I currently have the Nexus S, and I am considering an upgrade to the Galaxy Nexus. I'm trying to decide if the size of the phone will bother me (since the screen is larger, but it is slightly thinner). I've seen the phones side by side, but it is difficult to judge whether the size will be an issue until I use it for a few days.
For people that have this phone:
-Does it fit in the pocket of your jeans easily / without bothering you?
-Are you happy with the device?
From my experience, it fits comfortably in any trousers I own.
Fits perfectly in all of my trousers. You're getting used to the size after a few days. Now, I couldn't imagine a smaller phone.
And, yes, I'm very confident with the phone, it's fast, easy to handle and the screen kicks ass!

If you do so without a bulky case, then it should not be an issue, it also depends on the pants you are wearing. Tighter fit is more difficult.
Overall though, I love the new size, well worth it.
Quick answer would be:
Yes
Yes
I too came from Nexus S prior to GNex
This website is fun for this kind of thing:
http://phone-size.com/?s=3,13
I also came from a Nexus S. The GNexus fit well in the pocket and i am very happy with the device, it is a huge improvement from the Nexus S.
That said, the size of the Nexus S was perfect for me. I still can live with a bigger device, but a GNexus with 4 inches would be perfect to me.

Much, much faster. Much better screen and build quality. The Nexus S is still good, but the GNexus is a much better experience imo.

I came from a GalaxyS and agree that the 4" screen is probably the sweet spot for me, but the GNex isn't uncomfortable. Probably at the limit of what I find "acceptable" for a phone.
Regardless, it fits in my pockets just fine, and I still find myself checking my pockets to verify the phone's still in there.

Hmm... You guys may have convinced me to go ahead and buy one of these.
It looks like used Nexus S devices go for just over $200 on ebay. Mine has a very slight mark in the center of the screen that is only visible in direct sunlight, and a slight scratch at the edge of the screen (also only really visible in direct sunlight). Any idea how much I would be able to get for it?

I've had same doubts (as I'm sure many others did). And now, since I own the GN for a month, I can tell you: get it. You won't regret. You'll get used to the size quickly. This phone is by far the largest I ever had but it's so nicely balanced - just look at it's profile. It sits in my hand (average size btw) like it was specifically tailored for it. Very clever engineering: 1) shape and 2) weight distribution.

So I have waited and waited for this thing to launch. Constant out of memory issues on my ageing Desire but I have held out.
My big fear was that when this launched it would be huge.

So is this too big. Perhaps going for a Nexus S (which should get ICS soon anyway) would be the way to go but then with that big screen comes a big resolution and does that mean ICS is going to be sub par on anything with a smaller resolution display.

Just buy SGS2 then it still is the best phone out there.

The SGSII is just about the same size as the GN....maybe a TINY bit smaller...
You gotta remember that the Galaxy Nexus has no capacitive buttons, and a very small bezel along the screen. It's essentially the size of a standard 4 in phone. I wouldn't worry so much about the size.

Not a standard 4" phone. Maybe closer to a 4.3-4.4" phone.
SGSII:
125.3 mm (4.93 in) H
66.1 mm (2.60 in) W
8.49–9.91 mm (0.334–0.390 in) D
GN:
135.5 mm (5.33 in) H
67.94 mm (2.675 in) W
8.94 mm (0.352 in) D
It's bigger than the SGSII, and the SGSII is a big phone (but thin, which IMO is actually worse because it's HUGE and absurdly thin at the same time).
The typical 4" phone is quite a bit smaller, and for me, more comfortable. Although the Amaze does fit pretty nice in the hand it itself is fairly massive.
Basically, what they did was take the body of the SGSII, take out the buttons and throw a .35" larger screen in there, while making the phone itself about 10mm longer, 1mm wider and even slightly thinner than the thickest of SGSII's but towards the top end. Note that the depth measurements are at the thinnest point of each phone. The phone has the same size screen and resolution as the SGSII HD which was announced for Korea in late September.
But the GN tapers to 11mm which is thicker than the thickest point on the GSII

Lol I can't believe you're unsatisfied with your Desire... I'm still on a milestone but if you can I would say wait until the SSG3 or a newer phone with better specs if you are unsatisfied with the underwhelming specs (e.g. 4 yrs old gpu). Or if you just want a smaller phone look at the SSG2 but don't just neglect the Galaxy Nexus because of how it looks on video, when it goes on display in stores you should head to your local best buy (or whichever store will have it on display near you) and at least try it out and get a feel for the phone. Just my 2 cents

I'm with you, I think it will be too big. It might not be as big as it sounds, but it will be a large phone, and once you add a case....
If it was 1/2 an inch smaller in height I'd be robbing old people right now to get some cash together for it. But the 5+" height leaves me a little ambivalent, I really dig the form factor of my Nexus One.

Way to bump an almost yr old thread. Good job broseph:good:
Hello,
Just curious to see if anyone upgraded from a Nexus S to a Galaxy Nexus. Would love to hear thoughts and opinions, differences that stood out to you the most between the two, etc.
I did do a search for similar threads but it's difficult when the Nexus S has only 1 letter in its name. If there is a thread like this already out there, please feel free to point it out to me!
i came from NS -> GN... not much really to say, just a bigger screen size. faster (supports HSPA+).
if you have focus questions then ill be more than happy to answer them but what you're asking for is really general and thats difficult to answer.
i dont regret buying it although i do regret paying like $100+ more than what it is now. oh well.

I find that my Nexus S seems to have significant lag at times. For example, typing a URL in the browser is incredibly slow. I'm curious to know if the Galaxy Nexus has a significant improvement in performance, or just a small improvement.
Also, could you comment on the size of the two phones in everyday use? I found a lot of articles that compare the size of an iPhone 4 to the Galaxy Nexus, but that information isn't quite helpful since I would be coming from a Nexus S.
I came from a Nexus s, I found it to be laggy too.
Since ICS anyway.
Let me say that the gnex doesn't lag, not for me anyway.
It is a huge increase in performance too.
The size isn't all that much bigger than the nexus s although as you know the screen is huge!
Buying the gnex was the best decision I have ever made phone wise, buying the nexus s is the second best decision I have made phone wise!

That's what happens when someone puts next generation software on a previous generation phone. Android 2.3.X to 4.0.X is pretty significant. When I had my Nexus S, and went into settings... it would lag. But then again this was the early stages of ICS so it was probably because everything wasn't settled yet.
The size is pretty significant and will take some time getting used to. It is a lot easier to type on that's for sure, videos are better to view because of the screen size (nav screen fades away). It makes one hand typing more difficult.
Physical appearance is a lot better as well, the back is not slippery anymore. Very slim phone. Get the 2000 mah extended battery with battery cover and it will feel amazing. Better accessories as well.
Galaxy Nexus is definitely the phone of 2012 until the next Nexus device comes out. But even at that point, I might just stick with the Galaxy Nexus, it's just way too perfect as it is right now but then Google always will impress me with the next Nexus phone but I'll try to stick it out with GN
Don't forget that ICS is optimized for dual core processors. Could be the reason for any lag on the nexus s. Both good phones. G-Nex is just a step up.

it is OK, I was kinda force to upgrade by my GF, she took my NS !.
I don't find any real advantage of the bigger screen, unless you play and watch stuff in your phone.
I would prefer something around 4.3 inches.
on the Pros.
I notice much better call quality.
Radio is strong
Camera is very fast, quality wise I like both NS and GN.
Battery life with 4.0.4 is almost as good as the Nexus S.
ICS looks nice, but GB also looks nice and feels faster.
all this is IMO.
Take a look on the pics I posted:

I came from Nexus S. Biggest improvement in my opinion is the screen resolution. I loved my Nexus S's amazing Samoled display at the time. In fact it was one of my favorite features on that phone. But after a few weeks with my galaxy nexus I couldn't even bear to look at it anymore. Now I find it hideous. It's such a big difference to go from 800x480 to 1280x720. I never expected the difference to be this huge.

Pretty much. The most obvious change will be the screen resolution and display. It will take a few days getting used to how big the screen is, but once you get used to it. It makes the Nexus S' screen look so small that you can't go back.
I'm assuming this will be the same idea when it comes to the Galaxy Note too. One thing I'd like to also add, the noise isolation microphone is really good
What about battery life? Is there an improvement or is it worse? The Nexus S, in my opinion, has a great battery life for my usage. My day usually starts from 7am and I am left with about 15% at the end of the day around 11pm-12am.

Battery life for me is at least the same as it was on Nexus S. Definitely no worse, maybe better. Hard to say for certain.
One drawback is that the GNex is certainly less snappy than a Nexus S on 2.3.6. in all respects.
Like JB on Nexus 7. Miffed at Note updates. Anyone with note switched and wished they hadn't?
Is the screen disappointing compared to note?
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I switched last week. Best technology-related decision I've made this decade. The Note was fine, but since I couldn't stand TouchWiz, I was running CM9 (which wasn't quite full-featured, as the pen wasn't fully supported). The GNex feels so much better in the hand -- and pocket.
I hardly notice a difference with screen quality or size by looking at it, though the slight shrink in keyboard size took some getting used to.
Oh, plus I was able to stuff some extra cash in my pocket in the trade, even though the Note and Nexus were the same price when I bought the Note.
I had the Note, but sold it months ago. I love the Nexus and ability to get latest updates. I feel the Note, Nexus and SIII screens are the same for the most part. Believe it or not I do feel my Nexus screen is a bit better and very slightly brighter compared to the SIII, despite GSMArena test result said otherwise.
Screens feel about the same as far as reading goes. Although I do miss my note...... having a phablet is like a privledge. Not a right. I might trade the nexus back for a note.
Yes it was tested on animals, didn't fit.
Thanks for the replies.
Are you guys happy enough with the camera downgrade?
I have a camera for camera stuff..... thus is a device for media consumption
Yes it was tested on animals, didn't fit.
I used to feel the same way about cell phone cameras and REAL cameras. But I have found that taking photos on the note is extremely handy. Hopefully it will be on the nexus as well.
Trying to see what factors influenced people here to get a 4.3" screen over a 5".
Portability is a good reason but how do you reconcile that with decreased readability of a smaller screen.
The trend was to move from iphone size screen over to 5 inchers. 5 inches seems optimum. Anything bigger and it becomes unwieldy. Now it seems we're going in the opposite direction.
So given a choice over the Z1 or compact. Why would you go with the compact ?

i am really, really glad someone took the step to release a 4,3"-phone with descent hardware-specs. I just want to reach all corners of the screen while holding it in one hand. Can't do this with 5" or larger. Also, i don't need 5" for any reason on my mobile. I got a Nexus 7 for watching movies, playing HiRes-Games and all the other stuff, a large screen is good for. So 4,3" on the mobile is perfect for me because it fits into the pocket and i can use it one-handed.

Size.
And as a bonus a better IPS-display.
I moved from a Galaxy S3 which I'd had for 2 years. My main worry about getting the Z1c was the smaller screen. And after having the Z1c for a couple of days I'm getting used to it.
I do find the keyboard letters smaller but. I do love this phone. It's far speedier than the S3 and I find the text shaper.
I'm not missing the 4.8" S3 at all.

Underlined bit is a major reason i've heard people mention for not going beyond 5 inchers.
Time was you could not make a screen that big and be able to use it one handed. Things have changed. many people think the Z1 is very close to the size of the note 3 yet only offers a 5 inch screen.

What about web browsing though ? granted reading on a 5 incher isn't all that great either. but does going smaller make it worse.
Not talking about ppi or anything just wondering whether the reduced screen estate gets in the way. If you don't do much browsing then its moot. But part of owning a smartphone is being able to do just that. To browse on the move.

i rarely use the browser. For most things (Wikipedia, Facebook, Amazon, Imgur, xda, etc.) i use the appropriate app. And reading within those apps doesn't make a difference between 4.3" and 5" for me. So: no, i don't browse a lot (by meaning "browsing" in the classical way using the browser), but gather information using the mobile apps. Which works just perfect for me. Especially as i changed the dpi to 280, so there's a bit more room for content.
If i had a chance to choose from z1 to z1c ill get z1c. Battery and screen size. Ratio of battery to screen size is almost perfect. I hope thwy should keep this ratio.

Size. 5"+ is a mini tablet imo and impractical for one handed operation, and for some reason manufacturers seem to have thought this far that everyone wants a big screen which for me just isn't the case, where as the Z1 Compact is perfect for a "mobile" Phone.

Specs and Size for me.
I've had the HTC One X now for nearly 2 years, and coming close to upgrade time so had been looking around anyway, however, started a new job five months ago and was given an iPhone 5 as my works phone.
Both on the same network, so has been a really good test for me to compare the two OS's back to back. And while the iPhone has loads of really nice features, there are so many things it lacks (and also performs really poorly on, like dealing with anything in a poor signal area), which has made me really prefer Android.
The only one thing that I really like about the iPhone 5 compared to my HTC, is the size... it's made it feel massive, and now I've used both side by side, I really notice how much nicer a smaller phone is to use day to day.
Went to look at all the other 'Mini' phones, and they're all the same spec as my current HTC One X, which considering it's nearly 2 years old, seemed pointless to pay for a 'new' phone, when it's no better than my existing one, only smaller.
Then the Compact was announced, with same high-end specs as all the other flagship phones, and fit the bill perfectly!
I bought a Z1c after a "Hands-On" in a shop and I had the same reasons as many others: Size and Spec
Size:
Some people state that the size of an IPhone 4s is perfect, some other prefer a 5". So it's more a point of view and taste.
I've had many "hands-on" with different devices and for my taste/usage everything above 4.6" would be too much.
If possible I still like to use my thumb for scrolling, etc and with Z1c I can reach almost every corner of the screen.
Specs:
I guess I don't have to go in detail? It's just perfect and is a great successor of my Xperia S.
Size. and HQ Sony Camera
So thats what I thought...but after I saw how bad the cam is, probably will get rid of this piece of crap.

Yeah, that's a very improtant reason. A phone ought to be portable if it isn't then you're compromising for something else.

I browse the web a lot on my mobile when I'm on the go for quick bits of info, and the size difference between the HTC One X, and the iPhone didn't make a great deal of difference, as you still need to zoom in on most non-mobile optimised pages either way.
Although if I know I'm going to be browsing for a long period of time (20+ mins) I'll always jump on a PC as it's much easier.
The reason I went for the compact if the normal was the IPS screen. Much better viewing angles and improved design.
I'm not bothered about screen size at all. But I don't spend all day looking at my phone to be honest. Better in the pocket that a big screen phone also

Hi, is the nexus 5x worth it ? i can get this device from ebay for 316 $ with fedex shiping, so for the price is ok, what do you guys think, should i get it ? or meaby suggest me a better phone at this price range ?

Yes I just got one for my wife and I've messed with it a little. My only complaints are that it's only got 2gb RAM and she had some issues with dropped calls.

Its a great device, no problem with dropped calls id imagine thats network issues.
Camera is great, screen is lovely and performance is good for me (general phone use no gaming). Battery life is good too.
Only thing id like is stereo speakers, more RAM would be nice but honestly ive not really noticed any issues.
Your budget might be a consideration in your decision. As for me performance wise I don't notice a big difference between the Nexus 5 and the 5x. I do like the finger print scanner, camera is a big improvement and battery life improved. For me the Nexus 5x is everything the 5 was and more. Google supports the Nexus for 3 years and it the first to get updates. One thing that is important to me is the ability to use the Nexus with any cell service, it also has the new T-mobile band 12.
Good luck with your decision.
$316 is a ridiculous price for this phone. You won't be disappointed. If you have access to Project Fi in your area you can save that much in a year. Never an issue with calls or ram usage by me. I use the phone a lot but I'm not a power user so can't attest to ram stuff very much. Couple of really good roms out there and kernels too if you're so inclined.

yeah price is great, i will get it, but i will need to pay the Fedex import duties, since the google does not ship to my country, and idk how much that will go
16gb or 32gb? You can get brand new ones on eBay for $280/330. I picked up my wife's Google refurbished 32gb on Swappa for 290. Not sure if either of these would ship to your country but you should be able to find one under $316.

Feels great in hand brother, design is perfectly fine, strong, tight...if yer going naked I'm sure it's even more comfortable than the 6p.

To me from the software side it feels exactly like my Nexus 5. I have disabled encryption and the phone feels as responsive and snappy as my Nexus 5. Opening different apps is sometimes faster on the 5 and sometimes faster on the 5X. It feels thinner in the hand but ever so slightly wider to use. Fits in my pocket just fine and doesn't feel like a phablet. I would still prefer a phone the size of the Nexus 5 but we don't have a choice really unless we buy a Samsung Galaxy S phone or a smaller Sony phone. The problem with a Sony compact phone for me though is it wouldn't have wifi calling on t-mobile which I need. That limits my choice of higher end phone to basically Samsung or the Nexus 5X (which is more midrange now) I bought the 16GB version on black Friday for $299 and haven't regretted it at all. I have about 10 games installed and have roughly half my space left.

I think this falls into the category of the old saying " ask ten people you will get ten different answers" but that said I will do my best to honestly answer your questions.
I've got large hands and have used my 5x with and without a case and decided not to use a case. I did put a leather textured skin which in my opinion added grip, with the skin I've never dropped the 5x. I did use it for a short time without a case or skin and dropped it a couple times, fortunately on carpet. The skin solved a dilemma, I didn't want to drop and damage my 5x, the skin provided enough grip I was comfortable I wouldn't drop it.
As for comfort in my hands, I find it very comfortable. I've used it to read lots of e-books, always reading one handed. I read a ton of books with my old Nexus 5 and it's almost exactly the same size with a case as my Nexus 5x is without, hits the sweet spot for me regarding size and comfort.
As for the design I think google pretty much nailed it but it's subjective as no device is going to be perfect for everyone, we all come in different shapes and sizes having different needs or expectations. I really like the addition of the finger print scanner but is it in the exactly perfect spot for me? Nope, I find myself putting my finger on the camera most of the time. Some feel a better location is on the front near the bottom but with my big paws I would need to use two hands instead of one handed operation in its current location. As for the size most flagship devices are larger and I don't want or need a larger device. The deciding factor for me between the Nexus 5x or 6P was strictly based on size. I won't deny it would be nice if the Nexus 5x had a more premium look and feel but its certainly not a deal breaker for me. Since most people keep their phones in a case, honestly I'm surprised how much importance is being placed on it.
Good luck with your decision, if you decide on the Nexus 5x I hope it meets or exceeds your expectations.
My "net" upgrade cost from the good old, reliable & solid N5 with 16GB purchased from Google Store as it launch was under $200 including extra USB-C accessories, not bad (sold the almost like new, near mint condition N5 package on eBay) - got the new N5X with 32GB storage via a reseller for $320 shipped. With a solid, hybrid bumper case - it feel nice & good in my big hand, same MM 6.0.1 as the N5, both running PureNexus - not looking for a speed boost, just reliability that I can count on, extra storage of MP3's & MP4's and oh, yes - camera/flash combo - and longer battery life (plus, if necessary - use the fast charger for a quick boost on days with heavy use) Bigger screen is beautiful, although I do "like" Mrs. L's Nexus 6 - she described it as a mini TV screen with great sounding stereo speakers, almost to a point of being too loud (and it's set only midway) - she carried it in her purse or tote to/from work, so not worried about how it "sticking" out (as I would hate to carry the N6 on a belt pouch or clip, whether vertical or horizontal)
N5X is about as big as I would comfortable wear/carry on my belt all day long - and the 5.2" screen is more than very good for maps/navigation. I look forward to using this for 2 to 3 years, if not longer & pamper it like the N5, got the glass protector over the touch screen.
On T-Mo USA's network, I have yet to miss important calls - and, freedom to flash Roms and not having to live with bloatware, etc. - a happy camper.
One minor adjustment, when Mrs. L and I are taking longer driving trips together, her N6 become the default in-dash entertainment unit with bluetooth enabled, woohoo !

well, thanks for your time, today i had nexus 5x in hand, for couple of minutes and it feels ok, i come from Htc one m7 and before i thought to upgrade to HTC M8, but nexus 5x is still there , btw the m7 feels way more bette, so my delay is still here : M8 or Nexus 5x :
I came from a i9300 S3, briefly had a Nexus 4 in between, but I am happy with my 5X purchase.
I have my 5x completely vanilla as one of my reasons to get it was not having to mess with the software to make it behave properly and I can tel you it's completely worth it.
Camera is fast and accurate, call quality is great and the feel in hand is wonderful. And the fingerprint sensor works as a charm, way better than my wife's iPhone 6.
Here in Spain it cost me 400€, with its load of taxes and I still think it's worth it. 316$ is a great price.
