[Q] To buy or not to buy? - HTC One X

Hi all
First time poster but long time reader. I am planning to buy the One X next week but keep changing my mind based on what I read here and on other forums.
I know that forums will typically be skewed towards the negative aspects as people will post here in the hoope that someone can help them. I've also seen a few posts by people who love the phone and are not having any issues at all.
My question to you guys is this : Do I bite the bullet and buy the One-X now or do I wait a couple of weeks to see if a new software release solves or the issues or to see if HTC tweak any hardware issues in a new batch of phones?
This is a real dilemma for me. I'm out of contract on my Desire so in theory I could buy the One-X at any time. I dont want to rush into a rash decision but at the same time I dont want to delay my purchase if there is a high chance my handset will behave perfectly.

Buy it. Its the best android phone to date.

Or maybe you could wait a little more longer until HTC release a fix for all the issues that One X is facing, or atleast their announcement for the screen flicker issue until you decide.

It's simple BUY BUY BUY
Sent from the Beast that is the HTC One X in white......

I'd suggest waiting a bit till May 3 Even if u decide to buy One X afterall, by then the chances of buying a "polished" handset will get higher.

Flickering: 10% chances to get it?
Flex/ripples: 30%?
I always had good luck with mobile phones so I think I will try to buy it end of next week

Buy the HTC ONE X or wait?

Hello everyone, i still didnt buy the X, waited to see the reviews after launch so far so bad.
Do you think its better to wait SGIII or just buy the phone ? Plz details.
Its better if you own the phone to answer the question.

Up to you. Specs or OS? Sense vs TouchWiz.
Sure the SGS3 may beat the HOX on specs we all know that! But it comes down to user experience and Sense beats TW. Unless TouchWiz 5 will be a complete revamp we don't know!
You can wait but you'll be waiting forever there's always something better around the corner. Choose what's important for you.
Wait!.... err I mean BUY IT!
Really?
Every new phone will have issues, will always be like that, the SG3 will also have issues.
Just buy the One-X or wait for ever on your "perfect" phone

I agree with this...you can sit and wait for the "best" phone, or just jump in and get it done. Who's to say the SGS won't have issues?? That is not to say "Buy the OneX", or "Buy the SGSIII"...it just means, you can sit and debate what will be best until you die and never have a new phone.
For my 2c, if you are asking this question, it means you really just want someone to justify what you already want, so just go out and buy it. I did and I am really happy with it. Sure, there are one or two niggling things, but all phones will have those...seriously, this thing is freaking amazing. If you want it, just do it...if you want the SGS, hang out for a while. Simple.
Getting my OneX after weekend. If in couple of months I will prefer S3 then I will change. if not i will continue with pretty awesome OneX
If you would have aproved specs for S3, then I would say choose w/e you like best.
But since there are only rumors around S3, then it can take forever to get released, by time its released theres soemthing else to come! Its same as w8ing to be 80years old to finally buy a house.
Want upgrade? Found phone you like? GO FOR IT
The One X just happened to be released first after my contract was up - so I got one - if the SGS3 was available earlier I may have got that.
One X is superb and I will not be regretting this decision so unless you just prefer Samsung for some reason get the One X and enjoy it NOW

Do you normally trust the advice of strangers when making a significant purchase? There's tons of information about the various issues and you need to read through them to figure out whether what bothers others would bother you.
A couple of points:
1) Every new device and major s/w release in the past six months has had issues. That includes the GN, Asus Prime, Xperia S and ICS update for the SGS2. Many of the early problems were resolved with updates. There's no reason to think the same wouldn't apply to the HOX. It's a little early to say the sky is falling although many have.
2) Some of the problems discussed are random. Either defects with an individual phone or s/w conflicts based on how an individual user has their phone configured. If your h/w is defective you can swap the phone. If your configuration is causing issues you can drop or replace certain apps.
3) There seem to be some common problems related to graphics. It could be h/w limited to certain devices or s/w. The last update seems to have eliminated the graphics issues for some users. Again, if your phone is affected just swap it.
4) The color temperature of the display can vary. I've seen two and one was definitely warmer than the other. If you buy the phone somewhere where you can view the display before finalizing your purchase this wouldn't be an issue. If you can't, buy it online from someone who is liberal about exchanges.
5) Battery life is an issue. It's too early to tell how big an issue. I'm definitely getting less use from the phone using it exactly the way I used my SGS2. With a non-replaceable battery this means charging it during the day to make it all the way through. I'm hoping it gets better over time.
I bought my phone last week from the UK after reading all the horror stories. Other than questionable battery life I'm not experiencing any of the problems discussed using the same 75 apps I had running on my SGS2. I think the phone's great but you have to draw your own conclusions after doing more personal research.

BNew HOXes - build quality

Hi,
I am getting ready to buy a HOX as the S3 is not to my liking.
As we all know some of the first HOXes had build quality issues like yellowish screen spots, cracking of the outer shell and screen, and flickering.
I am wondering if HTC has successfully adressed those issues yet. Could new owners please report their build quality (please no early adopters anymore).
Please report any issues (also please report if you don't have any) and your device color (as it seems to indicate country of production).
Surely more ppl than just myself are curious to know if HTC has addressed the issues.
Thanks for your kindness in sharing your experiences.
All the best.

there are more fine HOX's then defects, people with problems are more vocal then those without, if you worried don't buy either and get a different phone.
my first had a dead pixel i got 2 days after release i got a replacement on the 3rd day and it is perfect.

thanks. I've asked because I've looked at one in a local store. It cracked and had a noticable annoying yellow spot on the screen. Also HTC had promised to address the issues. I'm just wondering how production of the devices improved...
got my HOX 11 days after the uk release and i have had no issues whatsoever. The build quality is htc standard aswell, plastic phone but damn good quality sturdy plastic lol. none of the samsung rubbish
i love my one x and nth is wrong with it its just the battery. what pisses me off is that the S3 has the same dimension a bit different and same wight just 3g difference and they have a 2100 mAh battery, what would have happened if HTC did that God !!!! im sorry im just really pissed just saw this
please make sure other than that i love the phone it works great i have nth to say more than its 99% great just battery life and if i have to recomend someone to get a phone it is the HOX for lots of reasons !!!
my answer for u is go ahead and buy the HOX its a great phone !!!
chances of a fauly one?
The build quality issues are the only thing stopping me getting one too. They are about $100 cheaper to buy on ebay than in a store (buying outright) but would be a real pain to have to ship back and forth if it was faulty. What do you think the chances would be of getting a fauly one? or worth the extra money to be able to return it the same day ?

I've seen 3 different one x and they all had issues and my latest is from a newer batch and it have flickering, screen issues and a low lit back button. Most people that are happy with their handsets either are the kind that dont look for flaws or fanboys, as youve started this thread i guess youre not that kind. I think all phones have flickering in some degree but most people dont see it. The amount of faulty hoxes is way too frequent. You should listen to those who put their phones under a microscope if you want an objective opinion.

I dont know why people keep say things like "why can company A do this but company B can't?" It makes no sense at all. Just because Motorola can make an awesome battery or S3 has a bigger battery so HTC HAS TO be able to do the same thing. Well, apparently they cant. Their technology doesnt allow them to do that, and it's ok. No need to get worked up about it. If their stuff doesn't live up to your expectations then feel free to not buy them. It's YOUR money, YOUR phone, YOUR decision.

SO now the dozens of people who have faulty handsets on XDA (look at the poll) represent the market?
I got mine on release day here on the UK (5th April I think) - I've not had any issues with mine, no flickering, no spots, no creaking etc.
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk 2
I also got mine early, on friday before the offcial release date in germany.
My HOX is perfectly. No screen flickering, no yellow ****, screen cracking etc.
Got my UK HT23 One X on release day from Phones4U and have the flickering screen issue. I wonder if the HT24 versions have the issues people are having? Can anyone confirm this?
Mine is perfect as well

My One X is perfect(there is a chance the screen flickers and i have umpteen dead pixels but i need to borrow a microscope to make sure.) I have no creaks, rattling noises,no gaps between body and screen.I`d give it a 10/10 but downgrade it to 9/10 because i can`t get used to the volume controls on the right hand side.
I bought mine a week after release.
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
Mine is perfect. I purchased it in the first week of release in Australia. no issues with screen, casing etc. Much better than my galaxy s ii and galaxy nexus. Waiting for pure asop build though with no bugs.

Mine is perfect, I bought it on the day of release in the UK over a month ago and I haven't had a single issue.

Mine is perfect too. Mine is an SH23 model, and if you do some research you'll find very contradicting evidence of HT (Taiwanese) or SH (Chinese) models being worse. All I can say is mine has no physical defects.

true respect ur idea again not my point coz i said the phone is great and i would recommend it as is!!!! just saying some love my friend hehe
Thanks for the replies so far. It seems as if there are mainly first adopters, here as most ppl who have replied so far have bought their phone in the first week of release. That is to be expected, in this forum, I guess. But...
Has anyone bought one recently? like, say, in May?

yes my latest is ht24 and got it wedneysday and it is ****. it has this, really really noticeable, http://youtu.be/Dl1X37IyzdA
you should read the threads related to all the issues, not the happy-happy-threads cause they are subjective. its more frequent than some want you to believe. and I REALLY want to like this phone as everything besides build issues is great.

I got two HT243 phones one after the other, the first on the 17th of April, had a yellow band on the top left of the screen, a small gap on the left with the associated creacks and flex and the deal killer, Wi-Fi connectivity issues.
After 4 days, gave up and had it exchanged - the next was and still is perfect. Ten days after I got it, I unlocked it and am now experimenting with custom Roms.
This is my 5th HTC handset in as many years, all lived and worked in perfect state untill they got sold. I am confident my HOX will live up to the expectations.
The only drawback I really find is the battery, indeed, as this is a device that craves to be used, it's unexplainable, but I feel I cannot let it down. Bear in mind it's my fourth week with it already. Htc should have given us the option for a replaceable power pack.
So I suggest you get your unit from a retail store, so that you can examine the device beforehand, at least for the physical defects described on this forum.
.... Or make sure you have a later model HT245... HT25...

[Q] Dilemma over HOX issues

Dear members,
I would like to know the truth behind the issues faced by the HTC one X, which I read in many websites across the internet(and few here).I'm expecting a truthful reply from current users.
I was decided to get one for me untill last week, but the issues what I read for one X confused me.The issues that I came across was;
over heating(guess its obvious for smart phones)
Wi-fi issues(death grip issue)
screen/display flickering,
yellow spots on display,
Frequent black screens,
Restart troubles,
Music player issues(when music player stops when gallery is used)
Taiwan made phone's facing issues over Chineese made ones.
I would really appreciate if someone could give me their honest review of Htc One X and
help me decide whether to buy it or not.
Kindly address these issues ASAP, as I had already made up my mind to go for HOX, so that I can buy one with relaxed mind...
I cant think of any other smartphones as of now.
Looking forward to your responses and future phone
debates on this forum.
Thanks in advance

My first HOX was returned because of the screen flicking issue. Replacement is totally perfect and not had any issues with it at all. The phone gets hot after about 10 mins of continuous use but that is expected.
On the other hand my Dad just received he's One X and that has the Screen Flex issue on the left hand side. I didn't mention it to him as to be honest he prob wont notice but it just goes to show that recent batches still have this issue.
Overall Im really pleased with the phone and if you are unlucky enough to receive a faulty one then you usually have 28 days from the day you receive it to get a replacement sent. After that it's a trip to the HTC Repair center.
The only problems I have had are overheating (all the time, but I don't mind as the phone is powerful and I expect it to get warm) and the yellow marks on the screen, but they went away after a day and I haven't seen them at all (not even the tiniest bit)..

Yeah my first HOX was dysfunctional too (camera issues, a big 'stripe' when opening the camera app), so I went back to the shop to switch my phone for a new one. So far so good, no problems with my 2nd HOX.
I'm in your same situation I want to buy the one x but all this issues scare me, I think I'm gonna wait for at least two months and then get it, hoping to get a new batch, i cannot exchange it since I would be importing from amazon

yes but the above link doesnot show how to find the wifi problem before buying it. the hardware issue. any way to detect that. also what if the phone has a default battery. i cant ask the retailer to lend me the phone for a week to test. this doesnt happen in my country man. i am also afraid to to buy the HOX. today i held both HOX and S3 in my hand. and HOX looked so damn fuking good. but still very afraid to buy one.

you do not need to take the phone away to test it. you can test it there by switching it on and playing with it for a few minutes and check for any screen issues ie(flickering) or regarding the wifi you should not have any problems. is this job you buying it from are they are a well known shop were you can trust them to take it back if anything gets wrong with it?
just try and connect to a wifi connection in the store and ask the retailer if it is ok to see if that is working..
actually even better tell the retailer your fears about the One X and ask him if there has been any issues with it and he would be probably the best person to answer all your questions..
if you are still worrying about wifi though there are a few threads here in the general section which you can read upon..but i will tell you this i never had any issues with regarding wifi

Check out my thread here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1721727
My advice is that if you really prefer the One X over the S3 (which I guess would be your other choice) wait a month or so for these issues to be addressed. HTC is getting a lot of bad press because of these issues and sooner or later the company has to deal with them.
I did a Google search today for S3 build quality defects and surprisingly there were just one off cases..nothing as major as the WiFi death grip issues, the screen flex issue, the overheating or the yellow spot issue! Thats way too many defects for any device. If you are going to be investing a good 36k wait back and let it pass.

As you said, I think its better to wait for 1 more month, till HTC sort out these glitches.
I've not tried S3 on hand till now, so I dont know how it is....my default option was HTC one X and I was eagerly waiting for its launch. But these issues really let me down...its like taking a huge risk as of now..so lemme wait and get it...sometimes anticipation is sweet when you are sure of outcome(Hope HTC rectify the issues)

Hey buddy,
here in India the story is entirely different.the retailer will have a display piece in their showroom, and the customer is allowed to use that alone for verification.
And once the customer buys the new one, and if he finds issues out if the box, the retailer wont take any responsiblities.
They will ask us to go to HTC service center, which will be miles away. The retailers really sucks in this matter here, and for the customer, its like trial and error.....

Try the S3 in the meanwhile..spend some time with it. S3 put me off primarily because of the looks.. Other things apart, One X is a more premium looking phone and for me this is a very important factor. Keep visiting your nearest retailer and see if the SH25 or HT25 series has arrived. This batch seems to be the best of the lot .. Holding back a month or so will really pay off in the end.

I have One X and I'm really happy with this beast ! No Problem at all
Very Fast, Huge Screen with unbelievable quality (Tegra 3 games are soo perfect), before i Had GS2 Note iPhone4 GS1, Evo3D etc... but this phone is simply amazing...
I had Overheat with some games on GS2 too... so i don't think this is an hardware issue (my opinion), Music quality is brilliant, camera is very very fast and many opportunities (HDR, Panorama, Slow motion record etc).
The only thing that i would say this phone is poor, is battery, it's not too bad, not too good ... In future we will have customs Kernels so i don't mind...
Hope I helped you

Try the S3 in the meanwhile..spend some time with it. S3 put me off primarily because of the looks.. Other things apart, One X is a more premium looking phone and for me this is a very important factor. Keep visiting your nearest retailer and see if the SH25 or HT25 series has arrived. This batch seems to be the best of the lot .. Holding back a month or so will really pay off in the end.

I've been waiting for 3 weeks now, impatiance is growing inside me, but i guess its wise to wait n watch for another 1 month..:-(
Do you any info, wheather HTC have responded officially regarding these glitches...will they cover all issues through the updates alone or any fresh batches of HOX can be expected?
Also, is it possible to know the batch name/code, from the box itself(without opening the box), if yesm kindly let me know how...

I am sure HTC is looking into these issues very seriously. They are getting a lot of bad press. When I went to the service center yesterday, I met 4 people who had different problems related to WiFi, over heating, display etc.
There is a way to identify the batch. There is a white label on the box that states the device's IMEI number and serial number (S/N). Look out for the serial number.. if it starts with a "SH25" or "HT25"..you should be good to go!

That info abt S/N was really helpful.
I talked with a retailer over here, and they informed me they are having SH25 black model in stock currently.I guess the SH25 is Chineese model...
lemme go there, once again have the demo piece in my model, gotta check all the things acco to the thread which showed "how to check HOX while buying"...
BTW what du think about SH25...??
I think the recent batches of the One X have relatively lesser to no issues. The death grip will be resolved in the future batches and so the ones now in the Market will most probably have it.
Other than that, the heat is obvious, but you can't play games while charging as the battery gets over heated. Also the screen flickering issues and all other issues have been resolved in the new test build 2.05 and that will be coming to us with some more improvements as well pretty soon. So most of the issues are resolved as well... I think you can go for it... You will not regret it.....
One issue is that you will face is the battery backup is not as good as the S3 but you can get through easily one day with moderate use.
Moderate Use: 3G data on full time, Auto Sync ON, FB whatsapp chatting youtube and so on for 1 hour(3G usage), calls for 1 hour, music for 2 hours.
I feel this is the best device on the market despite what the S3 lovers say... She is a beauty....
Update: I have not checked for the deathgrip issue as 90 percent of the time my phone is on 3G and I have little screen brightness adjustment bug visible when the brightness is really low.. But otherwise no issues what so ever.... I am having the HT24 model and no issues other than the deathgrip.

SH25 should be good... i think you can go ahead and buy it.. just dont root it and use it as much as possible for a good 7 days... just in case you face any issues declare the phone DOA by going to your nearest HTC service center within 7-14 days of purchase (earlier the better).. then you can get a replacement from the store that you brought the phone from.. alternatively just ask for a credit note from the store and wait out a month for the storm to pass
Although its very unlikely that you will face any issues with the SH25 model..Good luck!

[Q] Once bitten twice shy - should I get the S3?

HTC One X owner from India..big fan of HTC products..until now.
After several weeks of careful deliberation I decided to buy the infamous HTC One X, brushing aside the wide variety of build defects being reported all over the internet.
The first time around I discovered the damned WiFi issue and immediately got a DOA certificate from HTC. Got my replacement HOX this Saturday, a brand new piece, and foolishly enough I didn't check the phone at the store. I also had the option of buying an S3 but decided to settle with a HOX (because of my loyalty to HTC)
Later I realized that the display has a big yellow spot on the top and a glaring black spot (both clearly visible on a white background) right in the center of the screen. Rushed back to the store and got another DOA certificate.
My dilemma is - should I trust HTC the third time around? I really want to, despite the nightmare I have faced, but is it worth it? Should I just get the freaking S3?
You should stick with HOX in my opinion you were just extremely unlucky on the first two, if you're used to HTC phones you are going to miss a lot of features and sense if you go for the S3.

Lol had the same dilemma after my first HOX had the screen flex issue.
But samsung service sucks here so i decided to give HOX another go, Fortunately for me the replacement seems perfect with only the rattle sound being an issue/, But i heard its quite normal in all smartphones so i am happy now
get another HOX you wont regret it.
It's a no brainer.. the S3 sucks....
hmmm
i just love sense too much... i'd try again.
i'm an htc-addict.
but: you have to make this choice, we can't help you. why don't you try a S3 in store and see if you like it?
go into the store and get a third one..and before you do read this thread so you know what to look out for so you get the perfect one

Thanks guys..well the unanimous opinion here seems to be in favor of the HoX. I am quite keen to give HTC one more shot so I've decided to wait till a new batch comes in (the one that gave me trouble was the SH24LW). I have also written to HTC Asia customer grievances. Let's see what they have to say about it.
The funny thing is when I went to the service center today I met 4 people there with issues ranging from WiFi to overheating and display problems. I spoke to these folks and they were all intermediate to advanced users. What I really feel enraged about is the fact that an average or novice user who buys this device is never going to notice all these issue and end up owning a substandard product that's going to give him problem in the longer run.
Its not everyday you buy such an expensive device and the least you would expect is to get some promise of quality from a global giant like HTC.

You see the problem here is that you have to buy the device first before you can break the seal and have a look inside.. and once you do that you inadvertently end up buying the device.. which means if theres a defect you go to the service center, which is about 10 miles from the store, and get a DOA certificate.. then come back all the way round and replace the phone. My cost of ownership of this phone has already surpassed the original price by 50$. Not to mention the 2 days of productivity lost at work!

I did try the S3 the first time I went to buy the HoX and I didnt like it one bit. It crossed my mind when I went back to the store to get my first replacement and I had a look at the S3 for a good 20 minutes before walking out with another HoX. Now I have another chance so I just wanted everyone's opinion here.
Thanks!

do you not have the seven day return policy? so say if you are not happy with the handset you got that 7 day window to return it?
that is what we have over here in the UK and makes life a lot easier specially for those who can not make their mind up.
anyways you can still use the guide and ask these questions at the store were you purchase the phone and that way you can have a peace of mind about it if the employees are helpful that is and answer your questions

Unfortunately, we enjoy no such privilege here. The store just retails the product and if you face a problem you have to approach the manufacturer directly.
As for asking questions at the store - here's an interesting story for you. When I informed the salesman about the overheating problem he asked me to use headphones instead
Then I showed him the display issue and he asked me not to open apps with a white background. At the HTC service center I overheard the engineer tell a customer that he cant use headphones other than the ones bundled with the phone otherwise the phone's warranty will be voided. I gave him such a look that he mellowed down and gave up on that logic.

no probs...hope you go for the one x mate as this phone is a beauty...once you get a perfect one which after a few months now the QC should be better you will just be amazed by the screen
This is India dude..I wouldn't be surprised if the engineers at the service center are unaware of even the screen resolution of one x..happened with me at Samsung's service center..guy told me that s2 n Note have exactly the same resolution..so don't rely on their judgement..just check that the phone is from the latest lot ie either HT25 or 26 or SH series..I would recommend that u go with HT series which stands for manufactured in Taiwan..mine is a real early Taiwan build of March and its flawless in every department..

Both phones were SH24. Didn't find a single SH25/26 here (Bombay) let along a HT.
Me too using ht version and I am from India . Just go for one more hox . You will get a good one. My prayers for you.
Gs3 sucks , I had given a try. Even if you buy s3 you will sell it . Even faulty hox is better than the proper s3.
You will get good one.

My first android phone I have been lucky the only thing I can find wrong with mine is that it makes a hissing noise when recording in 1080p I just turn off stereo and records fine no hiss. If I was in your shoes 2 faulty devices I would diff go for the sgs3 that many f ups is unexceptable

This is a One x forum, of course the unanimous opinion is going to be in favor of the One X. I always tell people who ask which one they should pick that they should base their choice on what they prefer in their phone. Both are the best on the market right now but depends if you like slcd screens or AMOLED technology, if you need a lot of storage, if you're attracted to the beautiful body of the phone, sense or touchwiz, battery life ect... You search what you want in your phone and pick which one to go with.

I do agree on this, lots of users had/ have issues with the one x, I happen to be one of the lucky people without any issues whatsoever and its been great. But again both phones are great so just make sure you know what you're looking for in a phone OP.
