preparation? like add album artwork or anything with the zune software? im trying to get use to the software before the phones launch

the current downloadable vers of zune does not support wp7 however zune client will inform you of the new update with wp7 included.. with that said i would go ahead and install it to add all your music, videos and pics it is truly the best music, video client i have ever seen light years ahead of that lame itunes and it does not recopy your music and use up all of your hd space recopying all your music.
Yes, you should definitely install it. It's awesome software with or without Windows Phone.

Agree with you. It can be a replacement of windows media player. of course, I am using it now, even though i did not own zune device. great performance, quick start up than windows media player, nicer, more functionalities and one most important function which is you can set and add your own media folder to the Zune player.
Scenario: if you placed all your music in the desk top "music folder", you can add this directory into zune and zune will recognise them and add them into your music playlist without create a new database like itunes did.
Give it a try...I'm sure you will like it...
i just downloaded it and its asking for a account in order to play specific content what kind of account do i need to make?
edit: does it matter if i use a aol or hotmail/msn account to register with zune

I didn't experienced this scenario before. however, i think it is doesn't matter you use which account, but it's more convenient if you use hotmail....because both are Microsoft products and there should be a mutual link between them and easy for you to remember the password when you use microsoft's products.
just to update u guys i downloaded it and its AMAZING never had a zune before but this interface is amazing and you can burn cds with this as well i will be using this over windows media player from now on havent tried burning a cd yet.
for those with a zune player are u able to get album art like u can on the desktop version? i wonder if we will be able to get album art with the wp7 version

LOVE IT i've been playing music all day and night lol never did that with windows media player i even played it and fell asleep
I enjoy using the Smart DJ feature in Zune. It is similar to Pandora in some ways. Really looking forward to WP7 I just hope the battery life can handle my music playing.

Wow, really? thats cool...thanks for your information...It would be nice, when using 3G or Wifi to grab album art...without access to PC.
OP I was thinking the same thing, and I did install Zune.
My thoughts;
It looks cool, the interface is 'fresh' and makes iTunes look dated.
But the biggest problem is that I can't seem to managed the actual files and can't 'show in explorer'. That's a real problem for me as I let itunes organise my music so my file structure is a nightmare to actually edit files outside of using itunes to browse. (any tips)
I also find it quite slow, (1.3ghz 2g RAM), which was disappointing. If I had a better PC it might be better.
I think I may stick to iTunes, its not a big deal to sync as a phone is only going to hold ~10g anyway.

I don't think it will do that (unless you buy something from the Marketplace or use a Zune Pass). But it definitely does pull down all sorts of info like artist bios and other artwork/pictures. It might rely on being properly categorized/labeled first when it's been synced in which the Zune software will take care of for the most part. Also, when you plug your phone into any power, it can hop on your WiFi connection automatically and sync wirelessly.

as long as the song have the correct title, album and artist it will get the album art. no zune pass needed. it works just like the desktop vers.
shouldnt there be a zune upgrade sometime this week or on monday since the official launch of windows phone 7 will be takin place monday?

Seems like a reasonable assumption, but since there won't actually be any phones available until the end of the month we might have to wait for the new ZUNE software until then.
can anyone tell me what movie formats the hd7 supports?

It depends on the Zune software, it converts video files on the fly

Here is a full list.
I would like to add that the transcoding or reencoding done by Zune is buggy! But luckily there is a way around that! ... someone should bring this to MS attention.
A solution to this issue can be found here:

Idk why wp7 doesn't support DivX. My Zune does, it didn't when it was first released but it did after a update from ms.

Theres already cloud storage for music on ios and theres google music already but theres still no official skydrive music or whatever from microsoft what gives here? are they going to do anything cloud storage related for music with wp7:
Great
You just gave me idea for a new app, thanks... I just hope I will have some free time to code it, currently I'm developing another app "use your phone as a hidden camera", to be published this weekend

Try Anemoplayer. Its more proof of concept at this point but once the developer implements playlists and background support you'll be streaming on the go

Should be able to shut the screen off , and still able to take the picture *sliently* haha.
Alright, back to the main point.
Skydrive allow you to have 2GB Free... would be nice to have music up there but i mean like, is it really necessary? because i never filled my 16GB with Apps and Music.
This is puzzling. Zune is by far the best streaming service of all three OSes. You can listen to anything. iOS is limited to what you have in your collection. Google Music is the stupidest thing on Earth - why would anyone want to upload their own stuff and then stream it from there? Why would anyone choose that over Zune Pass?

Yeah, that's true. I'm using it here but I agree, it's not easy and most people wouldn't do it.
Still uploading your own stuff to the cloud and listening from there sounds weird to me. The value in Zune Pass isn't the fact that stuff is streamed, and that's the only thing that is similar in Google Music.

I agree, Zune pass is the best of the three services. Although you have to pay for it.
On a side note, has anyone set up a Windows Home Server? I downloaded an app to connect to my server and now I can stream my personal music collection directly off of it. Zune Pass + personal collection on Home Server = endless music.
I have a Windows Home Server at home and that's where I store stuff including music. But I don't stream it from there though. The main problem with streaming is battery drain. It's much more practical to just copy music to the phone. If it had more generous storage I would have to do it just once.

If you have Tk's walkman app, you can use dlna to stream music from phone to windows media player. Have a look here http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&s...xYHACw&usg=AFQjCNFH62C5C2o2rLmqxnHcqEzQbPz_IA
