I have this situation thats hard to narrow down. Looking to see if anyone else has seen it.
This startef for me on April 6th, and continues through the update.
When visiting some web pages, the page will connect, but no data is displayed. Its obvious the page has connected. There is NO connection issue. I am connected.
Once this situation occurs, no other web page will display data. A reboot is requried.
Now, this occurs, as far as I can tell, only on certain pages, and only about 1 in 15 times. It only occurs while on WFI, and never occurs when connected only to 4g.
The pages I have had trigger this situation are:
Twitter homepage. But not in the last week.
XDA.
Has anyone else seen this? I can reproduce this everyday if I wish. It most definitely is NOT a data disconnect. But is fatal in that once it occurs, no other web page will display.
My xda page will scramble and change formating. No other page does this.
Any thoughts???
At first I figured the best I could do was test when I got home, so I wen't back to the forum list. And then it hit me! At work, using ie and no ad-block software XDA will sit and spin as certain ad site's fail to render (I just assumed it's blocked by my employer).
I don't have this problem on my phone, but then I use board-express. This never happens in Firefox or at home (where I do use ad-block software).
Could this be related? When it happens my page is all-white, and is done loading. After 5 minutes it 'pops' back to XDA.
Another question: do you experience this in mobile and desktop versions of the browser?

I would not have even thought of it as a rendering problem until I read about the Twitter page being rendered badly.
I just set the IE mobile browser to Desktop version and will be attempting to reproduce it. I cannot reproduce it on the PC at all...
It's actually a WiFi issue. I've had this problem on occasion with both my windows phones as well as my HP touchpad w/ WebOS and Android. It has something to do with certain routers holding onto a connection even when a device has dropped while in sleep mode.
I currently have a Belkin router and have had limited success in resolving it with this router. The best result I had was shortening the DHCP leasing, but still have issues on occasion.

I'm pretty sure you're right. I apparently only get the issue at home. Work...no issues. 4g no issues. I actually changed AP's yesterday at home. I had a dual band AP. Though faster, the AP was always dropping. So I put in an older Linksys and its steady. We'll see if i can dupe it with the old one.

Is anyone else having this issue yet? I have asked this on the rom development page and it seems that I may be the only one experincing this.
I have NRG's 10\28 rom loaded and I have removed many of my installed programs and I can not get the Office programs to load quickly. I have Nrg's rom 10\17 or so loaded on my wife's phone but hers doesnt seem to be doing this.
I am suspecting that it is something that I am installing that is doing this but I am not sure.
I have even downloaded the office 2010 beta today and it stil does it.
It does stop doing it for about a half a day if I reboot many times till it behaves, but then after about a half a day, it is back to taking more than 60 seconds to open word or excell, then about 20 ot 25 seconds to close it.
Any ideas??
Thank you all for looking at this.
Jeff
Takes no more than a few seconds max on my Tilt 2, I don't know man.
Same porb here, i dont think its a ROM issue as it did the same thing on most of the roms i flash. i just thought i was a WM thingi, and the worst part is it takes near 10 sec to open a NEW word doc..

Finally, someone else is also having this issue.
I have a slightly older version of the Energy rom on my wife's phone and hers is always fast to open.
I have been uninstalling programs one by one to see if one of them is affecting it.
What I have found is that as I install a couple, it will start working good, then a a few hours later, it goes to 1 min to open again.
And I am not even opening a file, just click on the excell icon, so that eliminates the bad file thing.
I will let you know what I find.
So do you have many apps installed? I have a lot, to many to mention here at this time, but if you only have a few, please list them and I will see if there are any in common between us.
Thanks,
Jeff
I had this problem on my AT&T Tilt 1 a long time ago. I was able to isolate the cause of the problem to sending/receiving Email over mobile data (wouldn't happen if the update was via wifi). Unfortunately the only thing that solved my problem was a hard reset .

interesting you mentioned wifi, i just observed today that it does not take a long time to open when i am on wifi, then i switched to no wifi, and it was taking lont time to open excel.
turned wifi back on and sure enough, excell opened quickly.
i then turnrd off my wifi network plugin, (disabled my map network drive) and now it seems to be opening excell just fine reguardless of wifi or not.
i will continue to test this ane report back.

Office Mobile looks for any files of the appropriate type (e.g., *.doc files for Word) on your device to open prior to loading. Before reading this last comment I was going to suggest removing your storage card, but if you have network drives mapped it's probably attempting to reach those while loading but timing out if they're not available.

So as long as I dont have my "enable Network Folder" clicked on the HTC's Network Plugin, it all works good. As soon as I click that, and enable the network folder, then it takes forever to open office unless I have the wifi turned on.
Man I have been fighting this for months, not sure if it was a rom thing or something that I was intalling.
I hope that others who have this issue can find this post and fix thier stuff too.
Here some searchable key words, pleae add if I am missing:
Office Microsoft Excell Word forever long time
(i hope it's all right to post defy+ threads...)
so. a spanking new defy+, stock rom (45.0.74.MB526.Retail.en.DE)
android 2.3.4, build 4.5.1-134_DFP-74
i cannot seem to connect to my older generation home router using wifi.
the router in question is a d-link DI-524, and this is the first
device that is having problems with it.
the association is succesful, i get an ip address. but a simple ping
to the gateway reveals a consistent 80%+ packet drop, reproducible
every time.
Code:
--- 10.10.10.1 ping statistics ---
256 packets transmitted, 48 received, +15 errors, 81% packet loss, time 256608ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 1.709/419.705/1257.843/447.927 ms, pipe 3
i have tried all the possible authentication modes on the router involving wpa2-psk.
although i think authentication is not the problem, i get an ip address every time
and pings go through.
my suspicion is the N mode, the router is G and older only.
i also set the router's wireless mode to forced G (as opposed to "mixed")
with the same result.
i also tried to "forget" the network a couple of times, same results.
i realize that wifi connection problems are way too common, and it's
a fragile interoperation. on monday i will try the wireless network
at work, and i wouldnt be surprised if it worked flawlessly (remains
to be seen), but this router is nothing exotic and connected to everything
i have thrown at it so far, so naturally i blame the defy+ at the moment.
3G data connection works great.
is anyone else seeing problems like this?
solved, router to blame
another lesson in internet humility, replying to myself.
i have found references to this problem on some other forums,
but the actual solution came from this very site again :]
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4383410#post4383410
the link in that post is already dead, but i could find the firmware
in question on dlink.cz's ftp archive. after upgrading the good ol' trusted
router's firmware, defy+ is willing to have a chat with it :]
the moral of the story is even stuff that works normally is to blame
once in a while.
ps. i could have sweared there was no other official update to that
firmware, i am the kind of guy who checks back regularly. i have this
hunch that that very last firmware appeared silently, without much
fanfare, and thus flew under my radar. almost impossible to find
it even by directly googling for it...
Well, thanks for sharing this problem and solution. We learned something. You have awful pretty sense of humor.
As the title says, I didn't change anything about the phone's configuration when I was out, didn't download any new apps or change any settings that would interfere like this. No one else has changed my home network in my absence.
Nevertheless, most of my apps, such as Instagram, the Play Store, Twitter, Wikipedia, Chrome; almost all their requests time out. There seem to be short windows where data will load, and Instagram appears to load comments and post metadata, but no images. It's basically unusable. Occasionally an exclamation mark will pop up over my Wifi symbol in the notification center. Strangely, I can still reach my Steam and Battle.net authenticators, but the moment I try loading the Steam app, nothing comes up. It's like the device can only handle plaintext over Wifi.
All of the apps work fine over cellular data.
Also, there is a toast that appears whenever I restart my phone that says "Power On" that I've never noticed before. I was rooted using Xposed, the only modules I used were Snapprefs, Xinsta, Physical Button Music Control, and Greenify Experimental Features, all of which I uninstalled. The toast still appears with the latter two disabled. Only other rooted apps I had besides Xposed were Nova Launcher, Greenify, Busybox, and Root Checker Basic, all of which have been removed but Nova.
I am running 6.0.1 with the latest update.
Any ideas? I am still within 15 day warranty so I could theoretically return the phone (which I was contemplating doing anyhow since 10gb of functional storage is a bit too small for me), but would rather not have my hand forced, and eat into my cell data plan.
So far I have tried forgetting the network, wiping cache/dalvik with TWRP, removing the Google VPN, resetting all network settings, and a couple things I can't remember offhand now. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

First, if you want to return your device because the 16gb model doesn't have enough space, go ahead.
If it is mostly because of this WiFi issue, I wouldn't return the device, it is almost certainly the case this is some configuration issue (possibly in concert with some Android bug) which can be resolved.
Is it possible when you came home the device connected to a neighbor's AP and thus you couldn't use data, but it wasn't immediately obvious, so you ended up forgetting your own network and reentering the config, but the key was off by a little, and from that point on, it was just assumed the wifi config was correct?
When you say Google VPN, are you using WiFi Assistant and Project Fi? Have you tried disabling auto-connect fir the WiFi Assistant?
Have you tried using the old Lollipop DHCP client (perhaps your IP address got used by another device and the new Android client doesn't handle that well?) Just grasping at straws.
Have you tried turning on Bluetooth while WiFi is on? Perhaps there is a bug with them working independently of each other in certain situations.

I am 100% positive I am on my own home network and that I used the correct key. I'm not sure what you mean with regards to the rest of the 'config', I have always used the standard wifi configuration, just typed in my key and had it work.

I actually forget what it was called, it was under Settings>Wireless&Networks>More>VPN. There was one entry there with an icon. I forget the name of it, but the icon looked like a stock Google icon and I think it had google in the name. I am on Project Fi, not using any wifi assistant (at least not in Advanced Wi-Fi Settings), but when I tried to toggle that option on just now, something called "VpnDialogs" crashed, so I assume that VPN entry was that. But again, the assistant wasn't on.

I don't use Bluetooth, and trying to toggle it off/on from the control center just gives me a repeated "unfortunately, Bluetooth Share has stopped" error message.
I have decided to get the 32GB 5X since I do want more storage, but since I would like to be able to root my phone again and use Xposed, I would still like to hear any other ideas you have for troubleshooting this problem in case it reoccurs.
I reflashed the latest update to see if that would fix it, no dice. When I send the 16GB model back I have to factory reset it anyway, so I suppose I'll know if that does it.
What puzzles me is why I can load text from instagram posts that have been posted while I've been having this problem, but not images. Makes me think that maybe my connection is being super throttled somehow rather than non-functional, but my PC's speeds are normal. Perhaps some internal part is damaged? I do have a case and it hasn't taken any serious tumbles, but it has had one or two small falls from maybe 2 feet high.

It is easy to test if you have some network connection vs none.
In terminal or adb shell
ifconfig wlan0
ping www.google.com
1st command will tell you (among other things) if your wlan picked up an IP address.
2nd command will test whether you can send ping packets over your connection.
I'm sure there are millions of ways of doing the above, I just gave you one example.
Strangely, the solution seems to have come from factory resetting my router. I ruled this out initially because my other old phones were working fine on wifi, my phone is now getting WiFi again.
Now to figure out what the hell this "Power On" toast is about...

I've encountered something similar where the router runs out of NVRAM space because it has recorded too many DHCP clients, it won't hand out new IP addresses, but if you are existing or already have one, it is fine.
For months now i've had problems using xda. The loading would hang and wait. If I looked at the developer tools in chrome, I can clearly see that for some reason it was constantly pending loading at objects attached to hosts like this:
www1-lw.xda-cdn.com
www2-lw.xda-cdn.com
forum.xda-cdn.com
forum-lw-1.xda-cdn.com
forum-lw-2.xda-cdn.com
It was failing to load with Chrome on Android, Linux, and Windows. Firefox would load correctly. Interesting thing is that when I connect via a VPN and then test with Chrome it would load fine. I would say it is just my IP address and routing but this has been over a period of time when my ISP IP address has changed. I've verified that and it is still an issue. I have no other issues with any other site.
If there are details I can provide, let me know. If this is the wrong forum for a problem like this, let me know that too. I've gotten to the point that I block the listed cdn addresses in my hostfile so that they immediately fail and my pages load but obviously that rids me of images and other elements along with not letting you guys recoup cost for ADs.
There seems to be something with the CDNs XDA uses.

Connection is fine. Its a 100M UP/DOWN connection. No adblocking. Zero issues for anything else. I stream a lot of data from various sources. Im a very heavy user and never have any issues with any site but XDA. The fact that it works over the VPN is interesting since it would route it through a different path. The fact that it loads fine without the VPN connection in firefox only is also interesting. As I said, this has been going on for a long time. I'm quote sure it isn't my 'connection'. Of course it could be routing or a problem with the CDNs.
All other page elements load correctly except for all the CDN URLs according to the developer tools in Chrome. The problem is the page won't actually 'render' anything until the CDNs timeout.

i know ill probably get a talking to, but try an ad blocker. xda is chalk full of ads, very very many! that could have an affect. btw, i use adfree http://adfree.odiousapps.com/adfree.apk
It goes further. Even with an adblocker, the page doesn't load properly. Some of those CDNs load real elements. So even with ads being blocked, page would still not load.

My chrome will load slow/hang if i visit xda(open many tabs) with whitelisted adblock(ublock). When hang I can see under taskmanager the page consuming 1gig+ ram. Sites like gsmarena is fine whitelisted, no performance issues so maybe you can see what they're doing right.

I have the same issue. The issue is not present in Firefox. Difference ? MAYBE due to the limit of open connections pr host in google is lower than in Firefox.

The issue is also present on Firefox and is rather network related. I often have issues loading xda at home and it stucks at opening www1-lw.xda-cdn.com, but at work it works fine almost ach time. This is happening for at least half a year now and there are days (not often tho) where everything loads instantly.

Same issue, waiting for www1-lw.xda-cdn.com on XDA frontpage, been like this for around a year now. uBlock is disabled. To remedy this, I have to load the XDA Forums in another tab, refresh XDA Frontpage and it's all working good
Same here. I would logon to the site way more often if this dind't happen.
Same here, @theBIGone, I see you're in Amsterdam as well, maybe it's location based as well?
Netherlands here too. Exact same issue.
I was having terrible lockups whilst browsing XDA for ages, to the point that I thought xda was running one of these CoinMining scripts on users. I actually enabled adblockers and the issue totally vanished. Weird.
I have used my phone to connect to Free Wifi in fast food shop, which requires me to click a button for Terms and Conditions.
In the past, the login page or notification will pop up automatically.
However, in recent days, even if the Wifi is connected automatically, neither login page nor notification pops up.
I try to connect that page through Chrome, by searching random words or type http://1.1.1.1
It did succeed once, unfortunately it doesn't work later.
Does anyone know how to solve this issue?

This isn't a solution, but I used to have that problem with McD's free WiFi a few years ago and my workaround was to bookmark the free WiFi terms and conditions page.
I think I also used to try to "forget" the WiFi network in Settings and then try to connect to an Internet page to force up the Terms page..
Forgive if this is useless info because I haven't seen that problem in at least a couple of years or more. and am relying on memory.

Just thinking whether there can be a proper fix
It's been a long time, but I seem to recall back when I was using public Wi-Fi (such as McDonald's) more often and if I had this problem (on some older phone), I could access the proper page manually by going to the list of Wi-Fi (long-press on the Wi-Fi Quick Setting Tile) and then maybe long-pressing on the particular Wi-Fi I want the page open for? Or possibly just click on the button to go into the details for that Wi-Fi and I think there's something there for getting to the access page.
Sorry that I can't be more specific - it's been years.
