Google Voice options - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I like Google Voice, but I don't want to integrate for a few reasons. That said, I wondered if it is possible to accomplish the following:
I have Google Voice currently set up to prompt me at every call if I want to use Google Voice to make that call. Is there a way to make it that when I call certain numbers it will know that I always want it to use Google Voice, and when I call other numbers I want it to automatically know that I don't want it to use Google voice, then ask me for the rest?
ALSO, since I am NOT using Google Voice integrated, I was curious of the following in regards to the Sprint free mobile to mobile plan.
If someone calls me on my Google Voice number (from a mobile number), I have it automatically simultaneously ring a land line and cell phone. If I pick the call up on the cell phone, is that considered a mobile to mobile call for me?
What about the other person (they have Sprint).

The answer to the first question is no. There's no way to do that automatically with gv as it stands. There might be a way to work around it, but it would be complicated with what we have now.
The answer to your second question is that Sprint looks at gv like any other mobile number, and it doesn't matter whether the gv call originates or is answered on a land line, Sprint considers it all mobile-to-mobile.

According to my bill this isn't so. I have free mobile to mobile, and all calls TO my GV number are charged as land line calls. All calls FROM my phone to another mobile are considered mobile to mobile.

Hmm. That's weird. Is your gv number integrated? Mine is, and all my calls bill as you wold expect. Mobile phones calling me are billed as mobile, land lines are billed as land lines. But, when I use gv to call my wife from my work phone, it's billed as mobile on her end, even though I'm calling from a land line.

If you go into Google Voice's options, under "Making Calls", you can select "Ask every time I make a call."
Google Voice calls operate on the phone network, not data. Additionally, it uses a different access number every time, to make sure you can't put it on any faves/friends&family/etc lists. One way to get around this is to use an app called Google Voice Callback. However, Google is quick to remove any app from the market that gets around Voice's minute usage. You can find it on the Amazon Appstore.

So to clarify a couple of things.
I do NOT have GV integrated. That is intentional, and I like it this way.
I know about asking each time I make a call, which is how I have it set, but instead of asking for every single call I was wondering if I could set defaults for some contacts so it didn't ask me. As some contacts I want to ALWAYS call using GV and some contacts I want to NEVER call using GV.
So, it seems that when people call my GV number it is treated as a land line call.
What if I call someone on Sprint using GV from my cell phone. On their phone my GV number shows up. Is that considered mobile to mobile for either of us???

My experience has been that any calls via GV on a non integrated phone is considered a landline.

Can someone tell me if I use Google does it take away from my mins bc I still have to use my line to call Google and rate plan was changed so I do need to make some free calls
SENT FROM THE EVO
2 part answer.
Call forwarding is free with I'm pretty sure all EVO plans on sprint, therefore using the google voice app for voicemail uses data and is free. ( you have to dial *28-your google voice number to set it up).
Using google voice to place calls (I call canada for free daily on it), definitely uses minutes unless... You get Sprint to give you " 3 free numbers / landlines" to call and them you don't accrue minutes for those (home, work etc...). You then just make one of your free numbers your google voice number and then all calls placed through google voice will be free too (no minute accrual).
The only problem is that last time I called customer retention, they said they were no longer offering that option (vs. Verizon, att and others that I believe still do -not confirmed)
Either way, GV is a great low cost way to call international from your cell
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Sprint does offer an option called "Sprint To Home" which lets you pick 1 number to call unlimited. It costs $5 extra a month. Also, when you sign up (you have to call customer service) they tell you that you cannot use it with any service that will allow you to re-route your calls (i.e. Google Voice). Of course, I don't think they actually check on the number you provide them, but I'm sure if all your calls came to/from this number and you were using 1000 minutes a month, a red flag is going to go off somewhere.
Basically, stop trying to cheat the system. If you need a ton of minutes, get the Unlimited plan.
Lol Google number is always different when u place a call so I guess my answer is no can't be done

google voice is using data. as long as you have unlimited data you can do away with using minutes too much if that is your issue. so yes it will say you minutes because its using your mobile data and google voice gives you free calls anywhere in the us and only 10cents a min internation
hope that helps?

OK - 2 different issues
GV for the voicemail is using data and therefore unlimited.
Phone/Voice calls do not use data, they use minutes. The GV dialer dials an access number (which changes every few months) to place calls and therefore it DOES use minutes. The changing access number makes it generally impractical to change one of your "pick 5 / Favorite number" every few months.
But it can be done.
use the following format to add a telephone number in each contact that you want to use for GV (ie international)
you GV number,,your pin,,2,,the number you want to dial#
the "," is for a 2 second pause (depending which ROM you are using, it sometimes needs to be a "p")
the "#" tells GV that you are done with the number and place the call.
albeit labor intensive to setup, but it works I do it every day.
Also last point,
GV is NOT 10 cents/ min all international
as mentioned Canada is free (which is why I use this method even without the saving minutes issue)
the rates are VOIP like and can be found by logging into your google voice account and looking up "Rates"
Isn't Google Voice just VOIP?
Yes.
For obvious reasons integrates well with android and there is no access fee.
Just add money through your google checkout acct and you are golden!

Question about Google Voice.

I'm just now getting into using Google voice as it seems to be an awesome way for me to call my customers and keep them from having my real number and calling me at crazy times..
So here's my question.Sprint has unlimited mobile to mobile. While using Google voice does it go against my minutes?...For example,if I were to use my regular number to call my fiancée cell phone it would be free.Would it still be free if I used GV to my fiancée cell phone?
I really don't want to go overboard with using this thigh if its going to count towards my minutes. Thanks for any help you can give me.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
I believe it still uses your minutes, ie cell phone will be free, land lines will cost against anytime minutes.
Sent from my HTC Evo 4g
Here's what I can tell you from my own observations, but I could be wrong:
Google Voice numbers, both actual account numbers (ie, your GV number), and the access numbers (the numbers you call and/or are called by when you make a call via GV or someone calls your GV number, respectively), are all considered landlines.
Now, you can set up your GV settings on the website, so when someone calls you, it will either show their number, or your GV number. If you have it set to the former (show their number), and they call you from a cellphone, it will count as a call from a cellphone.
If you were to set it so the caller ID shows your GV# when someone calls you, it would count as a landline call, and therefore, against your minutes. When you call someone, what really happens is that GV calls your phone from one of their access numbers, and then connects that call to your destination. Because of that, it's counted as an incoming call from a landline, and thus does count against your minutes.
Finally, if you call someone or are called by someone who has their GV settings so that it shows their GV# on the recepient's caller ID, then it will count against the recipient as a landline call, not a cellphone call.
I hope someone corrects me if I am mistaken.
Google Voice works perfect on AT&T. I have an Android on AT&T and added my GV number to my A-List (kind of like a fave 5) so when I use GV it counts as an unlimited call.

Kinda related and i dont want to hijack the thread, but..
My Girlfriend wants to cancel her voice plan and use google voice to make free calls with her gv number, is this possible for free? or will she get charged by her company because google voice is wasting minutes. or if the calls are being made over the 3g/wifi
Hopefully this can answer OP's question also.

Google voice isn't voip... you actually need service for it to dial out...
Call Sprint tell customer care you want "phone to home" for $5 give the rep your Google vice number. Now you can make and receive unlimited calls to that number but you have to have the setting in Google voice show your GV number on caller ID. Post any questions I will check back to this thread.

Google Voice and an outrageous phone bill!

I just got my bill from sprint and umm HOLY CRAP! 911 bucks. Evidently since I use the google voice app to make all my calls Sprint recognizes this as a land line and I got charged for all calls. I have my google # as a free number thru sprint but the google app uses another number to forward the call. So is there a google app that calls your google number then processes it that way so it looks like you're calling your google number?

Wow, if this is real and legitimate, this needs major attention, and needs to be posted everywhere. I don't use G Voice, but I believe most people using the aosp roms and the Z ports are using google voice, and would probably really love to know about this.

Absolute Real and Unfortunately Legit! Sprint has free mobile to mobile but if you make a Google voice call you will notice a screen pops up showing you the number it's calling. I never thought about it but I had no outbound calls on my phone that I actually dialed since I use google voice for ALL my calls. Now the funny thing was I was going down the list of random numbers on my bill and I can call them and my cell phone will ring, because it was the forwarding number. Sprint is going to credit me the money but told me to delete the app they will only do this once.

*sigh* Old news is old.
By default, here's how GVoice and billing works:
IF you setup "Caller ID (incoming): Display caller's number" in the Google Voice site's settings:
Incoming call from a cellphone: Anymobile Anytime (unlimited/free)*
Incoming call from a landline: Regular (limited/not-free)*
Outgoing call to any number: Regular (limited/not-free)*
If you use Google Voice Callback from the Market, Gv will call you using your GV number.*
*Usually. Not 100% of the time guaranteed.
Also, OP, how'd you get Sprint to make your GV number free?
How many calls do you make per month? I use Google Voice all the time, even for business and have never gone over the limit.

Using Google Voice for VM

Does anyone know if you use Google voice for voicemail only, does sprint quit classifying the number as a mobile for free minutes?
Also, can you still roll your Google voice number to your cell if you use GV for voicemail?

Integrate google voice with your sprint number. Problem solved.
Sent from a CM9 powered Epic.
I know calling a Google voice number isn't included in your free cell phone minutes as they don't consider GV a cell number.
Also I know you can't forward a GV number to another GV number. I use GV for business calls. Currently I can forward to my cell when I want. I am asking if I lose that ability if I use GV for voicemail.

I believe the issue is that you and your business would share outgoing messages. That is why I do not use it for my Sprint number and only for my business number. I remember reading about the minutes issue. If you get the right supervisor, they can add 3 landline phone numbers to your account which you can call for free. I forgot what it was called but it took me to calls and a supervisor and they added it to both my lines and of course put my Google Voice number in as 1 of the numbers.
I was more concerned for all the people that call me expecting that they are calling my cell and getting a free call. I think I will just leave VM with sprint. Thanks for the info.

Yes that is a Google issue and how they are listed on each carriers' servers. I am not sure who would be responsible to fix that. I would guess Google. It needs to detect the type of device it is forwarding to and broadcast that properly to the carrier. It may be a landline that some people use, it may not be.

[Guide] Switch Verizon VVM to Google Voice and save

A few months ago I found several incomplete resources on the web to set up Google Voice as your voice mail service instead of using your carrier. In the case of Verizon, I was even more disgusted to pay $2.99 per line per month for a service that should be included with every smartphone. This guide is intended to be a more complete solution to using Google Voice as your voice mail service on Verizon.
Why Google Voice?
- Integrated FREE visual voice mail on your Galaxy Nexus (don’t pay Big Red more than you have to). Access from your call log or the Google Voice app.
- Transcripts of the message e-mailed to you (the translation is not very accurate, but you can get the main point of the message in most cases before you listen to it).
- Access your voicemail on your phone, tablet, or web browser.
Setup:
1. If you haven’t already, request a Google Voice number from http://bit.ly/obMhcy (Don't port your number, just get a new one from Google - porting your number from Verizon to Google Voice will cancel your Verizon service).
2. Once you have your Google Voice number, install the Google Voice app on your phone http://bit.ly/QDySzs
3. Once all signed in to the Google Voice app, you are ready to set up FREE visual voicemail on your Galaxy Nexus.
4. Go to your Phone app settings (not Google Voice, but the actual Phone app that makes your phone a phone). Under “Other Call Settings” is a “voicemail” option, open that. Under “Service” select Google Voice. You will get a pop up warning that your carrier cannot be autoconfigured, but just acknowledge the warning and continue on. To make this function on Verizon, you need to setup a “Number Busy/No Answer Call”, also known as conditional call forwarding by following this simple step:
Dial *71 [Your GV #] then hit Send — (*71-###-###-#### then Send)
You’ll hear a few beeps and then you’ll automatically be disconnected. This is a free Verizon calling feature that reroutes an unanswered call to the 10-digit number provided after the *71, which is your Google Voice number in this case. Make a test call to your cell phone number from another phone to make sure all is working – you can set up your personal message later.
Now, anybody that calls your cell phone (GV or regular cell number) will be redirected to your Google Voice voicemail. This way you can keep your Verizon phone number and still manage voicemail online (replay/save messages to your computer) and get transcriptions.
There are options on the Google Voice web interface to record a personal message, which can be different depending on who is calling. For example, a message for friends, one for work, etc. The Google Voice settings page is also where you set up your account to receive e-mail notifications of voicemails with transcripts, etc.
Don't forget to cancel your Verizon VVM subscription once this is complete and working, and uninstall yet another Verizon app from your Nexus device. :good:
Thanks OP! As someone who has used Google Voice for a few years I fully support this thread.
I ran this since Google Voice was in beta on VZW. No other way to have it.

And if your plan supports it, add your GV # to your Friends & Family list to make voicemail airtime free (won't use minutes)

The VMs are downloaded and stored in the app via data, you wont ever have to call VM again.
I believe you are thinking of the old trick, change the GV settings to show your GV# instead of the callers #.

Actually, I'm thinking that rather than burn data-bytes, I just reprogram the phone to call my GV# when I press and hold 1. By listing it in F&F, it's a free call, doesn't use data and works exactly like my carrier's VM.
Google voice has been working great for me for a couple months and is a huge step up from regular voicemail.... Highly recommended! Thanks for the guide.

Yeah but doesn't that defeat the purpose? If you're going to do that why not use the carriers VM? And I cant imagine that downloading a voice mail message uses much data. Oh well, to each his own.

Set up phone as per instructions, don't have to do the *71 part. I've been doing this for a couple years now, and I tend to flash a different rom a few times a week, no problems.
Really want to screw the man? Just get a free sip line hooked to your gv number. All you need is a data plan. Saves big $$$$$

Have gv ring all numbers when a call comes in. No matter which is dialed, no matter which is in use, you'll get the call. Been working that way for me for a couple years. Texting the vz number will incur a charge, but that's about it. Only extra charges I see are from those texts. No cost if texts go to gv number.
