2nd Line Possible?

Does anyone know if I can add a second line to an Evo or if I have a second sprint phone add that line to my Evo but leave the billing alone. Work phone deal so I am trying no to have to carry to Android Smart Phones.

as far as leaving the billing alone unfortunately no. unless your second phone had wifi, you had google voice and that phone always had a wifi connection. other than that its only 20$ to add a line (as long as your on the everything data plan, which you should be its the best deal). so for 20$ your second line will get any mobile anytime. unlimited data, text, pic mms. only thing that will affect your bill is if you go over your land line mins.

just register for a google voice account
and configure your phone to use it.
you will have the option of dialing out using your google voice number or just your regular number.
you can also set however many devices you have on the same number (not that you have to have 2 devices to have one number)
google voice is great!
you can even set up different voicemail greetings for each number that calls you. you can also block numbers.

Google Voice and an outrageous phone bill!

I just got my bill from sprint and umm HOLY CRAP! 911 bucks. Evidently since I use the google voice app to make all my calls Sprint recognizes this as a land line and I got charged for all calls. I have my google # as a free number thru sprint but the google app uses another number to forward the call. So is there a google app that calls your google number then processes it that way so it looks like you're calling your google number?

download google voice call back from the market and use it to make calls with your gvoice number

Wow, if this is real and legitimate, this needs major attention, and needs to be posted everywhere. I don't use G Voice, but I believe most people using the aosp roms and the Z ports are using google voice, and would probably really love to know about this.

Absolute Real and Unfortunately Legit! Sprint has free mobile to mobile but if you make a Google voice call you will notice a screen pops up showing you the number it's calling. I never thought about it but I had no outbound calls on my phone that I actually dialed since I use google voice for ALL my calls. Now the funny thing was I was going down the list of random numbers on my bill and I can call them and my cell phone will ring, because it was the forwarding number. Sprint is going to credit me the money but told me to delete the app they will only do this once.

By default, here's how GVoice and billing works:
IF you setup "Caller ID (incoming): Display caller's number" in the Google Voice site's settings:
Incoming call from a cellphone: Anymobile Anytime (unlimited/free)*
Incoming call from a landline: Regular (limited/not-free)*
Outgoing call to any number: Regular (limited/not-free)*
If you use Google Voice Callback from the Market, Gv will call you using your GV number.*
*Usually. Not 100% of the time guaranteed.
Also, OP, how'd you get Sprint to make your GV number free?

How many calls do you make per month? I use Google Voice all the time, even for business and have never gone over the limit.

Question about Sprint/EVO 4G and Google Voice.

I just re-downloaded Google Voice for my Android. I tried it a few months back but installed a new ROM and never reinstalled it.
I decided I wanted to be able to use my Google Voice number again so I re-downloaded it and when I went to set it up, Google Voice tells me they have partnered with Sprint and it's asking me if I want to do the fully intergrated install for Sprint OR the standard Google Voice install.
What is the difference?
I've waited to set it up because I don't want it to take over my phone until I know what I'm getting myself into!

Maybe if I tell you guys WHAT I want GVoice for, you can tell me what option to use.
I want to use Google voice to hide my Sprint number. I want to be able to give out a number that people CAN call me on, without them knowing my real Sprint number, and if I return their calls, I only want them to see my GVoice number.
I also like the idea of being able to block numbers in GVoice so the caller thinks my number is no longer in service which I see you can do.

If you ibtergrate with sprint, your sprint telephone number can be used as your google number! One number for both.
If you want to use a seperate number for google then do this.
1. Log into google voice from computer.
2. Click on your number in top right hand corner.
3. Select phones
4. Deactivate google voice on your number.
Done!!! 2 numbers.

So then it completely defeats the purpose of using Google Voice? Everyone I know uses Google Voice to mask their cellphone providers number.
Everyone I know uses it to be anonymous. I mean I know Google knows what your real number is so like you wouldn't want to call in any bomb threats but everyone I know uses Google Voice as a disposable number. For example, bill collectors or Craigslist ads etc.

If you intergrate you may also use your google number as your number. Sorry for not explaining that!

When you install, choose use my google number and callers will see your google number. You can always change this.

OK so what does the integration do exactly then because I can use my Google Voice number without integrating and just doing the standard setup.
I'm kinda lost as to what it does exactly. Like what the point it.

Your google number is a landline, so if you intergrate, your cell makes the call but shows the landline nuber, as opposed to calling ftom the google number without intergration wich uses landline minutes!!

So if if you dont have the simply everything plan and intergrate your caller id just displays your google voice wich saves landline minutes because your calling from your cell and displaying your google number.

Im in the same boat as the OP. I just reinstalled CM7 from scratch & when I installed GV, I had the same options.
I really just use GV for the voicemail integration. I wouldnt mind being able to setup custom greetings for family members, I guess the text being saved on google is a good thing (though a little scary).
I just dont get what the point of it is if I already have a GV number (which I dont use except for voicemail).
I just dont see the benefit of porting except for the GV being the one stop phone number I give out with some blocking features.
My bigger concern is if I wanted to leave GV or sprint, how that gets handled, or what rights i am signing over to google on my information.
Any ideas on where to find more info?

You have to pay to keep your GVoice number, though.
Integration is great for those of us who want the GVoice features (texting and voicemail from the app and web) without a separate GVoice number that everyone has to learn. I love having access to my texts from a browser, and can call people from my netbook and it shows up as my cell number.
Yes, you can do that without integration too, but this way I didn't have to teach everyone a new number. I've had my mobile number for over six years now; I don't want to get a new one.

What happens if you leave sprint? Does Google 'own' your voicemails? Does your texts go through the native app, or in the google voice app?

You can de-integrate your number. I imagine that Google would give you another Google number at that point.

Google Voice options

So I like Google Voice, but I don't want to integrate for a few reasons. That said, I wondered if it is possible to accomplish the following:
I have Google Voice currently set up to prompt me at every call if I want to use Google Voice to make that call. Is there a way to make it that when I call certain numbers it will know that I always want it to use Google Voice, and when I call other numbers I want it to automatically know that I don't want it to use Google voice, then ask me for the rest?
ALSO, since I am NOT using Google Voice integrated, I was curious of the following in regards to the Sprint free mobile to mobile plan.
If someone calls me on my Google Voice number (from a mobile number), I have it automatically simultaneously ring a land line and cell phone. If I pick the call up on the cell phone, is that considered a mobile to mobile call for me?
What about the other person (they have Sprint).

The answer to the first question is no. There's no way to do that automatically with gv as it stands. There might be a way to work around it, but it would be complicated with what we have now.
The answer to your second question is that Sprint looks at gv like any other mobile number, and it doesn't matter whether the gv call originates or is answered on a land line, Sprint considers it all mobile-to-mobile.

According to my bill this isn't so. I have free mobile to mobile, and all calls TO my GV number are charged as land line calls. All calls FROM my phone to another mobile are considered mobile to mobile.

Hmm. That's weird. Is your gv number integrated? Mine is, and all my calls bill as you wold expect. Mobile phones calling me are billed as mobile, land lines are billed as land lines. But, when I use gv to call my wife from my work phone, it's billed as mobile on her end, even though I'm calling from a land line.

If you go into Google Voice's options, under "Making Calls", you can select "Ask every time I make a call."
Google Voice calls operate on the phone network, not data. Additionally, it uses a different access number every time, to make sure you can't put it on any faves/friends&family/etc lists. One way to get around this is to use an app called Google Voice Callback. However, Google is quick to remove any app from the market that gets around Voice's minute usage. You can find it on the Amazon Appstore.

So to clarify a couple of things.
I do NOT have GV integrated. That is intentional, and I like it this way.
I know about asking each time I make a call, which is how I have it set, but instead of asking for every single call I was wondering if I could set defaults for some contacts so it didn't ask me. As some contacts I want to ALWAYS call using GV and some contacts I want to NEVER call using GV.
So, it seems that when people call my GV number it is treated as a land line call.
What if I call someone on Sprint using GV from my cell phone. On their phone my GV number shows up. Is that considered mobile to mobile for either of us???

My experience has been that any calls via GV on a non integrated phone is considered a landline.

[Guide] Switch Verizon VVM to Google Voice and save

A few months ago I found several incomplete resources on the web to set up Google Voice as your voice mail service instead of using your carrier. In the case of Verizon, I was even more disgusted to pay $2.99 per line per month for a service that should be included with every smartphone. This guide is intended to be a more complete solution to using Google Voice as your voice mail service on Verizon.
Why Google Voice?
- Integrated FREE visual voice mail on your Galaxy Nexus (don’t pay Big Red more than you have to). Access from your call log or the Google Voice app.
- Transcripts of the message e-mailed to you (the translation is not very accurate, but you can get the main point of the message in most cases before you listen to it).
- Access your voicemail on your phone, tablet, or web browser.
Setup:
1. If you haven’t already, request a Google Voice number from http://bit.ly/obMhcy (Don't port your number, just get a new one from Google - porting your number from Verizon to Google Voice will cancel your Verizon service).
2. Once you have your Google Voice number, install the Google Voice app on your phone http://bit.ly/QDySzs
3. Once all signed in to the Google Voice app, you are ready to set up FREE visual voicemail on your Galaxy Nexus.
4. Go to your Phone app settings (not Google Voice, but the actual Phone app that makes your phone a phone). Under “Other Call Settings” is a “voicemail” option, open that. Under “Service” select Google Voice. You will get a pop up warning that your carrier cannot be autoconfigured, but just acknowledge the warning and continue on. To make this function on Verizon, you need to setup a “Number Busy/No Answer Call”, also known as conditional call forwarding by following this simple step:
Dial *71 [Your GV #] then hit Send — (*71-###-###-#### then Send)
You’ll hear a few beeps and then you’ll automatically be disconnected. This is a free Verizon calling feature that reroutes an unanswered call to the 10-digit number provided after the *71, which is your Google Voice number in this case. Make a test call to your cell phone number from another phone to make sure all is working – you can set up your personal message later.
Now, anybody that calls your cell phone (GV or regular cell number) will be redirected to your Google Voice voicemail. This way you can keep your Verizon phone number and still manage voicemail online (replay/save messages to your computer) and get transcriptions.
There are options on the Google Voice web interface to record a personal message, which can be different depending on who is calling. For example, a message for friends, one for work, etc. The Google Voice settings page is also where you set up your account to receive e-mail notifications of voicemails with transcripts, etc.
Don't forget to cancel your Verizon VVM subscription once this is complete and working, and uninstall yet another Verizon app from your Nexus device. :good:

The VMs are downloaded and stored in the app via data, you wont ever have to call VM again.
I believe you are thinking of the old trick, change the GV settings to show your GV# instead of the callers #.

Actually, I'm thinking that rather than burn data-bytes, I just reprogram the phone to call my GV# when I press and hold 1. By listing it in F&F, it's a free call, doesn't use data and works exactly like my carrier's VM.

Google voice has been working great for me for a couple months and is a huge step up from regular voicemail.... Highly recommended! Thanks for the guide.

Yeah but doesn't that defeat the purpose? If you're going to do that why not use the carriers VM? And I cant imagine that downloading a voice mail message uses much data. Oh well, to each his own.

Set up phone as per instructions, don't have to do the *71 part. I've been doing this for a couple years now, and I tend to flash a different rom a few times a week, no problems.
Really want to screw the man? Just get a free sip line hooked to your gv number. All you need is a data plan. Saves big $$$$$

[SOLVED] disabled through app now I can send through either. The two different numbers are messing with my peeps, I have had the same number for years. Plus when you look below the surface there can be charges

Have gv ring all numbers when a call comes in. No matter which is dialed, no matter which is in use, you'll get the call. Been working that way for me for a couple years. Texting the vz number will incur a charge, but that's about it. Only extra charges I see are from those texts. No cost if texts go to gv number.

Texting through Google voice is a nightmare. This thread's purpose was to show folks how stop paying Verizon for the ability to have visual voice mail on your smartphone.

Thanks for this! Had no idea I could even change the voicemail to something else. I got so tired of the voicemail icon constantly making my notification light blink since I never check it. Hell, I had no idea verizon even offered a visual voicemail service. +1Google

Youmail.. The best free visual voicemail ..use on all my phones and tabs.. And best of all works perfect and simple to setup
