hello all had my desire for a good few months now, totally clean unbranded device. Now after quietly perusing these forums for a while i feel the next best thing i could do is flash it with a custom rom, i am drawn towards leedroid 2.3c, however i would like some advice first from the experts....All You.
is leeddroid a good stable rom with all the feature that i currently have on a stock desire?
what is the simplest way to flash?
do i have to do anything prior to a flash? ie backup anything, or make a backup of my stock system? if so how? i have xp in iphones and nothing needed to be done there just plug in and flash?
i need a simple guide
many thanks
Before you do anything, go to Settings>About phone>Software information and make a note of the 'Software version' number and post it up on here. We'll go from there...
android version 2.2
baseband version 32.49.00.32u_5.11.05.27
software number 2.29.405.5
Right, awesome. You're totally unbranded so that's a good thing!!
First thing, download the RUU for that ROM so you can go back to stock should you need to. Get it from:
http://shipped-roms.com/download.ph...9.00.32U_5.11.05.27_release_159811_signed.exe
If that link fails to download then get it from:
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...Y-6AY_5A3EXnBSZIg&sig2=ToMSUjUY0tdbmxGYNI13-w
Or
http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&so...cZlrId8Dkc9IAPJsg&sig2=upnnZhtKGWqyen3hhAeVvA
After that you can look at rooting the phone. I just re-rooted my phone on 2.29.405.5 using unrEVOked 3.31 and it work fine. You can get it here:
http://unrevoked.com/recovery/
Once rooted, go look at the different ROMs available and take you're pick!!
There you go about rooting the phone from EddyOS.
Leedroid is a newbie friendly rom, it is stable, fast (faster than the original), has relatively better battery life than the original and everything is working, not to mention, it is also a Sense rom, just like your original rom.
So, yes! Leedroid is a good pick to start.
Note:
---- IMPORTANT----
1. The first thing you might want to do directly right after rooting is to create a nanddroid bckup and copy the bckup into your pc directly after creating it.. Do it before flashing, formatting, creating partition, or anything else.
---------END----------------
2. You might also need a card reader and a software such as partition wizard, gparted, or similar to create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.
brilliant thanks for the links and tips, is there any particulat software i need to perform this "create a nanddroid bckup"
Once rooted the custom recovery has the nandroid function in it
Have a read of this, should help explain things:
http://androidforums.com/desire-all-things-root/221212-faq-rooting.html
Hey eddyos many thanks for taking the time to answer.
now i take it i do not need to make a gold card as my phone is unbranded, so my steps to take are :-
a. root...using unrevoked
b. nandroid backup...using clockworkmod recovery supplied with unrevoked
c. flash whatever rom i choose.
now once i have done step b. do i store this backup on my pc? if so whats it gonna be called and where will it be on the desire
in order to flash a rom, where do i put the rom i download to flash to the htc? on the memoery card?
once i have done c i am no longer able to get stock updates.
once i have done c do i need to set up anything so my phone can make calls or access the internet etc, or does it behave like a new phone out the box and you whack in the info it asks for ie google account stuff.
once again many thanks
The Nandroid is stored on your SD card. You can make a backup of this on your PC should you wish.
Once rooted you can no longer get OTA updates so you'd need to update your ROM as (and if) the dev does so
You download the ROM file and stick it anywhere on the SD card as you can browse for the ZIP in recovery.
The phone should go through a setup and automatically set the APN but if not you can manually add it using the operator details on their website
cool many thanks m8 for your time, now its just down to me to select a rom.
m last bit of info i need for now is looking in the android development bit there are various roms etc, some say rom, froyo sense, aosp kernal etc. been a novice/virgin i have no idea what these titles mean, i assume i should just stick to anything that has rom next to it?
is anyone able to reccomend a beginers rom that i can try out
? whats this all about?
create an EXT partition in your SD Card since most of the custom roms will need it. Create the EXT partition before flashing.
how big should the partition be? 512mb
As it has been said before Leedroid is a very good start. The latest version should be the Leedroid 2.3c.
Try that one out and play a little while before trying to flash other ROMs.
EXT partition is needed for A2SD/A2SD+ ROMs (do not play around with D2EXT/D2SD at the moment, you are not ready yet for this).
A2SD means Apps to SD, means more apps can be installed since they don't go to your very limited internal memory.
Make 2 partitions on your SD card but be sure to copy everything inside the SD card to your PC just to be sure before making arrangement for those partitions.
First create a FAT32 partition for your datas ( such as music, videos, etc.) as the first partition, set it as primary and then create a 512-2GB EXT2/3/4 (I recommend1GB EXT 2 or 3 at the moment) as the second partition, set it as primary.
Be sure to have the EXT partition after the FAT32.
Windows can only see the first partition, that is where you are going to put bck all the files you have copied from the SD card before making all of those partitions.
Interesting thread as I am considering doing the same. Main reason for me is the clash between HTC Sense and the bluetooth stack not allowing for a bluetooth keyboard. Any particular rom recommendations for this - Leedroid, Cyanogen?

FroYo = Android 2.2 (what you're currently on)
Gingerbread = Android 2.3
AOSP = Android Open Source Project )ROM built from the source code and now ported from another device)
As for EXT, I have a 1GB (1024MB) one and it serves me well
i am using leedroid for sometime now 512 MB EXT3-4 partition is more than enough i have 110 apps installed and still have 351MB free
once again many thanks for the replies.
what is the simplest prog to use to create the partitions? scrap that just used minitool partition magic i have an old 1gig card am gonna try will that be ok?
i have a fat32 partition size 533mb set as primary and a 362mb ext3 partition does it matter if the fat32 primary partition has a name?
looking at leedroid i think i need to install 2.3b before i can install the latest 2.3c
You can either do it in the recovery (I use Amon RA as mine but I think CWM does it too now). Otherwise you're better off downloading a GParted Live CD, boot your PC from that and then partition the card
When you're rooting Desire, have a look at good ol' turkeh's guide. Not only you have an excellent root tutorial, but you also learn how to properly flash ROMs, how to create and restore a system backup, how to backup apps, how to create ext partitions to enable app2sd and how to unroot the phone in case you need your warranty back.
Note: when performing the s-ff process (for data2sd), read carefully what it says and be aware that it can brick your phone if not done properly.
Turkey's guide is OK but is out of date somewhat, could do with updating to include the newer versions on unrEVOked
Hi everyone.
The first thing I'm going to say is I have honestly only rooted/flashed a phone (GalaxySII) once before and that was with the help of my friend hovering over my shoulder telling me what to click and I have no clue what the heck I'm doing.
I have a Galaxy Gio GT-S5660M and I want to put CyanogenMod 7.2 on it. I've already managed to root it and I've put Clockwork Recovery on it. Here's the thing: I've noticed that there are several different types of CM7.2... (Miracle, Apocalypse, etc.) Which one should I use? In addition, can you use CM7.2 with a2sd darktremor? If not, is there still a way to partition the SD card for more internal memory?
Also, I have absolutely no clue where to go from here. I need someone to literally explain like I'm five how to do this. I have a decent knowledge of computers (less than some but probably more than most) so I'm not entirely daft on the subject but I'm quite honestly petrified to go any further than this point because I really don't want to brick my phone. (I have a spare LG Eclypse but I just don't want to have to get to that point.)
So, there you have my plea. I'm really eager to learn how to do this but I just need a bit of mentoring. I've searched the forums and I can't really find anything as in-detail as I'd like. Any and all help is appreciated.
cm7 is well.... cm7
miracle/apocalypse are pretty much cm7 with graphical/other tweaks and changes, but its based on cm7 (by phiexz)
if you want the latest cm7 you can download it at phiexz.com i recommend that one, its more pure and you can add the changes you like
do you know how to flash a rom? put it on sd card, go to recovery mode (home/power) then wipe data/cache then install zip and choose rom, then DONT REBOOT YET, wipe data and cache one more time and it will boot up nicely
and regarding the a2sd, im not sure, but i use link2sd, which is pretty much the same thing but its easier to use
partition your sd card if you havent done so (will lose everything on it so backup first if necessary) . you can use mini partition wizard, but i used clockwork recovery ( go to recovery, advanced, partition sd card, and it will ask you the size if i remember correctly, so choose based on your needs, i used 2gb because i install alot of apps and have a 32gb sd card).
using link2sd is as easy as this: install the app from market (need root of course but you should at least know this, if you dont know what root is tell me )
grant superuser permissions, and then ti will ask you to create a mount script or something along those lines, and if you are using cm7, choose ext4, then it will tell you to reboot, so do that, then you can "link" your apps (not system apps though) to the partition
oh and i have a gts5660m too ;D (canada ftw) ;D
press thanks if i helped
edit: just remembered when partitioning sd card, you also have to choose swap size, which uses the partition as "ram" so your phone can run games betters, but will damage the sd card, i personally chose 0 for that
wow i wrote a lot ._.
any cm7 rom will do depending on your liking..as for a2sd, use any partitioning software to partition any amount of space (depending on your needs) on the sdcard to ext3/ext4 extension..then get s2e from play store..you will need to reboot your phone after you activated s2e (under the settings)
The latest Phiexz.com cm7.2 is the one i am using and is awesome.
before starting though, turn off your phone, take out the sd card, put it in its adapter and insert it into a card reader (laptop or computer)
then on computer (assuming windows) download and install minitool partition wizard and use it to create a second partion on you the sd card
ex:
first partion is fat32
second partion will be ext4 size will be up to 1 gb
when finished, insert the card back into the phone, boot to clockwordmod recovery, and install the rom
Link2sd is the best for getting more app space. It keeps the system apps on internal memory for speed, but gives you choices as to which apps you download that you want to have on the sd card...
Please experiment....you won't brick your phone

Do not advise installing
You need to find the right rom for your phone
In total, most rom-s is for s5660 and you have s5660M
Look before you install
ROMs that are not fit s5660 s5660M
Wow. This is really helpful. I was under the impression that I needed to do a bunch of stuff with ODIN though...

dont use odin on our 5660Ms i made that mistake a while back what using odin does is it changes the baseband of the phone (still not entirely sure what that is but its bad) from 5660m to 5660
only use flashable recovery zips unless the odin version is made for our canadian version

Hello everyone,
I had CM 7.1.0 on my Desire for a long time.
I used S2E to move my /app partition and another big partition (dont know name any more and cant look) to my sd-ext and it worked for a long time.
Yesterday my phone said space on the /data partition (150mb) is nearly full (warning on 15mb left) and I moved the partition to sd, too.
It said I should reboot and after the reboot my whole system was gone.
Now I have a stock CM 7.1. The home button didnt work either, I couldnt get back to home or display the task switcher, every other button still worked.
Strangely 4 apps from my previous system remained: Aldiko, Teamviewer, Tetris and little piano. Aldiko even has my whole Ebook Library from the previous system but settings and bookmarks were lost.
But I found out that my whole picture gallery is still there.
My contacts (not synced) were on the phone and now are they lost, too.
In the recovery I tried to mount all partitions, but after every reboot the sd-ext partition was still unmounted. I tried to fix permissions too. Didnt work either.
My English is not the best and I dont know if I made a mistake.
But I really need your help quickly to get back my old system.
Best Regards
If you have a nand backup just restore if from recovery.
If I had one I wouldnt ask this urgently ^^
if you want to keep all your apps and settings, this could be quite difficult.
try:
- reflashing the rom without wipe. i don't know if this will work to be honest, if your data partition has actually been moved and got corrupted, i don't know of a way to recover it.
- if possible install titanium backup, and if it can see your apps back them up, because it would be better to start all over from this point.
if neither of these methods work, then the 'easiest' way is to full wipe and start all over again (you will lose all apps + settings etc. your photos are still there because they're on the FAT32 partition of your sd card).
the problem you had is that you are still on stock hboot, so your small data partition fills up quickly. you shouldnt have to move it to sd, as it runs better/faster from internal nand memory. you had a large part of system partition unused, so so your overall objective should be to s-off and switch to cm7r2 hboot.
in summary from your position i would:
1. (make sure sd card is properly partitioned using gparted, 1-1.5GB maximum ext4 depending on number of apps you have)
2. s-off using revolutionary (think this is possible as your phone is still booting?)
3. change to cm7r2 hboot
4. boot into recovery, format all partitions except sd card (format system, data, sd-ext, cache, dalvik...everything so clean)
5. install rom
6. install S2E if this is your preferred method, just move apps to sd-ext.
7. restore apps if you managed to make a titanium backup
8. (if you start to run out of space again, then use S2E to move dalvik as well)
general guides for revolutionry, changing hboot etc here
in future:
- always backup your contacts to google
- i know it's easy to say this now...but have a nand backup before making big changes like this, and keep a few on your PC for safe keeping (they're stored in sdcard/clockworkmod/backup)

A Big Thank You eddiehk6!
So you think it wasnt my fault, the partition got corrupted?
Strangely my phone space (150mb) on the stock CM 7.1.0 is full.
I would like to start from scratch and try your MildWild ROM the only thing I need very badly are my contacts.
Is there a way to extract them?
Btw I already have Revolutionary S-OFF
Best regards

don't know whose fault, but moving critical data partition sounds like a bad idea anyway...
your phone space can easily fill up because it's so small, 150MB can quickly be taken up by data/dalvik cache. stock hboot is also very wasteful, you probably wouldnt have fun into this problem if you were on cm7r2 hboot.
no idea how to extract contacts out a non-booting rom. if you have an old nandroid backup you could try restoring it to extract contacts from there, that's the only way i can think of. when you sync your contacts with google you'll discover how useful it is for situations like this...
at least you are already s-off so relatively easy from here.
not "my" rom lol, but i like it!
- change to cm7r2 hboot
- full wipe all partitions except sd
- install rom
- read OP for setting up app2sd by default (assuming you have correctly partitioned sd card with gparted or 4ext recovery)
regardless of what ROM you decide, use an app like 'diskusage' to check how all your partitions are being used, very useful for troubleshooting "low space" issues
Hi everybody!
I've a Desire with stock rom 2.3 (and no root yet) and it worked fine until last week.
If I try to install a new app I receive an error about free memory space. I've already try to move all apps to sd but nothing, I can't install anything.
I've try also to do an hard reset and fully wipe/factory reset (from recovery) and for a while it seems to works, but if I install some apps the problem come back.
Why? What can I do?
A friend suggest that maybe there are some directory in filesystem from older app (now unistalled) and, since I haven't root permession, I can't remove them. With root permission can I fix it?
Thanks!
I flashed a custom rom on my desire which used the sd card as internal storage. Problem solved.
Verstuurd van mijn GT-I9505 met Tapatalk
Read this guide to s-off, and install a custom recovery
Use this guide to create a 1gb ext4 partition on your sd card. No swap.
Download a custom rom from the htc desire dev section and flash it. I would recommend milwilds redux rom. It will automatically install apps to the parittion and you will have space.
thanks for reply!
I'd like to fix this problem without flash new rom, eventually with root only. It's possible?
When I bought this there was space enough, why now I haven't? Factory reset does not erase all partition and sistems directories?
Thanks!
Also, before you flash the Rom, best to flash recommended hboot if necessary, read the first post or search each thread.
This way you use your internal memory more efficiently.

Factory reset only deletes user data.
When you bought it, you didn't have apps installed, and probably apps were smaller back then.
What are you trying to say? That you want to flash a stock rooted ROM?

Nope.
All my apps were installed somewhere in filesystem (maybe in /system?). My question is: when I do a factory reset, what I'm going to erase? Only user data in user directories, or all content of every system directory? (of course, not system files).
I'm only trying to understand why when I bought the phone I've a "lot" of space for my app and now, after a factory reset, I've not enough free space to install more then 2/3.
Example: I wipe/fr, reboot and config the phone; then I try to install Ruzzle (16Mb),Whatsapp (9Mb) and FB(18Mb). Now if I try to install any other apps I get the alert message of free space. Same error if I try to record a video or take a photo.
I think there is something wrong..
I hope that you can read and understand what I'm writing, my english is a little rusty

A factory reset will wipe /data, dalvik cache and /cache.
When did you buy your phone? I remember that, when I first bought my Desire, facebook was only 8mbin size, and moved to sd, it only took 2 mb of internal memory. Plus, large apps require large dalvik cache. That's why your memory gets filled so easily.
You can resolve easily and keeping your stock ROM (but you'll need a FAST microSD card, my 32GB is class 10):
1) Root and s-off your device
2) Format your microSD with an EXT2, EXT3 or EXT4 partition of 1GB, then the rest as FAT32 (you can do it directly from phone using the 4ext recovery, or you can format the card from PC using a tool for partitioning which supports linux formats... I don't know if I can mention names in this thread).
3) Install INT2EXT or INT2EXT+ from recovery.
4) You'll have 1GB internal memory with no out-of-space problems.
That's all
Stock kernel doesn't support ext4 nor ext3, use only ext2 if u want to keep it.
Anyway, I believe that supernova ROM would be a much better option, it's basically stock GB made by HTC with some tweaks and script for more space.
Thanks for replies!
I still do not understand why I've no memory for apps after a factory reset; if I wipe all data, I restore all space, like when I bought the phone. Ok, apps are bigger than 2 years ago, but not so bigger that with 3 apps I occupy all space!
Anyway I'm considering to upgrade to a newer version; if I must give root permission, install tools, repartition sdcard and so on, I might as well to flash a newer version.
Curiosity: are there filesystem directories that are not intrested from a wipe? Differently, which directories will not wiped during a factory reset?
Thank you very much!

yes what your seeing is caused by the apps being a lot bigger now. Facebook is a lot bigger.
And its impossible for your apps to be going to system. You'll have to root and use a2sd

So, how much memory I have?
Rom 4.x for desire has a different partitions? If I just flash a new rom (like 4.0/4.1), will I fix this problem?
Thanks!

You need a rom with an a2sd script, regardless of it being GB, ICS or JB.
Good, I will search in subforum for a new rom.
Maybe it's a bit OT, but JB rom are stable enough for daily use? Can you suggest me a JB rom with a2sd script? (or even ICS, if JB is not stable enough).
Thank you!
I use jb as a daily driver. The ROM in my sig is the most stable jb ROM I've tried. It has very few soft reboots and has decent speed. It also has a2sd. (Activated through terminal after flashing rom)
However if you really need stability, speed and reliability I would highly recommend using gingerbread. Mildwilds ROMs are great and most of them have an a2sd script as well, which is automatically activated. Try the one based on redux.

I have a similar problem to this. I own a HTC Desire that is rooted, with Clockworkmod recovery environment, and I got it running Cyanogen mod 7.2.0.1.
So I was reading around this problem, and there are several solutions. It seems the most foolproof way is to format your SD card and partition it so that you have an EXT3 partition, and a FAT32 partition as has already been suggested here.. This way you can use an app to fool your phone into thinking that it has the EXT3 partition of the SD card to use for internal storage as well as the 150MB of internal storage it comes with. I had an 8GB SD card so I did a split of 2GB for the EXT3 partition, and 6GB for storage of music, photos, etc. etc. I followed this handy guide to do it, and it worked a treat: (sorry, have been unable to post an external link as I'm a new user.. maybe I can post this later).
When I rebooted my phone, sure enough, it showed 2GB+ of internal storage, and I can install all the apps I want. However, I'm experiencing apps hanging and crashing all the time, and I know it was caused by this most recent change. Prior to this, Cyanogenmod was running just fine! I've read a bit more into since doing this, and a lot of people reckon you shouldn't use more than a 512MB SD card partition, as anything over this causes performance issues. Others disagree, and think that anything 2GB or below should be fine. Presumably the apps hanging/crashing is because there is fragmentation of data between the SD card EXT3 partition and the actual 150MB internal storage.
It's frustrating, as other than this the phone is still a very decent handset despite it's age... it's really the storage letting it down. Before I try factory resetting (again!) and going back and trying a 512MB partition, (or just going back to having only 2 apps installed!), has any one else had experience of this?
Any help very much appreciated.

Any help very much appreciated.

well,I don't use gingerbread anymore.but I can say that you can't experience a good performance to use both internal and external (sd-ext) partitions to use and install your apps. better choice is to use one of them.use default a2sd of rom,or use another script to install apps only in sd-ext partition. I have used and tested a lot of roms (GB-ICS-JB) and I can say in my experiences, that you don't have problem to use an sd-ext partition with about 1.5 - 2 gb size.you can see the recommendation of devs in first post of topics, and they tell us what is the minimum-maximum size for the best performance. sorry,i can't search and give you the links, but I just had a really good smoothness and speed with some scripts that you can try them: like mounts2sd, ad2sdx,... you can find link of them with search. and you can use cm7 int2sd version...but it has a bigger size than normal cm7. here is this topic : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357257
@kmanpilkers
Which guide did you use to partition, should be done with gparted or 4ext recovery.
-Ext4 should also be slightly faster than ext3.
-Anything up to 2gb is sufficient. Don't know where you read about limiting it to 512mb. The whole idea is to be able to install more apps on the partition, 512mb will fill up a lot quicker than 2gb...
-you can use space more efficiently by s-off and changing hboot, so you have more than 150 MB of internal. You are currently on stock hboot and have a lot of free wasted space on your /system partition
-depending on your Rom, stick with a single a2sd script, it may be built in or need to be activated, read the Rom thread. Then let it do it's job to move apps to the partition

Thank you. I've been searching for some time
Hi all, long time lurker, first time posting.
I'm trying to work something out with my galaxy tab s, but there is a specific question I can't seem to find the answer to, and I don't to mess anything up. I got my tablet a few months ago, and flashed TWRP using the instructions in the thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/development/root-cf-autoroot-twrp-t800-t3079488 and then later installed Cyanogenmod 12.1.
One thing I didn't realize when i initially set up the device was that most apps install only to the device now, and have issues with SD card installation. I did some research and found out about creating a second partition using Aparted and linking files with link2sd (there also seems to be an option to do this in TWRP). However, most of the instructions I've found said that it will wipe the SD card.
I'm just trying to figure out whether I can create the second partition without affecting my cyanogenmod install, or will i need to plan on wiping the SD card, creating the partitions, and then reinstalling Cyanogenmod? Heck, it might be the case that Cyanogenmod was installed to the device, and not the SD card, so I wont have a problem--but better to ask then risk a brick or any other functionality issues.
Thanks very much!
You can safely wipe the sdcard without it affecting the system partition where cm is installed.
You will simply lose anything on the sdcard.
If you use a windows app such as mini partition tool you don't have to lose anything as you can simply resize the partition already on the sd card without losing data then create another in the unused space.
