I've heard some folks talk about Samsung warranty service. What are the stipulations of doing it through them vs a Sprint corporate store? Also, do you get a new phone through Samsung, or do they send you a refurb?
I am in a process of doing the same thing but I called sprint and they said it's still under warranty from Samsung so they will check it out. This guy did it check

I sent my phone into samsung after sprint told me they couldn't do anything because it was rooted (morons). Anywho, they shoot you a ups label, print it, ship it out with 3 sides having the ticket number on it. They give you a link in an email so you can track the progress through repair, haven't gotten my phone back yet, but from what the ticket updates say, it seems like they are just repairing my phone i sent in. If that changes, i'll let you know.
what was wrong with your phone?
Ask for a white one, most likely it will be brand new

You will more than likely get a refurbished unit.

Don't listen to this kid. They do know when your insurance was added, and they do care. He is suggesting you commit insurance fraud.
If the Sprint rep told you to jump off a bridge would you do that?

Company policy is to work on rooted devices unless it is a software issue and you are on a custom rom then you need to go back to a stock rom. TEP and asurion are NOT real insurance and insurance laws don't apply to them, it would be just plain fraud, which would be hard to prove since fraud means you did something with the intention to get something more for free by intentionally doing something to get it, ie smashing your phone or microwaving it to get an upgraded device and not a replacement for a malfunctioning/broken device. I work in property insurance and even certain things that are blatantly done to be able to up the value of the claim in the policy holders favor isn't considered fraud. Either way Asurion and TEP are not insurance, insurance law doesn't apply to them which is why they are called device/equipment protection and not device/equipment insurance. In my state (FL) they aren't allowed to use the word insurance in their advertisement or paperwork because the law says they aren't an insurance company are not governed in the same way as insurance companies and never will be because they are a monopoly and there is no competition in prices you have the choice of asurion or nothing and it is contracted through the carrier and not chosen by the customer with a choice to shop for a competitive premium/deductible

Idaho is Similar in calling it the protection plan. But when all is said and done pay for the protection plan is mainly a guarantee that one way or another that we will have a solution for you. Yeah you can go through Samsung but you can run the risk of getting your "Broken" phone back after waiting for 6-8 weeks, with no solution. Usually paying the 35 and doing an store replacement will be easier on the pocket book as well as alot faster 2-5 days at the most. This will also allow you to add the TEP if you want.

The worst part of asurion is they have no QC on what type of refurbs they send out, most of the time you get some kind of crap phone with more problems and aesthetic damage than the one you're having replaced. This is one reason why I don't have asurion or TEP. The other being that all my electronics are covered under my homeowners policy and any portable electronics (cell phones, laptops, PSP, gameboy, mp3 players etc) are covered in and out of the house from loss, theft or damage. I pay nothing extra on my premium and my deductible is $50 per device. If anything happens to my device (no matter what or what kind of device) instead of paying asurion or sprint my money up front, I file a claim with my insurance company, and 3 days later I get a check for the full MSRP of the device less $50. So if my phone is $600 off contract I would get a check for $550 which I can do whatever I want with. I could add my $50 to it and buy a brand new phone or I could cash the check buy a used device and pocket the difference. What makes it even nicer is my insurance payment are direct deposited to my bank account so i don't have to wait for a check to clear, and I get my funds in 12-72 hours depending on the time/day I filed my claim.

Not for both of mine that have been replaced. My tech guy was running CM9 on his personal Nexus S 4g, and I told him mine were rooted and were running a ROM when the problem occurred. The first bricked one I was able to get access to the internal sd card and format it and put stock recovery back on it and the second one had the blue led of death so it didn't matter what it was running.

Yes, you can just flash it to metroPCS, there are tons of instructions out there. HOWEVER, I noticed you're in NYC. Just keep in mind the Metro PCS network in NYC and New england is quite new and uses the 1700mHz AWS band, which the evo does not support.

No service in any way, shape or form.
In my experience insurance doesn't report the esn to sprint if you only talk to the insurance folks directly. The only way to get it deactivated or marked as lost or stolen is to actually tell sprint. Whether it's asking them for the phone number of asurion and telling them the phone was lost or telling them in the store.

Also please do not forget that Insurance Fraud is bad. It causes higher deductibles for those that make claims, even those that are not making fraudulent claims.
If you have the device, water damaged or not, you are supposed to send it to Asurion. Asurion is not my friend, however I am a customer of theirs. I think that you should send the phone to them.
I do wonder why it was 12 minutes in the water and not 11 or 13. 11 minutes in the water sounds much more believable for an insurance claim than 12.
I do not like people to commit insurance fraud, however my employment is based on the basis of deterring insurance.

While I think he came off as kind of douche-y when he questioned the minutes the phone was dunked in water, I think he's quite right about everything else. It IS insurance fraud, and it WILL raise our deductible. Just a year ago it would cost $50 to replace a phone with asurion, now it costs double that.

I meant to hit the quote button but I hit the thanks button by mistake. Anyway, your example is pretty stupid. The point is he reported his phone lost or stolen when in fact it wasn't. I am sure that he new that if he reported it as damaged then he would have to return the damaged phone thats why he reported it as lost or stolen. If you report your car stolen but in reality you have it hidden somewhere in a friends garage then file an insurance claim isn't that fraud? If you drive your car into a brick wall and the insurance company totals your car out do you get to keep the totalled car to repair then sell it to someone else? Of course not, it becomes the property of the insurance company.

I never said anything about being perfect, I also am not judging anyone or what they do. I could care less what anyone decides to do, that's their business but still, it is what it is and that's a fact. Also, what do you mean by as much as we pay for these phones? Do you remember what cell phones cost 5, 10 or 15 years ago and you gonna mention about the price of phones now? The price of these phones now are way more than reasonable for what we get even though its gonna be outdated in six months, thats just the nature of the industry. If you buy a new car today, in 6 months it aint gonna be worth **** either compared to what you paid for it so whats your point? If something happens to your car are you gonna commit fraud to get as much as you can out of the insurance company because you paid an arm and a leg for your car? Hell, what if your boss tells you one day that "as much as we pay you, you can blow me", is that ok? Like I said it is what it is and you cant dispute that. What ever you decide to do is your business and what ever the OP decides to do is his business, I was just pointing out the obvious facts without casting judgement.

Asurion does not pay for our phones every body here that pays 7$
A month for 24 months. Is 168$ plus 100 dollar deductible they are effectively getting us to pay 268 dollars for us to get a refurbished replacement phone.... now granted my math is based on us having a 2 yr contract and that you only make a claim once a yr... sounds like they're winning to me.....
Just my theory on this as much as **** cost in this world of ours every now and then you've got to stick it to the man

Insurance fraud is illegal on any level. $5 or $5 million dollars. By keeping the phone you are contributing to possible future increases of insurance rates or deductibles.
What I think is funny is that you openly admit to breaking the law on a public forum. Then, you continue to justify yourself. The law is the law.
Assurion is a business and their drive is to profit. If you do not want to support them then you have other options such as Best Buy Insurance or no insurance.
By returning the phone you are giving Assurion a possible chance to refurbish that phone and the ability to keep insurance rates and deductibles down.

Of course they report it to Sprint, if they didn't they would be taking losses left and right.
I dropped my phone and destroyed the screen, still worked but the screen was shattered and cracked real bad. First phone I ever broke from my own negligence.
I called and requested a new phone and was sent a refurb. After making it clear I was not accepting a refurb and wanted a new one it was sent to me.
I am glad I did since I am now seeing threads on problems with the refurbs. I have had nothing but trouble with them so far; between a droid 2 global and an env touch I received close to two dozen bad phones that were refurbished.
Is there another insurance company that is more willing to take care of their customers? An insurance company that cares about its customers; I know. But I am looking for other options or companies.
I always keep the insurance/extended warranty on all of my phones but all that is ever sent is a phone what was broken and sent back already. I think its a rip off to have a deductible and monthly payment unless there is a new phone to replace the phone I purchased new.
Any input or thoughts? Suggestions on other insurance plans?
Honestly, there is nothing wrong with refurbs. I had a hardware revision .10 Gnex originally, and I messed it up and wouldn't boot. I got Verizon to send me a new one at no cost to me and it's hardware revision .09 but it is identical to my original phone. No need to stigmatize refurbished phones... Half of the refurbs have never even been touched by another owner.
If you get into a car accident you pay the deductible and get your car repaired. Not a brand new car. So, you dropped your USED phone and you think you should get a brand new one from the insurance company? pfft.... If that were the case every asshole would be dropping their phones at the 8 month mark to scam a brand new one. I'm rooting for the insurance company on this one.
good day.
Insurance =brand new phone and u pay the deductible.
Warranty =refurbished phone for free
So did u go through insurance or the warranty as Verizon will not honor user error, ie breaking the screen

Insurance such as Asurion is typically a refurb replacement and is not obligated to send a new phone as a replacement. For that matter, it doesn't even necessarily have to be the same model or manufacturer that they replace it with.

The first time, ask for a new phone, not a refurb.
You're complaining they don't take good care of you when they sent you two phones when they were only obligated to send you one?
Why didn't u just do a screen replacement. =p

Second paragraph first sentence. Haters gonna hate.
Was curious about different options on insurance (not me) and peoples experiences with refub gnexes. I do not know who does the refurb but I personally went through plenty of them with laundry lists of issues.
Maybe samsung does a good job with QC while motorola does not. Broken camera on a the first refurb Droid 2 Global is a perfect example.
So last Friday I bought my SGSIII at Radio Shack. Dude asked me if I want their insurance. I tell him "No I already have insurance through Sprint" last night I get home and my phone falls out of the car. Screen cracks in the upper right corner. I call Sprint to file a claim and they tell me that Friday July 27th the insurance was removed from the account. LOL WTF? Radio Shack guy deleted my insurance. Now I have to go in circles with Sprint and Assuron to see if they will add the insurance back on and take my claim. But I'm thinking that I should do into Radio Shack and demand a brand new phone free of charge. Who agrees?
Im guessing your from the states and Im from the uk. But if i had this problem then i wiuld honestly go to Radio shack and ask if you coukd still have the insurence. As it is still withing a 14 day prerod. And then if they agree and it all gets set up then i would wait a few after the insurence is active and then claim on the insurence lol.

I'm not sure if Radio Shack has that and if they cover damage. I think the 14 days is if you are not satisfied with the product.
"If you are not satisfied with your purchase for any reason, and it is in its original new condition, simply call us within 14 days of the activation or process date shown on your sales receipt"
However I will talk to the store manager because I do not feel that I should have to wait for Sprint to determine if they will accept the claim because of Radio Shack's error. With a crack there is always a potential for more damage. Crack gets larger etc... We'll see what they say
If he removed your insurance without telling you, you should try demanding a new phone.

I'm going to give it a shot. I called but the store manager is not in until this evening. The person there says she does not have the authority to do anything.
same thing happened to me when i tried to activate phone when i got my s3 luckly i caught it in time was able to get my battery replaced becuase they added insurance back to my account when i got activated
demanding a new phone from the shack wont work. They wont even think about covering damage done by the consumer. Your best bet is to call asurion and sprint and hope they feel it was a misunderstanding. Did you always have insurance b4 getting the s3?
I work at radio shack..
From my experience, it was the sales mans fault for not putting it back on.
We aren't supposed to sell sprints insurance. So when he upgraded the phone he had to select premium data and didn't check the tep insurance. It usually gets removed and you have to add it back on. Then again you could've had some **** of a salesman.
Usually we're pretty good at radio shack, we help the customers out alot.
Go in there let them know the situation. It could've been an inexperienced sales guy. Bring in proof of having insurance as well from your last phone
Sent from my galaxy nexus using xda app-developers app
If not, you can get radioshqck insurance BEFORE you complain. Go the next few days and turn your phone in. The deductible is less than sprints but they have to ship the phone out so you need a backup phone. Usually takes 3-14days from my understanding
Sent from my galaxy nexus using xda app-developers app
Same thing happened to me when I got my phone from best buy. Declined their insurance because I had sprint's. Got home and checked online to make sure insurance was still there, but it had been removed. Chatted with sprint and was told they themselves removed it because instead of paying the usual $8 it had gone up to $11 because of the "suggested retail price when it launched and the rising replacement cost of high end phones, they found it necessary to increase TEP monthly charges". They put it back once I agreed to the change in price

I'm waiting for the store manager to call me back on it. Hoping she will do what's right and exchange the phone. Sprint is looking into weather or not they will honor a claim like I said but there's a chance they may not and there's also this waiting time now.
I got my G3 at Radio Shack and the salesman assured me I could get my $38 Activation fee waived given my 10+ tenure with Sprint.
It's not that he was wrong it's that he was very wrong. He was either ignorant or deceitful. Get it in writing.

pretty much the same thing happened to me.
bought it at rs
cracked the screen
sprint said the ins was removed.
they said it was a possible glitch though because of going to a higher tier ins.
all you need to do is call them and explain it.
a rep will back date the insurance to the date you purchased it.
was a pain for me but i got my replacement

Radio Shack isnt doing anything for me. I feel that they should replace it. I should not have to wait and risk further damage
We always have nothing but problems regarding insurance with customers that purchase their devices at RadioShack. Most customers do not return to RadioShack when they have a problem, they go to Sprint repair location. Then we have to explain that they don't have insurance and RadioShack duped them.
It's an all-around headache for me at least. I'm not knocking any employees here, but RadioShack's marketing on their insurance is deceitful and shady.
EASY.. Demand the manager log in to sprint terminal and add the insurance back, it can be done.

This hes pissed you messed up his rssp and post attch. That could be his job but if you get what you want no need to have him get axed
Radio Shack did not do anything for me. I talked to the store manager. She talked to her DM and they sand they will not replace the phone. I faxed her my current Sprint account info showing there is no insurance and faxed her my last bill showing I was billed and had it prior and still nothing. She is supposed to be contacting their Sprint sales rep to see if he will do anything about it. It's not a matter of getting the insurance added back on. it's a matter of getting the phone replaced and not having to pay full price for another.
which insurance do you guys recommend for my new note 2 in case it gets stolen or lost?
also i got my daughter an iphone 5(i couldn't convince her to get the s3 instead), so i need insurance for it as well in case it is lost or stolen.
Thanks
I use Sprint's TEP. It's pretty good.... Expensive than others.

best insurance I found is worth ave group.
with coupon codes its $66.20 a year for $2000 in coverage unlimited usage and $25 deductible.
Covers damage and theft but not loss then again if its lost IT IS stolen so file a police report.
sprints TEP is $11 a month in other words $132 a year AND the deductible is $200 !!! and IIRC you can only use it once a year (I could be wrong on that)
I think worth without coupon code is $75 a year or something like that. way way cheaper and better than sprints tep and it covers all your toys (I have all my phones my laptop and my camera's on it)
just sign up for the student plan.
Squaretrade
I have had no problems with squaretrade
their quick also much cheaper the Sprint TEP

Sprint total protection.
Applies gps to your phone if lost, can track from your pc and they give you a new phone if broken.
Extra 8 bucks a month.

It is $11 for the note 2...and the gps tracking is optional. If you don't set it up before hand it won't work. Not to mention most stolen phones are either imediately turned off or hard reset. (though I have talked to a few people that have found their phone this way)

your right sorry
they do not
Sprints coverage has 2 parts. One is insurance and the other is tep. The insurance is from asurion, you pay 200 and they ship you a new phone and you get it by the next business day. The tep which is total equipment protection is used whenever you have a problem with your phone that isn't covered under warranty anymore. For example if your speaker goes out they will fix it for free or if like me your screen starts messing up they will get you a whole new phone. If not for that then I would have to take the Samsung warranty and they ask that you mail it to them, wait while they fix it and then they ship it back. It can take from 2 to 3 weeks. Sprint will still check your phone but fixing it will cost 35 or more I believe. I think its 8 for insurance and 5 for tep, but I believe the insurance used to be 6. Not quite sure about any of this as it is just off the top of my head. I do know that the 11 or 13 package has 2 parts.
I have best buy insurance. $169 one time charge (you can opt for monthly) and no deductible ever.
Guaranteed 5 day turn around, they give you a loaner in the meantime.
I don't think they cover theft, perhaps if you have a police report.

best buy does not cover lost or stolen
Sent from my SPH-L900 using xda app-developers app
Best buy covers absolutely everything except lost or stolen. Unlimited claims and no deductible! They order you a new phone and give you a loaner If you need one. As far as lost or stolen, if you have their geek squad, there is a free app called locked And found that tracks where your phone is and takes pictures of what it sees with the front facing camera (a thiefs face maybe?) and reports to a website only you have access to.
For those who have the protection plan get a hold of your gsp# off your receipt because the app asks for it, or call best buy mobile.

The best buy program is junk. I had it and tried to get it fixed while traveling. First of all the replacement store would only give me a loner if I was able to return it to the same store. Now someone traveling like I was is screwed plus the loner was any phone not the same phone. The second issue was they said my phone wasn't broke enough because my problem was intermittent. They actually told me to go back to the parking and break the screen then they would replace it.

Not trying to be a argumentative but I don't think your complaints are valid.
1) I understand requiring you to return to the same store is not as convenient as possible... but creating the infrastructure to manage inter-store returns for loaner require technology investments which would surely increase the cost of insurance. Besides, most insurance programs don't even have this feature. It's inconvenient for travelers but making accomodations for such cases may not necessarily be worth the investment.
Also, loaners are temporary. To match your phone... and everyone else's, best buy must have at least one of every phone ever, for each store. (At least within the last two years). Do you expect them to open a new box everytime they dont have a matching loaner availabe?...assuming they even have them in stock?
As per your second complaint I don't know what the problem was, but bb doesn't automatically do replacements. .. instead will do repairs on fixable problems. Correct me but I believe that's what happened. They offered to do a repair but you wanted a replacement.
I think the only thing you can criticize bb for is they were asking you to commit insurance fraud.

its not even insurance. its a protection plan. similar, but not the same thing. i dont know if you can call it insurance fraud unless it is underwritten by an indemnity company.
that being said, you are correct, sir.
Sprint TEP + Kaspersky One, insurance and the ability to track, lock and wipe your phone.
You can also take pictures of the person using it.
It's win....

AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
I recently broke my galaxy note 2 front glass. Local repair shop: prob $200 because LCD ok, but even if THEY break it during repair, price becomes $350 because then need to replace entire display assembly. Then an AT&T local device service center (DSC) told me about a program rolling out in some locations called the "Dead End Pilot Out Of Warranty Replacement Program." Here in Southern California it's available at a DSC in Rancho Cucamonga, and another in (Corona? Somewhere in the Inland Empire). If you call the Rancho Cucamonga AT&T location on Archibald St they can tell you about it.
I don't know if this is California only, or specific to this franchise, although I've been told it's coming to Orange County soon. I don't know about other states/regions but the Rancho Cucamonga location in CA may know.
When I called AT&T support they didn't even know about it, but they called the location to confirm, and it's legit.
Replaced damaged Note II with a factory refurbished unit (by Samsung) for $150+tax. You keep your original battery, stylus, and back panel. The other good news: while my replacement started malfunctioning shortly after, my local DSC replaced it this time as a warranty replacement (not sure if this is technically allowed - but my local DSC was aware of the prior replacement at Rancho, and said I didn't need to go all the way back).
So - before you pay someone to fix, or even fix it yourself, you might want to see if this option is available anywhere near you - even if it's a bit of a drive.
Still unclear how this affects original warranty - have conflicting info on this one. One response is that original warranty void (what I'd expect) but that refurbished unit has automatic 90 day warranty from Samsung. Local DSC says my original warranty applies, because it's longer. Anyway, minimum 90 days refurbished warranty, even if your warranty had already expired.
Ironically, this program is even less than the insurance deductible if you have the insurance (that's $200 alone).
This is an amazing program, so here's a shout out to those responsible, and thank you - and I want others to know it's out there.
And to AT&T - if this is being trialed as a possible future company wide program: as a customer, you have gained MANY loyalty points with me for it. This would definitely encourage me to remain with AT&T for the long term.
Re: AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
I used to work at a DSC several months ago and I can confirm this program, however, its only tested in a few pilot locations at least at that time since I left. As far as the existing warranty if you opt into this program, more than likely it will still apply or 90 days, whichever is longer. However, that might be unclear as it is kind of a gray area being the reason why its only tested in pilot locations so I'd make sure to ask. Keep in mind that whatever warranty issues you have when you participate in this program, those warranty policies only apply through ATT and not through Samsung themselves.
So before anyone tries to take advantage of this program, make sure to call your nearest DSC first to see if they're participating in this program and if they have your Note 2 in stock. Don't waste your time in going if they're out of stock and the only way is to periodically call them to check. Normally, they'd perform an exchange by mail if that ever happens, but for this program, it has not been implemented.
Also remember, this program was initiated through ATT's contractor who manage these DSC locations so more than likely, the customer reps through the phone and at the corporate/authorized retailers have little to no information about this program so dont go asking them for info, especially about a warranty dispute.

Wow. Wish I had heard of this sooner. I just broke the glass on mine and got a replacement via the insurance for $200. I was happy with the next day shipping ans wasn't too difficult to submit the claim.
Kind of upsets me that I pay for the insurance every month when theres a cheaper alternative without the monthly fee.
I would have made the drive to save the difference.

Re: AT&T out of warranty replacement program (INC ACCIDENTAL DAMAGE & NO INSURANCE)
If you look it up you'll find there's only one location for at&t in Rancho Cucamonga on Archibald St (that's why I was so specific), however the number is
909-945-3427.
When you call just ask them to verify you've reached the DSC - but it would have to be; unlike some locations that have a store with DSC attached, it's a standalone DSC location.
Another poster below points out that you should call first. They are absolutely right: the program doesn't apply to all devices, and they can't do anything if they don't have a similar device in stock. In my case it had to be refurbished, I assume that's true for all (since it's not a retail location, they might not have anything else anyway.)
In short: call them first, give them specifics, and ask if it's covered in the program. They can tell you if there's stock available, if it's available under the program, what the cost is, etc. This varies by device. If it's not currently covered ask them if they expect it to be (never hurts to ask). I'm the case of the Note 2 everyone of them seemed genuinely surprised to see it so soon. I'm guessing it's because of the popularity of the device.
In my experience, they don't care how the device was damaged either - maybe don't tell them if you're running a side business rooting and reselling on eBay; but otherwise they aren't that concerned. I also found them to be very professional, customer-focused, and helpful in general.
And sorry for that long post LOL. Too easy to blather on when using Swype...

I suppose the major difference here, is your getting a refurb unit, as opposed to a new replacement unit when using insurance...
Not a huge deal I guess...
Lets hope ATT does the right thing, and quits treating smart phones and their deductibles like a house mortgage....(expensive).....as the deductible is likely more than the unit costs them to begin with...
thank you for the information OP.......g

refurb from most warranties anyway now...
In the last few years almost every electronic device I've had was replaced under warranty at least once and usually with refurbished anyway. Most warranties clearly state these days in fine print that manufacturer may replace with new or "equivalent refurbished item at manufacturer's sole discretion". Since I end up with refurb anyway, sometimes I just buy that to start, if warranty is the same...

When I was getting my replacement I talked with them a lot about how the program works. They told me in clear terms that they don't care if the phone is rooted, if a dinosaur stepped on it, or anything else. They did say you might wish to flash to factory standard so you don't leave any personal info on it, but that's all.

Nope. I don't buy insurance, because I don't think I should be paying extra for something to work as it's designed to, and product quality should be expected. When I see a company shorten its warranty then offer "insurance" I buy from someone else. It's like paying 'protection money.'
I'm afraid we'll have to blame poor product quality for that one.
